Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 19 - 25 July 2021

Solar activity was very low on 22 and 25 July with only B-class flares observed. Low levels of solar activity were observed on 19-21, and 23-24 July due to C-class flare activity. A total of six C-flares were observed this period, five C1 flares and a C4 flare at 24/0033 UTC. Regions 2845 (S15, L=195, class/area=Dso/60 on 21 July) and 2849 (S18, L=058, class/area=Axx/20 on 22 July) were the primary producers of C-class flare activity this period. A slow-moving CME was observed on 25 July from the vicinity of plage region 2848 (N21, L=120 on 25 July) may disrupt the near-Earth solar wind environment on 29 July. Multiple other CMEs were observed in LASCO coronagraph imagery throughout the week, however, none were Earth-directed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached unsettled and active levels on 22 July due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 19-20 July, and quiet levels were observed on 21 and 23-25 July under a nominal solar wind regime.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 26 July - 21 August 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low-to-low throughout the outlook period with B-class flares expected and a chance for C-class flares.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 28-29 July due to positive polarity CH HSS influence and the possible glancing blow of a CME from 25 July. Active conditions are expected on 10 Aug, with unsettled conditions expected on 11 Aug, due to recurrent negative polarity CH HSS influence. Unsettled conditions are expected on 16-17 Aug due to recurrent positive polarity CH HSS influence. Mostly quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Radio Free Asia features Tokyo Olympic QSL

With the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, set to begin Friday, July 23, don't forget Radio Free Asia is offering a special Olympic QSL, until the end of August.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces its 76th QSL card. This latest design commemorates the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan rescheduled to July 23 – August 8, 2021, due to last year’s global pandemic.

The Games always bring people together from around the world in peace and harmony to respect universal moral principles. This design is an adaptation of RFA’s first panda design originally used for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This updated version of the original design adds the national flag of Japan as it waves in the breeze. This QSL card all valid reception reports from May-August 2021.

RFA’s Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics QSL

Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Tibetan (including Uke, Amdo, and Kham dialects), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in our editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of our target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of our broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest.  More information about RFA, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is always available at www.rfa.org.

RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports.  Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions.  RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener.  RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at http://techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX’ers but also from our general listening audience.

Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl@rfa.org and by mail to:

Texas Radio Shortwave, July and August program line-up

From the July edition of British DX Club, Listening Post column, Alan Roe shares the following:

Texas Radio Shortwave (WRMI/Channel 292)
Texas Radio Shortwave will be facilitating a series of one-hour programs from nine European pirate/unlicensed stations in special programs to be aired via WRMI, USA. Cap’n Ric writes:

“As you can see on the attached schedule, we have a complete lineup of nine stations in nine weeks with widely divergent styles and music. We think that North American listeners are in for a treat as they'll hear two months of programs they may know nothing about and have little chance to hear with propagation conditions like they are.” Cap’n Ric had hoped to do something similar with specials from North American pirates over Channel 292, but unfortunately, none so far have taken up the offer.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, July 16-18

Hello friends

Thanks to everyone who reported on last week's test of gaps and no gaps before the image headers. No prominent pattern emerged during my first look at the results, but I need to do a more systematic analysis.

My usual routine is disrupted this week, so I don't have time to insert experiments this weekend. We will revert to the traditional method of gaps before the image headers

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 212) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and Frigid RF in Virginia (Saturday 1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. An analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 213, 15-18 July 2021, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:41  MFSK32: Program preview
2:46  Small spacecraft can catch up with interstellar objects
8:40  MFSK64: Shipping containers at transonic speeds*

Protests take place across Cuba as the country faces shortages of COVID-19 vaccines and basic necessities

Thousands of Cubans took to the streets in Havana and in other cities to demand vaccines and food on Sunday as the country faces a period of an economic crisis brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic. People criticized President Miguel Díaz-Canel, saying "down with the dictatorship," according to the Miami Herald. In a speech addressing the country, Díaz-Canel blamed the United States for the unrest, according to Reuters.

Cuba sees biggest protests for decades as pandemic adds to woes
Marc Frank, Sarah Marsh
HAVANA, July 11 (Reuters) - Chanting "freedom" and calling for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to step down, thousands of Cubans joined street protests from Havana to Santiago on Sunday in the biggest anti-government demonstrations on the Communist-run island in decades.

The protests erupted amid Cuba's worst economic crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union, its old ally, and a record surge in coronavirus infections, with people voicing anger over shortages of basic goods, curbs on civil liberties, and the authorities' handling of the pandemic.

Thousands took to the streets in various parts of Havana including the historic centre, their shouts of “Diaz-Canel step down” drowning out groups of government supporters waving the Cuban flag and chanting "Fidel."

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 - 11 July 2021

Solar activity was at very low to low levels. Region 2840 (N27, L=034, class/area Bxo/010 on 08 Jul) produced the strongest event of the period, a C7 flare at 09/1050 UTC. A Type II radio sweep, and several other C-class X-ray events, were produced by the region while it was just past the W limb. Region 2835 (S18, L=052, class/area Ekc/770 on 01 Jul) was the largest region of the period, but only produced some low-level C-class activity as it rotated around the SW limb after 06 Jul. The remaining numbered regions on the visible disk were relatively simple and quiet. Of the multiple coronal mass ejections observed during the period, none were determined to have an Earth-directed component.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled. Some extended periods of southward Bz were followed by a few isolated unsettled periods on 05-06 Jul. Another period of unsettled was observed on 10 Jul which may have been caused by weak influence from a positive polarity coronal hole that rapidly decayed as it crossed the central meridian of the Sun. The remainder of the reporting period was quiet.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 12 July - 07 August 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period. There is a chance for elevated activity from old Region 2838 (N24, L=088), Region 2835 (S18, L=068), and Region 2840 (N27, L=045) as they are expected to rotate back onto the visible disk on 16 Jul, 20 Jul, and 21 Jul, respectively.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 12 Jul and from 19 Jul - 07 Aug. High levels, caused by interaction with a negative polarity CH HSS, is likely for 13-18 Jul.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to active levels. A negative polarity CH HSS. that is connected to the southern crown coronal hole. is expected to elevate geomagnetic activity to active levels on 12-14 Jul and unsettled levels on 15-16 Jul. A small, positive polarity CH HSS is likely to cause unsettled conditions on 02 Aug. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 June - 04 July 2021

Solar activity ranged from very low to high levels. Region 2838 (N24W88, class/area Cro/030 on 03 Jul) rapidly emerged near the NW limb on 03 Jul. It produced the strongest event of the period, an impulsive X1/Sn flare (R3 - Strong) at 03/1429 UTC. Associated with the event was a Type II radio sweep (357 km/s) along with low-level radio bursts across several different frequencies. Subsequent coronagraph imagery from SOHO LASCO/C2 showed several different westward CME signatures. The analysis determined all be oriented away from the Sun-Earth line. The region also produced an M2/Sf flare (R1 - Minor) at 03/0717 UTC, an M1/Sf flare (R1) at 03/1702 UTC, and a final M1/Sf flare (R1) at 04/0509 UTC as the region rotated behind the NW limb.

The largest region on the visible disk was Region 2835 (S18W16, class/area Ekc/770 on 01 Jul). The largest flare it produced during the reporting period was a C3 at 30/1815 UTC. The growth of Region 2835 peaked on 01 Jul and has been in gradual decay in the days since. The three remaining numbered active regions were relatively simple and stable or in decay.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the summary period.

Geomagnetic field activity varied from quiet to active levels. Late on 30 Jun, a relatively gradual increase in solar wind parameters was observed which was likely from the transient influence of a CME that left the Sun on 27 Jun. Solar wind speeds increased from the mid 300 km/s to a peak of just over 500 km/s. Total magnetic field strength (Bt) increased to a brief peak of 13 nt early on 01 Jul. Bz reached a maximum southward flux of -9 nT. The following geomagnetic field response was mostly unsettled to active through the later part of 30 Jun. A decline in Bt early on 01 Jul resulted in quiet conditions despite wind speeds being elevated through 03 Jul. The remainder of the summary period was quiet.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 05 July - 31 July 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low to low over the outlook period. There is potential for Region 2838 (N24, L=100), which produced an X1/Sn flare at 03/1429 UTC as it rotated around the NW limb, to increase flare probabilities after 16 Jul if it maintains around the far side and rotates back onto the visible disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from normal to high levels. High levels are likely on 12-14 Jul and 20-23 Jul in response to CH HSS activity. The remainder of the outlook period is likely to be at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to active levels. Active levels are likely on 10 Jul and 18-19 Jul; unsettled levels are likely on 05-06 Jul, 11 Jul, and 20 Jul. All elevated levels on geomagnetic activity are in response to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels.

Overcomer Ministries 9395 kHz, 1802-1822. Statler Brothers tune There's a Man in There. Scripture readings to 1807. Just as I Am song to Glory Glory Hallejiah instrumental. Brother Stair sermons sounding considerably younger in age. Very good SIO 444 signal. SIO 434. (Airspy/NC)  http://www.overcomerministry.org

Radio Marti 11930 kHz, 1935-1945. Male/female's Spanish text and talk about Nicaragua and Venezuela. Good SIO 434 making it through the Cuban jammer on this frequency. (Airspy/NC)  http://www.martinoticias.com Noted on subsequent monitoring 11860 kHz, 1401-1403 UTC with Cuban jamming via 3D imagery at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wsAffyXtJE&t=5s

Voice of Vietnam 1/Buon Ma Thuot 7210 kHz from 1335 tune-in. Lady's Vietnamese to 1339. Lady's musical vocals with accompanying Asian-flute (very nice) to 1347 for lady's text. Good chance I was hearing Voice of Vietnam's AM on 1242 kHz from 1345 UTC. Should be in Lao and sure fits the format. Usual VOV format with Asian music, but still a "tentative" via Haino SDR.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, Thursday-Sunday

Hello friends

Shortwave Radiogram listeners have kindly offered suggestions for experiments with our digital modes. Tobias in Germany suggests that eliminating the brief silence (about 0.6 seconds). between the text introduction of an MFSK image and the image transmission, can reduce or eliminate missed image headers. This is because there is no interval of silence that can result in random characters that might interfere with the header.

On this weekend's Shortwave Radiogram, the silent gaps before the MFSK64 images will be eliminated. The gap will still exist between the text and the MFSK32 image near the beginning of the program.

Also, during most of the five-second delays after the RSID when modes change (to provide time for a manual mode change if necessary), 1500-Hz tones will be inserted instead of silence. This might eliminate the stray characters that can be annoying.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 210) is provided by Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 211, 1-4 July 2021, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:41  MFSK32: Program preview
2:58  Christopher describes the heat wave in Oregon*
7:11  MFSK64: Hot nights hurt rice crop yields
10:51  This week's images* **
28:35  MFSK32: Closing announcements

* With image(s)

** As an experiment, the short silence between the text
introduction and image has been eliminated. This might reduce the
incidence of missed image headers.

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram, and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!
