'My Life as a Dead Man' - Vikram Kapur

The first Honourable Mention in our Radio Books competition hails from New Delhi, India. He's working on a PhD at the University of East Anglia where he also teaches creative writing. He has had two novels published. His winning story 'My Life as a Dead Man' is told from a very interesting perspective, as the title suggests.

Earthbeat this week will be a special documentary-type programme telling the little publicised story of one of Myanmar's greatest tragedies - the unchecked and largely untreated problem of HIV/AIDS. Today there are 80,000 people in the country who need anti-retroviral treatment - just over 10 percent of them are getting it. The rest will die in the next couple of years.

In the north where jade mines, rampant IV drug use and proximity to China have provided a fatal combination, a local aid worker estimates that one in three households have been affected by AIDS.

Earthbeat has on the ground interviews with health workers and patients in Myanmar.

Radio Emmanuel QSL policy change?

QSL Policy Changed?
After numerous attempts for getting a reception report for the Ukrainian broadcast of Radio Emmanuel verified, I was able to get a reply from Sabine Gawol Media broadcast Sabine.Gawol@t-systems .com Her reply was this: “To your reception report: Since 01.01.2008 Christian Vision is operating at their own liability over the transmission station in Juelich, which is bought by Christian Vision. So, I am not able to confirm the following reception report. I'm sorry.”.....
I did get a reply from Walter Brodowsky, (prior to my reply from Ms Gawol) who sated that “My colleague Sabine Gawol will respond to your reception reports” So his statues at verifying reports is no long there. I hope the statues of getting verification replies from Media Broadcast (a.k.a. DTK-Juelich) improves; For in a past Mr. Walter Brodowsky was excellent in this position.

DX Quiz in Ardic DX Club

In 2008 our Ardic DX Club celebrates its 9th anniversary. For nine years it has been the primary source of information for DX enthusiasts all over the world, particularly for Indian Dxers. In order to celebrate this event, a quiz is being organised.
The quiz is open to anyone, regardless of location or club membership. The quiz does not solely deal with Indian Dxing, but covers very different radio aspects. Answering 20 questions Dxers can show their radio knowledge.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
02 - 08 June 2008

Solar activity was very low. No flares were detected. The visible disk was spotless.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels through the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet levels during 02 - 05 June. Activity increased to quiet to unsettled levels for the rest of the period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated a gradually subsiding recurrent high-speed stream was in progress at the start of the period. A peak solar wind velocity of 615 km/sec was detected at the start of the period. Velocities gradually decreased during 02 - 06 June with a low of 327 km/sec detected at 06/0213. A solar
sector boundary crossing (away (+) to toward (-)) occurred at approximately 07/0900 UTC. The boundary crossing was associated with an increase in velocities (peak 551 km/sec at 07/1604 UTC), increased IMF Bt (peak 10 nT at 0856 UTC), and periods of mostly
southward IMF Bz (minimum -7 nT at 07/0652 UTC). Velocities began to gradually decrease after 08/1400 UTC and reached a low of 302 km/sec by the close of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
11 June - 07 July 2008

Solar activity is expected to be very low.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 19 - 23 June.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels during 11 - 15 June. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels during 16 - 19 June due a recurrent coronal hole high-speed wind stream. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 20 - 24 June. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels during 25 - 28 June due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed wind stream. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 29 June - 02
July. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels during 03 - 05 July due to recurrence. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during the last two days of the period.

CNR-1 frequencies, 0807-0827, June 2, heard with the national news conference, starts with a statement read in Chinese, then into questions and answers in Chinese and English. Not broadcast on the weekend.

6200, PBS-XZDT, Lhasa, 1205-1328, May 30 & June 1, 2 and 3, with fair reception, still only with CNR-1 relay.

4905 // 4920, PBS Lhasa, May 30 & June 1, 2 and 3, with no relay of CNR-1, decent signal.

6060 // 9740 // 12015, Sichuan PBS, 1139-1245, June 1, religious choir with what sounded like Christian songs, segment of songs by kids, interview with children. June 1 was International Children's Day and a big day here in China, with parents taking their kids to the park and doing other fun things. Even in the quake area they celebrated the day. Found that most China stations today played segments of children's songs. 7225 not heard.

3280 // 4950, Shanghai PBS, *1200-1245, June 1, the SW sign-on time varies a lot, often heard hours before 1200. // 97.7 FM, which seems on 24 hours a day. Heard with many children's programs for International Children's Day.

Easy FM (CRI), follow-up detail: the "China Drive" program is broadcast twice a day, Mon.-Fri.

4900, VOS, *1200-1208, June 3, suddenly on in Amoy (clearly not Chinese), good reception. Their sign-on time does not vary.

6185, checked here a number of times after 1400 (when it's a clear frequency) looking for CHBC, but nothing was heard. 4830 always had a decent signal. (Ron Howard, Shanghai, China, Eton E5)

Do not recall 6003 being jammed this badly in the past. No jamming present on 6003 for June 1.

6020, Shiokaze, June 2, strong jamming already here before 1400 sign-on, same type of jamming as against 9940 (North Korea Reform Radio).

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
26 May - 01 June 2008

Solar activity was very low. No X-ray flares were observed during the period. Region 997 (S08, L=183, class/area, Axx/010 on 26 May). This region decayed to spotless plage on 27 May, and was still on the visible solar disk as the summary period ended.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during 26 - 27 May.

The geomagnetic field was at quiet to active levels during the summary period. On 26 - 27 May activity was at mostly quiet levels. At approximately 0130 UTC on 28 May a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) was observed at the ACE spacecraft. Shortly thereafter the onset of a coronal hole high speed stream was observed at 0500 UTC on 28 May. During this timeframe activity increased to quiet to unsettled levels. Solar wind speed values also increased to 552
km/s around 0130 UTC on 29 May, with interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) values ranging between +/- 8 nT. On 30 May activity increased to quiet to active levels, again, due to a coronal hole high speed stream. Wind speeds gradually increased to a maximum of 657 km/s at
approximately 0730 UTC on 31 May, with IMF values ranging between +/- 6 nT. As wind speed values leveled off at around 600 km/s, the geomagnetic field declined to quiet to unsettled levels through the end of the summary period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
04 - 30 June 2008

Solar activity is expected to be very low.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 04 - 08 June and 19 - 23 June.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet levels 04 - 14 June. Activity is expected to increase to quiet to unsettled levels on 15 - 20 June, with isolated active periods possible on 17 June as a coronal hole high speed stream rotates into a geoeffective position. Conditions should decline to quiet levels on 21 - 24 June. On 25 - 29 June expect activity to increase again to quiet to unsettled levels due to a coronal hole high speed stream. Activity should decline to quiet levels on 30 June as the coronal hole high speed stream rotates out of a geoeffective position.

Additional transmission from Radio Voice of the People

In connection with Zimbabwe’s presidential run-off election on 27 June, Radio Voice of the People has introduced a third daily transmission via the Radio Netherlands Madagascar relay station. The broadcast is at 1100-1200 UTC on 11695 kHz, beam 265 degrees, power 250 kW. This transmission was introduced on 1 June.

Radio Pakistan update

As other correspondents have noted, Radio Pakistan has shifted all transmissions forward by one hour - presumably as of June 1st.The split frequencies are via faulty 100kW unit API-3, except Urdu at 1915-0045 - now at 1815-2345 - which is via API-4. This unit is used at other times to broadcast domestically the Current Affairs programme, and which should now air at 0100-0300 on 5940 and 1200-1700 on 4835. Other external transmissions are via 250kW units API-5 & 6. The Chinese service now at 1100-1200 has changed frequency from 11570 to 11510 // 9385. World Service in Urdu to West Europe at new time 1600-1800 will need a new frequency on 9 MHZ to avoid a clash with Radio Liberty in Uzbek on 9390 via Udorn at 1600-1700 - as pointed out by Wolfy. 7530 continues.

VOA director warns other nations on Web censorship

The head of the Voice of America has advised other countries that they must be on guard for Web censorship and “influence operations” disguised as journalism, and that they must protect journalists’ rights to gather information without fear of overzealous courts.
In a speech to a media conference in Bonn, VOA director Danforth Austin called for “a legal environment that provides a degree of protection for journalists,” saying that there should be a body of media law that includes “open-meeting laws, freedom-of-information statutes and transparency in the workings of government.”

WRN partners with DX Media to launch NME Radio on Sky

WRN, the international London-headquartered TV and radio transmission company, has partnered with DX Media, the multimedia music company, to launch NME Radio on the BSkyB digital platform. NME Radio is a new multi-platform radio station featuring the best alternative Indie music and the latest in music related news. The station is currently undergoing test transmissions on Sky and will launch officially on the 24th June on channel 0184.

NME Radio will also launch on additional digital platforms including Virgin Media and NME.com website. Sammy Jacob, founder of Xfm and Managing Director and Co Founder DX Media, will co-ordinate the launches across the various platforms.

The station’s move onto digital platforms follows the launch of NME TV in November last year and is being operated under licence by multimedia music company DX Media.
NME is a British weekly music magazine.

Radio Guaruja Paulista will stop relaying Radio Globo and broadcast their own programmes, the 3235 transmitter will be moved to Guaruja and they will soon be testing on 9715 with 1 kw. (Pedro de Castro, Brazil via Rich D'Angelo)

Ethiopia
Radio Ethiopia National Service heard May 3 on all three of its shortwave channels. 5990, 7110 and 9704.2 heard at 1830 tune-in with news in Vernacular; 5990 and 7110 both fair/clear and 9704.2 with usual heterodyne. 7110 blocked by CRI Hungarian between 1900-1930, but audible again with the other two outlets after 1930. Scheduled sign-off is 2100. (Tony Rogers, Birmingham, BDXC-UK) Radio Fana is audible here from about 1800-1900 and 2000-2100 on 6110 with a good signal. Also confirmed in parallel on much weaker 7210. There is co-channel interference from CRI between 1900 and 2000. (Dave Kenny, Caversham, BDXC-UK)

Latvia
Latvia Today seems to be regular now Sundays 1500-1600 on 9290. (Allen Dean, Lancashire)It was but then on June 1 switched to 1200-1300. (Mike Barraclough)

Papua New Guinea
The NBC shortwave transmitter on 4890 / 9675 in Port Moresby is still out of order. AusAid are now proposing replacing the transmission unit with two 25 kW shortwave transmitters. If this happens; I wouldn't expect it to happen until much later in the year or perhaps not until 2009. (Ian Baxter, Australia, Sw sites via Wolfgang Bueschel)

Romania
Radio Romania International transmitters at Galbeni are being replaced with new 300 kw units. This has meant a temporary reduction in frequencies used as only the Tiganesti site is being used. English to Western Europe is now 0530-0600 on 9655, 1200-1230 on 15220, 1700-1800 on 11735, 2030-2100 on 9515, 2200-2300 on 7185, to East Coast North America 2030-2100 on 11940, 2200-2300 on 9790, 0000-0100 on 9775, to West Coast North America 0300-0400 on 6150, to SE Asia 0300-0400 on 11895 and to the Pacific 0530-0600 on 17770. Saudi Arabia
At least two of the 500kw Riyadh transmitters were defective as of deadline, instead of audio they transmit a loud buzzing tone. On May 29 I monitored the 1600-1800 transmission on 15205, the buzzing tone was monitored from 14560 to 16130, for most of this range the buzzing was continuous turning into ignition like spikes for the last 100 kHz or so, it effectively made the entire 15 Mhz broadcasting band unusable here. I then monitored the transmission 1800-2300 on 11915, presumably the same transmitter, buzzing noted between 11710 and 12360. On May 31 15205 was similar when first checked 1600, had clear audio on 1700 re-check but when moved to 11915 was buzzing again at 1920. The 15435 transmitter was also buzzing at 1620, spreading 15427 to 15440. (Mike Barraclough)

Sweden
This year, the external service of Swedish Radio turns 70. On July 1, 1938 the first ever broadcast from Stockholm directed abroad was in Swedish. A year later, programmes in English and German went on air. Today Swedish Radio broadcasts in 13 different languages. Ahead of an anniversary programme in September, the Radio Sweden website will publish a special archive including the most interesting reports of the previous seven decades and an online competition. Vanuatu
After eight years in which most islands have not been able to receive Radio Vanuatu, the national broadcaster will return to speaking nationwide in the middle of the year.
