Shortwave Radiogram schedules, Friday-Sunday

Hello friends,

Is anyone using, or attempting to use, Fldigi with the MacOS Big Sur? John in Texas, who reports every week via email, writes: "just upgraded to Apple's new OS Big Sur 11.0.1 and FLDigi seems to communicate with the radio, but the FLdigi 4.1.15.05 display is blank." He also tried upgrading to Fldigi 4.1.16 and moving back to 4.1.14, with no success. If you have advice, please send it to our usual email radiogram@verizon.net and I'll pass it on.

During our Sunday 0800-0830 UTC transmission, 5850 and 7730 kHz from WRMI Florida, there is now enough darkness over the North Atlantic to enable reception in Europe, at least in some locations. Lately there has been a data signal on 5850 kHz that disrupts reception on that frequency, although our MFSK might be partially decodable on either side of the co-channel signal.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 178) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and UR1002 SWL in California (the MFSK32 closing of the Friday 1500 UTC DRM transmission as received on a Uniwave Di-Wave 100 DRM radio). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in our tried-and-true MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eleven MFSK64 images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 179,  20-22 November 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:41  MFSK32: Program preview
2:44  Quebec mandates electric cars starting 2035
6:16  MFSK64: UK studies orbital solar power plants*
11:11  This week's images*
27:57  MFSK32: Closing announcements

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 09 - 15 November 2020

Solar activity was at very low to low levels during the period. Very low levels were observed on 09 Nov and 13-15 Nov, while low levels occurred on 10-12 Nov. Region 2781 (S23, L=255, class/area Eki/475 on 06 Nov) produced a C1/Sf flare observed at 10/1946 UTC. The C-class activity was observed on 11-12 Nov from new Region 2782 (S31, L=155, class/area Cro/030 on 12 Nov), the largest was a C2/Sf flare observed at 11/1912 UTC. No Earth-directed CME activity was observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 11 Nov with a maximum flux of 2,250 pfu observed at 11/1655 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 09-10 Nov and 12-15 Nov.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet throughout the period. A nominal solar wind regime dominated the period with a mostly neutral IMF. Solar wind speeds generally ranged between about 295 km/s to 445 km/s under a predominately negative phi orientation.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 16 November - 12 December 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low from 16-27 Nov and 12 Dec. The return of old Region 2781 (S23, L=255) from 28 Nov - 11 Dec is expected to increase solar activity levels to very low to low.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 16 - 20 Nov and again on 29 Nov - 12 Dec. High levels are expected from 21-28 Nov due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on 21 - 25 Nov and again on 03-04 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Active intervals are possible on 22, 24 and 25 Nov. Mostly quiet conditions are expected to prevail for 16-20 Nov, 26 Nov - 02 Dec and 05-12 Dec.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

Hello friends,

During the past two weekends, we saw a few examples of the new MFSK wide modes providing an improvement over the conventional MFSK32 and MFSK64. While the tests were mostly inconclusive, we did learn about the performance of the wide modes based on your reports (thank you!). John KL4YFD is using this information to work on different versions of the wide modes. We might be able to try these in future broadcasts.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 177) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Saturday 1330) and Jeff in Oklahoma (Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

No experiments this weekend. We will return to our usual format consisting entirely of MFSK32 and MFSK64 text, with eight MFSK64 images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 178, 13-15 November 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:39  MFSK32: Program preview

2:43  Hurricanes lingering longer after landfall

 5:58  MFSK64: Science's top 10 erroneous results

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 - 08 November 2020

Solar activity was at very low to low levels during the period. Very low levels were observed on 02 Nov. Activity increased to low levels on 03-08 Nov with the emergence of Region 2781 (S23, L=255,  class/area Eki/475 on 06 Nov). This fairly large, complex beta-gamma region produced numerous C-class events, the largest a C7/1f observed at 05/0022 UTC. Though some intermediate spot decay was evident by 08 Nov, the region continued to produce low-level activity. Region 2780 (N20, L=278, class/area Bxo/010 on 07 Nov) was quiet throughout the highlight period.

A slow-moving CME was detected off the WNW limb in LASCO C2 imagery, first visible at 08/1936 UTC. Initial model analysis indicated there was no Earth-directed component, but further analysis is ongoing. No other CMEs were detected during the highlight period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 05 and 06 Nov with a peak flux of 2,950 pfu observed at 05/1540 UTC. Moderate levels were observed on 02-04 Nov and 07-08 Nov.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet levels with a few isolated unsettled intervals observed on 06 and 07 Nov due to weak, negative polarity CH HSS effects. The period began under a nominal solar wind environment with a predominately positive phi angle. By about 05/1400 UTC, a SSBC was observed as phi rotated from a positive to negative orientation. Solar wind parameters responded midday on 05 Nov through 07 Nov with an increase in the total field to 10 nT while the Bz component reached -8 nT. Solar wind speeds increased from about 300 km/s to about 500 km/s. By 08 Nov, wind parameters were at more nominal levels with a neutral IMF and wind speeds near 425 km/s.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 09 November - 05 December 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels, with a slight chance for R1 (Minor) levels, on 09-15 Nov as Rgn 2781 remains on the visible disk. Very low to low levels are possible on 16-27 Nov due to the return of old Rgns 2778 (S22, L=084) and 2779 (S17, L=076). By 28 Nov through 05 Dec, activity levels are expected to increase to low, with a slight chance of R1 (Minor) activity, due to the return old Rgn 2781 (S23, L=255)

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 09-20 Nov and 29 Nov - 05 Dec. High levels are expected on 21-28 Nov due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on 12-13 Nov and 03-04 Dec due to recurrent, negative polarity CH HSS. Unsettled to isolated active conditions are expected on 17-25 Nov due to recurrent, positive polarity CH HSS influence. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for 09-11, 14-16 Nov, 26 Nov - 02 Dec, and 05 Dec.

The website is www.tumbril.co.uk where we show transmission times and frequencies, the playlist for the most recent programme, more information about Radio Tumbril, and the email link.

This week's programme begins with the soprano Fatma Said singing a song by a contemporary Lebanese composer. Then we have a piano nocturne from Chopin, part of Mozart's Requiem,  a contemporary piece by American composer Caroline Shaw, and another song from Fatma Said. Next - a piece by Benjamin Britten followed by a piece about him. The programme finishes with the first movement of Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony. So just the usual Fabergé egg of aural delights.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.
A very good site for online SDR receivers all over the world is: http://kiwisdr.com/public/  Click the 'Map' button in the top left of the screen.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, November 6-8

Hello friends,

With the wintertime change now fully in effect, please note that broadcasts of Shortwave Radiogram from WRMI Florida stay with their UTC times, so they are one hour earlier by local time in most of North America and Europe. Broadcasts from WINB Pennsylvania on 9265 kHz stay with Eastern Time, so they are one hour later by UTC. However, the WINB DRM transmission stays with UTC. See the schedule below.

Last weekend we experimented with the new modes MFSK32WIDE and MFSK64WIDE. See this page for more information about these new modes. The 2000 Hz bandwidth is designed to increase redundancy and thus the accuracy of the text decode over the conventional MFSK32 and MFSK64 modes.

One "problem" is that MFSK32 is such a good mode that it is difficult to find signals bad enough to result in errors that can be improved upon by MFSK32WIDE. We did find a few examples of improved decode with MFSK32WIDE. Differences with MFSK64 and MFSK64WIDE were difficult to discern, but testing continues.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 176) is provided by Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend we will limit our experiment to MFSK32 versus MFSK32WIDE. Another problem with last week's tests is that, as we are aware, the signal of Shortwave Radiogram can deteriorate or improve during the half-hour. If several minutes elapse between one mode and the next, changing conditions would give the erroneous impression that one mode is better than another. To correct for this, we will tighten up the amount of time between modes. This will consist of six transmissions, each between 1 1/2 and 2 minutes in length, three MFSK32 and three MFSK32WIDE. Please observe if the decode of MFSK32WIDE improves upon that of MFSK32. Of course, challenging reception conditions will make this experiment more interesting.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, as well as the new MFSK32WIDE. You will need Fldigi 4.1.15.05 or newer (available here) to decode the MFSK32WIDE. If you do not have this version, or if  you use TIVAR/AndFlmsg, you will miss less than five minutes of the show. You can access the entire article about the New York City bookstore here.

We'll be so busy comparing modes that we will only have time for seven MFSK64 images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 177, 6-8 November 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:44  MFSK32: Program preview
3:18  MFSK32: Independent bookstore in New York City
 5:13  MFSK32WIDE: Bookstore (continued)**
 6:47  MFSK32: Bookstore (continued)
 8:50  MFSK32WIDE: Bookstore (continued)**
10:26  MFSK32: Bookstore (continued)
12:12  MFSK32WIDE: Bookstore (continued)**
14:01  MFSK64: This week's images
28:07  MFSK32: Closing announcements

** Text will not appear in the receive pane until about 20 seconds
after the sound of the mode begins.

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net, or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Thursdays 0000 UTC (Wednesdays 7 pm EST) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!
