Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedule

Hello friends,

In this time of transition from winter to summer (or vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere), reception of Shortwave Radiograms good at some times on some frequencies, and marginal at other times and on other frequencies.  Because many of us are quarantined, this might be a good time to experiment with some modes we don't usually transmit, to see if they can produce a successful text decode in difficult conditions. And, therefore, our first news item will be in the Olivia 16-1000 mode (40 word per minute). The question for us to ponder is whether this slow mode provides better performance than our usual MFSK32 (120 wpm) in challenging reception environments.

Sunday of this weekend brings a change to Summer Time in most of Europe. Note that local times for Shortwave Radiogram may change accordingly. Also on Sunday will be start of the A20 shortwave broadcast frequency season. I am not aware of any changes to Shortwave Radiogram frequencies, except for the Friday 1500-1530 UTC DRM broadcast from WINB Pennsylvania, which will change to 15750 kHz starting 3 April.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 144) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), Scott Haley in Oklahoma (Saturday 0230 UTC), 2010DFS in Japan and Lola sdr in Spain (both Sunday 0800 UTC on 7730 kHz). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in MFSK32, Olivia 16-1000 and MFSK64, with nine MFSK images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 144, 26-29 March 2020, in modes as noted:

 1:48  MFSK32: Program preview
2:59  Olivia 16-1000: Hams to help develop low cost ventilator
9:42  MFSK64: Ford helps produce respiratory equipment*
14:29  This week's images*
28:00  MFSK32: Closing announcements

The Mighty KBC transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 EDT) on 9925 kHz, via Germany. A minute of MFSK is at about 0130 UTC.  Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!

“This Is What We Do. We Keep Stations on the Air No Matter What”

We asked consultant Gary Kline how operations are reacting to the coronavirus impact

BY PAUL MCLANE, March 16, 2020

Technical consultant Gary Kline, who also contributes regularly to Radio World, travels a great deal both domestically and abroad; he is in frequent contact with many radio industry organizations. We asked him what he’s been hearing over the past several days about the impact of COVID-19 around the U.S. radio industry.

BBC could scale back output if hit by coronavirus

BBC director general Tony Hall has told MPs there's a chance that part of its services could be "out of action" for a spell if the corporation's newsrooms suffered an outbreak of coronavirus.

Lord Hall said the BBC is "intent on keeping absolutely everything open".

Asked whether there could be a scaling back of services, he replied: "There could be - I hope there won't be."

Executives are "working through how we could cope with" a service being out of action, he added.

He said they are looking at how to ensure "we can keep broadcasting the information that the people need to have", but that the BBC is "gaming out" what would happen if many staff go sick.

"You could imagine a local station or some other part of our news operation being out of action for a period."

U.S. Radio Operations Adjust to Coronavirus

Windscreens, audio codecs in demand as industry goes remote

BY PAUL MCLANE

Paper towels and fresh bread are not the only things in demand right now. Add microphone windscreens and remote codecs to the list, at least for U.S. radio stations dealing with the new reality of COVID-19 prevention.

Radio groups are setting up teleworking arrangements, canceling events and turning away prizewinners from their lobbies.

Demand has increased for equipment that supports remote audio operation, according to companies that make codecs including Comrex and Tieline. Similarly, equipment distributor SCMS reports, “We have shipped tons of windscreens but also many portable studio kits to major groups using the Rode Rodecaster,” according to President Bob Cauthen. “I think they are all preparing for the worst but hoping for the best!”

Tape Manufacturer Launches Mystik Cassette Player

Taking a cue from the vinyl resurgence, analog tape manufacturer RecordingTheMasters floats Mystik new cassette player on Kickstarter

BY PRO SOUND NEWS

Cassette tapes sales are back in fashion, with sales reportedly at their highest in more than 15 years, with annual growth outpacing even vinyl’s resurgence. To celebrate, tape manufacturer RecordingTheMasters is launching a Kickstarter campaign for a new portable cassette player, Mystik.

As all analog music formats continue to rise in popularity, cassette tapes now outpace all other formats — including vinyl — in consumer-market growth, more than quadrupling since 2011. Artists including Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Eminem, Jack White, Taylor Swift, Jay-Z and others have all released recent albums on cassette. This year’s recent Cassette Store Day saw RecordingTheMasters partner with New York-based Dala Records for a limited-edition mixtape

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

Hello friends,

Here in North America, now that the transition to Daylight Savings (summer) Time is complete, there are some additional changes to the Shortwave Radiogram schedule. The schedule for WINB on 9265 kHz stays with Eastern local time, so Shortwave Radiogram on 9265 is now one hour earlier by UTC. But WINB on 13690 kHz DRM stays with UTC year-round, so local time will be an hour later by UTC. I suspect the 13690 frequency will change with the new shortwave broadcast frequency  starting March 29; I will let you know.

As for WRMI, its schedule on frequencies used for Shortwave Radiogram stays with UTC throughout the year, so Shortwave Radiogram via WRMI will be one hour later by local time where Daylight Savings Time is observed. There will be no frequency changes at the end of March, but one of the 15770 kHz shows (I don't know which one yet) will be dropped because of a new WRMI client.

Spring (or fall depending on your Hemisphere) brings new shortwave propagation opportunities. For example, Last weekend I heard the Saturday 0330-0400 UTC broadcast on 9265 kHz from WINB Pennsylvania via an SDR in New Zealand. This weekend, the time for that transmission changes to 0230-0300 UTC, but the reception conditions should remain interesting. See also (links below) videos of amazing reception at 0800 UTC.

I often cannot stay awake for the Saturday 0230-0300 UTC transmission. For this reason, I've asked Mitch Plehn @Plano26 to moderate the @SWRadiogram Twitter account during this broadcast. Mitch lives in Arizona, where it is at the more civilized local (MDT) time of 8:30 pm.

Down Under Special Event slated for March 14-15

Australia
Down Under Special Event will Use Former Radio Australia Antennas

Over the March 14–15 weekend, members of the Shepparton and District Amateur Radio Club (SADARC) in Australia will be on the air as VI3RA (Radio Australia) connecting their transceivers to the curtain array and rhombic antennas at the former Radio Australia site in Shepparton. Radio Australia ceased transmitting from the site in 2017.

VI3RA will operate on 40, 30, 20, 17 and 15 meters. "Local amateurs will be given the unique opportunity to explore the use of high gain antennas whilst giving amateurs throughout the world a unique opportunity to contact a station using such high-gain antennas", said SADARC President Peter Rentsch, VK3FPSR. "This is a rare opportunity for amateur radio operators, who are only allowed a peak output power of 400 W in Australia when compared to 100 kW of Radio Australia transmitters to hopefully achieve some remarkable communication outcomes.

"We expect to get a gain of 15 dB on the lower frequencies and at least 20 dB on 21 MHz". The special event is being conducted in cooperation with BAI Communications. (Broadcast Australia via DX Mix-Bulgaria)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 02 - 08 March 2020

Solar activity was very low. A new spot group emerged in the SE quadrant on 07 Mar and was numbered Region 2758 (S29, L=229, class/area Cro/020 on 08 Mar). No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the reporting period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels with a peak flux of 923 pfu observed at 02/1455 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled levels. Solar wind parameters were slightly enhanced midday on 02 Mar as solar wind speed reached a peak of 488 km/s at 02/1318 UTC, are likely due to a connection with an extension off the southern crown, polar coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind speed gradually diminished to nominal levels by 04 Mar. The geomagnetic field responded with mostly quiet conditions with an isolated unsettled period observed on 04 Mar.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 09 March - 04 April 2020

Solar activity is expected to continue at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 19-21 Mar due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be reach unsettled levels on 10-11, 18-20, 27-28 Mar and active levels on 19 and 27 Mar due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Mostly quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

2020 Teak International Air Show Guide is Now Available for Purchase

Every year, from March through November, millions of people hit the road to watch the excitement and thrills as military and civilian flight demonstration teams put their high-performance aircraft through the paces to entertain the crowds and perform at air shows all over the world. Anyone who has attended one of these events will tell you it is thrilling to watch the close quarter flying of the Blue Angels delta formation or the hair-splitting maneuvers of the Thunderbird opposing solos.
While attending the show and enjoying the sights and sounds is an exciting experience that is only half the fun. You can add another whole dimension to that visual experience by monitoring the performing teams’ radio communications.
With a radio scanner in hand, you will experience a whole new perspective of the show that few of the attendees will ever experience – pilot audio from the aircraft cockpit. While everyone else at the air show is just watching and listening to the public address system narrator, you’ll be able to hear what’s happening inside the cockpit, up in the tower and on the ground with the hundreds of players that keep these screaming, state-of-the-art air machines thundering through the skies.
But you can’t tell the players without a program, and to indulge in the craft of monitoring the air show experience you need a current and well-researched list of frequencies that the various performers may use during their performances.
In our new annual Teak Publishing International Air Show Guide eBook, 21st Edition, former Monitoring Times Editor and TSM Milcom columnist Larry Van Horn - N5FPW, delivers the hundreds of air and ground frequencies that you will need to monitor the action when you are within receiving distance of any air show this year.
From the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds, military parachute and search and rescue demonstration teams, to a wide variety of other military and civilian demonstration teams from the U.S. and abroad, Larry has the list of frequencies each unit has used. Now you can bring the excitement you see at the show to your ears. Listening to the nonstop action at the air show on dozens of radio frequencies is part of the real fun of being there.
But wait, there’s more! Larry also has a chapter on tips for enjoying a great day at the air show. You will also get frequency lists for other possible frequencies that may be used at the air show including DoD Intra-Squad Radio frequencies and hosting site aero and LMR frequencies/call signs. We also include in this eBook up-to-date air show frequency listings for overseas military and civilian aeronautical demonstrations teams.
Finally, you will get the latest air show schedules for the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the Army Golden Knight Parachute Teams and more. We include the latest air traffic control frequencies and selected LMR trunk radio systems for each facility hosting or associated with a show when known.
This is the 21st annual edition of this popular frequency monitoring guide published by the author in either Monitoring Times magazine, The Spectrum Monitor e-zine, or by Teak Publishing in eBook form. This edition of the Teak Publishing Air Show Guide is the most comprehensive collection of air show information and frequencies ever published for the radio listening hobbyist.
The 2020 Teak International Air Show Guide is now available for purchase worldwide from Amazon.com at https://www.amazon.com/Teak-International-Air-Show-Guide-ebook/dp/B085FV1LCN/The price for this fourth e-Book the edition is still only US$3.99.
