This week: How to save 29,000 lives

Figures released by the World Health Organisation in January 2012 show that Africa is the most dangerous place in the world to get pregnant. And ending a pregnancy is highly dangerous too. In Africa, 29,000 women die every year as a result of unsafe abortions.

This is a public health emergency and the issue of unsafe abortions was high on the agenda at the World Conference on Family Planning, held last year in the Seneglese capital Dakar.

During that conference, we spoke with three medical doctors who have had first-hand experience with the consequences of unsafe abortions and are determined to improve reproductive health for women.

According to the Ionospheric Prediction Service, Sydney, solar activity on Jan 26 dropped to 126 (10.7 cm flux) and 79 (SSN). Predictions for Jan 28 are 120/72.

There is continuing excellent propagation into Melbourne in the 7 MHz band during our post sunrise period, with signal paths from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle dominant.

This band has become heavily congested during the window 1930 to 2000 UTC, and this is a summary of key occupancies observed in that time on January 26, 2012.

Monitoring India on shortwave radio

3945, AIR Gorakhpur, 1625-1628, Jan 15, talks, SINPO 15321. (Mille)

4747.6, Radio Kashmir, Leh, -1631*, Jan 10 and 11. Even after many weeks, still continues on this odd frequency instead of 4760. I could not get the proper audio at my location. (Jacob). On Jan 10, at 1330-1450, the stronger than usual open carrier, but as normal unable to confirm any audio due to adjacent QRM from Bangladesh Betar and CNR1 mixing together on 4750. It is of some comfort to learn that even at your location in India, you do not have the best of audio from them. (Howard). It was not heard on 4747.6 Jan 17 evening or Jan 18 morning. However some suspected carrier was noted by Victor Goonetilleke and myself drifting up and down near 4720 around 1615 to past 1630, Jan 17. I have spoken to the Station Engineer at Radio Kashmir, Leh Jan, 18 and informed him of 4760 frequency variation problem. He told me, that his SW transmitter is having problems and they are attending to it. E-mail is not working well there. He also informed, that it is heavily snowing there now with maximum temperature Minus 16 degrees Centigrade! (Jacob)

4775, AIR Imphal. Regarding my logging at 0000-0040, Dec 24, in DX-Window no. 444. (Petersen). It is test that you heard. That station is heard often testing on SW around 0000 just before normal transmission starts. Many AIR stations are also similarily noted testing like that on MW before start of normal transmissions in the morning. Some of them are tests of standby transmitter. On SW I have observed only 4775 like that. (Jacob)

English news concluding with report of the Australian Open in tennis, 0040 into Malayalam with mix of talk and music, 0055 some type of promotional ann with fanfares, 0056 possibly news headlines, but fading badly now. Occasional QRM from possibly fisherman speaking in Spanish. Poor. Jan 20. Next evening, Jan 21, I was listening for their 0020 sign on and English news at 0035. Although a carrier was detectable at 0035, it was not until 0045 that the signal rose out of the noise. Malayalam vocals until 0057 when a man spoke. Very poor. (Sellers). 4918.98, Radio Quito, "me too" on this one. Bumped into big signal at 1033. Program of male/female in Spanish but mainly indigenous language (probably Quechua), reading items punctuated with bursts of musica ecuatoriana. Program ran to 1054 when nice ID, then orchestral version of HC national anthem (long form, with prelude, chorus, vocal middle section and grand wrap-up). Again, ID for Radio Quito afterward and then at 1100, into news show which sounded like "Noticiero Ecuadoradio" (?) presented by female in Spanish. After 1100, signal was much improved music. A few times heard some RTTY mixing with RQ, on same channel -- almost seemed same trnasmitter as Radio Quito. I wonder if they are sharing a utility transmitter for SW and using one of the sidebands for broadcast? (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre DX)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 16 - 22 January 2012

Solar activity reached moderate levels as Regions 1401 (N18, L=213, class/area Eki/540 on 19 January) and 1402 (N28, L=214, class/area Eko/630 on 17 January) both produced M-class events. Region 1401 produced an M1/1n on 17/0453Z and an M1/1n on 18/1912Z. Region 1402 followed with an M3/2n on 19/1605Z. The 19 January event was associated with and Type IV radio emission and a full halo CME. Type II emissions were detected on 19/1252Z and 19/1933Z with speeds of 933 km/s and 694 km/s respectively. Partial halo CMEs were also observed on 16 and 18 January. Activity decreased to very low levels late on 19 January. Isolated low-level C-class flares were observed on 20 - 22 January. Plage Region 1396 (N27, L=287, class/area Dao/110 on 17 January) produced a C1 flare at 20/2112Z associated with a Type II radio sweep (945 km/s) and a non-Earth-directed CME. Region 1402 produced a long-duration C1 flare at 20/2333Z associated with a weak Type IV radio sweep.

An enhancement of the greater than 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit began around 20/0800Z and continued through the end of the period.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels the entire period.

Geomagnetic field conditions ranged from quiet to unsettled levels, with a brief excursion into active-major storm levels at high latitudes on 22 January. Field conditions were predominately quiet from 17-21 January. On 22 January, an interplanetary shock passed the ACE spacecraft at approximately 22/0514Z, likely indicating the arrival of the full-halo CME observed on 19 January in LASCO imagery. This was followed by a geomagnetic sudden impulse (SI) at 22/0614Z (31 nT observed by the boulder magnetometer). Field activity increased to unsettled to major storm levels at high latitudes following the SI.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 25 January - 20 February 2012

Solar activity is expected to be low with M-class flares likely until Regions 1401 and 1402 depart on 28 January. Predominantly quiet levels are expected for the remained of the period.

Protons greater than than 10 MeV are expected to remain above event threshold from 25 - 26 January. A return to background levels is expected for the remainer of the period.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels the entire period.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at active to minor storm levels on 25 January as effects from the CME from 23 January wane. Quiet levels are expected on 26 January. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 27 January as a coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) becomes geoeffecitve. A return to quiet levels is expected until 02 - 03 February, with quiet to unsettled levels expected as another CH HSS becomes geoeffective. Predominantly quiet levels are expected from 04-08 February. Another CH HSS is expected to become geoeffective with quiet to unsettled levels expected from 09-10 February. Predominantly quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the period.

Blues Radio International - a Hit on shortwave !

Jesse A. Finkelstein, host and producer of Blues Radio International, sends word, "that for a limited time, but at least through the month of March we will be mailing a free blues CD to anyone sending us a reception report for Blues Radio International (Monday 0200 UTC on 9955 kHz. Each new Monday show replays Thursday 0200 UTC). Might be of interest to listeners looking for more than just a QSL.

Blues Radio International brings Blues Music to a potential audience of tens of millions through Radio Miami International, a privately owned international broadcast station in Miami, Florida.

Clear mentions of Bolivia, and then, at 1016 "...las seis de la manana y 16 minutos con la musica de la madrugada en San Miguel . . .". Into nondescript vocals. 6134.823, Radio Santa Cruz, 0030-0100. Station is now a tough catch. Voice of Russia is on 6135 with a very strong signal, while RSC is half as strong being drown out by VOR. Ecuador
4814.98, Radio El Buen Pastor. Head at 1106 with Ecuadorian pasillos featuring guitars and piano. Usual high-voiced male announcer with timecheck at 1108, then back into pleasant program of folklorico music. Fair signal with usual blipping utility interference. One of the only places on the band to hear wonderful Ecuadorian folkloric music, the other being HCJB - Pichincha on 6050 kHz. Speaking of that, what is the source of the unid signal hetting HCJB at approx 6050.84, many mornings? Can never raise audio from it but certainly tantalizing. (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre DX)

5038.18, Radio Libertad de Junin. Came here from Tarma at 1035 and found fairly good signal, certainly best Andean signal on the band. Morning folklorico program, nice huaynos with yipping singers backed by guitars. At 1040 reverb taped ads followed by very nice, live ID by announcer "...en la ciudad de Junin, amables oyentes, ustedes escuchando a Radio Libertad . . . esperando le gusta . . . la musica nacional . . Radio Bulgaria slated to leave shortwave January 31

Dear listeners and friends of the short waves and Radio Bulgaria, With a huge regret to inform you very bad news. After more than 75 years in the world broadcasting from January 31, 2012 at 2200UT Radio Bulgaria cease broadcasting on short and medium waves. The solution is that Radio Bulgaria is not necessary now its short waves and medium waves listeners. The reason -no money for broadcast on short and medium waves. And who listens to short waves today? Already has internet. Maintaining the short waves was "Mission Impossible"! Hope dies last. As a frequency manager in the last 19 years my main task was to provide best quality signal of Radio Bulgaria in worldwide coverage. There will be no short waves, there will be no frequency manager.
For all people who work in Radio Bulgaria that bad news is shock and horror Beginning of the end. But expect your moral support.

Good daytime propagation continues from Asia into Melbourne on 11 MHz in the
afternoon window 0400 to 0500.

This band is dominated by many transmissions from China, including some
regional services, which is one of my areas of specialized frequency
research.

Solar activity has fallen (again) and the 10.7 cm solar flux is now 135, and
the daily SSN is 89.

This is a brief summary of key occupancies observed on January 10, 2012,
from one of favourite field monitoring ites in the Warrandyte State Park, 1
km east of central Melbourne, using the E5 receiver and two metres of
antenna,
between 0400 and 0500.

Cubans Respond with Enthusiasm to Marti Listener Contest

Miami, Fl., Jan. 12, 2012 – More than 2,600 Cubans contacted Radio Martí for a chance to win one of six mopeds in a listener contest sponsored by the station.

The contest, which ran from Dec. 19 to Jan. 5, raffled off six mopeds donated by Cuban-Americans and provided important insight into the Cuban audience’s use of shortwave and AM radio as well as social media. Martí asked Cubans to call, e-mail, Twitter or subscribe to Facebook for a chance to win.

“The positive audience feedback for this moped raffle and our new forward-leaning programming reinforces our program choices,” said Carlos García Pérez, Director of Radio and TV Martí. “It is compelling to hear from Cubans about attitudinal changes on the island, incremental changes underway, and how closely connected they continue to feel to the U.S. and Cuban-American community in particular.”

The listener contest is part of a year-long effort by Radio and TV Martí to reshape programming to better match the interests of young Cubans who face economic hardships as well as ongoing political restrictions. Through numerous focus groups with Cubans who have recently arrived in the U.S., as well as daily call-in programs and contests like these, Cubans consistently express their interests in technology, economic opportunities, entertainment and connecting with Americans.

The Martís have responded with a series of program initiatives to make programming relevant to the day-to-day lives of young people on the island. Shows like Avanza Cuba (Cuba Forward), look at the incremental changes underway in Cuba and future opportunities in technology and business; while El Revotillo (The Scramble) provides an on-air market for trading goods and services; and other news and entertainment programs foster enhanced audience participations through mobile, online and social media tools.

The Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which is funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors, was established in 1990 to oversee the operations of Radio and TV Martí, which broadcast news and information to the people of Cuba.

The contract was awarded to Babcock following a rigorous competitive process. It is designed to ensure that the BBC receives the optimum value for money that continues to deliver high levels of service for its audience. The contract start date is 1 April 2012; it is worth circa £200 million over 10 years.

HF propagation into Melbourne continues to be very good in our early to mid-afternoons, on 11 MHz and 13 MHz, with all continents represented.

According to the IPS in Sydney, solar activity is still classified as "low", with the 10.7 cm solar flux hovering around 135, and the daily SSN around 94.

This means that long-haul multi-hop, multi-modal propagation on darkness or semi-darkness path on frequencies over about 15 MHz will continue to be unreliable, but daylight long-haul circuits will be satisfactory.

Malaysia
In recent weeks, there has been no sign of any activity, as observed from Melbourne, for the Voice of Malaysia English or Malay services on 15295, 9750 and 6175 in its scheduled period 0400-1000. It could be assumed that these services have been discontinued. The Indonesian (1200-1400 9750 6175) and Chinese (1000-1200 11885 6175 and 15295) services have not yet been confirmed. The domestic networks continue as before, and are observed on 11665 (War FM) 9835 (Sarawak studio Malay) 5965 (Domestic Malay) and 7295 (Domestic English)

DAYTIME ASIAN SPECIALIZED MODE

The December/January midday specialized Asian mode from Asia, historically appearing on 5, 6, 7, and 9 MHz in the late morning and noon periods here in Melbourne, have failed to materialize this summer. This Mode was supported by specialized propagation via reflection off the top of Sporadic-E clouds above Northern Australia with no intermediate ground reflection, with path length up to 11,000 km in broad daylight.

This phenomenon was "discovered" by some of us way back in the 1950s, and its study had long been a target for serious propagation research every summer here in Victoria, particularly during years of low sunspot activity.

There's still three weeks remaining for this "window", and perhaps it may yet appear?!

6059.96, Super Radio Deus e Amor, Curitiba, 2300. Male announcer's clear ID for "Super Radio Deus e Amor" and then into program of Portuguese love songs featuring lady with orchestra. Big booming signal, easy listening. None of the SRDE // frequencies noted coming through at this time. (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre)

5990, Radio Senado. Terrific reception this week, very early, noted several mornings blowing in with a big signal on nice clear frequency. At 0755 with Portuguese pop song, followed by taped ID extravaganza at 0801, with chimes. Male announcer in echo, mentions of frequencies and ondas curtas, "Bom Dia!" and another ID as "Radio Senado, a música regional de . . ." Then into a program of ranchera-like musical selections. Also pinning the S-meter needle at 0959 on 12/30. (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre)

4865.03, Radio Verdes Florestas, Cruz do Sul. Signal holding up quite late most mornings, from approx 1000 sign-on to nearly 1100, and at times, surprisingly, the best Latin in the 60 meter band here. Heard wiht segued ballads, no announcements at all until 1055 when into an ID sequence -- live male announcer with clear "Radio Verdes Florestas!" ID and then female with canned ID and frequency run-down. Propagation on this one behaves much more like a Peruvian than a Brazilian, thanks to far western Brazil location. Holds up long after other Brazilians like 4885 have faded away. (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre)

6164.96, RNT, 2225-2256, French talk. Local Afro-pop music and French pop ballads. Fair to good but with some adjacent channel splatter. Still running past their normal 2230 sign off time. (Brian Alexander, PA)

4800.00, China National Radio 1, 1130-1145. Noted different individuals in Chinese with comments during the period. Search for parallel broadcast and could hear a threshold signal on 9630 KHz only. The broadcast on 4800 was at a fair level during the entire period. (Chuck Bolland, FL)

4940.073, Voice of Strait, 1055-1110. Prior to the hour, noted a female in Chinese with comments. On the hour heard time tones - 4 short one long, followed with male's Chnese comments and possibly news. Music to 1107, signal never really good enough to listen for pleasure. (CHuck Bolland, FL)

Clandestine
1450-1600* Denge Mezopotamya via Ukraine. Indigenous vocals. Kurdish instrumental music. Talk in listed Kurdish. 5 time pips at 1600 followed by a short announcement
and off. Poor. Weak but readable. Still running past their normal 1500 sign off time. Also tentatively heard on 7540 at 1601 sign on with a threshold signal. (Brian Alexander-PA)

Laos
6130 RN Lao, Vientiane. Highlight of the month has been the reemergence of this one, loggable on many mornings. Was best in early Dec, after Chuck Rippel tip, but still hearing this week tho not as well as earlier in Dec (12 / 3,4,5,6). Propagation window for here opens up around 1245 and holds thru 1300+, tho was hearing as early as 1230 in early Dec. Best signal was on 12/4 with very enjoyable pgm of Laotian pop music -- very familiar to me after my years of working in Laos. Very enjoyable programming! Usually tones on the hour, but one time noted playing straight thru on a local Sun night in Laos. (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre)

6009.96, Radio Mil, Mexico City. To answer question recently posed on a DXer user group, yes, XEOY is still here. Noted at 1022 with SS pop vocals. Good signal after phasing away the co-channel crud. Lite het was un-notchable. Segued songs to 1028 ID by OM, "En Radio Mil, muy buenos dias y cordiales saludos, amables oyentes . . . Mexico . . ." (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre)

9704.99, LV du Sahel, 2230-2300*, French talk. Euro-pop and Afro-pop music. Local chants at 2255. Closing announcements at 2258 followed by flute interval signal. Choral national anthem at 2258:35. 5039.38, Radio Libertad de Junin. Noted many mornings this month with poor-fair signal, often opening day's xmsn around *1000. Noted with taped organ and echo-voiced ID announcement at 1001 and then live announcer from 1004. Interestingly, this one seems to have become the most reliable Peruvian in the 60 meter band for me this winter, taking the crown from nominal 4790 Radio Vision de Chiclayo, which has been missing in action. Am hearing Junin more frequently even than Radio Tarma on nominal 4775. Unfortunately, it's a matter of this one being the best of a bad lot, as other Peruvians are just not coming thru very well this month (Ralph Perry, IL/Cumbre)

ELWA Liberia to resume broadcast in 2013

After surviving a court case against it and conceding to an arson attack on its broadcast facilities, donations have started pouring in to ELWA Ministries in Liberia to change the topography of the 137 acres of land it occupies.

Rev Kedrick L White, Executive Director ELWA Ministries, on Thursday 28 December, 2011 began a very brief press statement about the master plan. “As you may recall, on 8 November 2011, the ELWA radio building was burned to the ground. It was a major lost to our radio ministry; except for about 30% of our recordings everything was total lost - radio equipment, furniture and the building structure. We estimate a loss of US$250,000 and a replacement cost of about US$400,000.”

Rev White explained that many supporters in and out of the country have expressed a willingness to help ELWA rebuild its broken-down infrastructure. He said the construction of the new studio building begins in early 2012 and that the entire broadcast facility will be fully operational by next year.

According to the ELWA Ministries Director other construction related developments include a new high school, an amphitheatre, a guest house, the refurbishing of the ELWA housing stock and a new hospital. Money for the construction of the hospital to the tune of US$3.5 million is made available by the Charity Group Samaritan Purse in fulfillment of earlier promise made by its founder and president the world Evangelist Franklin Graham, son of the legendary world evangelist Billy Graham when he visited Liberia in March 2011.

ELWA Ministries had a tough time last year when its legitimate ownership of the 137 acres of land it occupies was challenged by the Government of Liberia in court. The government, after acrimonious confrontation with ELWA Ministries, took the matter to court in an attempt to retrieve the land which it considered as its property. But facts surrounding the land revealed that the said property was duly given to ELWA as an eleemosynary grant, by an act of the national legislature, a tribal certificate and a well probated deed by the late President Tubman Administration.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 December - 01 January 2012

Solar activity was at low to moderate levels. Activity was moderate on 26 December due to M-class flares from Region 1387 (S21, L = 227, class/area Dki/290 on 27 December), the largest being a M2/Sf event
at 26/2030 UTC. Activity decreased to low levels during 27 - 28 December with most of the frequent C-class flares from Regions 1387 and 1389 (S23, L = 087, class/area Ekc/500 on 30 December). Activity returned to moderate levels during 29 - 31 December due to M-class flares from Region 1389. Activity decreased to low levels on 01 January with most of the flare activity from Region 1389.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit during the period. However, a greater than 10 MeV proton flux enhancement occurred during 25 - 26 December (peak flux 3 pfu at 26/0135 UTC) associated with a M4/1n flare at 25/1816 UTC from Region 1387.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels.

The geomagnetic field was at quiet levels during 26 - 28 December. Activity increased to quiet to unsettled levels on 29 December due to weak CME passages associated with filament eruptions observed on 25 and 26 December. Field activity decreased to mostly quiet levels during 31 December - 01 January.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 January - 30 January 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a slight chance for isolated M-class activity.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels during 04 - 07 January. Normal flux levels are expected during 08 - 30 January.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels during 04 - 06 January due to recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream effects. Predominantly quiet conditions are expected during 07 - 30 January.

Audio from W1AW's CW code practices and CW/digital bulletins is available using EchoLink via the W1AW Conference Server named "W1AWBDCT." The 9:45 PM ET phone bulletin is currently unavailable via W1AWBDCT. The audio is sent in real-time and runs concurrently with W1AW's regular transmission schedule.

All users who connect to the conference server are muted. Please note that any questions or comments about this server should not be sent via the "Text" window in EchoLink. Please direct any questions or comments to w1aw@arrl.org.

In a communications emergency, monitor W1AW for special bulletins as follows: Voice on the hour, Digital at 15 minutes past the hour, and CW on the half hour.

Radio Bar-Kulan announces leaving shortwave

Clandestine, Radio Bar-Kulan has announced the station has left shortwave transmissions effective from January 1, 2012, per RBK this follows a continuing reduction of audience and the need to expand their FM network within Somalia. Outside of the country RBK is still available on Thaicom 5 satellite and web streaming on the RBK website.

Radio EDXP and special anniversary QSLs

To commemorate the 16th birthday of the Electronic DX Press Radio Monitoring Association (EDXP) on January 4, 2012, special QSLs are now being issued for all correct reception reports received up to the end of 2012 for the "Radio EDXP" programs hosted by various international shortwave broadcasters, titled "The Australian DX Report".

The full colour QSLs show Australian scenes and wildlife, and indicate the actual transmitter location and the name of the host broadcaster.

The Australian DX Report Radio is the EDXP's long-time broadcasting service, offering news, reports and schedule updates about international broadcasting, propagation, and monitoring.

Host broadcasters include:

Worldwide Christian Radio (WWCR) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Every week, on Sundays, at 0300-0315 and on Mondays at 1245-1300

World Harvest Radio International (WHRI) Indiana, monthly during the "DXing with Cumbre" English program

Adventist World Radio worldwide network, every month, during the "Wavescan" program, on weekends. This may be heard over transmitters in Guam, Germany, and WRMI (Miami).

About the Author:

Pur Radio 1 on extended shortwave schedule

Pur Radio 1, based in Eupen, Belgium, is broadcasting an expanded schedule on shortwave since 18 December, and is now heard with programmes in German and Dutch on 6085 kHz at 0700-1200 UTC. Good reception reported today in Almere, the Netherlands by Ehard Goddijn. Pur Radio 1 rents airtime from German broadcaster Radio 700. The transmitter is located at Kall-Krekel in Germany. RADIO FREE ASIA ISSUES YEAR OF THE DRAGON QSL CARD JANUARY 2012

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces the release of our 43nd QSL card. This QSL commemorates 2012 as the Year of the Dragon. According to ChineseZodiac.Com, Dragons are characterized as ambitious, risk takers, and as people who gravitate toward challenges. If left on their own and allowed to live by their own rules, Dragons are usually successful. Dragons are also passionate in everything they do and while they frequently help others, Dragons will rarely ask for help. The Year of the Dragon is from January 23, 2012 – February 9, 2013. This QSL card will be used to confirm all valid RFA reception reports for January-February 2012.

RFA’s 43rd QSL card commemorates 2012as the Year of the Dragon.

RFA is a private, nonprofit corporation that broadcasts news and information to listeners in Asian countries where full, accurate, and timely news reports are unavailable. Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA currently broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin, the Wu dialect, Vietnamese, Tibetan (Uke, Amdo, and Kham), and Uyghur. BBC Radio 6 returns to vinyl records for one day

Vinyl set to make radio comeback for one day only

BBC Radio 6 Music has announced it will be playing only vinyl on New Year's Day.

Most BBC stations phased out vinyl in favour of CDs in the 1990s and the majority now use digital versions of songs.

Presenters Jarvis Cocker and Guy Garvey will be among those dusting off their turntables and Don Letts will be bringing his own seven-inch singles.

VOA Marks 70th Year of US Broadcast to China

Washington, D.C. — December 27, 2011 —

The Voice of America is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the first U.S. radio broadcasts to China, which began the 28th of December 1941, just weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the start of World War Two.

Voice of America was still months away from being officially established when the first Chinese language shortwave broadcasts were transmitted from studios in San Francisco. U.S. government broadcasting operations to China were eventually moved to New York and then Washington under the Voice of America.

VOA Director David Ensor hailed the distinguished line of journalists who have worked at the service and transformed it into a modern multi-media platform. “Because of the professionalism and creativity of our journalists, the Voice of America is a trusted source of news to the people of China and the world,” Ensor said. “As we move forward, we plan to make VOA programming even more vibrant and dynamic.”

Earlier this month, U.S. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) hosted a reception to honor VOA’s China Branch journalists. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued a statement congratulating Voice of America for “70 years of outstanding broadcasts to China.”

VOA programs in Mandarin, Cantonese and Tibetan are delivered on radio, television, the Internet, mobile platforms, satellite, and by proxy servers designed to circumvent Chinese Internet blocking. VOA English language teaching programs, including the social media sensation, OMG! Meiyu, enjoy a large audience in China.

These national sound treasures include speeches of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah‚ Quaid-e-Milat Liaqat Ali Khan‚ Mother-e-Milat Fatimah Jinnah‚ Quaid-e-Awam Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Shaheed ‚ Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and other national leaders.

Our archives also have speeches of foreign heads of friendly nations that frequented Pakistan in the passage of last six decades. "The Dutch government has cut our budget by 70 percent from 1 January 2013. If we were to continue to use shortwave at the level we do now, due to the high cost we wouldn't have enough money left to produce any meaningful content :-( The exact situation after 1 Jan 2013 has still not been finalised. We will definitely close or sell our relay stations in Bonaire and Madagascar, as there will be no budget to pay staff to work there. We *may* retain a limited number of shortwave broadcasts, but this hasn't yet been decided. As soon as we know definitely, we will inform our listeners and Web users."

Update on Bhutan monitoring

Here's an update from BBS ...

We are still broadcasting our regular program on 50 kW transmitter with 50 kW output power. The schedule is from 0000 to 1400 GMT. Regarding 100 kW transmitter, there is a software glitch giving problems and frequent shut down. Right now 5030 is on trial, once finalised we will look for good and clean frequency for the second channel.

5030.0, BBS, 1248 to tune out at 1355, Dec 22. Testing their transmitter, mostly with reduced modulation (hum) and sporadically testing with full modulation. Some indigenous music, usual phone conversations with young girls singing songs. At 1341, when they played some indigenous music, found them clearly parallel on 6035.05. Yesterday Jim Young (Calif.) and some Japanese DXers could hear the parallel, but I was unable to make it out until today; some morse code interference. December 20, 2011 — The Ontario DX Association (ODXA) has been appointed QSL Manager for radio stations CKMX Classic Country AM 1060 (1060 kHz) and CFVP Shortwave (6030 kHz), owned and operated by Astral Media, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Following on from over 20 years of serving as the QSL Manager for Astral Media’s Toronto CFRB (1010 kHz) and CFRX (6070 kHz), the ODXA is pleased to expand this volunteer service to DXers worldwide.

Serving as the QSL Manager will be Harold Sellers. Living in Vernon, British Columbia, Mr. Sellers has regular reception of both the mediumwave and shortwave signals from Calgary, providing familiarity with the programming content.

QSL cards have been printed and will be sent in response to accurate reports for either 1060 or 6030 kHz.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 12 - 18 December 2011

Solar activity was at very low to low levels. Region 1367 (S19, L=076, class/area Cso/030 on 08 December) was the most active region and produced occasional to frequent C-class flares near and beyond the west limb during 13-15 December. Region 1376 (N20, L=306, class/area Dro/020 on 18 December) was also responsible for producing multiple C-class flares during 17-18 December. There were no Earth-directed coronal mass ejections observed during the period.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet levels during most of the period, with isolated periods of unsettled levels observed at high latitudes.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 December - 16 January 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels during the period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels during the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels during 21-27 December. Activity is expected to increase to quiet to unsettled levels during 28-29 December and 5-6 January due to recurrent coronal hole high-speed streams. Quiet levels will prevail 30 December - 4 January and 7-16 January.

Time Take to Enjoy Christmas Around the World

All of us have been in the midst of the holiday crunch for weeks. Endless errands and holiday festivities abound, and you may feel as though during these last few days you're running in circles! If so ... take a break, whatever you can spare, for some receiver time for band scanning and special holiday radio programs.

There are endless hours of specials from across the globe leading up to Christmas. In Central and South America, the Posadas religious commemoration continues. During the ensuing evenings many Spanish stations air extended programming - some may broadcast all night, while a few networks have been known to activate relays for the holiday season. Check during late afternoon for African stations that may also extend their broadcast hours.

On Christmas Eve the BBC World Service revives an annual tradition live from the Chapel of King‛s College, Cambridge. On Christmas Day, special programming continues from Radio Canada International and BBC World Service airs the Queen‛s Christmas Message.

Others to tune in include Germany‛s Deutsche Welle, Radio Netherlands, Vatican Radio, HCJB and many others.

December programming is an excellent time to correspond (and verify) your favorite holiday specials.

Take some time to enjoy the sounds of this special time of the year from across the world.

I have to admit a certain amount of disappointment and confusion with the Channel Africa QSL. They have always been listed in WRTH as having a QSL card. Not only did they not verify, but the report was eventually just passed on to Sentech, the national transmitter owner who QSL'ed with a letter. Sentech has always been represented in the WRTH as having a QSL card as well. This holds true for the new 2012 edition.

When was the last time anyone has received a QSL card directly from Channel Africa? When was the last time anyone has ever received a QSL card from Sentech? Inquring minds want to know!(Muick)

The DX Challenge is Back !

After a lengthy absence, the Shortwave DX Challenge is back and it runs for the month of January. Log as many countries as you can in the month. All loggings must be of at least five minutes in length with as much program detail as possible. Only shortwave broadcast and time signal stations count. Relay transmissions count as the country where the transmitter is located. All entries must be e-mailed in or postmarked by February 15th. NO HAND WRITTEN ENTRIES. I'm getting too old to decipher chicken scrawl. You can also send in entries as you log them and they will be tallied together at the end.

And there will be a nice prize for whoever logs the most countries over the month of January.

Don't let Voice of America broadcasts go static

Voice of America (VOA), the jewel in America's public diplomacy effort abroad, is set to be streamlined. Some programs can be downsized. But VOA is in the national interest, especially as Russia, China, and Iran expand state-supported media. Cuts should be handled with care.

Marti Program Bridging Cuban and American Business

An innovative Martí program focuses on the future of Cuba through conversations bridging Cuban and American business people as part of the next episode of Avanza Cuba (Cuba Forward), scheduled for December 14, 2011 from 11am to 12pm.

The program, to be broadcast from Radio Martí’s Miami studios, will feature Cuban bloggers and entrepreneurs from within the island, in conversation with Cuban business owners in Union City, New Jersey, as well as other special guests and audience participation. The episode focuses on the nascent Cuban business community made up of "cuentapropistas", a uniquely Cuban term for entrepreneurs which roughly translates as "being-on-their-owns".

“We are providing a unique opportunity for Cubans interested in starting or operating small businesses to ask questions and share their experiences with practitioners in Miami, London and New Jersey,” said Carlos Garcia Pérez, Director of Radio and TV Martí. “The incremental relaxation of the market rules in Cuba invites a rich conversation about the current environment as well as the future of the Island.

Avanza Cuba premiered in September 2011, featuring prominent Cuban bloggers, professors, and students discussing new media and the role of technology in Cuba. The program incorporates all of the Martí’s radio, TV, and online streams and aims to create a dialogue and share information to help Cubans make educated decisions about the future of their country.

Avanza Cuba moves beyond politics to foster discussion of topics of interest to the audience, including creating opportunities to use social media and fostering Cuban entrepreneurship.

In response to the first Avanza Cuba program, notable Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez Tweeted: “A lot of people calling me from the provinces after today’s show. Incredible how many Cubans listen to the ‘forbidden radio.’”

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 - 11 December 2011
Solar activity was at predominantly low levels for the summary period. From 05 - 06 December, two regions dominated the disk in size and solar flare production, Region 1363 (S21, L=108, class/area=Eki/620 on 05 December) and Region 1362 (N08, L=131, lass/area=Eso/220 on 03 December). Both regions produced multiple C-class events with Region 1363 responsible for the largest event of the period, a C6/Sf flare at 05/2325 UTC. From 07 - 10 December, Region 1374 (S17, L=352, class/area=Dso/210 on 11 December) and
Region 1375 (N08, L=356, class/area=Cso/140 on 11 December) dominated the disk, each producing several small C-class events. The only days of the summary period with activity at very low levels were 06 and 11 December . Multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed throughout the week, however, none of them were geoeffective.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels from 05 - 09 December. A return to background levels was observed on 10 December.

Geomagnetic activity was at predominantly quiet levels during the summary period. From 05 - 08 December, quiet conditions were observed at all latitudes. On 09 December, an isolated period of active conditions was observed at high latitudes. On 10 December, quiet to unsettled conditions were observed as a coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) moved into a geoeffective position. Solar wind speed increased from around 330 km/s to around 500 km/s at the ACE spacecraft and the total IMF rose to around 11 nT. Another isolated period of active conditions was observed at high latitudes on 11 December as a result of the CH HSS effects.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 December - 09 January 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at predominately low levels with a chance for isolated M-class activity from 12 - 22 December. A decrease to predominantly low levels is expected from 23 -24 December as Regions 1374 and 1375 rotate off the disk. An increase to a slight chance for M-class activity is expected on 25 December as Region 1363 returns and remain for the duration of the forecast period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels the entire forecast period (14 December - 09 January).

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at mostly quiet levels from 14 - 25 December. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected on 26 - 29 December due to effects from a recurrent CH HSS. A return to quiet levels is expected from 30 December - 04 January followed by an increase to quiet to unsettled levels on 05 - 06 January due to effects from a second recurrent CH HSS. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the period.

The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, known for its unbroken string of Monday evening concerts over 45 years in the Greenwich Village Jazz Club, ends the programme. Thad Jones compositions are the mainstay of their music.

WWCR sets Dec 10 for DRM broadcast

A special 30-minute edition of "Ask WWCR," hosted by Brady Murray and Jerry Plummer of NASB member WWCR in Nashville, will air at 1930 UTC Saturday, December 10 on 7590 kHz in DRM digital mode, beamed to Europe from a 100-kw transmitter in Armenia. The program is part of the weekly "DRM Mix" block sponsored by Spaceline of Bulgaria which runs from 1800-2100 UTC on the same frequency. In this special program, Brady and Jerry will present a profile of WWCR, its history, programming and personnel, as well as some information about other privately-owned shortwave stations in the United States.

The Koenigsberg-Kaliningrad Story

One of the great landmarks in the city of Koenigsberg for more than 700 years was its grand Castle. Construction of this monumental edifice began during the year 1257, soon after the city was founded by its early Prussian ancestors. Over the centuries, Koenigsberg Castle was enlarged and beautified, and it became the pride and honor of the city’s inhabitants.

During the year 1944, the city of Koenigsberg and its grand Castle were largely destroyed in aerial bombardment, and the last standing ruins were completely blown up 24 years later to make way for the modernization of the city. Today, all that is known about this once famous Castle is what is told about it in various forms of historical documentation.

The city itself was founded two years earlier than the Castle, in the year 1255. It became an important German city on the edge of the Baltic Sea, and it was at one stage the capital for the German state of Prussia. The city was taken over by the USSR on April 9, 1945, and during the following year, the name of the city was Russianized from the German Koenigsberg into Kaliningrad.

The surrounding territory, also known in earlier times as Koenigsberg, became the Kaliningrad Oblast, a province in the Russian Empire. However, in 1991, when several of the Russian states became independent, this left Kaliningrad separated from the mother country by more than 200 miles, with three or four independent countries in between.

Thus, Kaliningrad is described these days as a Russian exclave; that is, Kaliningrad is recognized as an integral part of Russia, though it is separated geographically from the main territory of Russia itself.

A major radio broadcasting station was established in Koenigsberg back more than half a century ago, a radio station that rivaled the Castle in importance. So, here in Wavescan today, this is the story of wireless & radio in Koenigsberg & Kaliningrad.

Back almost 100 years ago, a wireless communication station was established in old Koenigsberg, and this was identified on air in the German version of Morse Code with the two letters KO, remembering that there was an umlaut, 2 dots, over the letter O.

On June 14, 1924, the first radio broadcasting service was officially inaugurated in Koenigsberg, with 1½ kW on 462 metres, 650 kHz. This service was identified, not by callsign letters, but as Ostmarken Rundfunk. Because the city was important, so also was the radio station; and over the years, this grew in size, in programming and in equipment.

A second program channel was implemented in the early 1930s; and a 100 kW mediumwave transmitter was installed in 1937 for broadcast on 1031 kHz. At this stage, the 2nd channel was on the air with 2 kW on 1348 kHz. With the commencement of open hostilities in continental Europe in September 1939, it was stated that “a powerful broadcasting station was already on the air in Koenigsberg”.

During the following year, 1940, a new radio program was inaugurated over the main broadcasting system in Berlin; and in English, it was known as the “Radio Koenigsberg Program”, a nationwide broadcast indicating the national unity of the German territories. Soon afterwards, the production of this national program was transferred to the studios in Koenigsberg itself; and then in 1944, this program was transferred to Oslo in Norway.

In 1946, Koenigsberg Radio, or more accurately, Kaliningrad Radio now that the territory was part of the USSR, was listed with just 2½ kW on mediumwave 959 kHz. During the following year, the administration of Kaliningrad Radio was transferred from Kaliningrad itself to the major radio station located in Leningrad. Kaliningrad thus became simply an authorized relay station for Russian programming from the Russian motherland, with the mediumwave transmitter identified in Russian documents as RV129.

In 1953, a 135 kW Hungarian made mediumwave transmitter was installed at Kaliningrad and this was inaugurated on 1386 kHz as transmitter RV143. Eleven years later, a Tesla mediumwave transmitter was installed as RV 144. Interestingly, at this stage, the transmitters were physically located south of Kaliningrad city, though they were officially listed as Kaunus in Lithuania, some distance further north.

Then, in December 1974, a 2½ megawatt mediumwave transmitter was installed at what became a huge new transmitter site south of Sovetsk. This unit was described as the word’s most powerful mediumwave transmitter, made by Taifun, and it was heard on either 1116 or 1386 kHz.

At the same time, two Tesla shortwave transmitters at 20 kW were also installed at this new location. Soon afterwards, additional high powered shortwave transmitters were also installed at this location, rated at 50 100 & 250 kW. These units were in use as a relay facility for Radio Moscow programming, and also for jamming purposes.

When political circumstances in Europe changed and Russia dropped the jamming of incoming shortwave broadcasts, it is reported that a total of 30 jamming transmitters were removed from the Kaliningrad facility for installation at other locations throughout their country. It would be presumed that these transmitters were installed at their new locations for communication and broadcast usage.

During the year 1993, a tourist visited the massive Kaliningrad radio station, and he stated that the station is located a little north of the town of Bolshakovo. He described the massive mediumwave antenna system with three beams, each consisting of two parallel rows of four towers, each 850 feet tall. There was also a tall longwave tower, and a bevy of diamond shaped shortwave rhombic antennas.

In early 2006, this Kaliningrad radio station left the air on shortwave; and two years later, the mediumwave transmissions also left the air.

However, beginning in February 1995, international radio monitors noted the Kaliningrad station on air with the relay of programming from other international broadcasting stations on numerous occasions. In addition to the regular relay of programming from Radio Moscow, Radio Netherlands from Hilversum in Holland was noted first, with many others subsequently, including United Christian Broadcasters, BBC London, ABC Denmark, Voice of the Mediterranean, and lots of others as well.

These days, Kaliningrad radio at the Bolshakovo transmitter site is listed as follows:-
* European Longwave: 150 kW on 171 kHz
* Mediumwave: 50 kW on 549 kHz & 873 kHz, 150 kW on 1143 kHz, 1200 kW on 1215 kHz
* Shortwave: 9 transmitters at 80 kW

Numerous QSL cards from many organizations are known for the longwave, mediumwave and shortwave broadcasts via the Kaliningrad transmitters, including a picture card from Radio Netherlands showing the Kaliningrad facility.

Koenigsberg was noted for its grand Castle as an ancient landmark; and yes, in more recent time, another significant landmark was the massive radio station in Kaliningrad, verily one of the world’s largest.

Found at Last! The World’s 1st Reception Report!

This has to be it! The world’s 1st reception report! A reception report that was written down from an unexpected wireless transmission heard back 134 years ago, and the details were also published in local newspapers at the time. This is the story.

More than 130 years ago, the noted Alexander Graham Bell ran his first telephone line from New York City to Boston, and on April 2, 1877, the first voice message was sent along this line. Soon afterwards, telephone & telegraph operators began to notice cross-talk between nearby lines, in Morse Code and subsequently in voice.

It should be remembered also that three months after this first message was transmitted between New York & Boston, the original Bell Telephone Co was organized to develop their new telephone system throughout the United States. Even the telephone itself was still very new at the time.

At another location, though still in New York state, Mr. Charles Rathbone was a member of a prominent business family that supported the Dudley Observatory in Albany New York, an observatory that now forms a part of Union University. The Rathbone family had installed their own private telephone line running from their family home to the observatory.

During the evening of Tuesday August 28, 1877, when the invention of the telephone was still
less than five months old, Charles Rathbone was startled to hear music, vocal music, coming through his telephone system. Initially, he thought that the music must be coming from a vocal group at the nearby observatory, but, as he quickly discovered, this was not the case.

Charles Rathbone made a list of the pieces of music he heard, and he sent this list to the local newspapers, giving all of the details of what he heard and the conditions under which this music concert was observed. This reception report was published in the local newspapers. As a result of this publicity, it was discovered that an experimental concert had been transmitted over a telegraph wire running between New York & Saratoga Springs.

A few days later, another musical concert in Troy was transmitted over another telephone circuit, this time running from Troy to Albany. Again, this music program was observed on another nearby telephone system. Later, during that same evening, music was placed into the telephone circuit running from New York to Albany, and cross-talk programming was heard on another nearby telephone circuit.

According to the contemporary reports, music programs were heard as cross-talk programming on six separate occasions between August 28 & September 11, in the year 1877. Mr Charles Rathbone heard all six of the programs, and in addition, two other independent observers living in Providence, Rhode Island, heard the same programming on their telephone systems on five of these six occasions.

One of the observers in Providence was Dr. Channing, and he published his observations of these music transmissions. During these events, it was discovered, music concerts were given in the Western Union Office in New York City for the benefit of telephone listeners in Saratoga, Troy & Albany.

A current map of the entire area shows that all five cities - New York, Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs & Providence - are all spread over an area well over 100 miles wide, and all of the telephone systems were not interconnected at the time of these music transmissions. So the question remains: How did the music programs transfer from one telephone system to another?

An investigation into the circumstances at the time indicate that some of the telephone systems involved in these experiments did share a nearby grounding. However, for those circuits without a nearby grounding, it was discovered that the different telephone systems shared the same telephone poles for distances running up to many miles.

Thus these cross-transmissions were by what is called induction, rather similar to the transfer of electricity in a power transformer from one winding to another. Truly, this first reception report of a music concert from one telephone system to another was by wireless transmission, though not by radio as we understand it today. The reception report of this wireless transmission by induction was published in local newspapers at the time, and that was way back 134 years ago, in the year 1837.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces the release of our 42nd QSL card. This is the seventh QSL card commemorating 2011 as RFA’s 15th anniversary. RFA’s first broadcast was in Mandarin Chinese on September 29, 1996 at 2100 UTC. Ms. Libby Liu has been the president of Radio Free Asia since 2005. As president, Ms. Liu provides strategic and operational direction to meet RFA’s mission of providing balanced, objective news to listeners in East Asian countries where such news is unavailable. Acting as a substitute for indigenous free media, RFA concentrates its coverage on events occurring in and/or affecting the countries to which we broadcast. Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA currently broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin, the Wu dialect, Vietnamese, Tibetan (Uke, Amdo, and Kham), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in its editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of its target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of its broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest. RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports. Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions. RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener. RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at www.techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX’ers, but also from its general listening audience. Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal to close down Dec. 31

Guido Schotmans writes: Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal (RVi) will cease to exist after 31 December 2011. That also means that the Wolvertem transmitter (near Brussels) operating on 927 kHz will be switched off on 31 December at 23:59:59 hours local time. Norkring is the owner of the transmitter. It is unclear if they will put airtime on the market for rent. Mails to them are left unanswered. But I think the transmitter is in bad shape. It is left on the air at night with unmodulated carrier since several weeks ago. We have seen this too during extremely cold periods in recent winters. So I think there are no plans to use the site for other purposes.

On RVi’s website will only be mentioned that the service has ceased while Radio 1 and 2 are now available worldwide via the internet and satellite.
