Radio Australia to resume broadcast to Burma

In solidarity: Radio Australia to resume broadcast to Burma

August 12, 2009 .
Radio Australia will again begin broadcasting to Burma in what the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, called a ''gesture of solidarity'' with the pro democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, in the wake of her conviction yesterday.

Mr Rudd also hinted at stronger sanctions.

''It is time for change in Burma, time for the military regime to deliver to the people of Burma the basic right of freedom of political association,'' Mr Rudd said.

''The Australian Government is deeply concerned by the Burmese regime's disregard for the democratic aspirations of its people and its disrespect for their human rights. We will continue our strong efforts with other members of the international community, including the United Nations, to deliver the change which the Burmese so much deserve.''
