Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedule

Hello friends,
Last weekend’s experiment with the five 2000-Hz-wide Olivia modes was interesting and fun. It appeared that Olivia 64-2000, 32-2000, and 16-2000 all performed well, even in difficult reception condition. It was not until Olivia 8-2000 and, more so, 4-2000 that errors were seen.

At about 75 words per minute, Olivia 16-2000 might be a good mode for Shortwave Radiogram, except that it is only about 70% as fast as MFSK32 and, unlike MFSK32, it cannot be used to transmit images.

If you have recordings of your Olivia mode reception, especially if your decode was less than 100%, try decoding from your recording after adjusting the integration period upward (Op Mode > Olivia > Custom). Read about the integration period here and here, and note that the default integration period changes as the number of tones changes. Large integration periods can be a problem in amateur radio QSOs, because of the lag time between transmit and receive, but they are less of a problem in a broadcast situation. If you do not have a recording, you can use Scott’s video, with some errors seen from the Olivia 8-2000 and 4-2000 modes.

This weekend Shortwave Radiogram will be all MFSK32. There are two interesting stories about North Korea, and one about finding a lost

NASA satellite. Each of these has an image, and there is a bonus images of Wednesday’s “super blue blood moon.”

The broadcast Sunday at 2330 UTC coincides with the kickoff of Super Bowl LII. If ratings for the big game are down this year, it will be due to competition from Shortwave Radiogram.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 33, 3-5 February 2018, all in MFSK32 centered on 1500 Hz:

  1:31  Program preview
2:38  North Korea steps up mobile phone detection*
11:08  White House criticizes NBC reports from North Korea*
17:48  Canadian radio amateur finds lost NASA satellite*
