The last days of Voice of Greece

Greece

The ERT CEO Giorgos Gambritsos, has signed a decree to close down the shortwave transmitting facility at Avlis from March 31, 2022. The news release by ERT is leaving the possibility of shortwave broadcasts to continue only if the Ministry of Defense and Foreign Ministry decide to oversee the continuation of broadcasts on shortwave. The current schedule of Voice of Greece: v1800-0805 on 9420 AVL 150 kW / 323 deg to WeEu Greek, but not daily, and 0805-1200 is heard very rarely.

Additional story:

Until March 31, 2022, ERT's international programming will continue to operate on shortwave, according to a decision signed by ERT CEO George Gabritsos.
As noted in the document, the reasons for the decision are the "evolution of technology," corresponding decisions by other European broadcasters to phase out shortwave, and the acceleration of the "Internet broadcasting" in the coming months of Voice of Greece and ERT's main news bulletin.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 March 2022

Solar activity reached moderate levels at 25/0526 UTC due to an M1/1f flare from Region 2974 (S18, L=090, class/area Cso/90 on 23 Mar). Type II (estimated shock velocity of 959 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps were observed with this event. A subsequent CME signature was first observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 25/0548 UTC. Analysis and modeling of the CME suggested an Earth-directed component with an anticipated arrival on 27 Mar. Solar activity reached low levels on 22-24 and 26-27 Mar. Very low levels were observed on 21 Mar.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels late on 27 Mar due to positive-polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 22, 24-26 Mar. Quiet conditions prevailed on 21 and 23 Mar.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 March - 23 April 2022

Solar activity is likely to be low, with a slight chance for R1-R2 (Minor-Moderate) radio blackouts, throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 04-07 Apr, with moderate levels expected during the remaining portion of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G1 (Minor) storm levels on 28 Mar due to combined CME and CH HSS effects. Active levels are expected on 03, 20-21 Apr due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Quiet to unsettled levels are anticipated throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

HCJB Deutschland adds programming in Russian

Due to the situation around Ukraine, we have decided to change our programs.

Since March 12th, 2022 we have been broadcasting a Russian program on the frequency 7365 kHz in the 41m band around the clock to the east in cooperation with our partner "Segenswelle".

Our second chairman Viktor Sawatzki, who is also the leader of the Segenswelle, is currently trying to create programs in the Ukrainian language that will complement this program. Viktor and some of his Segenswelle employees and other helpers also did an aid mission last week, bringing food and other donations in kind to Ukraine. (More information on this can be found on the Segenswelle homepage www.segenswelle.de). You can also listen to the program in the stream under the following link http://segenswelle.de:8000/russisch

We would be happy if you would support helpers and programs with your prayers. We are also very grateful for donations to support the broadcasting of programs.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules, March 25-27

Hello friends

This will be complex weekend. On March 27, most of Europe turns clocks ahead for Summer Time. And, the same date, the A22 shortwave frequency season begins.

Most Shortwave Radiogram frequencies stay with UTC, so for most Europeans, the show will be heard one hour later by local time. WINB's 9265 kHz and WRMI's 9955 kHz stay with North American Eastern Time, which moved forward on March 13, so effective March 27 local times will be the same for most Europeans.

Also on March 27, WRMI will swap its 7730 and 7780 kHz frequencies (to avoid interference to aircraft). So as of that date, our Sunday 0800 UTC broadcast will be on 5850 and 7780 kHz. And the Sunday 2330 UTC show will be on 7730 kHz.

The Mighty KBC, Sunday 0000-0200 UTC, will remain on its frequency of 5960 kHz until May 1, when it will change to 9925 kHz. Also, The Mighty KBC will have a special transmission for Europe, Sunday, March 27, 0800-1500 UTC on 6095 kHz from transmitter site Nauen, Germany. (0800-1000 Live from the '60s with The Real Don Steele. 1000-1400 The Classic Hit List with M.G. Kelly. 1400-1500 The Giant Jukebox with Eric van Willegen.) Our minute of MFSK64 will be transmitted at 1430 UTC on 6095 kHz (in addition to the usual 0130 on 5960 kHz). Reception of 6095 kHz will be unlikely in North America, so try SDRs in Europe.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 248) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and Ralf in Germany (Saturday 1330 UTC). See also a video by KD8TTE on HF/MF image transmission. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 249, 24-27 March 2022, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:38  MFSK32: Program preview
2:47  MFSK32: Nestle withdraws brands from Russia (in Russian)*
 8:30  MFSK64: EU-Russia ExoMars mission won't launch in 2022

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 March 2022

Solar activity reached moderate levels on 14-15 Mar due to an M2 flare at 14/0840 UTC, an M1/Sn at 15/1239 UTC and an M1/Sf at 15/2246 UTC all originating from Region 2965 (N23, L=266, class/area Fki/620 on 12 Mar). Low levels were observed on 17 and 19-20 Mar while very low levels occurred on 16 and 18 Mar. Two CMEs were of note with possible Earth-directed components.

The first was an approximate 10 degree filament eruption beginning at 16/1228 UTC centered near N26E23 which produced a CME first visible in LASCO C2 imagery at 16/1347 UTC off the NE limb. Modelling of the event showed a potential glancing blow late on 19 Mar to early on 20 Mar. The second CME of interest was due to a C4/1f flare at 20/0745 UTC from plage region 2971 (N17, L=180, class/area Bxo/020 on 17 Mar).

The eruption produced an EIT darkening in AIA 193 imagery as well as a Type II radio sweep (188 km/s). An associated CME could be seen off the NE limb of LASCO C2 imagery at 20/1100 UTC. Initial modeling shows the potential for a glancing blow late on 23 Mar to early on 24 Mar.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity began under the waning influence of the 10 Mar CME. Total field was initially at 24 nT, but began to diminish after 14/0740 UTC. Solar wind speed declined from approximately 455 km/s to near 425 km/s. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to G2 (Moderate) storm levels on 14 Mar and quiet to unsettled conditions on 15 Mar.

By midday on 16 Mar, solar wind parameters had diminished to nominal levels and maintained those levels through late on 19 Mar. Quiet conditions were observed on 16-19 Mar. By late on 19 Mar, the total field slowly increased to 10 nT along with density to near 20 p/cm^3. A solar sector boundary crossing ensued at 20/1617 UTC. The enhancement as well as the sinusoidal-like rotation of the Bz component during this time could be attributable to the glancing blow from the 16 Mar CME. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 20 Mar. There is a chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares on 23 Mar-05 Apr as old Region 2957 (S16, L=038) returns to the visible disk.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate to high levels on 21-22 Mar and 02-06 Apr due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 21-22 Mar due to potential negative polarity CH HSS influence. Unsettled to active levels are also expected on 23-25 Mar due to a possible glancing blow from the 20 Mar CME combined with a positive polarity CH HSS. Unsettled to active levels are expected once again on 31 Mar - 03 Apr with G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels likely on 01 Apr due to recurrent negative polarity CH HSS activity.

Ukraine's Radio Station of National Resistance

By Nicolas Niarchos

March 18, 2022

Recently, at a closed ski resort in Ukraine’s Carpathian Mountains, Roman Davydov leaned into a microphone and announced the latest news from the war. Kryvyi Rih, in southern Ukraine, was being attacked; a U.S. journalist had been shot; and the British Foreign Secretary had announced new sanctions on Russian oligarchs in London. Davydov, who is forty-three, with dark hair and an oft-furrowed brow, is the voice of Kraina FM, an independent radio station that, after the Russian bombing began in Kyiv, relocated to an undisclosed location. (The staff of Kraina FM asked me not to identify the village, for security reasons.) Outside Davydov’s improvised booth, a corner office lent to Kraina FM by a local accountant, an odd sense of normalcy reigned. Beyond the ski-rental shop, where a cluster of sandbags had been piled, a man in a blue jacket and ski goggles operated a small lift for a children’s slope in the bright sunshine.

Vatican Radio to increase broadcasts to Ukraine and Russia

From Monday, 21 March 2022, Vatican Radio will increase its shortwave broadcasts to Ukraine and Russia. In addition to the two daily broadcasts (afternoon and evening) in the two languages, the morning programs to Moscow and Kyiv will last twenty minutes longer.

"The decision,” Massimiliano Menichetti, head of Vatican Radio Vatican News explains, “was taken with the agreement of the entire management team of the Dicastery for Communication, at this time when war is raging, in order to better respond to our mission: to bring hope, the Pope's words and the reading of facts through the light of the Gospel to the whole world.”

In these past weeks, he added, thanks to a network of direct contacts that support the work of our reporters, we are trying to give comfort to those who are suffering and to ensure timely information.

The frequencies of Vatican Radio, the pages and posts of Vatican News in 51 languages (including English and Italian in sign language) aim to not leave anyone alone, even in the awareness of the power of prayer".

Weekend schedule for Shortwave Radiogram

Hello friends

This weekend, in North America, the transition to Daylight Savings Time is complete. Political sentiment in North America is in favor of year-round Daylight Time. This would end these confusing weekends. (Although I would prefer year-round standard time.)

All of the WRMI frequencies except 9955 kHz stay with UTC, so most WRMI transmissions of Shortwave Radiogram will be one hour later by local time for most North Americans. WRMI's 9955 kHz stays with Eastern Time, so the Tuesday transmission is at 1430 UTC. WINB on 9265 kHz stays with Eastern Time, so those transmissions are one hour earlier UTC, i.e. Thursday 2330 and Saturday 0230 UTC. And for the last bit of confusion, WINB's DRM frequency stays with UTC. That frequency is now 15750: I think it will stay the same but have not yet received confirmation of that. You might have to tune around to find it. The updated schedule is below.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 247) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), PDXh0b0 Shack in Washington state (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz), and Mike R. somewhere in the USA (Sunday 2330 UTC excerpt). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 248, 17-20 March 2022, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:37  MFSK32: Program preview
2:44  MFSK32: Too many satellites in low-Earth orbit?
7:02  MFSK64: Radio Exterior de España cumple 80 años* (in Spanish)
12:04  MFSK64: This week's images*
28:08  MFSK32: Closing announcements

* with image(s)

Note: For the Thursday 2330 UTC, the preview is erroneously listed as program 249, and the program segment times are not specified ("XX:XX"). I hope this will be fixed in the WINB Saturday 0230 UTC broadcast. It will be correct in the WRMI transmissions.

Shortwave Radio Signal From Florida Cow Pasture Reaches Russia Carrying Latest News

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A massive shortwave radio antenna sits in a cow pasture north of Lake Okeechobee in Central Florida.

“We have 14, 100,000-watt transmitters and 23 antennas beaming to all parts of the world,” said Jeff White, the general manager of Miami-based WRMI.

The multi-signal station is said to be one of the largest shortwave radio operations in the world.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 - 13 March 2022

Solar activity was at low levels most of the period with the exception of 11 Mar when it reached moderate levels due to an M2/Sf flare at 11/2232 UTC from Region 2964 (S28, L=012, class/area Dso/070 on 10 Mar). Associated with the M2 flare was a CME off the SW limb beginning at 12/0000 UTC in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery. WSA-Enlil analysis showed no Earth-directed component. Two other CMEs had Earth-directed components, however. The first was on 06 Mar that began as a filament eruption in the NE quadrant centered near N15W35 beginning at 06/2252 UTC. A subsequent CME was observed off the NW limb beginning at 07/0000 UTC. WSA-Enlil analysis showed a glancing blow arrival late on 10 Mar. The second was associated with a long duration C2 flare at 10/2045 UTC near Region 2962 (N26, L=324, Cro/030 on 06 Mar). A partial halo CME was observed from that event beginning at 10/1912 UTC. WSA-Enlil analysis showed an impact arrival around late on 13 Mar.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. A proton enhancement of the greater than 10 MeV protons to 2 pfu was observed at 11/0720 UTC likely associated with the long duration C2 flare at 10/2045 UTC.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 07-10 March with a peak of 10,194 pfu observed at 07/1525 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 11-13 Mar. Geomagnetic field activity began under waning negative polarity CH HSS conditions. Solar wind speed decreased from approximately 500 km/s to at or below 400 km/s by late on 08 Mar. Nominal levels followed through most of 10 Mar. The field responded with quiet to unsettled periods on 07 Mar through late on 10 Mar. At 10/1642 UTC, density increased to 32 1/cm^3 while total field increased to a maximum of 18 nT at 10/2057 UTC while the Bz component was between +16/-10 nT as the 06 Mar CME began to impact the geomagnetic field. Solar wind speed was mostly between 350-420 km/s. Activity persisted through 12/0600 UTC with several prolonged periods of southward Bz. The geomagnetic field responded with active levels late on 10 Mar, followed by quiet to G1 (Minor) storm conditions on 11-12 Mar. Shortly following, at 13/1007 UTC, an interplanetary shock was observed at the DSCOVR spacecraft followed by a 33 nT geomagnetic sudden impulse at 13/1052 UTC (Wingst magnetometer) as the 10 Mar CME began to impact the geomagnetic field. Solar wind speed initially increased to 603 km/s at 13/1034 UTC, but then quickly subsided to between 430-500 km/s. Total field increased to a maximum of 25 nT at 13/1744 UTC and remained there through the end of the period. Southward deflections of the Bz component to near -24 nT were also observed. The geomagnetic field responded with active to G2 (Moderate) storm conditions on 13 Mar.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 March - 09 April 2022

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels with a chance for M-class (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) flares on 14-23 Mar due to potential flare activity from Region 2965. Very low to low activity is expected thereafter.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 16-19 Mar due to CME influence. High levels are expected once again on 02-06 Apr due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to G2 (Moderate) storm levels on 14 Mar followed by unsettled to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 15 Mar as activity from the 10 Mar CME persists. Unsettled to active levels are expected on 20-22 Mar,
26-27 Mar, and 31 Mar-03 Apr with G1 (Minor) storm conditions likely on 01 Apr due to recurrent CH HSSs.

Shortwave Radiogram, March 11-13

Hello friends

The time change process begins this weekend. Most people in North America will move their clocks forward at 0200 local on March 13. For VOA Radiogram, this means Sunday transmissions on WRMI will be one hour later by local time for most North Americans, as WRMI stays with UTC on 5850, 7730, and 7780 kHz. But on 9955 kHz, WRMI stays with local time, so on March 15, the 9955 kHz transmission moves to 1430 UTC, keeping it at the same local time for most North Americans. More time and frequency changes in the following weeks, so watch this space.

Last week's transmission of Russian text was largely successful, even resulting in 100% decodes via receivers in Russia. See these examples ...

Radio Caroline increases coverage

By Lawrie Hallett

NORWICH, England — Not for the first time, Radio Caroline is a station enjoying bucking the trend. While the rest of the radio industry is scaling down AM operations, or even ceasing them all together, the United Kingdom’s first offshore “pirate” radio station is investing in new facilities and increasing the output power of its 648 kHz AM broadcasts.

After more than 25 years of unlicensed broadcasting from the international waters of the North Sea between the British and Dutch coasts, starting Easter 1964, Radio Caroline finally stopped its offshore operations in November 1990.

RFE/RL Suspends Operations In Russia Following Kremlin Attacks

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has suspended its operations in Russia after local tax authorities initiated bankruptcy proceedings against RFE/RL’s Russian entity on March 4 and police intensified pressure on its journalists.

It also comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that could subject any journalist who deviates from the Kremlin’s stance on the Ukraine war to a 15-year prison sentence.

RFE/RL President and CEO Jamie Fly said that the decision “has been forced upon” the company “by the Putin regime’s assault on the truth.”

He said RFE/RL will continue to expand its reporting for Russian audiences and “will use every platform possible to reach them at a time when they need our journalism more than ever.” Both he and Andrei Shary, director of RFE/RL’s Russian Service, vowed that RFE/RL will continue reporting on the war.

USAGM Condemns Kremlin’s Increasing Censorship, Responds to Surge in Demand for Reporting from its Networks

WASHINGTON— Despite the Russian government’s attempted censorship of Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), there has been a surge in demand for their content, including their collaborative 24/7 Russian-language channel Current Time. In response, USAGM is expanding program delivery and access with the addition of more affiliate stations in and around Russia and the help of the Open Technology Fund’s tools and resources to circumvent internet censorship.

“It is clear that by restricting access to RFE/RL and VOA’s fact-based reporting, the Kremlin hopes to keep its own citizens in the dark and to hide the truth,” said Kelu Chao, USAGM’s Acting CEO. “The people of Russia deserve to know the facts about their government’s attacks on Ukraine and how the world is reacting. USAGM will continue to use its resources to bring unbiased information to light at this crucial time.”

RFE/RL President Jamie Fly said, “RFE/RL journalists in Russia have been unfairly slurred as ‘foreign agents,’ detained, and now their accurate reporting about an unpopular war is being blocked. RFE/RL remains committed to delivering objective reporting from inside of Russia for the Russian people despite these outrageous attempts to censor the truth.” Read RFE/RL’s full press release at this link.

Acting VOA Director Yolanda López said, “The recent threat by the Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor to block VOA and other independent media outlets now is a reality for many in our audience there. Our viewers and listeners in Russia deserve access to our factual news content at this critical time, not only about the ongoing war in Ukraine but also about all vital global events that impact their lives and actions. VOA will continue to promote and support tools and resources that will allow our audiences to bypass any blocking efforts imposed on our sites in Russia. Our journalists will continue their reporting, an example of a free press in action.” Read VOA’s full press release at this link.

Some radio, digital, and direct-to-home satellite transmissions continue to reach Russian audiences, and demand for VOA and RFE/RL's coverage is intensifying. For example, between February 24 and March 3, Current Time videos were viewed more than 240 million times across digital platforms. In addition, since Russia’s invasion, demand for Current Time content has increased dramatically among broadcast partners in Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Latvia, Estonia, and Bulgaria. With the increase over last week, there are 261 affiliates now distributing Current Time content. Between February 26 and March 5, Current Time videos have been viewed on Facebook 76 million times, while VOA’s Russian Service and RFE/RL’s Russian Service videos were each viewed about 8 million times.

From February 23 to March 2, VOA’s Russian Service reported nearly 17 million video views on social platforms, a 159% increase from the week before, while website traffic soared 146%. From February 23 to March 1, audiences viewed RFE/RL videos 436 million times on Facebook, 305 million times on YouTube, and 83 million times on Instagram – reflecting increases of 265%, 406%, and 185%, respectively, over the previous week.

Tilford Production Announces Farewell to Europe Special Marathon

Farewell To Europe Special Marathon
Channel 292, 6070 kHz
March 8, 0800-2400 CET (0700-2300 UTC)

From "Uncle Bill" Tilford, producer and host of From the Isle of Music and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot

Personal financial circumstances beyond my control recently made it necessary for me to discontinue broadcasts of my programs from stations in Europe, and Channel 292 has made the wonderful gesture of throwing us a going-away party - a 16-hour marathon of some of our favorite From the Isle of Music and Uncle Bill's Melting Pot episodes on 6070 kHz on March 8 from 0800-2400 CET (0700-2300 UTC).

Working with the station and interacting with its listeners has been a joy these past few years,  and I am deeply humbled by this act of generosity. I hope to be able to return to broadcasting from Europe some day. In the meantime, I have personally selected some favorite episodes of both shows from the past few years for this special event.

Let us make the most of this bittersweet moment.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 February - 06 March 2022

Solar activity ranged from very low to moderate levels throughout the week. The largest event of the period was an M2/1b flare observed at 02/1739 UTC from Region 2958 (N17, L=035, class/area=Bxo/60 on 03 Mar). Regions 2957 (S16, L=038, class/area=Dai/240 on 05 Mar) and 2960 (S20, L=335, class/area=Dki/450 on 05 Mar) were the most active regions throughout the week but produced only C-flares. Multiple DSFs were detected during the summary period, however, none were expected to
be Earth-directed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 06 Mar, with normal to moderate levels observed throughout the remainder of the week.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active and minor (G1) storm levels on 05-06 Mar due to the influence of a series of a negative polarity CH HSSs. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the summary period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 March - 02 April 2022

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the period, with C-flares likely and a chance for M-flares.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 07-10, 20-23 Mar, and 02 Apr. Normal to moderate levels are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach minor (G1) storm levels on 01-02 Apr, and active levels on 11-12, 19-21, and 31 Mar in response to multiple CH HSSs moving through geoeffective position. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to
prevail throughout the remainder of the period.
