Free Radio Service seeks listener input

 
Dear FRS Friends, 

We at FRS (Free Radio Service) were happy with the response on our 200th official broadcast on Sunday August 30th. We received a fine number of most interesting mails and letters, some from 'long ago listeners' and others from new listeners. And amazing reception in the US/Canada later in the evening! But (and this is even more important!) solid reception in Europe, particularly in the mid and later part of the evening. 

The comprehensive FRS Summer 2020 Newsletter tells it all, and in the mean time, we have responded to all those writing in for the FRS Summer Splash as well as the 200th broadcast August 30th. It was a huge job but looking at some of the mail we received, it was worth doing.

Most likely early November we hope to celebrate four decades of FRS-Holland on short wave. and welcome your participation. In all those many years we have often tried to involve listeners in our broadcasts. Many of you will know what I mean.

We'd kindly request to answer and reply to these two questions: 

Q1) When did you listen to FRS-Holland for the very first time?

It could be an exact date but if you cannot remember that's no problem. 'Summer 1983', 'late 1998' , Spring 2005'' ...all is ok! And: if you can add a just a few  explanatory words. that would be wonderful. Like: 'I first heard FRS-Holland because early 2001 I bought myself a new SW receiver. One of the first times I used it, I came along FRS-Holland." Or: "I read about FRS in a magazine and was curious to hear the station.' 'I heard it from a fellow DXer.'  There are various good reasons! If you remember please mention it.

Q2) And why are you still listening to FRSH?  

Please come up with one or a few arguments. Most likely you have already mentioned (a) reason(s) in a mail/ letter you once sent.

ON AIR - 100 Years of Radio
On October 1, the time has come - the exhibition ON AIR - 100 Years of Radio will open in the Museum for Communication Berlin. Based on Germany's first radio broadcast on December 22, 1920, it sheds light on the successes, breaks and futures of the world's first electronic mass medium.

The exhibition organizers have come up with something very special for the opening - a radio evening with radio legend Jürgen Kuttner. In a varied hour it is about the art of radio making, a foray through the history of music and of course interesting facts about the exhibition on 100 years of radio.

The Funkerberg will also contribute a small part to this event. The museum channel welle370 will broadcast the opening live on October 1, 2020. On the shortwave frequency of 5980 kHz, radio listeners all over Europe can take https://100jahrerundfunk.de/onair/ part in this unique opening from 19:00 to 20:00 CEST. For a confirmation of receipt, listeners receive a very special QSL card.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 September 2020

Solar activity was very low on 21-24 and 26-27 Sep. Solar activity reached low levels on 25 Sept when Region 2773 (N28, L=083, class/area=Bxo/10 on 23 Sep) produced a single C1 flare at 0038 UTC. No Earth-directed CMEs were detected this period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 24-27 Sept. The normal to moderate flux levels were observed throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storm levels on 27 Sept, with G1 (Minor) storm levels were observed on 24-26 Sept, and are due to the influences of a pair of positive polarity coronal hole high speed streams. Active conditions were observed on 23 Sept. Quiet and quiet to the unsettled conditions prevailed throughout the remainder of the week. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 September - 24 October 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 28 Sept-10 Oct and 21-24 Oct. Normal and normal to moderate flux levels are expected to persist during the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is anticipated to reach G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storm levels on 28-29 Sept, with G1 at Minor storm levels likely on 30 Sept, and 21-23 Oct, due to CH HSS influence. The active conditions are likely on 01, 20, and 24 Oct. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the period.

Antarctica 
On Saturday 26th September, LRA 36 transmission, I received a Whattsapp voice message from the station operator Damian Tranamil:
 
"The rhombic antenna of the station is damaged, Damian managed to repair it provisionally the past Wednesday, when he returned to Base Esperanza from Chilean  Base O’Higgins, where he is doing rescue exercises with Chilean staff of Chilean Base. In this way the regular program "Corazón Antártico" could be issued.
 
Saturday, Damian will try to put on air all the canned "Corazón Antártico" programs that he could not broadcast the previous Wednesdays due to the broken antenna and his stay on Base O'Higgins, these programs are in Spanish. He will also broadcast a half-hour program in German that Adrian Korol, RAE director sent to him. 
 
No program in English is planned.
 Transmission will be if the weather conditions allow it.
 After Saturday, Damian will return to the Chilean base to continue the exercises and in October he will try to repair definitely the damage antenna.

Sarabande by Caroline Shaw sung by Room Full of Teeth comes next and the program finishes with some Gabrieli and part of Bizet's first symphony.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedule

 

Hello friends,

Perhaps because of equinox propagation, reception of Shortwave Radiogram has been difficult lately in some parts of the world. Listeners in the eastern half of North America have been especially affected, with many of our frequencies (15770 for example) "going long." To compensate for any reception difficulties this weekend, we will include some MFSK16 text -- slow but robust -- in addition to our usual MFSK32 and MFSK64.

We will also transmit this black-and-white test pattern in all three modes (MFSK16, 32 and 64) so that you can observe the differences in resolution among the MFSK modes. The transmission time is about the same for all three. 

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 170) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), 2010DFS in Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz), Ralf in Germany and Frigid RF in Virginia (both Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. Radio Igloo to broadcast Sept 25th

 

Hello friends of Radio Igloo, 

When we were transmitting our last show on June 26th the conditions were bad. Lots of thunder over Europe and a Chinese on 6290 made the reception difficult in many places.

 We have asked our Broadcasting Engineer to rebroadcast the show. He has agreed to do it in the evening on September 25th at 19.0 UTC (21.0 CEST) on 6290 kHz or on a free frequency nearby. The intermission signal will be on a few minutes before program-start.

What, exactly, was “first” about KDKA’s broadcast on Nov. 2, 1920?

As history articles in Radio World demonstrate, there really was no single “first day” of “radio.” Various dates and organizations could lay claim to some or all of the honor depending on how one defines it. 

Radio history fans are well aware of this, but many others are not.

In celebrating the upcoming KDKA anniversary, most people are likely to say something like “Radio started in November 1920.” I wasn’t happy with this simplification, so I turned to two of RW’s favorite radio history writers, John Schneider and James O’Neal.

I picked up the new book Compromised last week and was intrigued to discover that it may have shed some light on a small (and rather esoteric) cryptologic and espionage mystery that I've been puzzling over for about 15 years. Compromised is primarily a memoir of former FBI counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok's investigation into Russian operations in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election, but this post  is not a review of the book or concerned with that aspect of it.

Texas Radio Shortwave, October-December broadcast schedules

 

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TEXAS RADIO SHORTWAVE ANNOUNCES PROGRAM LINEUP FOR REST OF 2020

GULF OF MEXICO, September 19, 2020/ - Texas Radio Shortwave, an American free radio station, today announced its program lineup for October through December 2020.

Texas Radio Shortwave offers programs featuring music by Texas artists, except for some rebroadcasts of programs from its early days. The older programs are clearly identified during the broadcasts.

Programs will air on Channel 292 from Rohrbach, Germany with 10 kW of power. Frequencies and air times -- with one exception -- are 0200 UTC on 9670 kHz and 0900 UTC on 6070 kHz. The exception is Christmas Day, with broadcasts at 0200 UTC on 9670 kHz and 1900 UTC on 6070 kHz.

The lineup for the rest of 2020 looks like this: October 17 - Ladies of Texas Music Special:

November 21 - rebroadcast of Texas Radio Shortwave’s first program from 2019; December 19 -  rebroadcast of the Pre-Christmas Music Special from 2019; and December 25 - the Texas Christmas Music Special.

Texas Radio Shortwave sends limited-edition commemorative electronic verifications to the listeners sending correct, detailed reception reports. The email address is texasradiosw@gmail.com.

Reception reports should include times, song titles, the text of announcements, a SINPO/SIO signal rating, information on the listener’s receiver and antenna, and comments on the program content. For the listeners using a remote software-defined radio (SDR) should mention that. Audio clips are also welcomed.

Listeners worldwide may tune to Texas Radio Shortwave broadcasts using an SDR like the one at the University of Twente in The Netherlands. The URL is http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/.

Australia's Best Known MicroNation is no More: The Story of Hutt River Radio

 

Several recent news reports tell us that the half century old Hutt River Principality, a self proclaimed independent nation within Australia, has finally come to an end, and it has since rejoined the Commonwealth of Australia.  The Hutt River Principality was the oldest of Australia’s independent micro-nations, and it has served as an interesting tourist attraction for those who dared to drive out into the semi-desert areas of Western Australia.

It is estimated that currently there are a hundred different small and independent micro-nations around the world, with 35 in Australia alone, the highest concentration anywhere. The Hutt River Principality was the first, the oldest surviving, and probably the best known independent micro-nation downunder.

It all began when Farmer Leonard G. Casley developed a quarrel in 1970 with the government of Western Australia over their imposed restriction in the amount of grain his 18,500 acres of land was permitted to produce.  Because of the lost income due to this huge reduction in productivity, Casley appealed to the state governor, Sir Douglas Kendrew for an increase in the farming quota on his land, which was refused.   

Casley then responded with an application for independence from the State of Western Australia, which understandably was refused by the state parliament, though the matter was discussed also by the federal government in Canberra.  Thus it was on Tuesday April 21, 1970, that Leonard Casley, together with his Fremantle born wife Shirley and their seven children, delivered an ultimatum stating that he was seceding his property from the State of Western Australia, and from the Federation of Australia, and from the British Commonwealth of Nations, though he still honored his allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2.  

Together with the adjoining properties of five other families making up a total of 75 square miles of farm and pasture land some 25 miles inland from Geraldton on the Indian Ocean, the new micro-nation of Hutt River Principality was born, with a total population of 20 citizens.  The main protagonist in all of these maneuvers was himself elected, as His Royal Highness Prince Leonard of Hutt, together with his wife as Princess Shirley.  

Life was not easy for the new and independent nation, and difficulties were encountered with postal mail deliveries, and government taxes that were levied on goods into and out of Hutt River. At one stage, they were routing the delivery of their international mail via Canada.  In fact over all of these matters, Prince Leonard declared war against the state of Western Australia, and this at a time when Hutt River had no standing army. 

However, after this brief and unfulfilled non-event, Hutt River settled down to its main function as a tourist attraction, a geographic anomaly, an eccentric place of unusual interest, just something different in the Australian psyche.  At the height of their prosperity, Hutt River welcomed as many as 40,00 visitors in a single year.  

Hutt River issued its own postage stamps, and coins, and passports, and drivers licenses, and a newspaper. They implemented their own ceremonial events and memorial occasions, and they flew their own flag, and they sang their own National Anthem.  Their official languages were English, French and Esperanto.  They established diplomatic relations with several other countries overseas, and they granted honorary citizenship to many of their supporters.  


On the radio scene, Hutt River applied to the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) in Geneva Switzerland for the amateur prefix H5, and they issued their first amateur license with the callsign 1RC.  In 1981 they inaugurated their own radio broadcasting station with 200 watts on 1050 kHz under the callsign HRBA, the Hutt River Broadcasting Authority. 

Their parallel FM outlet radiated locally on 100 MHz.  These two stations were on the air with occasional programming, until the licensing authority in Australia ordered them off the air.  A small TV station was also planned.

Then too, they announced their intention to introduce an international shortwave service which would broadcast old time programming, replays of old dramas, music from yesteryear, readings from newspapers, and information from humanitarian organizations.  In 1983, Hutt River made an informal approach to Adventist World Radio for assistance and cooperation in establishing their planned shortwave service. 

However earlier this year (2020), the tourist flow began to diminish due to the China Virus, and by this time, both Prince Leonard and Princess Shirley had died. The new ruler was their son Prince Graeme, and with a diminishing income, he closed down the Hutt River Principality on August 3 (2020), thus rejoining this novel territory once again back into the Commonwealth of Australia. Graeme Casley also stated that he needs to sell their large farm property in order to pay the $2.15 million tax debt currently owed to the state government.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 September 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the reporting period. No spotted regions were observed on the visible disk. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels over the reporting period. The peak flux, as measured by GOES-16, was 289 pfu at 18/1905 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled. Unsettled conditions were observed on 14-15 Sep in response to weak enhancements from positive polarity CH HSS influence. Another isolated period of unsettled was observed on 18 Sep in response to a possible weak transient. The remainder of the reporting period was quiet under nominal solar wind conditions. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 September - 17 October 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is  expected to range from normal to high levels. High levels are anticipated from 26 Sep - 10 Oct in response to a influence from positive polarity CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at normal to moderate levels. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 conditions are likely on 27 Sept; active conditions are likely to be on 24-25 Sept and 28 Sept; as unsettled conditions are likely on 23 Sep, 26 Sep, 29 Sep and 11 Oct. All enhancements in geomagnetic activity are due to multiple, positive polarity CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedule

 



Hello friends,

I hope that everyone in our family of listeners is OK, given the ongoing natural disasters, such as the fires in the western USA, Hurricane Sally and the flooding in the US Gulf area, and the floods in many other parts of the world. Here in northern Virginia, the weather is relatively boring.

Speaking of the weather, it was the heavy rain in eastern Pennsylvania that caused the missing WINB transmission Thursday, 10 September, at 2330 UTC. WINB was back on the air the next day.  I hope we transmit a full schedule this weekend.

Last weekend's excerpt of Hungarian text from the revived RFE/RL Hungarian Service was received and decoded successfully all over the world, including all the diacritics. Here is an example as transmitted from Florida and received in, appropriately, Hungary.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 169) are provided by 2010DFS in Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 7730 kHz) and by Ralf in Germany and Scott in Ontario (both Sunday 2330 UTC). Scott usually prepares his video from a transmission on 15770 kHz, but this frequency did not propagate well within North America last weekend. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine images (1 x MFSK32 and 8 x MFSK64).

Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. 

Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG lists all AM stations in Mexico by frequency, including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. 

The call letter index gives call, frequency, city and state. The city index (listed by state, then city) includes frequency, call and day/night power. The transmitter site index (listed by state, then city) tabulates the latitude and longitude of transmitter sites. 

Also, in this edition, there is a spread sheet with links to web sites, live broadcasts and facebook page of many of the Mexican stations. This is an indispensable reference for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 - 13 September 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the reporting period. No spotted regions were observed on the visible disk and no Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to high levels throughout the reporting period. GOES-16 peak flux reached 10,200 pfu at 07/1600 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled under a mostly nominal solar wind regime.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 September - 10 October 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels for the outlook
period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 14 - 25 Sep and at high levels, following CH HSS activity, from 26 Sep - 10 Oct.

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 levels are likely to be on 27 September, and active levels are likely on 25-26 Sep and 28 Sep; unsettled levels are likely on 23-24 Sep and 29 Sep. All elevated levels of geomagnetic activity are in response to anticipated CH HSS influence. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to observe quiet conditions.
