NOTE - Recently WRMI has slotted in an extra transmission of Encore on 5800 kHz at 03:00 on Saturday morning. If they do it will be the first airing of the new program. The reason being that I routinely upload the fresh mp3 files on Thursday evening to Channel 292 and WRMI.

NOTE - Apologies for the persistent RTTY on the LSB of the 13:00 UTC transmissions of Encore from WRMI on 15770 audible in parts of northern Europe in recent weeks. 

Special Broadcast soon:

On December 31, Radio Channel 292 will present a 2-hour special, Neujahrsgrüsse on Radio Channel 292 featuring segments from nine different music programs with classical, jazz, rock, Cuban, and volksmusik from 2300-0100 UTC on 3955 (10kw), 6070 (100kw from Moosbrunn) and 9670 (10kw) kHz. It will repeat on all three frequencies at 10kw from 0900-1100 UTC on January 1.   Time for the 10kw transmissions was donated by the station. Encore will be providing classical music.

This week's program starts with the overture from Mozart's The Magic Flute. Then we'll have some Erik Satie, followed by a little Stockhausen, and Abelard - by way of contrast. A Bach Partita, a Ravel Pavane, and Pastorale by Debussy follow on. The program ends with part of Mendelssohn's Violin concerto in E Minor - soloist Nicola Benedetti.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 December 2020

Solar activity was at very low to low levels. Low levels were observed on 14 Dec when Region 2792 (S22, L=103, class/area Bxo/010 on 15 Dec) produced a C4/Sf at 14/1437 UTC. Associated with this event was a Type II radio sweep with an estimated shock velocity of 606 km/s. 15-20 Dec saw solar activity at very low levels. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels throughout the period. The solar wind environment was at nominal levels with wind speeds between 348-416 km/s, total field ranged between 2-5 nT and the Bz component varied between +/-5 nT. The phi angle was in a predominately positive orientation throughout the period. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 December - 16 January 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the period with a slight chance for low levels from 21-31 Dec and 01 Jan and again on 14-16 Jan due to the flare potential from Region 2794 ( S18, L=347, class/area Hsx/120 on 20 Dec). 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 21 Dec, 30-31 Dec, and 01-16 Jan. High levels are anticipated on 23-29 Dec due to CH HSS effects. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 21-26 Dec and 05-06 Jan due to CH HSS influence. G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storms are likely on 23 Dec. Mostly quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the

outlook period.

This five and 1/2-hour event organized by Max Berger of SM Radio Dessau features ten different programs on Channel 292 who collaboratively bought time on Moosbrunn's 100kw transmitter.  This is an excellent chance to hear programs many listeners may not have heard before and listen to some of your favorites at 100kW. 

The program later repeats from Rohrbach on 3955 kHz from 1430 UTC using 10kw with time donated by Channel 292.   

From the Isle of Music and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot will share an hour from 1200-1300 UTC.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, December 18-20

Hello friends,

The reception of the Shortwave Radiogram was generally good last weekend. Thanks for all your reports. We in the US Atlantic seaboard had unusually good reception on 15770 kHz on 12 December after the usual difficult reception the day before. For listeners in Europe, this reminder that the the Sunday 0800-0830 UTC broadcast, 5850 and 7730 kHz, actually directed to Asia, might be audible this time of year, especially west and north.

Last weekend, we did not see any examples of dramatic multipath reception in the small image created by Roger in Germany. We'll try it again in the new year. The decoding of images under multipath conditions can look like this (from a previous show) ...

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 - 13 December 2020

Solar activity was reached low levels on 07 Dec due to a long-duration C7/1f flare observed at 07/1632 UTC from Region 2790 (S22, L=252, class/area=Hsx/80 on 10 Dec). The associated halo CME arrived at Earth just after 10/0000 UTC as an interplanetary shock, and with the driver directed south of the ecliptic plane. Solar activity was at very low levels throughout the remainder of the period with B-class flare activity. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period. 

The geomagnetic field reached active levels early on 10 Dec due to the arrival of the 07 Dec CME. Quiet or quiet to unsettled conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the period. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 December - 09 January 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 21-25 Dec, with normal to moderate levels expected to persist throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

On December 31, Radio Channel 292 will present a 2-hour special, Neujahrsgrüsse von Radio Channel 292 featuring segments from nine different music programs with classical, jazz, rock, Cuban, and volksmusik from 2300-0100 UTC on 3955 (10kw), 6070 (100kw from Moosbrunn) and 9670 (10kw) kHz.   It will repeat on all three frequencies at 10kw from 0900-1100 UTC on January 1.   The time for the 10kw transmissions was donated by the station. Encore will be providing classical music.

The second part of the hour has some film music, a sad song by Henry Purcell, a piece for flute and harp, and some Mozart.

Radio Truth announces transmitter issues

 

Dear Friends of Radio Truth (Radio Verdad)

Radio Truth's Omnitronix 1000 burned out on the fifth of December 2020 by 10:00 o'clock in the morning. Both power modules were burned out, so, Radio Truth is out of air ever since.

We fixed Module 'A' today and I went to test it. It worked alright for five minutes, and then, a fuse burned out. We plan to review it tomorrow.

Module 'B' has a card with a burned area on the printed circuit. It may need a new card, or rebuilding the old one.

So, this is the reason why we are off the air on short wave.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, December 11-13

 

Hello friends,

The reception last weekend was difficult in some parts of the world, but there were plenty of good decodes nevertheless. A good place to see results reported by listeners is the @SWRadiogram Twitter account. If you are not on Twitter, point your browser to https://twitter.com/swradiogram and scroll down.

During the Sunday 0800-0830 UTC broadcast, via receivers in Europe, we again had success sidestepping the STANAG 4285 data transmission on 5850 kHz. We did this by placing the closing announcements in MFSK32 at 2000 Hz rather than our usual 1500 Hz.  See examples here and here. This weekend the closing MFSK32 will be at 2000 Hz on all the transmissions. Your Fldigi RxID will take you to 2000 Hz, if: Configure > IDs > RsID ... "Searches passband" is selected and and "Retain tx freq lock" is deselected.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 181) are provided Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and by Octavio in Costa Rica (Sunday 2330 UTC) (also here). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

And speaking of Roger in Germany, he has prepared a small image that we can use to detect multipath shortwave (HF) reception. This will be the first of the images at 12:22 into the broadcast. Multipath reception occurs when the signal reaches you via the usual short path and by one or more other paths, possibly the long path around Earth. You can hear it as an echo. You can see it as visually interesting ghosts in your decoded images. If you are experiencing multipath, the header for the image might not work, so it's a good idea to record the show and try several times to make the header work from your playback.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with ten images (1 x MFSK32 and 9 x MFSK64).

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. All India Radio rebranding their Home Service

Effective on January 1, 2021, the airwaves in India will not be the same again, as All India Radio is rebranding all its Home Services on mediumwave and FM. 

Each State/ Union Territory (except Jammu & Kashmir and Chandigarh) will have a separate network of its own. The programs will be originated by the station in the capital city of each state which will be relayed by all other stations in that particular state. 

Now many AIR stations broadcast their own programs with occasional relays from New Delhi / State capital etc. This system will end on 31 Dec 2020.

There will also be nine new regional channels for entertainment, in addition to the Vividh Bharati Service. 

It may be noted that this system is already followed by Doordarshan TV.

New Release: Broadcasting in Russian Handbook now available

 

The 29th edition of the Broadcasting in Russian Handbook, published by the St. Petersburg DX Club, has recently been released. 

The handbook is the most comprehensive guide to broadcasts in Russian on long, medium, and short waves. The Air Broadcasting section features all radio stations transmitting in Russian at present, both from Russia and abroad, which could be received in Russia, CIS, and surrounding countries

(total 46 stations from 29 countries and territories of the world).

Station listings include frequency and program schedules, transmitter location and power, target areas, postal addresses, phone/fax numbers, web sites, social network pages, e-mail addresses as well as QSL policy info.

The schedules are generally valid until 27 March 2021 (during the B-20 broadcasting season).

The Internet Broadcasting section contains information on Internet broadcasting of 16 stations of 14 countries and territories of the world.

The Handbook is exclusively in Russian and distributed as a hardcopy only.

Voice of Mongolia - missing in action ?

 

Since the beginning of the B20 Winter season, commencing on October 24, 2020, there have been no reports or observations, of Voice of Mongolia broadcasting on 12084.8 or 12014.8 kHz.

It is unknown if this is due to transmitter issues, or the station has ceased airing on shortwave. If active, the station should be broadcasting on the following schedule. Your comments and observations are welcomed at w4gvh@frontier.com

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 November - 06 December 2020

Solar activity reached low levels this week due to C-class flare activity. A total of ten C-class flares were observed this period.

Region 2786 (S17, L=343, class/area=Cko/1000 on 25 Nov) produced three C1 flares, Region 2787 (N30, L=303, class/area=Axx/10 on 30 Nov) produced one C1 flare, and Region 2790 (S22, L=252,

class/area=Hsx/110 on 03 Dec) produced six C-class flares. The largest event of the period was a C3/Sf from Region 2790 at 01/0427 UTC. 

Multiple CMEs associated with flare activity and filament eruptions, predominately off the east limb, were observed this week, however, none were Earth-directed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux became enhanced on 30 Nov following a CME off the NE limb on 26 Nov, and remained enhanced through 05 Dec. The greater than 10 Mev proton flux reached a peak of 6.5 pfu at 01/0655

UTC. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 02-03 Dec, with normal to moderate flux levels observed throughout the remainder of the summary period. 

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled on 30 Nov, and quiet on 01-06 Dec, under a nominal solar wind regime. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 December - 02 January 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 20-26 and 29-30 Dec. Normal to moderate levels are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is anticipated to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 19 Dec, with active levels likely on 18 and 24 Dec, due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the

remainder of the outlook period.
