Radio Netherlands program guide July 14-20

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 14 JULY

*** The State We're In ***

This week The State We're In looks at Homeland: lost, found, taken and changed beyond all recognition.

So we meet the people of the Pacific Island of Diego Garcia, who were forcibly removed from their homeland to make way for an American military base.

Marijke van der Meer laments a Dutch landscape so industrialized that it no longer feels like home.

And for commentator Jaehoon Ahn, a simple cup of Korean soil takes on enormous meaning after his immigrant father is buried in California.

Plus does pop music really have the power to change people's minds? We ask a Dutch-Moroccan rapper who claims to be "Holland's worst nightmare", if he's really all that bad.

And a moderate Muslim publicist scores a number one hit with an anti-Terrorist message in Pakistan. It's called This is Not Us.

And that's what's on The State We're In.

"Durga's Court"

At the recent 2007 New York Festivals, Dheera Sujan was awarded a Bronze Medal by the United Nations Deptartment of Public Information for her documentary "Durga's Court: Social Justice at Work in India". It was originally broadcast in September 2006.

In a small Indian village not far from the Bangladeshi border, people come to Shabnam Ramaswamy's court. It's a forum for the poor, the disenfranchised, the illiterate; those who have neither the money nor the influence to grease the wheels of the official system of justice in the country. Sitting in judgment like Durga, the ten-armed Hindu goddess of vengeance, Shabnam wields a power which is a mystery to those who stand before her.

*** The Research File ***

It's a retrospective Research File this time, re-visiting rewards for scientific research and communication. Do science prizes matter personally and professionally? I get some answers from Nobel, Spinoza and Descartes prize winners.

And a historical view of science and Islam - in both the recent and mediaeval past. Was Cleopatra more than just a sexpot queen? Islamic scholars in mediaeval times certainly thought so, according to studies of old texts. And how can Islam and science be reconciled now? We bring a historical perspective.

So join me, for the Research File.
