Solar activity reached high levels during the period. Moderate levels were observed on 18 Apr with M1 flares observed from Regions  2987 (N30, L=262, plage) and 2993 (N22, L111, class/area Fkc/600 on 21 Apr). Region 2992 (S28, L=244, class/area Dao/300 on 18 Apr) contributed an M3 flare at 19/2049 UTC. Activity increased to high levels on 20-21 Apr with an M7 flare at 20/0136 UTC from Region 2992. This region also produced an X2 flare at 20/0357 UTC. Associated with the X2 flare was a Tenflare and Type II sweep. Region 2993 produced an M9 flare at 21/0159 UTC. There was a Tenflare, Type II and Type IV sweeps during this event. Region 2993 also managed an M3 flare with a Type II sweep on 22 Apr. Low levels were observed on 23-24 Apr. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 18-20 Apr. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 21-24 Apr.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 23 Apr due to influences from a positive polarity CH HSS. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 18-22 Apr and 24 Apr.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 25 April - 21 May 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at moderate to high levels (R-R2, Minor-Moderate), with a slight chance for very high levels (R3, Strong) on 25-30 Apr and 11-21 May due to the flare potential from
Regions 2993 and 2994. Very low to low activity is expected on 1-10 May.

A slight chance for proton events exists on 25-30 Apr and 11-21 May due to the potential from Regions 2993 and 2994.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 30 Apr - 1 May, 7-9 May, and 14-17 May due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach G1 (Minor) storm levels on 29 Apr due the arrival of a recurrent, negative polarity CH HSS. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 30 Apr, 7-8 May, 14 May, and 20 May all due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 11 - 17 April 2022

Solar activity reached very high levels during the period. Very low to low levels were observed on 11-14 April. Activity increased to moderate levels on 15 April due to a pair of M1 flares R1 (Minor), at 15/1031 UTC and 1359 UTC respectively, from Region 2993 (N21, L=111, class/area Dho/400 on 17 Apr. Moderate levels were observed on 16 Apr with another M1 flare (R1-Minor) at 16/1456 UTC from Region 2993. Activity increased to very high levels on 17 Apr with an X1 (R3-Strong) flare from Region 2994 (N13, L=106, class/area Eho/350 on 17 Apr) at 17/0334 UTC. Associated with this event was a Type II radio Sweep with an estimated shock velocity of 614 km/s. In addition, a Tenflare of 130 sfu was observed. Region 2993 also contributed two M1 flares (R1-Minor). Region 2992 (S31, L=248,
class/area Dao/110 on 17 Apr) produced M-class activity as well on the 17th. The first was an M1/Sf at 17/2002 UTC and an M4/Sf at 17/2234 UTC. Associated with this event was a Type II radio Sweep with a shock velocity of 837 km/s.

No proton events were observed in geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was was at high levels on 11-13 Apr and 16-17 Apr with a peak flux of 2,310 pfu observed at 17/1705 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 14-15 Apr.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to moderate storm levels (G2-Moderate). Quiet to active levels were observed on 11 April due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet to active levels were observed on 12-13 April due to influence from the 07 Apr CME. Unsettled to minor to major storm levels were observed on 14-15 Apr. Minor to major (G1-G2, Minor-Moderate) geomagnetic storm levels were observed on 14 Apr and minor (G1-Minor) storm levels were observed on 15 Apr, all due to influences from the 11 Apr CME. The highlight period finished with quiet to unsettled levels under the effects of a positive polarity CH HSS.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 April - 14 May 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at moderate to high levels (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate), with a slight chance for very high levels (R3, Strong), on 18-30 Apr and 11-14 May due to the flare potential from Regions 2993 and 2994. Very low to low activity is expected from 01-10 May.

A slight chance for proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit is possible on 18-30 Apr and 11-14 May due to the potential from Regions 2993 and 2994.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 18-20, 30 Apr, 01-02, 07-09, and 14 May. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 18-20, 23, 29-30 Apr, 01, 06-08, and 13-14 May, all due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Mostly quiet conditions are anticipated for the remainder of the outlook period.

Shortwave radiogram schedules

Hello friends

The Greek government has decided to delay the decision to eliminate shortwave broadcasting from March 31 or May 31.  To help the Greek government in its decision, last week Shortwave Radiogram transmitted Greek text, as a demonstration of radio as a substitute for an increasingly censored and restricted internet. At the bottom of this email, you can see the Greek text received in Greece by our friend Merkouris.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 249)  are provided by Scott in Ontario and Frigid RF in Virginia (both Friday 1300 UTC), Merkouris in Greece (Saturday 0230 UTC Greek excerpt),  and Mike R. somewhere in the USA (Sunday 2330 UTC excerpt).  (And see the April meeting of the Palomar Amateur Radio Club in California with a demonstration of Fldigi, using Shortwave Radiogram audio.)  The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 252, 14-19 March 2022, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:34  MFSK32: Program preview
2:41  MFSK32: Surprising temperature swings on Neptune*
 7:40  MFSK64: Fiber-optic cables through water pipes

Shortwave radio proves simple, powerful — and necessary

By Ruxandra Obreja
LONDON — The recent events in Ukraine, with its tragedy of human casualties, extensive destruction or disruption of local broadcasting infrastructure, and new levels of censorship of the internet and journalism have brought shortwave broadcasts sharply back into focus, even though, they never stopped — the British Broadcasting Corp. alone has 40 million shortwave listeners worldwide.

Shortwave listening received a boost recently when broadcasters rapidly reinstated shortwave broadcasts to provide information and support to dislocated people and those eager to access uncensored external information in Ukraine and Russia.

My Secret Falkland War documentary scheduled for April 4

Forces TV is promoting a Falklands 40 day on Monday 4 April 2022, which includes a program called "My Secret Falklands War: When Britain's Military Took to the Airwaves" at 20:00 UK

New Falklands conflict documentary reveals the incredible story of top-secret psychological warfare mission
'My Secret Falklands War: When Britain's Military Took To The Airwaves' explores one of Margaret Thatcher's strangest operations.
It is 40 years since the Falklands - a conflict fought between April and June 1982 and which claimed the lives of 255 British service personnel.
While the UK sent a task force to reclaim the Falklands following Argentina's invasion, there was a top-secret operation launched at the same time.

It involved the creation of a radio station as part of a psychological warfare mission – those involved were sworn to secrecy.

•  Events planned to mark 40th anniversary of the Falklands War https://www.forces.net/news/events-planned-mark-40th-anniversary-falklands-war
•  'It's a real war': Veteran remembers Falklands conflict https://www.forces.net/news/its-real-war-veteran-remembers-falklands-conflict

In 'My Secret Falklands War: When Britain's Military Took To The Airwaves', journalist Stewart Purvis, who covered the Falklands conflict in 1982, tells the inside story of one of Margaret Thatcher's most unusual operations to recover the Falklands from occupying Argentinian forces – 'Project Moonshine'.

After he discovered a list of people involved in Project Moonshine from top-secret documents stored in the French Alps, Stewart spent eight years trying to track them down and speak to them. Now is the first time their experiences have been spoken about.

The operation involved the creation of a propaganda radio station, 'Radio Atlantico Del Sur', through which Spanish-speaking UK military personnel tried to persuade their Argentinian counterparts to surrender while broadcasting to the Falklands and Argentina in Spanish.

After much dispute between top civil servants on its potential success, on 19 May 1982, the very first program went out from the UK with a Royal Navy lieutenant and squadron leader speaking in Spanish over the airwaves.
The radio station had two clear aims: to persuade Argentinian personnel to hesitate before firing on British forces; and to persuade them of the merits of surrender.
The station was a mix of news, music, and features – all with a nuanced psychological aim.

Watch 'My Secret Falklands War: When Britain's Military Took To The Airwaves' on Forces TV (Freeview channel 96, Sky channel 181, Virgin channel 274, Freesat channel 165) at 20:00 UK time on Monday 4 April and at the same time on the Forces News YouTube channel, and at 20:10 UK time on BFBS Extra.

BREAKING NEWS - Voice of Greece granted a reprieve - still broadcasting!

Voice of Greece granted a reprieve - still broadcasting!

For two more months.
01 April 2022
The closure of the analog broadcast of the Voice of Greece has been delayed, even temporarily. With a decision taken last Wednesday and signed by ERT CEO George Gabritsos, the public radio and television announced that at the request of the Ministry of Defense, the Avlida shortwave broadcast center will remain active until May 31, when re-evaluating the conditions for the further continuation or not of its operation.

In an earlier decision, ERT had stated that its broadcast on shortwave would end yesterday, March 31, and had addressed the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense "to decide whether they want the continuation of the shortwave broadcasts, as well as the acquisition of ownership and the operation of the shortwave operation at their own risk " .

To further confirm this story, on April 1, Costas Krallis SV1XV, heard the Voice of Greece with the broadcast of an Eastern Orthodox Mass on 9935 kHz at 1655 UTC.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules

Hello friends

As if last weekend were not confusing enough, with the beginning of the A22 shortwave frequency season, and the European time change, we were surprised by some last-minute changes to WRMI's times for Shortwave Radiogram. WRMI now has a customer -- Radio for Peace International, with a program for Ukraine and Russia -- Saturday 1330-1400 UTC on 15770 kHz, displacing Shortwave Radiogram. And a new religious program occupies WRMI's Sunday 0800-0830 slot, so Shortwave Radiogram has been moved to Monday 0800-0830 UTC on 5850 and 7780 kHz. The revised schedule is below.

The WINB DRM transmission of the Shortwave Radiogram was not heard last Friday 1500-1530 UTC on 15750 kHz. We are hopeful that it returns to its normal schedule this Friday.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 249)  are provided by maker mine (location unknown, Thursday 2330 UTC) and Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 250, 31 March-3 April 2022, in MFSK modes as noted:
