Radio Netherlands program preview Nov 11-17

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 11 NOVEMBER
*** Weekend Connection ***
Every Saturday, the Newsline team brings you Weekend Connection, with thought-provoking reports on the issues making headlines in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond. It's a lively mix of local colour and "the big picture". One week you might hear how Dutch farmers are doing their part to combat bird flu, the next week it's about the worldwide attempt to punish crimes
against humanity. Big or small, Weekend Connection covers it all! Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1000 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1200 (Eastern N America), 1400 & 1530 (South Asia), 1800, 1930 & 2030 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0500 (Western N America)

*** Vox Humana ***
"Russian Dreams, Dutch lives"
Nadja and Lusja were both born in Russian villages and during the Second World War; they were amongst the millions of Russians who were taken to Germany to become forced labourers. There they met the Dutch men who brought them back to an unwelcoming Holland as post-war brides and here they would live for decades, caught between two worlds and rejected by both.
And you can hear the story of two Russian Dutch women in Vox Humana this week. SUNDAY 12 NOVEMBER
*** Amsterdam Forum ***
A common western stereotype of Muslim women is that they are oppressed in terms of dress and general rights. Take the ongoing debate in Europe about the wearing of the veil by Muslim women. Critics say it hinders integration, while others view is as a symbol of oppression. But is this true? Does the religious choice of Muslim women really hinder integration? Or it is time to stop seeing Muslim women as 'victims' of their religion? Have your say on the topic at www.radionetherlands.nl/features/amsterdamforum/. Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1004 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1204 (Eastern N America), 1504 (South Asia), 1804 & 2004 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0500 (Western N America)

In the great swathes of the Western Australian wheatbelt something has been awakened. A generation ago, 1000 acres of land was cleared a day making the region the country's breadbasket. Today patches of land are balding, agriculture is suffering, and inland lakes are turning to salt. The agriculture practiced here is industrialized and modern but farmers are facing a range of problems. And one of the most serious of them is the salination of the land.
