The World's Busiest Airport in Wisconsin

The World’s Busiest Airport: AWR Was There!
The entries in the internet encyclopedia Wikipedia inform us that the worlds busiest airport in regular operation is the Hartsfield Airport, located some seven miles south of Atlanta Georgia.  Each year Hartsfield processes 900,000 aircraft traffic movements, landings and takeoffs.  This is an average of 17,000 traffic movements each week.

However, there is another airport in the United States that processes nearly 50% more traffic movements, landings and takeoffs, at a total of 25,000 traffic movements in a week, though for only one week each year.  This airplane phenomenon is played out each year in July or August at the Wittman Regional Airport, just two miles south of Oshkosh, a lakeside city in Wisconsin.
The name Oshkosh means claw in the tribal Menominee language, and it was the name of a notable chief in the early days of European settlement.  Fur traders established the first European settlement, though the timber trade spurred subsequent development.  At one stage, Oshkosh was known as the Sawdust Capital of the World, with 62 lumber mills in the area.  The city was incorporated in 1853, and the population these days is around 70,000.
Oshkosh is home to three divers tourist attractions:-
                        * The Aviation museum with 250 historic airplanes and five aviation cinemas
                        * The Creation Museum with ¾ million square feet of walk through exhibits
                        * The Historic Adventist Village with 3 blocks of historic buildings and artifacts

Oshkosh is best known for its Annual Air Show.  This event is staged every summer around the end of July and the beginning of August, and it draws half a million visitors from as many as seventy different countries.  Thousands of people are accommodated in neat rows of tents on the enlarged property measuring nearly 2¼ square miles, and besides each tent is a parked airplane, not a motor car.  There are some 800 commercial exhibits on display for the weeklong event.
For this years event just a few weeks back, nearly one thousand media personnel came in from countries on five different continents to provide news reports for back home newspapers and radio & TV stations.  The annual air show also operates its own FM radio station in order to provide news and information to the massive number of attendees.
The airport supervises three runways and while in operation for the annual air show, there is one departure or one landing every ten seconds, the worlds busiest.  During this years air show, 2,500 participants co-operated in the construction of a Zenith Cruzer airplane which was flown for the first time on the last day of the show.
A few days after the end of the Annual Air Show this year, this same property was taken over for a major international youth festival.  This event ran for almost a week, running from August 11 through 15, and it attracted a total attendance of more than 50,000 young people from fifty different countries.
These Camporee events are staged for young people known as Pathfinders and this years Camporee was planned under the name Forever Faithful International Camporee.  These Camporees are organized by the Youth Department of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination and they are for young people in the age bracket from 10 - 15 years, together with family members and church leaders; they are staged every five years.
The Pathfinder organization is very similar to Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.  It began in 1907 and today there are 2 million Pathfinders in 90,000 Pathfinder Clubs in 150 countries worldwide.  The huge Air Show property at Oshkosh is one of the few available venues in the United States that is large enough to accommodate the influx of attendees with all of the events and activities.
A large number of the youthful attendees participated in community events in Oshkosh, and they  also entered into many different contests and events in the Camporee itself.  Guided drones were in use for the monitoring of motor traffic, and for aerial photography.  A special one thousand piece jig saw puzzle featuring the Camporee was made available at this years event.
Local media, radio TV & newspaper, provided ample coverage of the Pathfinder Camporee, and the Camporee administration provided a daily newspaper in color.  International news from the Camporee via satellite and TV was provided by the Hope Channel from Silver Spring in Maryland on the edge of Washington DC and by 3ABN TV from Illinois with its two mobile vans.  The Camporee at Oshkosh also operated its own local FM station, Pathfinder Radio, on 89.4 MHz in order to provide information and news to attendees.
Among the many display booths was one that gave an overview of the activities of Adventist World Radio.  Yes, AWR was there!  A special issue of the youth magazine, Guide, was dedicated entirely to the work and results of AWR ministry, and display boards showed the widespread outreach statistics of AWR programming.  The AWR booth was under the direction of Shelley Freesland, who is
Communication Director at the AWR headquarters in suburban Washington DC.

            Among the interesting AWR statistics:-
On the air worldwide in nearly 100 languages from 10 shortwave transmitter sites
Program production in 70 affiliated studios on all continents
1500 FM stations in Russia carry AWR programming
Nationwide coverage throughout India on FM and other local media
On the air to Asia and the Pacific from 5 shortwave transmitters on the island of Guam
The next Pathfinder Camporee is scheduled for Oshkosh again, during the summer of the year 2019.

WRMI to Expand Family Radio Broadcasts

NEWS RELEASE - September 24, 2014

WRMI to Expand Family Radio Broadcasts

As of UTC October 1, WRMI in Okeechobee, Florida will add three hours per day of programming from Family Radio in Asian languages.  This is in addition to the two hours per day of Spanish-language programming from Family Radio that WRMI already broadcasts.  The new broadcasts will be in Chinese, Japanese and Hindi.

"This will be a short-term experiment," explained WRMI General Manager Jeff White.  "But if results are good, it could be extended.  The idea is to see how well these broadcasts can be received by listeners in China, Japan and India.  These are very distant target areas from Okeechobee, but recent listener reports indicate that our signal is audible in much of Asia at certain times and frequencies.  If that is confirmed, we may be able to begin broadcasts of other programs to these Asian audiences.¨

The schedule for the Family Radio broadcasts via WRMI as of UTC October 1, 2014 will be as follows:

1000-1100 UTC daily on 7570 kHz in Japanese
1100-1200 UTC daily on 7570 kHz in Chinese
2300-0000 UTC daily on 5950 kHz in Spanish
0000-0100 UTC daily on 5950 kHz in Spanish
0100-0200 UTC daily on 15770 kHz in Hindi

The Japanese- and Chinese-language programs are on a beam to western North America, but will also be intended for listeners in Japan and China.  The Hindi-language program is on a beam to Europe and the Middle East, but will also be intended for listeners in India.  The two Spanish-language hours are two different programs.

Radio Miami International acquired the Okeechobee transmission facility from Family Radio in December 2013, when the call letters were changed from WYFR to WRMI.  As part of the agreement, WRMI has been broadcasting two hours per day of Family Radio's Spanish programming to the Caribbean, Central and South America.

Reports for the new Japanese, Chinese and Hindi programs will be greatly appreciated, especially from listeners in Asia. They may be sent to info@wrmi.net.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 - 28 September 2014

Solar activity increased to high levels this week with an M5/2b flare at 28/0258 UTC from Region 2173 (S17, L=250, class/area=Dac/160 on 28 Sep). Dimming was evident in SDO/AIA 193
imagery across the disk to the SW in conjunction with the flare. Associated with the event were weak multi-spectral radio emissions including a 10cm Burst (220 sfu), a Type II Sweep (638 km/s shock
velocity) and a weak, short-lived Type IV Sweep. Limited LASCO depicted a narrow coronal mass ejection (CME) lifting off the SSW limb, not judged to be Earth-directed. An M1/Sf flare was also
observed at 28/1733 UTC from Region 2173, accompanied by weak multi-spectral radio emissions.

Region 2173 was part of a large group of complex active regions in the southern hemisphere, including Regions 2172 (S11, L=239, class/area=Ekc/570 on 23 Sep) and 2171 (S10, L=264,
class/area=Eai/160 on 21 Sep). Both Region 2173 and 2172 had developed beta-gamma magnetic configurations by the end of the week. Region 2172 produced an M2/2b flare on 23/2316 UTC and several C-class flares throughout the period. The M-flare was associated with 250 sfu Tenflare along with Type II (est. speed 652 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps. A CME was subsequently observed at 23/2348 UTC on the east limb in Lasco C2 imagery. The next day, the same region produced a C7/1n flare 24/1750 UTC with an associated 190 sfu Tenflare and a Type IV radio sweep. No CME was correlated with this event. Activity from Region 2171 was limited to a single C-class flare on 25 Sep.

Complex regions were present in the Northern Hemisphere as well. Region 2175 (N16, L=262, class/area=Dkc/390 on 28 Sep) emerged on the disk on 25 Sep and had developed a beta-gamma-delta magnetic configuration by the 26th. It continued to grow rapidly through the remainder of the week while maintaining its complex magnetic characteristics. The region, however, was only responsible for C-class activity. Region 2177 (N12, L=168, class/area=Eai/120 on 28 Sep) developed a beta-gamma configuration on 28 Sep, but only produced a few C-class flares.

The remaining M-class flare (M1) occurred on 27/0837 as Region 2178 (S03, L=151, class/area=Cao/50) rounded the east limb. The remaining regions on the disk were generally stable and no significant filament eruptions were observed.

No proton events meeting alert criteria were observed at geosynchronous orbit, however, there was a slight elevation in 10 MeV protons on 22 Sep, reaching a peak flux of 2 pfu at 1300 UTC.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached moderate levels on 22-25 Sep, and high levels on 26-28 Sep.

The geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels, with minor to severe storm periods observed at high latitudes. The week began with a solar sector boundary crossing (negative to
positive) early on 22 Sep. This heralded the arrival of a positive polarity coronal hole high speed stream and disturbed geomagnetic conditions. Solar wind speed was predominantly in the 400 km/s to 470 km/s range with total field ranging from 3 nT to 8 nT. From 22-23 September, quiet to unsettled conditions were observed. By 24 September, Bz had become mostly negative and the day was characterized by predominantly active conditions. Minor to major storm periods were observed at high latitudes, and a single severe storm period was recorded. The agitated conditions relented somewhat on 25-26 September, when mostly quiet to unsettled conditions were observed. However, Major storm periods were still being recorded at high latitudes on the 26th. September 27th began with active conditions, but eventually subsided to quiet to unsettled levels by the 28th as the solar wind speed slackened slightly and the magnetic field relaxed.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 29 September - 25 October 2014

Solar activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) with a slight chance for X-class flaring (R3-Strong or greater) for the forecast period (29 Sep-25 Oct) due to potential significant flare activity from Regions 2172, 2173, and 2175 as well as the return of old Regions 2157 (S15, L=099) and 2158 (N16, L=089) on 29 and 30 Sep, respectively.

A slight chance for a greater than 10 MeV proton event (S1-Minor and above) exists for the forecast period (29 Sep-25 Oct) due to potential significant flare activity from Regions 2172, 2173, and
2175 as well as the return of old Regions 2157 and 2158.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels possible from 29 Sep-02 Oct and again on 22-25 Oct due to coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels from 29 Sep-02 Oct, 15, 17,19-20 and 25 Oct. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 16 and 21-24 Oct due to CH HSS
activity.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 15 - 21 September 2014

Solar activity ranged from low to moderate levels during the period. Low levels were reached on 15-17 September and again on 19-21 September with moderate activity observed on 18 September. A
majority of the early C-class activity was observed from Regions 2158 (N16, L=087, class/area Dkc/440 on 11 Sep) and 2164 (S14, L=049, class/area Dai/090 on 14 Sep). The largest of these C-class events was a C7 X-ray event observed at 17/1948 UTC from Region 2158.

By 18 September, activity increased to moderate levels. At 18/0709 UTC, Region 2169 (N05, L=290, class/area Cso/060 on 17 Sep) produced a C6/Sf which was immediately followed by an impulsive M1/Sn (R1-Minor) at 18/0841 UTC from the same region. Associated with this event were lower frequency radio emissions in the form of a Type II sweep and 245 MHz burst (16,000 sfu). An associated CME was not discernable in LASCO or STEREO imagery with the M1 event.

19-21 September saw a return to low levels with C-class activity observed from Regions 2164, 2166 (N13, L=352, class/area Dao/060 on 14 Sep), 2171 (S10, L=264, class/area Eai/160 on 21 Sep) and 2172 (S11, L=242, class/area Ekc/320 on 21 Sep). The largest event during this 3-day period was a long-duration C5/1f flare at 21/1153 UTC from Region 2166. This region had decayed to plage on 20 September. Associated with this event was a CME off the NW limb, detected by LASCO C2 imagery, first visible at 21/1236 UTC. Potential geo-effectiveness of this CME was ongoing at the time of this writing.

Other activity of note during the period was a N-S oriented, 38 degree long filament eruption along a channel centered near N25E12. The filament was observed lifting off in SDO/AIA 304 imagery from
20/2348-21/0427 UTC. No discernable CME was apparent in LASCO or STEREO imagery with the filament eruption.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal levels.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to minor storm levels. Mostly quiet levels were observed from 15 September through late on 18 September. By 18/1800 UTC, field activity increased to unsettled levels for six hours and further increased to active to minor storming through 21/0900 UTC. The field relaxed to unsettled to active levels through 21/2100 UTC when it became predominately quiet through the balance of the summary period. This period of increased
activity was attributed to a combination of transient and negative coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) effects.

During the summary period, solar wind parameters, as observed at the ACE spacecraft, reflected the geomagnetic activity described above. ACE wind speeds began the period in the 450 km/s range and gradually decreased to near 350 km/s through early on 19 September. Wind speeds then increased to about 500 km/s by late on the 19th and further increased to 550 km/s by midday on 20 September and remained elevated through midday on the 21st. Speeds then declined to end the summary period near 425 km/s.

The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bt and Bz component followed a similar trend. Bt varied weakly from 3-7 nT through about 19/0600 UTC when an increase to 10-18 nT was observed for the next 9 hours or so. Bt gradually relaxed to vary between 4-8 nT through the remainder of the period. The Bz component generally did not vary much beyond -5 to +8 nT through the summary period. The exception was a period between 19/0400-1700 UTC when Bz varied between -13 nT to +17 nT.

Phi angle measurements indicated a predominately negative (towards) orientation with positive (away) swings from about 18/1800 UTC - 19/1700 UTC and again from 21/0300 UTC - 21/1700 UTC.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 September - 18 October 2014

Solar activity is expected to be at predominately low levels with a chance for M-class activity and a slight chance for X-class activity through the outlook period. Regions currently on the disk with the
potential for major activity include Regions 2171 and 2172. Old Regions 2155 (S19, L=110), 2157 (S15, L=099) and 2158 (N16, L=089), producers of M and X-class activity on their previous transit, are all due to return on or about 28-29 September.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit in the absence of major solar activity.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be normal to moderate levels through 25 September. Moderate to high levels are expected from 26 September to 03 October
followed by a return to mostly normal levels through 18 October.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at predominately quiet levels through the outlook period. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 23-24 September due to a solar sector boundary crossing
followed by a co-rotating interaction region. Activity levels are expected to increase to unsettled to active from 25-30 September due to a series of positive polaritiy, equatorial CH HSSs. Unsettled to
active levels are expected on 15-17 October due to a negative polarity CH HSS.

Solomon Islands heard again on 9545 kHz

SIBC QSL (Gayle Van Horn QSL Collection)
Solomon Islands

(log edited for clarity)

Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation. Heard on  9545, 0845-0857 UTC. Long list of messages by lady DJ in Tok Pisin with many mentions of "studio," "transport" and "thank you for your cooperation and understanding." Two mentions of  SIBC, so obviously a lot of late shipments.

Ended at 0857 with promo, then live announcer again with program notes including a nice station identification with frequencies at 0858, and mention of "Bible reading." Sports and news , followed by mention of "bible readings."

Good signal at tune-in, but faded by 0938 UTC check.  Getting some splash interference from the 9540 China's CNR1 jammer at 1015 UTC check.  Nothing on usual freq of 5020 kHz.  Here's a link to a video of the ID    http://youtu.be/2yG7tJErJSc

Jim McGuiness: Kingdom are 'dream' All-Ireland final opponents
Donegal manager Jim McGuinness says his side facing Kerry for the Sam Maguire is his “dream final”.
“For me it’s a dream final and it’s a dream final because I grew up watching Kerry and Dublin, and Kerry and everyone else playing in All-Ireland finals,” he told RTÉ Sport ahead of Sunday’s decider at Croke Park.
“It’s the whole history of it, and for us to play them in the final is a great moment for our players.”
McGuinness laughed off the notion that success is effortless for the 36-time champions, pointing out that he has witnessed the county’s dedication to Gaelic football at first hand while a student and Sigerson Cup player at Tralee IT.

VOA Radiogram weekend schedule

Hello friends,

VOA Radiogram this weekend will include a detailed VOA news item about U.S. public diplomacy.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 77, during the weekend of 20-21 September 2014. All content is in MFSK32 centered on 1500 Hz except for two surprise modes at the end:

  1:34  Program preview
.2:35  Device produces water from fog, with image.
7:34  NASA contract for manned spacecraft, with image
11:33  NASA's asteroid detection effort, with image
18:15  US information "battle" with Russia, IS
26:41  Closing announcements

Please send reception reports to radiogram@voanews.com.

VOA Radiogram transmission schedule
(all days and times UTC):
Sat 0930-1000 5745 kHz
Sat 1600-1630 17860 kHz
Sun 0230-0300 5745 kHz
Sun 1930-2000 15670 kHz
All via the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in North Carolina.

The Radio Free Asia transmissions of digital text via shortwave have ended and will not resume. I am surprised by this decision, because the RFA tests showed that in even in the face of deliberate Chinese co-channel interference, digital text provided a very successful decode.

Here is an example: RFA Cantonese as received in Hong Kong, 14 September 2014, 2257 UTC, on 15390 kHz. The female voice is China National Radio. The male voice in the background in RFA Cantonese. The mix of CNR and RFA creates a generally inaudible mess. The Olivia 32-2000 mode penetrates the cacophony, resulting in successfully decoded text (try decoding it yourself)...

https://soundcloud.com/voaradiogram/rfa-cant-140914-2257-15390-hk

I initiated experiments with digital text via analog shortwave broadcast about two years ago to find a way to work around the blockage and censorship of Internet content. The VOA Radiogram experiments show that text and images can successfully be transmitted via shortwave: a useful capability when the Internet is blocked.

However, we can assume that if a country blocks Internet traffic, it will probably also jam shortwave transmissions. Text via shortwave must also have anti-jamming capabilities. Tests of digital text modes amid actual jamming are -- were -- essential to the VOA Radiogram concept. Now that VOA and RFA have both discontinued tests of text to China, experiments with Chinese jamming are no longer possible within the realm of US-government-funded international broadcasting.

The Mighty KBC will transmit a minute of MFSK64 Saturday at about 1130 UTC on 6095 kHz and Sunday at about 0130 UTC (Saturday 9:30 pm EDT) on 7375 kHz. Both frequencies are via Germany. Reports to themightykbc@gmail.com.

Thanks for your interesting reports from last weekend's VOA Radiogram. I will begin answering those reports now.
