Radio Six International scheduled for Sunday broadcast on October 3rd

 

Radio Six International first appeared on shortwave in 2003 and for a number of years provided daily broadcasts, reverting to monthly in 2007 before ending regular transmissions in 2008. But after a few special one-off broadcasts, we resumed regular shortwave programming in the summer of 2020 and currently broadcast on the first Sunday of every month from 12:00 - 13:00 GMT on 3,955kHz from Rohrbach, Germany with a power of 10kW, aimed at listeners in Europe.. It was very interesting to read the article researched and penned by James Careless “Shortwave Radios Keep Up With Tech” in Radio World.

It was also high time to address the issue of SW transmissions, just when the death of radio and of shortwave, and even medium-wave, is being ventilated again, while the progress of streaming and podcasting is hugely hyped, again trumping global realities.

This week's Programme - First broadcast this coming Saturday by Channel 292 - begins with the piano piece Drammatico by Scriabin, Missa Pro Fidelibus Defunctis by Antoine de Févin, and part of Schumann's String Quartet No.2.

After that, the Andante from the Oboe Concerto in D by Strauss, some Prokofiev, and part of Act lll of Louise by Gustave Charpentier.

The program ends with part of Weber's Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 - 26 September 2021

Solar activity was at very low to moderate levels. Region 2871 (S27, L=357, class/area=Dao/310 on 21 Sep) produced the largest flare of the period, an M2/1n flare at 23/0444 UTC. Associated with the flare was a Type II radio sweep (966 km/s) followed by a Type IV radio sweep. A subsequent CME signature was observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 coronagraph imagery. Analysis and modeling of the event suggested most of the ejecta was away from the Sun-Earth line but a glancing blow from the periphery of the CME may be possible on 27 Sep. An additional M1/1n flare was produced by the same region at 23/1528 UTC. A subsequent CME signature associated with the event was also analyzed with a similar potential for the periphery of the ejecta to influence Earth around 27 Sep. 

Other activity included a Type II radio sweep (739 km/s) associated with an eruption around Region 2875 (S32, L=053, class/area Bxo/010 on 24 Sep). The associated CME signature was narrow and directed away from the Sun-Earth line. Most numbered active regions were in decay and they transited through the W hemisphere with most decaying to plage by the end of the period. The remaining numbered regions in the E hemisphere were relatively simple and quiet. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the reporting period. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. Active levels were observed on 22 Sep in response to a SSBC followed by influence from positive polarity CH HSS. Unsettled conditions were observed on 21 Sep, and 23-25 Sep due to coronal hole activity. The remainder of the reporting period was quiet. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 September - 23 October 2021

Solar activity is expected to range from very low to low levels. Low levels are likely on 27-29 Sep and very low levels are likely for the remainder of the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate to high levels. High levels are likely on 29 Sep - 02 Oct, 05-08 Oct, and 20-21 Oct due primarily to influence from multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm conditions. G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) conditions are likely on 27 Sep in response to combined effects of an anticipated positive polarity CH HSS and possible glancing blow from a CME that left the Sun on 23 Sep. Active conditions associated with coronal hole activity are likely on 28-29 Sep, 05 Oct, 10 Oct and 19 Oct. Unsettled conditions are likely on 04 Oct, 18 Oct and 20-21 Oct. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of the end of the Mexican War of Independence, a special hour of Mexican music hosted by Luis Alejandro Vallebueno with guests Gabriela Ortíz and "Uncle Bill" Tilford will air on WRMI with support from Grupo DX México.   

It will be in Spanish and directed towards Central and South America, but the back end of the transmission should be listenable in most of North America and parts of Western Europe and Africa.  The music will be a combination of world-famous artists and others probably not known outside of Mexico.  

There will also be some items regarding history, customs, and shortwave in Mexico including  special appearances by a veteran of  Radio México Internacional (aka XERMX in its days on shortwave)  and a long-time member of Grupo DX México

Every four years a new federal government is elected in Germany and now the time has come again. In order to be well prepared for the upcoming elections, we would like to introduce you to our programs that will keep you informed about it.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 - 19 September 2021

Solar activity reached low levels. Region 2871 (S28, L=359, class/area=Dao/60 on 19 Sep) produced four C-class flares throughout the week, the largest of which was a C3 flare observed at 17/0420 UTC, and was the primary source of solar activity. A filament eruption which lifted off at around 13/0100-0200 UTC and centered near N35W15, produced an Earth-directed CME that arrived at Earth early on 17 Sep. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate throughout the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached active and G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 17 Sep, and active conditions early on 18 Sep, due to the arrival of the 13 Sep CME. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 13 Sep, and quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the period. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 September - 16 October 2021

Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class flare activity throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 29 Sep-03 Oct and 05-08 Oct. Normal to moderate levels are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the outlook period. 

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 28 Sep, with active conditions likely on 25, 29 Sep, and 05, 10 Oct, due to the anticipated influence of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Quiet to unsettled and mostly quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1130 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check-in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 - 12 September 2021

Solar activity was at low levels with C-class activity observed from three separate regions. Region 2864 (N24, L=249, class/area Cso/120 on 07 Sep) produced a C2/Sf event at 08/0009 UTC. Associated with this flare were Type II (723 km/s shock velocity) and Type IV radio signatures, along with a weak, Earth-directed CME. Region 2866 (S18, L=199, class/area Dkc/500 on 09 Sep) produced four C-class events including the largest of the period; a C8/1n at 08/1730 UTC. Region 2868 (S21, L=213, class/area Dhi/300 on 08 Sep) also produced four C-class flares during the period. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 06-07 Sep with a peak of 3,280 pfu observed at 06/1615 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 08-12 Sep. Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to isolated active levels during the period. Quiet to active conditions were observed on 06-08 Sep due to weak, positive polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet levels were observed on 09 Sep through a majority of 10 Sep. Unsettled to active conditions were observed on late 10 Sep through early on 11 Sep due to weak influence from the 08 Sep CME. Quiet conditions were observed for the remainder of 11 Sep through 12 Sep. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 September - 09 October 2021

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels, with a slight chance for M-class activity, on 13-16 Sep due to potential flare activity from Regions 2866 and 2868. Very low to low activity is expected from 17-28 Sep. A return to low levels, with a slight chance for M-class activity, is possible on 29 Sep - 09 Oct upon the return of old Regions 2866 and 2868. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels on 13 Sep - 04 Oct and 08-09 Oct. Moderate to high levels are possible on 05-07 Oct due to CH HSS influence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled levels on 21 Sep and unsettled to active levels on 04-05 Oct, all due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at mostly quiet levels.

WRMI set to relay Euro pirate station Saturday night

 

WRMI will relay Radio Merlin International, on Saturday, 11 September 2021, on 5950 kHz 

 

The broadcast is at 0000 UTC on September 12.

 

Radio Merlin was part of Texas Radio Shortwave's Series 1 Euro pirate relays and was asked to produce a new program.

Hello friends,

In last week's email, I forgot to note the new "winter" frequency of The Mighty KBC, now on 5960 kHz from a transmitter in Germany, Sundays 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8 to 10 pm EDT). In addition to the great mix of oldies hits, there is a minute of MFSK64 at 0130 UTC.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 220, Friday 1300 UTC) is provided by Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

On this weekend's program (221), we will resume our experiment, suggested by Tobias in Germany, of eliminating the gap (about 0.7 seconds) between the text introduction of an image and the image itself. Perhaps there will be fewer lost image headers when that gap is removed. So far, our results have been inconclusive, but we will try again. Of the nine images in the show, there will be no gap in front of Big Ben, Ithaca, and Stromness.

Saudi Radio to launch 24-hour Urdu transmission

 

JEDDAH: The Saudi Radio plans to launch test transmission of a 24-hour Urdu service from the middle of September 2021, while the services will be formally launched on September 23, a Saudi official said.

The transmission will include programs on Islam, the holy Quran, Ahadis and historical and world affairs.

Saudi Broadcasting Authority (SBA) deputy chairman Faisal Ilyafi announced while talking to a delegation of the Pakistan Journalists Forum (PJF).

The world transmission began from the holy city of Makkah in September 1950 with a 15-minute slot for the Urdu program, and he stressed that it is the "need of the hour to face challenges and keep ourselves abreast of the changes in media."

The Saudi Urdu transmission has decided to continue its transmission on social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, FM, Shortwave, Satellite, and Twitter, he added.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has given approval to the project under the supervision of Media Minister Dr Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi, he said, adding that the Saudi Information Ministry has also made several other languages part of the project.

The deputy chairman stated that said any language has a large significance to disseminate news and events, owing to why languages such as Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Hebrew, and Chinese would be part of the transmission.

By making these efforts, Saudi Arabia’s role as the leader of development, aid, Islamic services, effective member of the G20, and economic performance will be highlighted on the world arena.

I hope that everyone is okay after Hurricane Ida and its remnants. We hope electricity and other elements of normalcy are restored to Louisiana as soon as possible, although it may take days or weeks.

Here in northern Virginia, we were visited by Tropical Depression Ida in the form of an intense lightning storm in the predawn hours of September 1. Fortunately, the lightning missed my antennas. The heavy rain forecast for later in the day did not really happen here. Instead, that precipitation was much worse in New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, and surrounding areas. We also wish them (you?) recovery as soon as possible.

Opinion: The U.S. government left its own journalists from VOA and Radio Liberty behind in Afghanistan

Now that the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is complete, many stories of heroic efforts to save Americans and Afghan allies are pouring out, each describing one facet of the chaos and dysfunction that plagued the effort to evacuate all of those in Kabul who had placed their trust in the United States. Among the most tragic examples is the story of how the Biden administration left behind more than 100 government-sponsored journalists, plus their families, after putting them through three weeks of hell.

The administration was warned early and often about the 600 or so employees, contractors, and family members who worked for U.S.-sponsored news organizations under the umbrella of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, a federal agency funded by Congress. They include journalists working for the Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) who have worked in Afghanistan for years — at great personal risk. The Taliban has killed four RFE/RL journalists since 2016 through suicide bomb attacks, and the company’s journalists routinely receive death threats from the extremists.
