Starts with Os Justi by Anton Bruckner, 'Venus' from the Planets Suite by Holst, and an unusual arrangement of Vivaldi's Concerto for two Mandolins in G Major.
After that, the first movement, allegro con brio, from Beethoven's Op. 11 Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello, followed by 'Song of Hope' by Howard Goodall.
The programme ends with a movement from the String Quartet No. 2 by Erich Korngold, and part of the Piano Concerto in B-Flat Major by Emilie Mayer.

U.K. Propagation Update

Solar activity has continued to decline, leaving us with a solar flux index around 100. The upside is we haven’t had any solar flares and associated coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, to contend with.



Over the last week, we had only one M-class flare and no X-class events. 
The solar flux index declined to 102 on Thursday, 3 September – down from 122 a week ago.

But the Kp index has been firmly in the range of 1 to 2, which bodes well for ionospheric stability.

This has led to maximum usable frequencies, or MUFs, over 3,000km being around 21 to 24MHz. However, FT8 has stretched this up to 28MHz at times.

There have been some good 10m band FT8 openings to South America late in the afternoon. Chile, Brazil, and Argentina were workable during these periods.

DX to be worked this week includes 3W9C from Vietnam; T99PB from Palau; Z68PX in Kosovo; P29YY in Papua New Guinea; HP/WE9G from Panama; D44TWO from Cape Verde; T32AZ from East Kiribati and J38DX and J38LD, operating from Grenada.

V47YA and V47RCX from St Kitts and Nevis will be active from 8 September until the end of the month and KH8WW, in American Samoa, will be on the air on 10-24 September.

Two rare ones to look for are VK0DS from Davis Station and VK0TBC from Casey Station, both in Antarctica. Operations are mostly using SSB and FT8, as time permits. Both stations have been spotted on the FT8 frequencies of the 20, 15 and 10m bands at times.

Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain around the
100 mark. However, the good news is that, barring any flares or CMEs, the Kp index should remain low, perhaps around 2 all week.

The weather remains in a rather unsettled state. However, there are some signs of a transient area of high pressure brushing past the south of the country today, 6 September. This may create a chance of some tropo into the continent.

This could tie in very well with the RSGB 144MHz Trophy and Backpackers Contests, which are taking place today, 6 September. The unsettled pattern returns for the rest of the week and may not provide much help for the RSGB 432MHz UK Activity Contest on Tuesday, 8 September or the RSGB 50MHz UK Activity Contest on Thursday, 10 September.

In occasional bursts of heavier rain, there may be some potential for rain scatter on the GHz bands.

The prospects of meteor scatter remain in the random territory. So it is best to listen just before dawn for the better chances. The solar conditions have not been very dramatic lately with the Kp index staying below 3. However, if it perks up a bit, say above 5, there may be a chance of aurora.

The Sporadic-E season has more or less ended now. The next period to consider checking usually comes at the end of the year and the first week in January, for out-of-season surprise openings.

EME now, and sky noise should remain low during the coming week. Moon declination remains high. The Moon reached perigee, its closest point to Earth, yesterday, 5 September, so path losses remain low.

Royal Beginnings of Radio in Thailand

Jeff: One of the countries in Southeast Asia that is still very active on medium wave is Thailand, and this week, Ray Robinson takes a look back at the royal beginnings of radio in that country.

Ray:  Thanks, Jeff.  The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, shares borders with Myanmar to the west, with Laos to the north and east, with Cambodia to the southeast, and in the extreme south on the Malay Peninsula, with Malaysia.  The current population is around 68 million, of whom 93% are Buddhist, 5% Muslim, and only 1% Christian.  The capital and largest city is Bangkok, which over 11 million people now call home.

During the era of Western imperialism, Siam remained the only country in Southeast Asia to avoid colonisation by European powers.  As an absolute monarchy, Siam joined World War I on the side of the Allies, but in 1932 there was a revolution which resulted in the transition to a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, and the renaming of the country to Thailand.

During World War II, a military dictatorship took over and allied Thailand with the Empire of Japan as part of the Axis powers, but during the Cold War that followed, Thailand became a key ally of the United States and played a major role in countering communism in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Radio broadcasting was introduced to Thailand in 1927 by Prince Purachatra Jayakara, a son of King Rama V.  He was a keen radio experimenter, and, convinced of radio’s potential, he instructed the Post and Telegraph Department to set up an experimental broadcasting service.  Initially, they used a shortwave frequency around 37 metres, with the first test broadcasts being aired in English and French on May 31, 1928, using the call sign HS4PJ, with the ‘PJ’ honoring the Prince, Purachatra Jayakara.  Later, the operating frequency was adjusted to 29.5 metres, and the transmitter was upgraded to 500 watts.



The official inauguration of the public radio broadcasting service took place on February 25, 1930, the Coronation Day of King Rama VII, with the transmission of his speech from the Grand Palace.

At that time, the station had the use of five rooms in the palace, consisting of two small studios where Buddhist sermons were also presented, a larger studio for musical performances (accommodating up to 40 people), a control room, and a reception room.  An antenna was set up on a pole in an adjacent field.

In 1932, the station was relocated to the Post and Telegraph Department, and in addition to using the callsign, it began identifying as ‘Radio Bangkok’.  However, the results on shortwave were unsatisfactory for what they were trying to achieve, probably due to the skip zone, so on July 1, 1936 they moved to medium wave, 320 metres, 937 kHz, using a 1kW transmitter, and the callsign was changed to HS2PJ.

On January 1, 1941, Radio Bangkok was renamed the National Radio Broadcasting Service of Thailand, or, Radio Thailand.  After the 2nd World War, the radio broadcasting facilities were steadily improved.  On September 11, 1951, a 10 kW transmitter was inaugurated, with a 250-watt FM studio-to-transmitter link.  This was the first FM broadcast in Thailand.  Broadcasting was not yet an all-day affair, though.  In the 1950’s and early 60’s, Radio Thailand was only on the air from 6-8am and 6-9pm, with news, documentaries, classical and modern Thai music, and radio dramas.  Here’s an audio clip of a close-down message from 1964:

On December 6, 1965, the transmitter was upgraded to 100 kW, and in 1971, a major new Program Production Center was opened, enabling full-time broadcasting.  Then on May 3, 1982, a new transmitter site with a 1 MW transmitter on 1575 kHz medium wave was inaugurated by Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who actually switched it on himself.

In 1986, Radio Thailand moved to new headquarters once again, this time providing facilities for all of the then five networks of Radio Thailand – two national services for Thai people, one regional service, one foreign language service for foreign audience in the country and in neighboring countries, and an overseas service for both foreign audiences and Thai expats outside the country.

In 1989, commercial broadcasts in English were introduced, and here’s a recording of a newscast on shortwave with two commercials, for Bangkok Airways and for the Taiwanese airline EVA Air.

Early in 1985, the Voice of America expressed interest in establishing a shortwave relay station in Thailand to boost the capacity of its services to Asia and the Pacific.  It was agreed that the station would be located in Udon Thani province in the northeast of the country, and that the facility would be shared jointly by the VoA and Radio Thailand for its overseas service.  The United States agreed to finance the construction of the station, and the transmitter hall looks not unlike an updated version of the VoA station at Greenville, North Carolina.  Inside the building are seven 500 kW transmitters, which have been operational since 1994.  On inauguration day, the facility was ceremoniously sold back to Thailand for 1 Thai Baht.


The Voice of America was the primary operator and coordinated the use of all frequencies by both organizations.  But the VoA shared the transmitters equally with Radio Thailand World Service, which broadcast in English, French, German and nine regional Southeast Asian languages.  This was the sign-off after a broadcast to West Coast North America:

However, the extent of Thailand’s international broadcasts has been steadily reduced in the 2020’s, and the last time it was listed at all in the World Radio TV Handbook was in the 2025 edition.  As far as I can see, the Radio Thailand World Service now operates only on the high-power medium-wave transmitter and online.

But, the country is still very active on medium wave.  The current edition of the WRTH lists some 127 medium wave stations around the country, most with 5, 10, 20 or 25 kW, but there is one 50 kW unit, three 100 kW units (on 549, 621 & 1467 kHz), one 400 kW unit (on 891 kHz), and the aforementioned 1 MW station on 1575 kHz) used by the Radio Thailand World Service and the VoA, so there are still some potentially good logging opportunities.  And then there are the usual plethora of stations on FM, including both the government networks and hundreds of private stations, plus ‘special’ stations of the Royal Thai Air Force, the Royal Thai Army, the Royal Thai Police and the Royal Thai Border Patrol.

Voice of Indonesia Seeks Listener Greetings for RRI’s 81st Anniversary

Throwback Thursday- Japan on Shortwave during the Pacific War

 


Welcome to Throwback Thursday. This week's edition originally broadcast on February 25, 2001        
Currently, half a dozen people associated with Pacific Radio Heritage in New Zealand are conducting long-term research into the fascinating story of radio broadcasting in the areas of the Pacific and Asia during the Pacific War.  This extensive research is uncovering a host of almost forgotten events regarding the radio scene in the Pacific and Asia back in the middle of the last century.




In this edition of Wavescan, we investigate the shortwave radio scene in Japan during the Pacific War.  In subsequent programs at approximately monthly intervals, we will investigate the radio scene in other countries in these areas of Asia and the Pacific, incuding the change of call signs during this same era. 

The first experimental radio broadcast in Japan went on the air from mediumwave station JOAK in Tokyo on March 1, 1925, and a regular radio service commenced just two weeks later.  Five years later, in 1930, the first succesful broadcast on shortwave went on the air from a 20 kw communication transmitter located at Nazaki.

This experimental broadcast was a relay from mediumwave JOAK and it was beamed across the Pacific to Japanese communities in North America and Hawaii.  Reception of these somewhat irregular broadcasts was confirmed with QSL cards, printed in either Japanese or English.

A regular shortwave service was inaugurated on June 1, 1935 using this same 20 kw transmitter at Nazaki, which was on the air under a series of call signs in a three-letter sequence beginning with "JV." Initially this was a one hour daily service in English and Japanese beamed to the same areas across the Pacific.

During the following year, 1936, an additional 50 kw transmitter was installed at Nazaki specifically for broadcast usage.  This unit was on the air under a similar series of three letter call signs beginning with JZ.

As part of an expansion program, a new multi-storeyed building containing studios and offices was opened in Tokyo in May 1939, and two years later a new transmitter site was commissioned at Yamata, quite near to Nazaki.

As part of a fact-finding monitoring tour, NHK Radio Tokyo sent a senior engineer to Australia and Indonesia in September 1940.  During his visit to Sydney, Engineer Chuhei Anazawa contacted the radio magazine "Australasian Radio World" and gained a report of the reception conditions of Radio Tokyo as heard in Australia.  He was in Australia for just a couple of days, and on his return journey he made a similar visit to Batavia in the Dutch East Indies (or Jakarta, Indonesia as we know it today).

At the time when the Pacific War flared up at the end of 1941, Japan was on the air by shortwave with five transmitters at two locations.  These transmitters were two at 20 kw and three at 50 kw, and the two locations were Nazaki and Yamata.

Program output at this time was also increased with the introduction of new services to various parts of Asia and the Pacific, and also with the introduction of new languages.  Three years later, by the end of hostilities, Radio Tokyo was on the air with nearly 33 hours of programming daily in 24 languages. 

The best-known programs at this time were the "Zero Hour" and the broadcasts of Tokyo Rose, both in English.  Radio Tokyo also included Prisoner of War information in the broadcasts directed to Australia and New Zealand.  They also broadcast programs in Japanese for their own armed forces on duty in various areas of the Pacific and Asia.

During this period of three and a half years, the scheduling of shortwave programs from Radio Tokyo was published in Australian radio journals, along with many monitoring reports.  It was also reported that there were many technical interruptions to these transmissions due to the shortage of spare parts and skilled technicians.

Although all shortwave broadcasts from Japan ended in August 1945, yet they were on the air soon afterwards for a period of around three years for the benefit of Japanese prisoners of war in China.  These broadcasts were in two sessions daily, using two transmitters on each occasion, 15 kw and 5 kw.
