KTWR's DXers Diary program reminder

My Name is Arun Kumar Narasimhan from Chennai in India and I have been producing and presenting DXers Diary, (from January 3, 2021) a five-minute DX program on KTWR's DRM broadcast on 15200 kHz at 10:.26 UTC every Sunday. (* Suns only 1026-1056 UT, to zone 41, 90 kW, 285 degr in DRM mode]

This program is designed to make it easy for listeners to contribute to the advancement of the DX hobby. In this program, we broadcast listeners' logs, and band scans sent to us from listeners across the world, plus news, and frequency changes from various radio stations.

Shortwave radiogram schedules, Saturday-Sunday

 

Hello friends

This weekend we will finally transmit a photo of a cicada. The present brood of the 17-year cicadas, and their wonderful sound, won't be around much longer. And I probably won't be around for their next appearance, so I am enjoying the critters as much as I can.

Speaking of things that are going away, this weekend will be the last transmission of Shortwave Radiogram on WRMI's 9955 kHz, Saturday 0000-0030 UTC (Friday evening in the Americas). WRMI has a new show for that slot. The 9955 kHz frequency was great while it lasted, reaching from South America (its nominal target) to upper Alberta, and sometimes Europe.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 205) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. This week's program (first transmission on Saturday by Channel 292) starts with some ballet music from Poulenc, some incidental music from Fauré, and a modern hymn to the Titanic by Gavin Bryars.
After that Theme from Paul Hindemith's The Four Temperaments, some more Gavin Bryars, and a sonata for recorder and basso continuo composed by eighteenth-century Neapolitan Francesco Mancini.
The last section of the programme has two modern pieces by contemporary acoustic ensembles and finishes with part of Schubert's String Quartet No. 13.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 May 2021

Solar activity ranged from very low to moderate levels with the majority of the flare activity caused by Region 2824 (N21, L=195, class/area Csi/190 on 22 May). Very low levels were observed on 17 and 19-20 May with Low levels occurring on 18 and 21 May. Activity increased to moderate levels on 22-23 May due to a series of M1 flares from Region 2824 at 22/1711, 22/2136, and 23/1108 UTC. And in addition to the M-class flares were several noteworthy C-class flares, including an impulsive C6/1n at 22/0256 UTC with an associated Type II (1530 km/s) Radio sweep, an impulsive C6/1n with an associated Type II (653 km/s), and a long duration C1 at 22/0844 UTC. Multiple CME signatures were observed from the region associated with these flares (and others). Each was modelled and put into a consolidated WSA-ENLIL run showing arrival times beginning late on 25 May. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels with a peak flux of 1,040 pfu which was briefly reached at 22/1635 UTC. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. The period began with nominal solar wind values in the 325-420 km/s range through early on 20 May. An isolated active period was observed early on 18 May due to possible weak CME influence from 13 May. The geomagnetic field was quiet on 17 May, quiet to active on 18 May, and quiet to be unsettled on 19 May.

Beginning at 20/1845 UTC, the total field increased to 19 nT while solar wind speed subsequently were increased to near 575 km/s due to the onset of a negative polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind speed slowly decreased back to nominal levels by the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 20 May, quiet to unsettled on 21 May, and quiet levels thereafter. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 May - 19 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for further M-class flares on 24-30 May as Region 2824 rotates across the visible disk. Very low levels are expected on 31 May - 11 Jun. Low levels are expected to return on 12-19 Jun as Region 2824 rotates back onto the visible disk. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 26-29 May due to CME enhancements. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach G1 (Minor) storm levels on 25-27 May with G2 (Moderate) storming on 26 May due to the arrival of multiple CMEs from 22-23 May. G1 (Minor) storming is also likely on 16 Jun as a recurrent, negative polarity CH HSS is expected to become geoeffective.

Straits Voice Broadcasting Station announces temporary shutdown


Due to the maintenance and debugging of launching station equipment, Straits Voice Broadcasting Station news broadcast shortwave 4940kHz, Hokkien dialect broadcast shortwave 4900kHz will be suspended from May 16 to July 13, 2021, July 14. Airing resumed on the same day.

During the short-wave shutdown and maintenance period, news broadcasts were broadcast at medium wave 666kHz and Fuzhou area FM 90.6MHz; Hokkien dialect broadcasts at 783kHz medium wave and Xiamen area FM 97.9MHz were broadcast normally.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 - 16 May 2021

Solar activity was very low on 10-11, 13-16 May. Low levels were observed on 12 May due to an isolated C1/Sf flare from Region 2822 at 12/0935 UTC. Region 2822 (N18, L=335, class/area=Dao/190 on 12 May) was the most complex and active region this period, and was the source of an Earth-directed CME observed on 09 May, which arrived at Earth on 12 May. Coronal dimming in the vicinity of Region 2822 on 13 May was associated with another Earth-directed CME which is anticipated to arrive at Earth on 18 May. Region 2823 (S22, L=329, class/area=Cso/40 on 12 May) was quiet throughout the period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm levels between 1200-1800 UTC on 12 May due to effects from the 09 May CME. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 15 May, and quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the week. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 May - 12 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 19-24 May. Normal to moderate flux levels are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 17 May due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Active conditions to G1 (Minor) storm levels are expected on 18 May due to continued CH HSS influence and the effects of the 13 May CME. Active conditions are expected on 19 May due to diminishing CH HSS influence and CME effects. Predominately quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules

 

Hello friends

Shortwave Radiogram received some publicity on the May 7th edition of Amateur Radio Newsline. The audio and text are available here and the video version here. Thanks to Benn Kobb, AK4AV, for presenting the report.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 203) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), Frigid in Virginia (Saturday 1330 UTC), and kurma10goo in Japan (the MFSK32 segment Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend we will again demonstrate text transmission in a language other than English. It will be Spanish, so less complex (to our eyes) than the Khmer and Burmese we tried a few weeks ago. But there are diacritics (accent marks). These require the UTF-8 character set, which is default in Fldigi and TIVAR. If for some reason the diacritics do not display correctly, copy what you do decode in the Fldigi receive pane to a word process, and they might be correct there. ¿No hablas español? A link to an English version of the VOA story is also provided.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. 

If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. 76 Years since Battle for Czech Radio sparked Prague uprising

 

May 5 marks the 76th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle for Czech Radio which is traditionally seen as the start of the Prague Uprising that led to the city being liberated from German control after four days of hard fighting in the closing phase of World War Two in Europe.

At the beginning of May 1945 the supposedly 1,000 year Third Reich was in its last spasms. Adolf Hitler had already shot himself and much of Germany was overrun by the Allies. However, there was still a large army group stationed in Bohemia fighting the Americans advancing into Bohemian territory from the West and the Soviets who were coming from the East. Prague was still occupied by the Germans.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 - 09 May 2021

Solar activity was at very low to moderate levels. Region 2822 (N18, L=335, class/area Dsi/180 on 09 May) rotated onto the visible disk on 07 May and produced an M3/1n flare at 07/1904 UTC. Associated with this flare were type II (816 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps as
well as a non-Earth directed CME. C-class flares were observed on 08-09 May, including a long duration C2/Sf flare at 09/1449 UTC with an associated Type II (407 km/s) radio sweep and another CME beginning at 09/1436 UTC in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery. A faint,
partial-halo CME was also observed on 09 May associated with a 15 degree filament eruption centered near S22E10. The CME was first observed in C2 imagery beginning at 09/1124 UTC. The two CMEs from 09 May are being analyzed at the time of this report with the
potential for at least one having an Earth-directed component. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels through the period. 

Solar wind parameters were weakly enhanced on 03-05 May under a positive polarity CH HSS. Solar wind speed increased to a maximum of 498 km/s at 03/2351 UTC while the total field reached a maximum of 13 nT at 03/0500 UTC. The Bz component was mostly positive during this time r esulting in quiet conditions. By midday on 05 May, the solar wind speed had decreased to under 350 km/s and remained so through 09 May. Quiet conditions were observed for the rest of the period. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 May - 05 June 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low with the chance for further M-class flares on 10-19 May as Region 2822 rotates across the visible disk. Very low to low levels are expected on 20-27 May with the return of old Region 2821 (S21, L=226). Very low levels are expected o n 28 May-01 Jun. Very low to low levels are expected again on 02-05 Jun as Region 2822 rotates around the east limb. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 16-19 May and again on 21-24 May due to recurrent CH HSS influences. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 10, 12-13, 15-18, 20-21 May. Active levels are expected on 15-17 and 20 May and G1 (Minor) storm levels are likely on 16 May due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

Some more Jim Perkins gives way to part of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto, and three songs from Schubert's Winterreiser.

Another short piece by Perkins called Thaw, some more of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, and Serenade for String Orchestra composed by Elgar finish the Program.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 April - 02 May 2021

Solar activity was reached low levels on 26 Apr. A C1 flare from Region 2816 (S24, L=262, class/area Dai/120 on 19 Apr) at 26/0230 UTC was the largest of the period. A DSF was also observed on 26 Apr, lifting off around 26/1635 UTC. Most of the ejecta appears to have been headed to the SW of Earth 's orbit, though the lack of available STEREO-A coronagraph imagery increased uncertainty around determining if an Earth-directed component was present. All of the other active regions were in decay and mostly quiet as they rotated towards the western limb. Only low-level B-class activity was observed over 27 Apr - 02 May. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was mostly normal to moderate with the exception of a brief high level (peak flux of 1,810 pfu reached at 30/1550 UTC) reached on 30 Apr. Geomagnetic field activity range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 (Minor) levels were observed on 26 Apr in response to enhancements from a CME that left the Sun on 22 Apr. Total magnetic field strength was weakly enhanced reaching 7 nT while Bz was sustained southward to -7 nT. Solar wind speeds were steadily elevated to speeds between ~480-500 km/s prior to the G1 event. Geomagnetic conditions would decrease to quiet - unsettled levels on 27 Apr and into quiet over 28 Apr - 01 May as solar wind parameters returned to nominal levels. A slight increase to unsettled conditions was observed on 02 May due to what appears to be influenced from the current sheet with a possible embedded weak transient. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 May - 29 May 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels from 03-13 May and 25-29 May. High levels are likely on 14-24 May in response to multiple, recurrent, negative polarity CH HSSs. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 13 May are likely to increase to G2 (Moderate) levels on 14 May. Active conditions are likely on 03-04 May, 12 May, 15-17 May and 20 May. Unsettled levels are likely on 05 May, 11 May, and 21 May. All anticipated elevations in geomagnetic activity are in response to influence from recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to at quiet levels.
