"After the Shot"

On the night of April 14th 1865, at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Twelve days later, Booth himself was shot dead. Conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination flourished. And 140 years later, for both historians and ordinary people, they are still very much alive.

This programme in the Global Perspective 2007 series tries to unravel why people believe the truth - and a myriad of legends - about the assassination of a great American president.

Shaping a New Africa: Liberal Democracy

All over Africa, people want democracy. But the forces that have shaped and obstructed democratic development have often been larger than any individual country. Political Scientist Tukumbi Lumumba Kasongo outlines the history of liberal democracy in Africa from independence, through the Cold War and up to the present day and the war on terror.

Looking specifically at Algeria, Ghana and Congo-Brazzaville, he analyses the elements that are needed for democracy to take root in African countries. Roel van Meijenfeldt, Executive Director of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, adds his views on the ways European countries can help support the development of democracy in Africa, drawing
on his own extensive experience. Have your say on the topic at

"Black Face, White Heart"

This week's documentary is the untold story of the 3,000 Belanda Hitam - or Black Dutchmen. They were recruited in West Africa in the 19th century to serve in the Dutch East Indies colonial army. The soldiers were given Dutch nationality, with many of the privileges of their colonial masters.

After Indonesia's independence, these Black Dutchmen then sailed off to Holland, the homeland they had never seen. In "Black Face, White Heart", Hélène Michaud tells the fascinating stories of these former slaves.
