Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 - 23 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. No sunspots were observed on the visible disk. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available imagery.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 17 Jun with a peak flux of 109 pfu observed at 17/2025 UTC. Normal levels were observed on 18-23 Jun.
Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels with an isolated unsettled period observed for 0600-0900 UTC period on 20 June. Solar wind parameters were at mostly nominal levels through the period. A peak wind speed of near 425 km/s was observed early on 22 Jun. Bt and Bz parameters were at mostly nominal levels.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 June - 20 July 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be moderate to high levels on 25 Jun - 03 Jul in response to the elevated wind speeds associated with recurrent CH HSS activity. Normal levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to isolated active levels on 24-26 Jun, 06 Jul and 10-11 Jul due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, June 21-23
Hello friends,
A prospective Shortwave Radiogram listener sent an email asking about the basic equipment needed to receive and decode the modes. This reminded me of the need to revisit the How to Decode the Modes of the Shortwave Radiogram website.
It would seem all that is needed is a radio and a computer, with a patch cord from the earphone jack of the radio to the microphone jack of the computer. But, nowadays, many computers don't have separate mic jacks. And if a patchcord is plugged into a radio's earphone jack, the speaker is muted. These are just two of the problems that can occur in the decoding chain. So, with your help, I will try to develop new "how to" document.
Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 104) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and by Ralf in Germany (Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.
This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine images.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 105, 20-23 May 2019, in MFSK modes as noted:
1:42 MFSK32: Program preview
2:51 The ghost galaxy that hit the Milky Way long ago*
7:51 MFSK64: Europe's plastics problem*
12:08 Five ways a 'lazy' lawn makes pollinators happy*
16:59 This week's images*
28:33 MFSK32: Closing announcements

The Mighty KBC transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 pm EDT) on 9925 kHz, via Germany. A minute of MFSK is at about 0130 UTC. Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.
“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, 9395 kHz, Thursday 0130-0230 UTC (Wednesday evening in the Americas). New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32 (PA NBEMS is experimenting with Thor 50x1 for messages). Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in.
Thanks for your reception reports!

Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedules
Hello friends,
This weekend our will again be MFSK32 and MFSK64. These modes work very well in shortwave broadcast conditions, with MFSK32 more successful, although slower, if reception is somewhat difficult. Now we need a simple, receive-only, decode-only software for PCs, and app for mobile devices, that decode MFSK 16, 32, 64, and 128 ...
MFSK16 (55 wpm) for difficult conditions
MFSK32 (120 wpm) for fair conditions
MFSK64 (240 wpm) for good conditions
MFSK128 (480 wpm) for excellent conditions (e.g. local FM or medium wave)
The software should be able to decode, and optionally save, both text and images. An RxID would detect which flavor of MFSK is being transmitted and the center audio frequency.
Everything went smoothly last weekend except that the first broadcast of the weekend, Thursday at 2330 UTC, was the previous week's show. This was because of a problem with the automated playout system at WINB.
Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 103) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and Ralf in Germany (Sunday 2330 UTC). Jeff, W5IJH, in Oklahoma also provides a video of his first decode of Shortwave Radiogram (Sunday 2330 UTC). Tengu in Japan produced this video of his decode of a previous Shortwave Radiogram, using one of Ralf's videos. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.
This weekend's show is in MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine images.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 104, 15-16 June 2019, in MFSK modes as noted:
1:59 MFSK32: Program preview
2:47 Pieces of glass can be recycled into concrete*
8:17 MFSK64: Czech brewery rolls out first wastewater beer*
12:18 Michelin and GM unveil airless tires*
15:58 This week's images*
28:33 MFSK32: Closing announcements

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 - 09 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. No sunspots were observed on the visible disk and there was an absence of significant flare activity. A dissapearing solar filament (DSF), centered near S05E52, was observed in GONG optical imagery at 03/0715 UTC but was not observed in LASCO imagery. This CME was believed to have impacted Earth midday on 08 June. An additional DSF, centered near the S05E13, was observed at 07/2145 UTC and is expected to have a possible geoeffective component with an anticipated arrival of 12 June.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 03 June and of moderate levels on 04-08 June in response to elevated wind speeds from a negative polarity, coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The peak electron flux during the reporting period was 2,270 pfu at 03/1755 UTC.
Geomagnetic field activity reached G1 (Minor) storm levels on 08 June and unsettled levels on 09 June as a result of the aforementioned 03 June CME. Quiet conditons were observed throughout the
remainder of the period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 June - 06 July 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 11-13 and 26-30 June, with moderate levels expected on 10, 14-20, 25 June and 01-03 July in response to elevated wind speeds associated with recurrent CH HSS activity.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 12 and 25 June, unsettled levels on 10-11, 13, 24, 26 June and 06 July due to CH HSS influence. Quiet conditions are expected through out the remainder of the outlook period.

AIR India may have to power off shortwave transmissions
Sobhana K. Nair
Prasar Bharati has asked it to come up with a proposal to phase out SW transmitters
If Prasar Bharati has its way, All India Radio will have to stop all global short wave transmissions — eighty years after it began international broadcasting in 1939. AIR is resisting the move arguing that it will curtail its global reach.
There are about 46 short wave transmitters that run both domestic and external services. Out of these, 28 are used for the external services alone. Barring three transmitters that were recently installed, all the others will have to be shut down over the next six-months. The external services are broadcast to 150 countries in 13 Indian languages and 15 foreign languages.
Prasar Bharati had written to the AIR in May third week asking it to come up with a proposal to phase out the short wave transmitters.

North Macedonia, new country listing on medium wave
Recent WRTH frequency updates, have revealed a new medium wave listing, for North Macedonia.
North Macedonia, is a country in the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in September 1991 under the name Republic of Macedonia. The country became a member of the United Nations in April 1993, but as a result of a dispute with Greece over the name "Macedonia", it was admitted under the provisional description the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia[e] (abbreviated as FYR Macedonia and FYROM), a term that was also used by some other international organisations, FIFA for instance. In June 2018, Macedonia and Greece resolved the conflict with an agreement that the country should rename itself Republic of North Macedonia. This renaming came into effect in February 2019.
A landlocked country, North Macedonia has borders with Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west.It constitutes approximately the northern third of the larger geographical region of Macedonia, which also comprises the neighbouring parts of northern Greece and southwestern Bulgaria. The capital and largest city, Skopje, is home to roughly a quarter of the nation's 2.06 million inhabitants. The majority of the residents are ethnic Macedonians, a South Slavic people. Albanians form a significant minority at around 25%, followed by Turks, Romani, Serbs, Bosniaks, Aromanians, and Bulgarians.
