Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

Hello friends,

The word "blustery" was created for days like we are having today in the Washington DC area. It's below freezing with gusts that shakes the house. At least my wire antennas are still in the air. And I hope electricity is not interrupted until I finish this email. They say we might get some snow on Sunday, which would be a scenic break from our extended snow drought.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 188) are provided by Francisco in Brazil (excerpt of TIVAR reception, Friday 0330 UTC) and by Scott in Ontario (Saturday 0330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany. Also see Roger's explanation of the interesting images created by my multipath reception last weekend via an SDR in New Zealand (47 ms difference between the short path and long path).

This weekend we will add a brief segment of Olivia 32-2000 to our usual MFSK32 and MFSK64. The Olivia 32-2000 might survive adverse conditions such as the OTH radar interference I have been hearing lately via SDRs in Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz). Hint: Do not use the Fldigi squelch (SQL) during Olivia 32-2000 reception. The show will also include eight MFSK64 images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 189,  29-31 January 2021, in modes as noted:

 1:46  MFSK32: Program preview
2:53  Laser link could test of Einstein's theory
6:51  Olivia 32-2000: Laser story continues
9:13  MFSK64: Telescope on the far side of the moon*
15:06  This week's images*
27:34  MFSK32: Closing announcements

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Thursdays 0000 UTC (Wednesdays 7 pm EST) on 3536 kHz USB.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 - 24 January 2021

Solar activity was at low and very levels for the highlight period. Other than 19-20 Jan, solar activity was very low with minimal B-level or below x-ray enhancements. Region 2797 (S17, L=335, class/area Cao/120 on 19 Jan) produced a C1 event on 19 Jan. Region
2798 (S16, L=331, class/area Cao/060 on 20 Jan) produced a C1.4/sf flare on 20 Jan. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit remained at moderate levels throught the highlight period.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet throughout the period, except for 19-20 Jan. A single period of unsettled conditions was observed on both 19 and 20 Jan due to a solar sector boundary crossing (SSBC) as well as weak CH HSS activity.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity - 25 January - 20 February 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled levels on 25-26 Jan, 1-2 Feb, 7-8 Feb, and 20 Feb, due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules

Hello friends,

Here in the Washington DC area, Inauguration Day (January 20) passed without incident. I monitored the local 2-meter repeaters for "situation" reports, but, fortunately, there were no situations to report.

Last weekend's reception provided more adventures in winter (or summer, depending on your location) propagation. Al in northern Florida has been experiencing multipath reception, resulting in some artistically enhanced images. These are from the Friday 1300-1330 show, 15770 kHz from  WRMI in southern Florida ...

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 187) are provided by Vlady in Bulgaria (also with Bulgarian description) and by Scott in Ontario (both Saturday 1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eleven images (1 x MFSK32 and 10 x MFSK64).

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 188, 22-24 January 2021, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:37  MFSK32: Program preview
 2:42  Proposed human-populated mega-satellite orbiting Ceres*
7:39  MFSK64: Quantum communication network with drone help
10:39  Images of the week*
27:54  MFSK32: Closing announcements

“This is a Music Show” Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) .

You do not need Flmsg to check-in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg.

Thanks for your reception reports!

AWR Wavescan announces QSL preservation initiative

Dear Radio Listener,

At the present time, several well-known radio monitors in North America have indicated on the internet their concern as to what will happen with their valuable collection of QSL cards and letters.  We here at AWR Wavescan in Indianapolis have given consideration to this matter and we have a suggestion to offer.

For those who would like to do so, you can send large and small collections of QSL cards and letters to our address in Indianapolis.  We will accept them, and maintain them in safe storage until things settle down after the virus pandemic.

It is our intent that we will then secure a suitable public location where all of the stored QSL collections will then be open to the public for display and research.

Currently, we are already holding around 100,000 QSL cards and letters and paper radio items, and all additional items that we receive will join the current collection for a permanent suitable public location.

Thank you,

AMP.

QSLing Tips for Ecuador and Germany

From the January issue of BDXC- DX News-Shortwave, Dave Kenny reports the following:

Ecuador
Like last winter, we are broadcasting the DX program from Horst Wiese, from the working group Radio HCJB eV Germany (Vozandes Media, Ecuador). Broadcast times are on Saturday at 0400-0500 UTC on 6050 kHz.

Please send reception reports to deutsche@andeanstimme.org. Unfortunately, the Ecuadorian state stopped the mail three months ago - a 179-year-old state company. No investor was found to take over
the ailing institution.

Therefore, we can only confirm by email or post (QSL scanned) from Germany. A QSL response directly from Ecuador would cost 90 U.S. dollars.
Kind regards from Ecuador
Horst Rosiak

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 20-22 Jan due to recurrent CH HSS influences. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 17-20 Jan and 01-02 Feb due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Unsettled levels are expected on 11 Jan and 25-26 Jan. Quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

This week's program starts with piano music from Alexander Scriabin followed by some fifteenth-century polyphony. The piece España next - by a Frenchman - Emmanuel Chabrier who composed it after holidaying in Spain.

Then the Emerson Quartet play Schumann, and the Royal Concertgebouw follow up with part of a Strauss Oboe concerto that he composed in his eighties after WWll.
A song next - the aria Depuis de Jour from the opera Louise by Charpentier. We end with some more woodwind - part of Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 2.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, January 9-10

Hello friends,

I hope 2021 is off to a good start good, safe, and healthy start for you and yours.  Mine is off to a good start because I remembered not to type "2020" -- at least so far.

Last week's program offered the usual mix of good reception, bad reception, and a surprising reception. You can keep track of the fun in real-time or after the fact by following the @SWRadiogram Twitter account. Or if you prefer not to sign up for Twitter, point your browser to https://twitter.com/swradiogram and scroll down.

One example of an interesting reception last week is this image from the Saturday 1330 UTC show by way of a very echoey (multipath) signal to an SDR in Maryland. In fact, the signal was so multipath that the image header would not decode, so I had to "graft" a good header from the studio recording. The result is an artistic rendition full of ghosts ...

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 185) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz, because Scott did not have good reception on his usual 15770 kHz) and by Frigid RF in Virginia (Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in our usual  MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eleven MFSK64 images. There is also a surprise mode -- with RSID to help you identify it -- under the closing music.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 186,  8-10 January 2021, in modes as noted:

 1:38  MFSK32: Program preview
2:44  New design for rechargeable zinc-air batteries
6:32  MFSK64: Methane-based fuel for return trips from Mars
 9:06  This week's images
27:05  MFSK32: Closing announcements
27:57  Surprise mode under music

Please send reception reports to radiogram@verizon.net

Twitter: @SWRadiogram: @SWRadiogram or https://twitter.com/swradiogram (visit during the weekend to see listeners' results)

The Mighty KBC will be a rerun this weekend, without the usual MFSK. Normally it transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 7-9 pm EST) on 5960 kHz, via Germany. Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.

Also look for a waterfall ID at the beginning of the show. thisisamusicshow@gmail.comwww.twitter.com/ThisIsAMusicSho/ @ThisIsAMusicShow

Thanks for your reception reports!
