Radio Netherlands program guide Jan 20 - 26

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.
SATURDAY 20 JANUARY
*** Weekend Connection ***
Every Saturday, the Newsline team brings you Weekend Connection, with thought-provoking reports on the issues making headlines in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.
It's a lively mix of local colour and "the big picture". One week you might hear how Dutch farmers are doing their part to combat bird flu, the next week it's about the worldwide attempt to punish crimes against humanity. Big or small, Weekend Connection covers it all!

*** Vox Humana ***
"Indian Courtesans: Concubines, Never Queens"
The English word courtesan is loaded with sexual meaning: in its crudest terms it means a performing prostitute. In the case of the baijis of India, however, the highest strata of these women were superb artists who had trained for years, sometimes decades, under the greatest teachers. They performed for kings and other powerful men; sometimes they became their mistresses.
In preparation for our special week of programs focusing on India today, Dheera Sujan investigates a cultural treasure of India's past in "Indian Courtesans: Concubines, Never Queens".
Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1027 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1227 (Eastern N America), 1430 (South Asia), 1827 & 2000 (Africa), 0027 (Eastern N America), 0127 (Central N America), 0527 (Western N America)

SUNDAY 21 JANUARY
*** Amsterdam Forum ***
"Civilisation is in imminent danger and has to use nuclear - the one safe, available, energy source - now, or suffer the pain soon to be inflicted by our outraged planet." Dr James Lovelock, a leading environmental scientist, believes human-induced climate change is bringing Earth to the edge of disaster.
But the nature of Lovelock's claims - or rather his proposed solution - has divided opinions even among those who are worried about global warming. He says the only way forward if we want to save the planet is to use nuclear power. Do you agree - Is nuclear energy a solution to climate change? Or are the fears about nuclear power justified?
Have your say on the topic at

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to lose your sight or your hearing? What would you choose if you had to make a choice between them?
For more than half a million people in India, there is no choice. They are deaf and blind and without support their world can be an isolated one of darkness and silence.
