Africa in Progress
Inspiring round-table discussions with guest speakers and in-depth interviews give listeners food for thought.

This week: Africa deserves healthy mothers - Millennium Development Goal number 5

In Africa, the goal to reduce the number of maternal deaths by 75 percent by 2015 is unlikely to be reached. A woman in sub-Saharan Africa has a one in 16 chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth. In a developing country, the risk is one in 4,000.

Although economic growth is picking up on the African continent, maternal mortality has actually increased in most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to Kenyan women’s rights activist Caroline Tati, this is because governments give a higher priority to other sectors, and because health expenditures do not reach the poorer women who need maternal health care the most.

"Not one single mother should die while giving life," says our guest Caroline Tati.

First airing: Monday 18:00 UTC
