Radio Netherlands program guide May 12-18

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 12 MAY

*** Weekend Connection ***

Every Saturday, the Newsline team brings you Weekend Connection, with thought-provoking reports on the issues making headlines in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.

It's a lively mix of local colour and "the big picture". One week you might hear how Dutch farmers are doing their part to combat bird flu, the next week it's about the worldwide attempt to punish crimes against humanity. Big or small, Weekend Connection covers it all!

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1000 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1100 (Eastern N America), 1400 & 1530 (South Asia), 1800, 1930 & 2030 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0400 (Western N America)

*** Vox Humana ***

"Imagining Farm Machinery"

Have you ever read a book in which the author seemed to be describing precise details from your own past? That's what happened to producer David Swatling when he read a work by American writer Dale Peck.

An upstate New York dairy farm in the late 1950's provides a landscape where memory and family history intersect with fiction and farm machinery. Where do the roots of our imagination lie buried? How much is passed on from father to son? And by retelling family stories is it possible to recover "what we lost"?

"Imagining Farm Machinery" on Vox Humana.

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1027 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1127 (Eastern N America), 1430 (South Asia), 1827 & 2000 (Africa), 0027 (Eastern N America), 0127 (Central N America), 0427 (Western N America)
Repeated: Sun 1400 (South Asia), Sun 1900 (N America, Africa)

SUNDAY 13 MAY

*** Amsterdam Forum ***

Would you fight for your country? That's the question we're asking this week, a full decade since the Netherlands stopped asking its young men to do military service.

Conscription seems to be in decline elsewhere in the world too, although it's still a part of society in Germany, Scandinavia, and various countries outside Europe.

So is patriotism itself in decline - or could conscription one day make a comeback? Flying the flag, or not, on this week's Amsterdam Forum - Radio Netherlands' interactive panel discussion programme.

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1000 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1100 (Eastern N America), 1500 (South Asia), 1800 & 2000 (Africa), 0000 (Eastern N America), 0100 (Central N America), 0400 (Western N America)

*** The Research File ***

It seems that if any part of your body stops working properly, there's a man-made device that can assist. Artificial hips, hearts, limbs and lungs have become almost commonplace. But what are the challenges in developing new and improved organs? Where is it all leading? And should there be any limits on 'spare-parts' for people?

In another chance to hear the special edition of the Research File, we meet the man who began it all and whose work has helped save the lives of 30 million people over the past 60 years. As the recognition of the life and work of this remarkable doctor gains momentum, we revisit the past, examine current research and explore the future of artificial body parts.

Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 1027 (Asia/Far East/Pacific), 1127 (Eastern N America), 1430 (South Asia), 1827 & 2000 (Africa), 0027 (Eastern N America), 0127 (Central N America), 0427 (Western N America)

It's tough times for bees and their keepers in France. And we go to the French village where the streets have no names.
