DX Stamp Service March Specials

Sweden
Dear Customer,

Below are specials for March 2015.

If you need a current stamp list or supply list, I can email it to you. Stamp list now shows the countries with their own international forever stamps that I have in stock. Stamp list now highlights a few that offer priority and non-priority international options.

NEWS: France: If you have non-forever French units on hand, let me know. I now have low values to bring them up to 1,20 euro so you can put them to use. Let me know what you have. Spain: Low values now in stock to update any units you may have to their 1,00 euro rate. Mt. Athos: Now in stock and priced at $1.50, tho same rate as Greece and Greek stamps should work, I get reports of the Greek stamp being removed and Mt Athos stamps affixed instead. So this ought to solve that.

NEW $$ DEAL:  Buy a 49c discount postage deal and earn yourself a $5.00 discount on your next DX order of $50 or more. Sounds like a winner!!

Croatia priority rate is still 13,00. I mis-read their calculator...not too good reading Croatian!

Added to stamp list: Mt Athos at $1.50....seems when greek stamp is supplied it is removed and Mt Athos stamps affixed. It's same rate and always figured a greek stamp would be good....So if you work Monk Apollo, I got the proper stamp that he won't remove!

NEW RATES:
Argentina was $24 now $29
Croatia international non-priority is only 7,60k. Now available, see below.

Special QSL of the Week

First Reception Report From India

Way back nearly forty years ago, Jose Jacob VU2JOS in India tuned his radio to the tropical shortwave frequency 3925 kHz, and he heard a broadcast from NBC, the National Broadcasting Commission in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.  The callsign for this transmitter at the time was P2K3, the power was 10 kW, and the time of reception in India was 6:00 pm on October 25, 1976.

The QSL card issued by NBC Port Moresby in those days showed a yellow map of Papua New Guinea together with its surrounding islands, and the location of each of the NBC stations is shown on the map.  A typewritten note on the card acknowledges that the reception report they received from Jose Jacob was the very first from India.

Railway Radio in Australia

Part 1
The first wireless transmissions from a moving train in Australia took place during the years 1910 and 1911.  A prominent wireless experimenter in that era, George Taylor, conducted several successful experiments on moving trains that were speeding between Sydney in New South Wales and Melbourne in Victoria.
On some occasions, he placed a wireless transmitter and a receiver at two different locations on the same train and succeeded with communication between both units while the train was in motion.  On other occasions, he succeeded in making wireless communication between two different trains running at full speed.
However, during the next decade, all of the radio experiments in association with trains in Australia centered about reception on a moving train, rather than on broadcasting from a moving train.
On April 7, 1924, for example, a passenger train left Melbourne bound for Sydney with a radio receiver aboard, and a musical concert on the air from a mediumwave broadcasting station in Sydney was heard quite clearly.  This was an all time first in Australia.
Six months later, a similar experiment was conducted in South Australia.  At 2:35 in the afternoon on October 10 (1924), a special train left the Adelaide railway station bound for Belair in the nearby Adelaide Hills, and aboard were fifteen radio receivers.
Initially, all of the receivers were tuned to the same radio station so that passengers could readily make a comparison between receivers of various makes.  Soon afterwards though, the receivers were tuned to whatever station the listener desired to hear, and they could tune in to the music  programming from any of four different stations, amateur or broadcast: 5AB, 5DN, 5RM or 5RG.
This special railroad trip attracted so many people that the railway officials had to connect a second carriage in order to accommodate the three hundred people who desired to participate.  On the return journey, the train stopped inside a tunnel in order to check radio reception there.  However, the listeners discovered that signals from all four radio stations were degraded inside the tunnel.
A subsequent event on a special train running from Adelaide to suburban outer Hallett Cove on the coastline attracted five hundred people, and nine radio receivers were installed aboard.
In June 1926, radio reception tests were made in a VIP carriage known as the Norman Car.  This carriage was attached to a train leaving the Flinders Street station in Melbourne.  It was reported that several radio broadcasting stations were picked up well, and that the receivers did not need an earth connection.
Similar experiments were conducted on moving trains in country areas also, and in 1925, reception experiments were conducted in a special carriage attached to a train running from Cockburn to Mt. Dutton, in the outback areas towards the center of the continent.  The external receiving antenna was attached above the roof of the carriage and reception from radio broadcasting stations was described as good..
The first radio broadcasting station aboard a railway train in Australia was station 2XT, a 500 watt AWA transmitter on 1175 kHz.  This radio station was part of an exhibit on board an exhibition train, known as the Great White Train, which started out from Sydney on November 11, 1925.  It is claimed that this was the first radio broadcasting station on a train anywhere in the world.
A total of fifteen carriages carried commercial exhibits from thirty well known manufacturing companies, and in its two year tour throughout country areas in the state of New South Wales, the train travelled 45,000 miles and visited more than one hundred towns, attracting more than half a million visitors.  Station 2XT was installed in a carriage that was occupied completely with electronic equipment manufactured by the AWA company.
The train would arrive at each new location in the morning, the staff would then go out and visit trades people, and in the afternoon and evening the exhibits were open to local visitors.  Usually there was an official Civic Reception in each town with local community leaders.
The first stop on this long and very successful tour was at Gosford, north of Sydney.  The stay at any particular town was extended up to as many as five days.
The radio station 2XT was on the air in two sessions each day, from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm and again from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.  Live programming featured recorded music, speeches from local civic and commercial personnel, as well as information about the contents in each of the exhibits aboard the train.
The antenna was a single wire 60 feet long on masts at a height of 40 feet above the AWA carriage, and the rails served as an earthing system.  Reception reports were received from listeners all over Australia and New Zealand, and also up in New Guinea.
Sometime during month of December, 1927, mobile radio station 2XT on the Great White Train made its last program broadcast at its last visit to a small country town in the Australian state of New South Wales.  The train returned to Sydney and all of the exhibits were unloaded.  We can only presume that the radio transmitter was also unloaded from the train, and perhaps sold off to a land based radio station for installation at a new location.  But where?  I guess we will never know!

There are no known QSL cards or letters verifying reception of station 2XT aboard the Great White Train.  However, Dr. Bruce Cartys splendid large format book, On the Air: Australian Radio History, carries a picture, on one of its early pages, of the advertising leaflet that was distributed in each town that the train visited.  The Carty book shows the leaflet that was imprinted for the visit to the large regional city of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 16 - 22 February 2015

Solar activity began the period with very low levels on 16-17 February with a few B-class flares observed from Region 2282 (N11, L-187, class/area Eho/250 on 11 Feb). Activity increased to low levels on 18-21 February with weak C-class flares observed from Regions 2282 and 2286 (S18, L=193, class/area Cao/030 on 18 Feb). During this time frame, the largest events were a C3/Sf flare at 18/2207 UTC from Region 2282 and a long duration C2 x-ray event on 20/1522 UTC from departed Region 2286. By 22 February, activity declined to very low levels. During the period, no Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. However, a greater than 10 MeV proton enhancement was observed beginning midday on 21 February and remained enhanced through period's end. Peak flux reached 1.3 pfu at 21/1925 UTC. The enhancement was due to effects from a large CME whose origin was a large filament eruption located backside in the south central portion of the disk.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 16, 19-21 February and normal levels on 17-18 and 22 February.

Geomagnetic field activity was generally quiet to unsettled throughout the week with periods of active to isolated minor storm periods on 17-18 February. This activity was due to high speed winds from a negative polarity, trans-equatorial coronal hole. Solar wind speeds were mostly nominal through the period at 325-350 km/s but reached a peak of about 485 km/s early on 18 February. IMF total field averaged about 5 nT with a maximum of 16 nT observed early on 17 February. The Bz component did not vary much beyond +/- 5 nT for a majority of the period. However, during the coronal hole influence, Bz ranged from +14 to -12 nT. Phi was in a predominately negative (towards) orientation throughout the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 23 February - 21 March 2015

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels through about 04 March. From 05-18 March, a chance for moderate activity exists due to the return of old Region 2282 (N11, L=191) which was an M-class flare producer on its last transit. Upon old Region 2282's exit, very low to low conditions are expected from 19-21 March.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit in the absence of any significant solar activity.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout a majority of the outlook period. However, moderate to high levels are likely on 01-09 March and again on 15-19 March due to coronal hole high speed
stream activity.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at predominately quiet to unsettled levels throughout the outlook period with active conditions likely on 27-28 February, 01-02 March and 16-17 March due to coronal hole high speed stream activity.

Radio Öömrang annual broadcast

This year, on February 21, 2015, radio hobbyists are gearing up to monitor the annual broadcast from Radio Öömrang ("Radio Amrum") which is a major Frisian holiday.

Programming was originally founded by the radio amateur Arjan Kölzow on the island of Amrum in North Germany. The first program on shortwave was February 21, 2006. Programming is broadcast in Frisian, an Öömrang dialect, as well as broadcasting in Standard German. The annual broadcast is aimed at the descendants of North Frisian immigrants in North America.

English station identifications have been heard as; :this is Radio Öömrang, the free voice of the Frisian people."  Programming is relayed via Media Broadcast facilities.

At this publishing time, final broadcast confirmation has not been received, however as in previous years, the following schedule information is indicated. Any corrected schedule will be posted on this blog.

Annual shortwave broadcast of Radio Öömrang from Amrum Island, German North Frisian Islands

Schedule in 2014 was 1600-1659 UTC on 15215 kHz via Media Broadcast in Frisian dialect, German and English.

A reply in response to this year's planned broadcast: Many thanks for your kind email. As always, reception reports are most welcome, send to:

Afreet Ham CAP Integration — DXtreme’s DX Spot Checker integrates with Afreet Ham CAP, an optional HF propagation prediction program available from Afreet Software, Inc. Users activate Ham CAP by requesting short- or long-path propagation predictions on spotted stations.

Direct Tune — Users can now change their rig's frequency and mode from the Station Log window (in addition to within the DX Spot Checker) if they are using Afreet Omni-Rig for rig control.

Social Media Posting — When users add or display a log entry, Station Log prepares an announcement of the contact and displays it on the Social Media Post tab. From there, users can drag (or copy) the post to their favorite social media web site(s) to share their news with others.
Using the Script Editor window, users can create and edit social media scripts that format their social media posts. Four social media scripts come with the software.

Last Log Entries Window — In addition to the Last Log Entries grid on the Station Log window, users can now display a re-sizeable Last Log Entries Window when more room is needed to display contact information. A Properties dialog box lets users change the order of columns, set foreground and background colors of grid headings and data rows, plus more. Double-clicking records displays their detailed data on the Station Log window.

WAS Analytics™ — A window-based tool, WAS Analytics lets users analyze their Worked All States (WAS) data and quickly access the specific log entries upon which they need to take some kind of action, such as submitting or re-submitting a QSL or e-mailing the ham they contacted.
Standard Features  DXtreme Station Log lets hams log their contacts and import ADIF files from other programs. It supports major call sign subscription services, and offers the following multimedia and advanced functions:

DX Spot Checker™ — Receives DX spots from Telnet-based servers, and determines whether QSOs are needed for new or verified DXCC® entities, band-entities, mode-entities, or VUCC grids.

DX Atlas Integration — Performs DX Atlas azimuth plots from the user’s location to that of a spotted or logged station. Also creates maps for a variety of reports. (A software license for Afreet DX Atlas is required to use it.)

Band Master Integration — Afreet Band Master can be invoked with Needed Lists based on the user’s Station Log database. (A software license for Afreet Band Master is required to use it.)

Rig Control — Tunes/retrieves frequencies and modes from supported rigs through integration with Afreet Omni-Rig, available from Afreet Software.

QSL Processing — Creates QSL and address labels for physical QSLs, and supports the ARRL’s TQSL program for uploading .TQ8 files to the LoTW server automatically. Also retrieves LoTW QSL records, and includes a QSL Imaging™ facility for scanning, capturing, and displaying physical and electronic QSLs, including LoTW QSLs.

Audio Facility — Records and plays QSOs.

Reports — Provides a wide range of performance and station reports to let users see how well they’re doing. All reports can be filtered and sorted. Includes a window-based DXCC® Analytics™ tool for analyzing and enhancing DXCC standing.

Operating System and Requirements
DXtreme Station Log runs in 32- and 64-bit versions of Microsoft® Windows® 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista®, and Windows XP.

QSL Report: February 2015

Shortwave Listener QSL Cards

Shortwave listeners, who are not amateur radio operators, have their own method of QSLing the hams. Listeners gather contact information, and report to the operator, similar to gathering program details from shortwave broadcasters.

Many listener's have their own 'SWL Station' card they send to the hams, which is returned to the listener as verified using the ham's own QSL card. Most of the time, ham operators verify shortwave listener's reports via the ARRL outgoing bureau. Many of the 'SWL' cards, are sent to hams via the ARRL incoming bureau.

In some countries, potential amateur radio operators, are required to gather certain amounts of ham QSL cards via this method as part of the requirements to become an operator in their country. Many shortwave listener's, enclose their unique QSL card, with the reception report to international shortwave broadcasters.
