Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 - 28 November 2021

Solar activity was at very low levels with only B-class activity observed. The largest flare was a B8.4 at 28/0859 UTC from Region 2900 (S26, L=256, class/area, Dso/160 on 28 Nov). This was also the most active region on the disk during the highlight period. Other notable activity included an approximate 10-degree filament eruption centered near S36E33 and observed in GONG H-alpha imagery beginning at 24/0958 UTC. The associated CME was observed in LASCO coronagraph imagery beginning at 24/1412 UTC. WSA/Enlil modeling indicated an Earth-directed component with an arrival time of late on 27 Nov. No other Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the highlight period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 23, 24 and 26 Nov due to CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 22, 25, 27 and 28 Nov. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached unsettled levels on 22-23 Nov due to influences from a negative polarity CH HSS. Unsettled levels were also reached on 27-28 Nov due to the arrival of the aforementioned CME from 24 Nov. A relatively weak shock was observed near 27/2153 UTC causing enhancements in solar wind parameters. The total field reached a maximum of 17 nT during the event at 28/0057 UTC, while the Bz component reached a maximum southward deviation of -14 nT at the same time. Solar wind speeds reached a maximum of near 400 km/s.

Quiet levels were observed on 24-26 Nov with a nominal solar wind. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 29 November - 25 December 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 10-12 Dec and 20-23 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels early on 29 Nov due to lingering influences from the 24 Nov CME. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 03-05 Dec, 12-14 Dec, and 17-18 Dec due to influences from recurrent CH HSS activity. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected for the remainder of the period.

Encore is a one-man operation. WRMI and Channel 292 are very generous with their air-time but Encore still costs around 200 Dollars/Euros a month to broadcast.

This week's Program - First broadcast this coming Saturday by Channel 292 - starts with some ballet music from Poulenc, some incidental music from Fauré, and a modern hymn to the Titanic by Gavin Bryars.
After that - the theme from Paul Hindemith's The Four Temperaments, some more Gavin Bryars, and a sonata for recorder and basso continuo composed by eighteenth-century Neapolitan Francesco Mancini.
The last section of the program has two modern pieces by contemporary acoustic ensembles and finishes with part of Schubert's String Quartet No. 13.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

 

Hello friends,

Happy Thanksgiving to listeners in the United States. No Thanksgiving is complete without tuning in and decoding Shortwave Radiogram. You can do this Friday at 0030-0100 UTC (Thursday 1930 EST, 1830 CST, 1730 MST, 1630 PST) on 9265 kHz from WINB Pennsylvania. Unattended reception and decoding are possible while eating Thanksgiving dinner, walking it off, sleeping it off, or watching football. 

Slow scan television (SSTV) is similar to the MFSK images we transmit on Shortwave Radiogram. Many Shortwave Radiogram listeners enjoy receiving and decoding SSTV images from the International Space Station. More such transmissions are scheduled for December 1 at 1210 to 1910 UTC, and December 2 1140-1720 UTC. The frequency is 145.8 MHz in the two-meter amateur radio band, narrow FM mode. Decode the PD120 SSTV using MMSSTV or similar software. (MultiPSK decodes SSTV.) 

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 231) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1330 UTC), and 2010DFS in Shimane Prefecture, Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz). The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 15 Nov due to CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 16-21 Nov. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 15-17 Nov due to CH HSS influences. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 18-21 Nov. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 November - 18 December 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels on 30 Nov - 14 Dec due to the expected return of Regions 2894 (S27, L=85, class/area Dao/130 on 12 Nov) and 2895 (N24, L=73, class/area Dso/130 on 10 Nov). Very low levels are expected on 22-29 Nov, and 15-18 Dec. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 10-12 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 27 Nov and 12-14 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected for the rest of the outlook period.

Weekend schedules from Shortwave Radiogram

 


Hello friends

One more reminder that WRMI (on its frequencies used for Shortwave Radiogram) has, since the North American time changed, stayed with UTC for its program schedule. So, for most of Europe and North America, Shortwave Radiogram is one hour earlier by local time. WINB, on the other hand, stays with US Eastern Time for its schedule, so Shortwave Radiogram is at the same time by local time, but one hour later by UTC. The exception is the WINB DRM frequency of 15750 kHz, where the schedule stays with UTC. The updated Shortwave Radiogram schedule is below. It's a good idea to keep at least one clock (or watch) in your house set to UTC, preferably with a 24-hour readout.

For this weekend, and probably next weekend, we still have autumn foliage to provide many colorful photos for our image transmissions. There will be ten MFSK64 images this weekend, two connected to the news stories. As winter approaches, we will have to be more creative in finding suitable images.

New edition of DXtreme Station Log 15 released

DXtreme Station Log 15

DXtreme Software™ has released a new version of its popular logging program for Amateur Radio operators: DXtreme Station Log 15™.

This new edition will have a wide appeal for shortwave, mediumwave, and amateur radio operators.

New Features

▪ New in DX Spot Checker — The new List Commands box contains an unlimited supply of user-defined commands, which can be sent to the cluster server immediately. Station Log 15 ships with list commands that query the cluster server for recent FT8 Fox/Hound activity.

▪ New in JT Log Entry Processing — Station Log 15 continues to manage the pre-population of log files for both WSJT-X and JTDX, and now logs new contacts from those log files instead of from all.txt files. This feature increases reliability because the log files are ADIF-standard and the all.txt files are proprietary, subject to possible format changes. This feature also provides users with more time after the QSO ends to log each contact. JT Log Entry Processing lets users keep their eyes glued to WSJT-X or JTDX interfaces for worked-before status indications, important when using modes like FT8, FT4, and others.

▪ New User Defined Fields — The User Defined Fields tab now has 14 fields (twice as many as previously) spread across two sections, letting users enter and track more information.

▪ New Audio Application Support — Station Log 15 supports the use of a user-supplied, third-party audio application for recording, playing, and editing audio clips in a variety of audio formats. Audio applications are ideal for recording audio from a USB-connected radio.

▪ New Outgoing QSL Web Service Support — Station Log 15 has a new Outgoing QSL Web Service facility that makes it easy to send official QSL cards via a third-party QSL web site.

▪ New in DXCC Analytics, WAS Analytics — After displaying a list of entities or states worked or verified, users can now click a Needed List hyperlink to generate a list of still-needed entities or states by mode, data element, and band.

▪ New Variables-Based Delimited Records Facility — This facility allows users to create and output station-based reports and exports of their own design, to suit their own purposes. For example, users can generate delimited files for import into applications that do not support ADIF files. These applications can include database managers, QSL generators, spreadsheets, word processors, and more.

Standard Features
DXtreme Station Log 15 lets hams log their contacts and import ADIF files from other programs. It supports major call sign subscription services and offers the following multimedia and advanced functions:

▪ DX Spot Checker™ — Receives DX spots from Telnet-based servers and determines whether QSOs are needed for new or verified DXCC® entities, band-entities, mode-entities, or VUCC grids. The information displays on Rich Site Feed and Grid Feed tabs.

▪ Automatic LoTW Upload — Lets users set Station Log 15 so it uploads each log entry to LoTW automatically when added, capturing and saving QSO Record Status from the LoTW server as part of the process. Modified log entries can be uploaded as well. If desired, users can disable automatic uploading and can upload log entries to LoTW semiautomatically and manually in batches whenever they want to.

▪ LoTW Reporting — Lets users perform searches and run reports filtered by LoTW QSO Record Status, which indicates whether log entries are On, or Not On, the LoTW server following upload or QSL-updating. Users can also perform searches and run reports filtered by LoTW QSL Record Status, which indicates the date of each LoTW QSL record processed by DXtreme’s LoTW QSL Update Utility.

▪ DX Atlas Integration — Performs Afreet DX Atlas azimuth plots from the user’s location to that of a spotted or logged station and creates maps for reports.

▪ Rig Control — Tunes/retrieves frequencies and modes from supported rigs through integration with Afreet Omni-Rig.

▪ QSL Processing — Creates QSL and address labels for physical QSLs, and supports the ARRL’s LoTW facility, including capturing LoTW QSL records as digital images.

▪ QSL Imaging™ — Lets users scan and capture QSL cards and electronic QSLs into their log entries for browsing and viewing any time they want to.

▪ Improv Imaging™ — Lets users associate adhoc images with their log entries separate from our popular QSL Imaging™ facility. Users can capture, scan, or paste any image and save it as a single-page .jpg, or single- or multi-page .tif. Improv images popular with users include signals on a spectrum analyzer or waterfall, QSOs conducted on ATV and data for applications, and equipment used during contacts.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 08 - 14 November 2021

Solar activity reached moderate levels (R1-Minor) at 09/1702 UTC due to a long duration M2 flare from Region 2891 (N17, L=212, class/area Dki/350 on 29 Oct). Region 2891 had rotated around the west limb at the time of the event, as a result, this CME was not Earth-directed. Solar activity was low on 08 and 13 Nov. Solar activity was very low on 10-12, 14 Nov. There were no notable CMEs observed during the reporting period. 

The greater then 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit increased from background levels to 2.6 pfu at 09/2125 UTC. This increase was in response to the aforementioned M2 flare from Region 2891. Proton flux values remained below S1 (Minor) levels throughout the reporting period. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reach high levels on 08-09 and 13-14 Nov. A peak flux of 3,319 pfu was observed at 08/1850 UTC by the GOES-16 spacecraft. Moderate levels were observed throughout the remainder of the reporting period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached unsettled levels on 08-10 Nov due to residual solar wind effects from the CME that arrived on 04 Nov. Quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the reporting period. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 15 November - 11 December 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class flaring throughout the outlook period. There is a chance for moderate levels on 20 Nov - 03 Dec with the return of M-flare producing Region 2891 to the visible disk. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 15-16 Nov with moderate levels anticipated throughout the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 16-17, 28-29 Nov due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

It's the first weekend of the month, and that means Finland's Scandinavian Weekend Radio is set for another monthly broadcast. 

Scandinavian Weekend Radio (SWR) transmitter site is located in the city of Virrat in the Upper Tampere Region, in Liedenpohja village. SWR broadcast on the first Saturday of every month for 24 hours on shortwave, mediumwave, and FM, beginning at 00:01 local time, UTC +2h (Summer +3h)

SWR offers an alternative for radio operators who are interested in the opportunity to participate in private radio. The station is free of playlists, and it contributes to the radio hobby.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 25 - 31 October 2021

Solar activity ranged from low to high levels. Low levels occurred on 25, 27, and 30-31 Oct. Moderate levels were reached on 26 and 29 Oct as Region 2891 (N17, L=212, class/area Dki/350 on 29 Oct) produced M1 flare activity at 26/0247 UTC, 26/1557, and 29/0242 UTC.

High levels were reached on 28 Oct as Region 2887 (S25, L=278, class/area Dki/440 on 24 Oct) produced an M1/1n flare at 28/0740 UTC, an M2/1f flare at 28/1028 UTC, and an X1/2n flare at 28/1535 UTC. Two CMEs were modeled during the period. The first was a CME off the SE limb beginning at 26/2024 UTC although the source region was unclear. It was speculated to come from Region 2887. WSA ENLIL modeling showed a potential glancing arrival late on 30 Oct. The second CME was associated with the X1 flare on 28 Oct. Type II (1457 km/s) and IV radio emissions were observed coinciding with the flare and WSA ENLIL modeling of the event showed an arrival of mid to late on 30 Oct as well, although parameterization of the event was difficult. 

Coinciding with the X1 flare on 28 Oct was a greater than 10 MeV and 100 MeV proton event. The greater than 10 MeV event began at 28/1740 UTC, reached a peak flux of 29 pfu (S1-Minor) at 29/0250 UTC and began at 30/2100 UTC, reaching a peak flux of 11pfu at 30/2105 UTC and ending at 30/2130 UTC due to an enhancement from the 26 Oct CME. The greater than 100 MeV proton event began at 28/1635 UTC, reached a peak flux of 7.3 pfu at 28/1815 UTC and ended at 30/0440 UTC. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux continued to decline towards background levels on 31 Oct - 01 Nov. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was observed at 25/1700 UTC 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels on 25 Oct through late on 30 Oct under a nominal solar wind environment. Around 30/1800 UTC, a weak discontinuity was observed that was believed to be the arrival of the 26 Oct CME. The total field increased to 11 nT while the Bz component deflected southward to a maximum of -10 nT at 30/2045 UTC. Solar wind speed slowly increased to 400 km/s. A weak shock was observed beginning at 31/0914 UTC which is believed to be the arrival of a glancing blow from the 28 Oct CME. The total field increased from 4 nT to 13 nT while the Bz component briefly reached a maximum southward deflection of -11 nT at 31/1124 UTC. Solar wind speed continued to rise to a peak of 465 km/s at 31/1905 UTC. By 31/1500 UTC, the total field had calmed to between 5-8 nT and remained there through the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with an isolated active period late on 30 Oct followed by unsettled to G1 (Minor) storming on 31 Oct. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 November - 27 November 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for further M-class flare activity (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) on 01-08 Nov as Regions 2887 and 2891 transit across the visible disk. Very low to low levels are expected on 09-15 Nov. Low levels with a chance for M-class flares are likely again on 16-27 Nov as Regions 2887 and 2891 return to the visible disk on 16 Nov and 21 Nov, respectively. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit as Regions 2887 and 2891 decay and simplify magnetically. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with a chance for high levels on 02-03 Nov due to CME influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 01 Nov followed by quiet to unsettled levels on 02 Nov as CME effects diminish. Unsettled levels are expected once again on 04-05 Nov and 15-16 Nov due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, Friday-Sunday

 

Hello friends,

Most of North America will move clocks back one hour on November 7. Europe did its time change last weekend. (One of our news items this week is about what we in North America call "daylight saving time.")

On the frequencies used for Shortwave Radiogram, WRMI's schedule stays with UTC, so adjust your local times as necessary. (For example, Sunday's red-eye edition will be at 3:00 am Eastern rather than 4:00 am Eastern -- not that your body will know the difference.)

WINB on the other hand keeps its schedule on 9265 kHz pegged to Eastern Time, so as of November 11, the Shortwave Radiogram will be one hour later by UTC.

To add to the confusion, WINB's DRM transmission of Shortwave Radiogram stays at 1500-1530 UTC on Fridays. The frequency, I think, also stays at 15750 -- but tune around, especially in the 11 and 15 MHz bands -- for that distinctive hybrid DRM signal, if the WINB DRM is not on 15750 kHz.

This week's images (10 x MFSK64) reflect the changing weather -- from flowers in Germany to frost in Maryland. Shortwave propagation is also changing with the season.

Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg.
