Countdown to Field Day 2012

Don't forget to mark Saturday, June 23rd on your DX calendar. Amateur radio operators in the U.S. and Canada will be on the air to celebrate Field Day, a 24 hour period of making as many radio contacts as possible. The club field day operations are usually excellent verifiers. Many shortwave listeners work all 50 states and Canadian provinces during an ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Field Day weekend. Note the call sign, frequency, time, date and who they worked, and the reception quality description. Include a self-addressed-stamped-envelope with your details. Searchable calls for postal address info should go to www.qrz.com . Consult the ARRL website at www.arrl.org for upcoming news and rules about Amateur Radio Field Day.

Tens of thousands of Amateur Radio operators will be firing up portable radio stations from unexpected locations this weekend for ARRL Field Day. On June 23-24, over 35,000 hams are expected to operate from parks, malls, schools and. yes, fields, around the country.

Field Day is the climax of the week-long Amateur Radio Week sponsored by the ARRL. As of June 19, 21 states have issued proclamations thanking and supporting the hams for their community service work, and more are expected to do so.

Looking for a Field Day location? Check out the Field Day locator.

Information for media and the general public is at www.arrl.org/2012FieldDay .

Urban Radio from New Caledonia

Join us from Monday, June 25 2012 to explore the world of breakfast radio on several of the few local FM radio stations in Noumea on the Mailbox program from Radio New Zealand International.

With a population of some 165,000, Noumea is one of the most European and largest urban areas in the Pacific islands.

This is not just the Pacific of golden beaches, swaying palm trees and the gentle roar of the distant surf. This is also high population density, traffic jams, shopping malls, and six radio stations competing for listeners in a tense political atmosphere.

You can listen directly via shortwave radio from RNZI in New Zealand, or audio on demand [for the following month] with full details of current broadcast frequencies [both DRM and analog] and times possible for your area as well as audio downloads at www.rnzi.com .

We'll take you to the home of breakfast radio personalities Gege at Oceane FM, Robert Canal at Radio Rhythme Bleu, and JB at NRJ.... as well as introduce you to Radio Djiido, Nouvelle Caledonie Premiere and Radio O.... and tell you how you can join them all for breakfast!

New Caledonia has blocked the airwaves to new stations for many years, and of these six, two are owned by the French government, one is part of a French commercial network, one has close connections with another French network, and just one fully serves the local Kanak people.

Local listeners are denied the wide range of stations, formats and viewpoints found on the mainland, but this strange situation reflects local politics as New Caledonia struggles to find a way forward that satisfies those for and against independence from France.

Each of the stations featured has a well designed website, usually a good Facebook page, and wonderful coverage maps to download and print as souvenirs of your visit to Noumea, the Riviera of the South Pacific.

So join us from Monday, June 25 2012 as we enjoy breakfast with the radio DJ's from Noumea, New Caledonia on the Mailbox program from Radio New Zealand International [www.rnzi.com].

You can also use our Pacific Asian Listener and Pacific Traveller Radio Guides at our global website www.radioheritage.com . Use our Google Search to find more features about broadcasting in New Caledonia.

Radio Heritage Foundation is a registered non-profit organization connecting radio, popular culture, history and heritage with useful radio guides and features for free community use at www.radioheritage.com .

Mid-winter special broadcast set for British Antarctic Survey

Welcome to mid-winter day in Antarctica ! Antarctic winterers from over 30 nations will celebrate the shortest day in Antarctica (June 20) after which the days start to slowly get longer and lighter. For many winterers, this will come as a relief as they have endured freezing temperatures as cold as −30°C, extremely high winds and nearly permanent darkness as the Sun has not risen from the horizon since mid May.

Traditional greetings and photographs are being shared between the research stations on the frozen continent and British Antarctic Survey staff will mark the day by exchanging handmade presents with their fellow winterers. Midwinter’s Day is the equivalent of Christmas Day for many as Christmas is typically just another working day during the very short summer season.

To commemorate this special event there will be a British Antarctic Survey Special to the staff. The broadcast day has not been confirmed, but is scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (June 20-22, 2012) as;

2130-2200 UTC on 5950 SKN 300 kW / 195 deg
2130-2200 UTC on 7360 ASC 250 kW / 207 deg
2130-2200 UTC on 9850 SKN 250 kW / 195 deg
(sked via DX Re Mix 736)

Reception via Global Tuner may assist those unable to hear any of these broadcast. For more information on Global Tunes, consult www.globaltuners.com

Egypt's Political Future in Question Again

Both candidates have claimed victory in the Egyptian presidential run-off. Muslim Brotherhood supporters, at this writing, are celebrating in Tahrir Square. The opposition, Ahmed Shafiq's campaign, said he was ahead "beyond all doubt," and have accused the Brotherhood of trying to create a "fait accompli."

Official election results are not due until Thursday. Complete story at http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/middle-east-live/2012/jun/18/egypt-election-muslim-brotherhood-claims-victory-live?newsfeed=true

Radio Netherlands Program Preview, June 15-21

We regret to inform you that the English service of Radio Netherlands Worldwide will close on 29 June 2012. Production of this What's on newsletter will cease on the same date.

The measures are a result of budget cuts imposed by the Dutch government and a concomitant change in focus. Providing the world with a realistic image of the Netherlands will no longer be one of our statutory duties.

On 29 June we will broadcast a radio show looking back at the past decades of Radio Netherlands Worldwide. Please check our website for updates on our final day. There may be a surprise or two...

The RNW team

The State We're In
Jonathan Groubert and his team look at current events from an unexpected perspective.

This week: The last word

A journalist from Sri Lanka keeps telling the truth to power the way her assassinated husband did. A man in Eastern Uganda tells traditional stories to undo colonialist history. And a librarian from Jakarta helps children in disaster areas by telling them folk tales.

First airing: Saturday 02:00 UTC

Earth Beat
Marnie Chesterton and her team look at the footprint we’re leaving on our planet.

This week: Things that come full circle

How an international explorer found the glamour of travelling in his own backyard, and a man’s Harley, lost in the Japanese tsunami of 2011, is found – on the other side of the Pacific.

First airing: Friday 03:00 UTC

South Asia Wired
Stories from South Asia.

This week:

One group of sisters discuses how a simple piece of cloth can cause a vibrant debate in the Maldives. In a small Indian village we find another tradition only less conservative, here the men are pimps and the women are all prostitutes. We talked to one woman who decided to quit the trade.

(There'll be a new edition of the programme on Thursday 21 June)

First airing: Thursday 10:00 UTC

Bridges With Africa
We're giving the microphone to Diaspora groups in Europe and are linking up with stations in Africa.

This week:

In Nigeria Christian youths retaliate against bomb attacks by Muslims, as clergymen turn a blind eye. The Dutch-Nigerian cartoonist tapping into nostalgia for inspiration.
Provocative music by South African vocalist Cata Pirata and her band Skip and Die.

First airing: Friday 00:00 UTC

Africa in Progress
Inspiring round-table discussions with guest speakers and in-depth interviews give listeners food for thought.

This week:

Officially, there’s only one pastor with HIV in Zimbabwe. Reverend Maxwell Kapachawo feels that more religious leaders should be courageous and disclose their status as he did, because of their position in society.

This he says would help improve the lives of others living with HIV. But the clergymen are afraid to speak openly.

First airing: Monday 18:00 UTC

Commonwealth Story
A selection of winning stories chosen from the large number of entries for the 2010 Commonwealth Short Story Competition.

This week: Judgement day - by Farah Ghuznavi (Bangladesh). A sci-fi story of a marriage.

First airing: Tuesday 01:50 UTC

Global Perspective
Who says I can’t… is the motto of this year’s collaboration of international broadcasters, offering stories of defiance and perseverance.

This week: Who says I can’t reject tradition?

Lesego Mangwanyane of SAFM radio in Johannesburg explores the role of sangomas, traditional healers in contemporary South African life, and wonders anxiously if she herself is destined to be one.

First airing: Monday 17:30 UTC

European Jazz Stage
Performances from the continent’s hottest clubs, concert halls and festivals, including the spectacular North Sea Jazz Festival. The show is hosted by Benjamin Herman.

This week:

An all-exclusive three-way tour through the Dutch capital. Both drummer Jeff 'Tain' Watts Trio and New York singer Gretchen Parlato are at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. And the Artvark Saxophone Quartet is blowing out the stars at the Milky Way.

Update on Radio Netherlands countdown to close of English service

A reminder to our readers as July 1 nears and the close of Radio Netherlands English service.

15 June We're also on air to Europe on 29 June! RNW's distribution department has arranged this frequency for you:

1900 UTC until 2057 UTC - 6065 kHz from Wertachtal

This will allow listeners in a large area of Europe to share the last two hours of RNW English on air.

DXers that have enjoyed Radio Netherlands for many years, are saddened, though not completely surprised at the station's recent announcement. Radio Netherlands has been a favorite of mine, and I will miss their English service and excellent programming greatly.
Gayle VH

Dear Readers,

We're very sorry to inform you that the English service of Radio Netherlands Worldwide will be closing at the end of this month. As a result, this website will see some changes.

From 1 July 2012 there will no longer be a daily review of the Dutch papers. Our coverage of Dutch news stories will also cease. And, since RNW's English webstream will end on 29 June, there will be no more Listening Guide.

However, we will continue to provide articles online relating to our new brief: promoting free speech in areas where people are not free to gather information or to form and express independent opinions.

Why?
The measures are a result of steep budget cuts imposed by the Dutch government and a concomitant change in focus. Providing the world with a realistic image of the Netherlands, as we have proudly done since 1947, will no longer be one of our statutory duties.

The last radio show
On 29 June we will broadcast a radio show looking back at the past decades of Radio Netherlands Worldwide. Have you got a memory to share? Please let us know, at the usual address, mailto:letters@rnw.nl. We'd love to hear from you.

Updates
Please keep checking this site for updates on our final day. There may be a surprise or two...

And, perhaps most importantly, thank you - for listening, reading, and riding this bumpy road with us over the years and through the recent, difficult times.
The RNW English team

Radio Canada International nears final days on shortwave

On April 4, 2012 an approximate 80% budget cut to the International service from $12.3 million a year to $2.3 million a year was announced by RCI Director Hélène Parent. In the 2012 federal budget, a 10% funding reduction was announced for the domestic broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada. Radio-Canada subsequently translated this to an 80% reduction to the International service under its financial and managerial control.

These changes will effectively end broadcasting by RCI via shortwave and satellite. RCI News service (as a separate news service from the CBC-SCR derived news) will end, and the Brazilian and Russian sections will be cut.

All shortwave transmissions (including those from the Sackville Relay station), satellite, and all broadcast programming will end on June 24.

China Radio International, an important user of RCI Sackville will have to find a new shortwave relay site.

A skeleton remainder will provide some limited online services in five languages, including Spanish, Arabic, French, English, and Mandarin.

The last Radio Canada International shortwave transmission, will be on Sunday, June 24 at 2329 UTC, RCI Portuguese 13760 and RCI Spanish 11990 15455 kHz. {CEST Monday June 25 at 0129 hrs}

Listening with Lizzie
British Commonwealth on the Air 1952-53
Celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of
Queen Elizabeth II 1952-2012
_______________________________________

"Listening with Lizzie" is the new feature celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II 1952-2012 recently released at www.radioheritage.com by the Radio Heritage Foundation.

This is a nostalgic review of the radio broadcasting scene across the then British Commonwealth sixty years ago, when places such as British Honduras, British Somaliland, Aden, Zanzibar, Gold Coast, Northern Rhodesia and many other colonies and territories were contributing to the 'British" world of radio.

You'll enjoy classic ephemera from such stations as the Central African Broadcasting Station, Cable & Wireless in the Kenya Colony, the Near East Arab Broadcasting Station from Cyprus, the Commercial Service of Radio Ceylon, Radio Malaya from Singapore, Radio ZBP Pitcairn Island, Radio Jamaica ZQI and many others.

"Let's visit the British Commonwealth as the young Queen Elizabeth II would have found it, and imagine we're listening in to the sounds of a radio magically sweeping across the dial and across the world, and picking up the sounds of her realm in 1952-53."

The feature covers Great Britain, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas, and gives a unique insight into how broadcasting was emerging at different levels across many parts of the globe in this first decade after the end of the conflicts of World War II.

"Listening with Lizzie" British Commonwealth on the Air is now available at www.radioheritage.com and is one of a growing number of new Popular Culture features produced by the Radio Heritage Foundation.

If you enjoyed the coverage of the Jubilee celebrations recently, you'll also enjoy this special celebratory feature.

Radio Heritage Foundation is a registered non-profit connecting radio, popular culture, history and heritage at www.radioheritage.com . Radio guides and hundreds of features are available for free to the global community.
