Radio Netherlands Program Preview, August 5-11

The State We're In
Jonathan Groubert and his team look at current events from an unexpected perspective.

This week: Transformations

The incredible life story of the philosopher who used to be a bank robber. An India Dalit, or untouchable, talks about how she went from abused, low caste child bride to head of a multi-million dollar corporation. Two women, each from warring tribes in Kenya, tell tales of the great risks they took to help those in need, even those from the other side. A transsexual Australian soccer star switches to the women’s league and causes a massive controversy, but scores a huge political victory. First airing: Saturday 02:00 UTC

Earth Beat
Marnie Chesterton and her team look at the footprint we’re leaving on our planet.

This week: Wireless electricity

A waterless washing machine. Growing a material made from bacteria. We look at great ideas that are just waiting in the wings.
First airing: Friday 03:00 UTC

Stories from South Asia.

This week:

In the 1920s, the small, sleepy village of Ommen in the east of the Netherlands suddenly became the centre of a worldwide theosophical movement called The Order of the Star. While tens of thousands of its followers travelled to Ommen to attend mass rallies, a young Indian man, Jiddu Krishnamurti, very reluctantly took up the role as spiritual leader.

On this week’s South Asia Wired, we travel to Ommen where nothing reminds the visitor of its place in the history of the international theosophical movement.

(There'll be a new edition of the programme on Thursday 11 August)
First airing: Thursday 14:00 UTC

Africa in Progress
Inspiring round-table discussions with guest speakers and in-depth interviews give listeners food for thought.

This week: Yesterday's slaves

Much has been said about the Atlantic slave trade, but little is known about the black slaves, owned by black masters, in Africa itself.

After years of campaigning for their freedom and the right to be heard, the Gando of northern Benin managed to shed their shackles to become pillars of their communities. They're now recognised by Benin as a distinct ethnic group. Many now hold important positions in business and politics.

We speak to sociologist and documentary maker Eric Hahonou about his new film Yesterday's Slaves.
First airing: Monday 18:00 UTC

Commonwealth Story
A selection of winning stories chosen from the large number of entries for the 2010 Commonwealth Short Story Competition.

Armed forces in many countries have 'don't ask, don't tell' policies when it comes to sexual orientation, but not New Zealand. Radio New Zealand’s Mike Gourley introduces us to Lieutenant-Commander Kevin Sanderson - a gay naval officer in the New Zealand Navy - who tells his story.
