DX legend Ivo Ivanov: Even on the Internet, tell about Bulgaria!

Regular shortwave broadcasts of Radio Sofia's program to foreign countries—now Radio Bulgaria—began in April 1936. The number of languages broadcast varied, the frequencies shifted, radio exchanges with other radio stations began and ended, broadcasts to foreign countries were interrupted and then resumed, but the voices of the best translators and announcers continued to reach the most remote corners of the world, telling stories about our small but beautiful Bulgaria.

Since 1974, they have been reaching listeners via the Pydarsko Radio Transmitting Center near Plovdiv, which by the late 1980s was operating with a transmitting power of over 175,000 kilowatts, becoming the most powerful radio transmitting station in Bulgaria. It also featured a PA A30-31 rotating antenna system, unique in our country, with the ability to select the direction of the radiation.

From Short Waves to Global Reach

Radio Bulgaria's journey began under the moniker Radio Elza, marking the country's strategic move into the realm of international broadcasting. The initiative was propelled by the recognition of radio's potential to cross borders, connecting Bulgaria with distant lands and cultures. Over the decades, the service expanded its linguistic repertoire to include Bulgarian, French, English, German, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Greek, Serbian, Albanian, and Romanian. This multilingual approach has not only showcased Bulgaria's rich cultural heritage but has also facilitated a dialogue with the world, fostering understanding and friendship between nations.

The dedication to providing genuine and pure news has been the cornerstone of Radio Bulgaria's operation. The journalists, although not widely known in their own country, display an unwavering commitment to their international listeners. Their efforts ensure that the essence of Bulgarian society, politics, and culture is conveyed accurately and thoughtfully to a diverse audience.

Radio Bulgaria to resume its audio broadcast

Radio Bulgaria needs to resume its sound presence and we are to work together with the team, in order to build a firm concept in this direction." This was what BNR Director General Andon Baltakov said in his first interview with Radio Bulgaria.

On the eve of Radio Bulgaria's 84th anniversary, which was celebrated on February 16, 2020, Mr. Baltakov said that broadcasts of the National Radio aimed for foreign countries would be  modernized, but would preserve their philosophy - being Bulgaria's window to the world and vice versa.

Radio Bulgaria slated to leave shortwave January 31

Dear listeners and friends of the short waves and Radio Bulgaria, With a huge regret to inform you very bad news. After more than 75 years in the world broadcasting from January 31, 2012 at 2200UT Radio Bulgaria cease broadcasting on short and medium waves. The solution is that Radio Bulgaria is not necessary now its short waves and medium waves listeners. The reason -no money for broadcast on short and medium waves. And who listens to short waves today? Already has internet. Maintaining the short waves was "Mission Impossible"! Hope dies last. As a frequency manager in the last 19 years my main task was to provide best quality signal of Radio Bulgaria in worldwide coverage. There will be no short waves, there will be no frequency manager.
For all people who work in Radio Bulgaria that bad news is shock and horror Beginning of the end. But expect your moral support.

Friday at 21.00 UTC on 5900 and 7400 kHz beamed to West Europe, at 23.00 UTC and Saturday at 02.00 UTC on 9700 and 11700 kHz to North America, as well as in the half-hour broadcast at 06.30 UTC on 9600 and 11600 kHz to West Europe.

Tajikistan. Tajik Radio was heard in Sofia with a weak signal in English at 13.45 hours on 7245 kHz with a political commentary on Pakistan and Afghanistan. This is the only broadcast in English from this country – from 13 to 14 hours. Tajik Radio is received regularly with a local program after 16 hours on 4765 kHz.

Caucasus. Abkhaz Radio from Soukhimi has appeared again on the frequency of 9535 kHz and was heard at 07.30 hours in a local language and at 08 hours in Russian. The station can possibly have other programs but until 05 hours the frequency was occupied by Radio Exterior de Espana and from 05 to 07 hours by Radio Algeria.
