Polish Radio launches news bulletins in Ukrainian to report on the Russian invasion

Public broadcaster Polish Radio on Thursday began airing special news bulletins in Ukrainian, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.  (Polkish Radio 1 on 225 kHz LW)

The newscasts can be heard on Polish Radio 1, every day after 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.  News is gathered and presented by journalists from the Ukrainian section of Polish Radio’s External Service, also known as Radio Poland. 

Broadcast on longwave, Polish Radio 1 is available not just in Poland, but also in Ukraine and almost all over Europe, IAR reported.

Effort to counter Russian disinformation

The three-minute news programmes are addressed to the Ukrainian expatriate community in Poland, as well as to Ukraine’s home population, said Andrzej Rybat, director of Radio Poland. 

He added that the bulletins would focus on the situation on the frontline, as well as the free world’s efforts to help Ukraine, and especially Poland’s drive to secure meaningful international sanctions against Russia.

Also covered will be the fate of the Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion and the support provided to them by Polish non-governmental and church-based groups. In addition, journalists will report on all initiatives on the part of Polish politicians and the wider society to help Ukrainians based in Ukraine, Ryba?t said.

He emphasized that the news bulletins would aim to dispel “disinformation and fake news produced by the propaganda machine of Putin’s regime,” which are part of Russia’s “hybrid war against the free world.”

'Credible, first-hand information

Drawing on extensive contacts and teaming up with journalists and partners in Ukraine and Western countries, Polish Radio’s Ukrainian news programs will seek to counter fake news and provide "credible, first-hand information" about the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Ryba?t also said.  

The Ukrainian-language newscasts are also an expression of solidarity with Ukrainian journalists, who are risking their lives to defend the whole Euro-Atlantic community against “a concentrated disinformation attack by the propaganda machine of the Russian aggressor," he added.             

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Russia announced a "special military operation" against Ukraine to eliminate what President Vladimir Putin said was a "serious threat" against his country.

Despite appeals and warnings from the international community, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by land, air, and sea, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War II, the Reuters news agency reported.

Top Polish officials have condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine and vowed to support the Ukrainian people.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 February 2022

Solar activity ranged from very low to low levels throughout the week. Regions 2954 (N17, L=118, class/area=Hsx/120 on 21 Feb) and 2955 (N14, L=107, class/area=Hsx/150 on 22 Feb) were the primary regions on the disk, but remained quiescent throughout the period.

No Earth-directed CMEs were observed. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 26 Feb, and was normal to moderate throughout the remainder of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 21 Feb and Minor (G1) geomagnetic storm levels on 22 Feb due to the influence of a positive polarity CH HSS. Active conditions were once again observed on 27 Feb due to another geoeffective positive polarity CH HSS. Quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the week under a background solar wind environment. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 February - 26 March 2022

Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class flares throughout the outlook period. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 28 Feb-08 Mar, 12-17, and 20-22 Mar in response to enhanced solar wind conditions associated with recurrent CH HSSs. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 28 Feb-01 Mar, 05-06, 11-12, and 19-21 Mar due to multiple recurrent CH HSSs. Quiet and quiet to unsettled field activity is expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 February 2022

Solar activity ranged from very low to to moderate. Region 2941 (N24, L=337, class/area=Eki/370 on 10 Feb) produced both M-class (R1-Minor) events during the period, an M1/Sf at 14/1731 UTC and an M1/Sf at 15/1815 UTC. The region was the most complex on the visible disk during the past week and all significant activity was produced as it was rotating around the NW limb. Following its exit from the visible disk, a Type II radio sweep was observed from CME produced from the vicinity of the region on 18 Feb. The remaining regions on the visible disk produced only isolated low-level C-class activity and were magnetically simple. 

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. A very weak enhancement in the 10 MeV proton flux (well below the S1 threshold) was observed on 16 Feb and an additional one on 18 Feb. The weak enhancements were likely associated with activity on the far-side of the Sun. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit ranged from normal to high levels. High levels were observed on 14-18 Feb. Elevated geomagnetic activity on 19-20 Feb decreased the flux to normal-moderate levels. 

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. During the onset of a positive polarity CH HSS, an isolated period of G1 was observed during the 20/0000-0300 UTC synoptic period. Total magnetic field strength reached a peak of 12 nT while the Bz component rotated as far south as -11 nT at 20/0115 UTC. Solar wind speeds increased to between 500-550 km/s and remained elevated through the end of the reporting period. Outside of that activity, unsettled conditions were only observed on 16 Feb

and early on 19 Feb. The remainder of the summary period was quiet. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 February - 19 March 2022

Solar activity is likely to be at low levels, with a slight chance for R1 (Minor) events on 21-23 Feb, from 21 Feb to 06 Mar due to flare potential from regions of flux near and just beyond the E limb. Very low levels are expected from 07 Mar-19 Mar. 

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from normal to high levels. High levels are expected on 21-25 Feb, 04-10 Mar, and 12-17 Mar. Elevated levels of electron flux are anticipated due to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs.

The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at normal to moderate levels. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. G1 conditions are likely on 03-04 Mar, 11 Mar and 19 Mar; active conditions are likely on 21 Feb and 12 Mar; unsettled conditions are likely over 22-23 Feb, 05-06 Mar, 13 Mar and 18 Mar. All elevated levels of geomagnetic activity are anticipated due to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be quiet.

Radio Öömrang (Radio Amrum) scheduled for annual broadcast, February 21

 

The annual winter broadcast of Radio Öömrang (Radio Amrum), will be broadcast on February 21, 2022. 

This special broadcast airs on February 21, a North Frisian holiday (Bikebrånen), and is relayed by Media Broadcast. It was founded by the amateur radio operator, Arjan Kolzow on the island of Amrum in North Germany.

The first broadcast was in 2006. Most of the programming is in the North Frisian language (Öömrang dialect), as well as Standard German and English. Programming is aimed at the descendants of North Frisian immigrants in North America. 

English station identifications are noted as, “this is Radio Öömrang, the freedom voice of  Öömrang.”

The 2022 broadcast is scheduled for 1600-1700 UTC on 15215 kHz (500 kW) relayed via Issoudun, France by Media Broadcast transmitter facilities.

The 80th anniversary of the Voice of America is celebrated this month. An amateur radio radio special event will take place this weekend, February 19 and 20, involving three stations: W3V at or near the VOA headquarters in Washington. W8O at the former VOA Bethany, Ohio, transmitting site. And W4A at the former VOA Greenville, North Carolina, C site (near the existing B site). Stations will be active after 1400 UTC each day, and into the evening.

WBCQ 4790 kHz (Radio Angela) runs its final week of propagation tests February 20-26 US local date (February 21-27 world date) as follows:

0200-0400 UTC February 22-27 world date (9pm-11pm EST US date)

Radio Emma Toc - celebrating wireless station 2MT at 100!

 

Dear Listener and Viewers

I am pleased to inform you, that I will be broadcasting another video stream on Monday, February 14, 2022, to celebrate the wireless station 2MT.

In 1922, after requests and petitions from radio hams in the United Kingdom, a license was issued for station 2MT to transmit a program of CW (morse code), telephony (voice), and music, on a weekly basis. Transmissions came from a small wooden hut in Writtle, Essex, where engineers working for the Marconi Company were given the task of putting on the air, a wireless station for 'calibration purposes' aimed at the growing number of radio hams and radio enthusiasts.

Over a short period, and with the good fortune of this Marconi team having a selection of gifted radio engineers, and maverick individuals, 2MT became incredibly popular. The station went on to lay the foundations of entertainment broadcasting that were to follow.  

On Monday, February 14, will be the centenary of the first transmission from 2MT. From 11am in the morning  (11:00UTC), we will be playing audio documentaries and videos looking at the start of broadcasting here in the United Kingdom, and at local 6.45pm  (18:45UTC), I will present a live program where hopefully we can all join in to drink a toast to '2MT'.

Our broadcast will not be a full history of the station, more of a celebration of the people involved and everything that we enjoy about radio today. I hope to link with others celebrating 2MT & also amateur radio operators on the air for this anniversary day.

WBCQ 4790 kHz Test Update February 13-19 US dates (14-20 world dates), 2022

Propagation testing continues on 4790 kHz using 0100-0300 UTC every night.  So far, the signal has been good to excellent in most of eastern and central North America, problematic due to CODAR west of the Rockies and fair to good in much of continental Europe, especially Germany, the Czech Republic, and Finland. 

On February 14 world date 0100-0200 UTC, there will be a special tribute to World Radio Day and St. Valentine's Day.

The highlight was a 100% decode of the Ukrainian text as received by an SDR in Ukraine. This demonstrates that, if the internet is not available for any reason, text-via-radio can be a substitute, in a variety of alphabets.

Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1230 UTC on 3583 kHz USB. Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. This week's Program - First broadcast this coming Saturday on Channel 292 - starts with a nocturne by the composer credited with inventing the form - John Field. Then three of John Betjeman's poems set to music and sung, some of a violin sonata by Franz von Biber - revolutionary for its time (the 17th century). Next - some Bartok - Rhapsody for Violin and Orchestra, followed by part of a string quartet by Aaron Copland. Three pieces finish off the hour - a traditional Georgian Chorale, Some Telemann, and an arrangement of La Folia by Vivaldi.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.
