Australian Trio Win DAB+ Acclaim

8.21.2007

Collaboration between transmission-services provider Broadcast Australia, industry body Commercial Radio Australia and public-service broadcaster Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC) has earned the three top industry honors.
The three organizations won the “Outstanding Contribution to World Standards” award at the Australian Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) exhibition, held mid-July in Sydney, New South Wales, for their testing of the new DAB+ standard.

According to Clive Morton, Broadcast Australia broadcast services director, the cooperation was “instrumental” in specifying and testing the new audio compression technology now included in the global DAB standard.

“The collaboration between Commercial Radio Australia, the ABC and Broadcast Australia was highly significant in that it enabled us to facilitate the optimum solution for Australian radio broadcasters. Our joint efforts have helped to usher in a new generation of DAB+ in time for the mainstream roll-out of digital radio in this country, which commences on 1 January 2009,” said Joan Warner, chief executive of Commercial Radio Australia.
