Shortwave Radiogram, weekend schedule

Hello friends,

By way of a holiday card, above is last weekend's painting of the fir tree, received by Michael in the UK, 15 December 2019, 2330-2400 UTC, 7780 kHz from WRMI Florida. Thanks to all who sent  reports last weekend, with many nice (nice and clear and nice and fuzzy) MFSK images. You can see many examples at the Twitter account @SWRadiogram or https://twitter.com/swradiogram .

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 130) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC) and by Ralf in Germany and Jeff in Oklahoma (both Sunday 2330 UTC). Jeff used Fldigi, successfully, with a Raspberry Pi Zero!. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend, 19-22 December 2019 (program 131), is our annual Holiday Spectacular! After the program introduction in MFSK32, we switch to MFSK64 to transmit fifteen images of holiday decorations from around the United States. Then back to MFSK32 for the closing announcements.

Please send reception reports to radiogram@verizon.net
And visit http://swradiogram.net
Twitter: @SWRadiogram or https://twitter.com/swradiogram (visit during the weekend to see listeners' results)

Shortwave Radiogram Transmission Schedule
UTC Day UTC Time Frequency Transmitter

Saturday  0330-0400 UTC 9265 kHz  WINB Pennsylvania
Sunday 0800-0830 UTC 5850 kHz 7730 kHz WRMI Florida
Sunday 2330-2400 UTC 7780 kHz WRMI Florida

The Mighty KBC transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 7-9 pm EST) on 5960 kHz, via Germany. A minute of MFSK is at about 0130 UTC.  Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0100-0200 UTC on 5850 kHz and 0130-0230 UTC on 9395 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas). Also look for a waterfall ID at the beginning of the show. thisisamusicshow@gmail.com . www.instagram.com/thisisamusicshow/ www.twitter.com/ThisIsAMusicSho/ @ThisIsAMusicSho

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1300 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1300 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1230 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Thursdays at 0000 UTC (Wednesday 7 pm EST) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!

Google translates: NDR Info sends the "Greeting on board" from 20:05 to
22:00 CET. This is followed by the transmission of the Christmas Mass from the church of St. Mary Magdalene in Bochum-Wattenscheid from 22 to 23.15 CET. Then you will hear the second part of "Greetings on Board" until midnight CET.

It has tradition and exudes a very special pre-Christmas mood: On Christmas Eve greetings are sent to the seafarers around the world from 8:05 pm - 10:00 pm and from 11:15 pm - midnight on NDR Info. And on the most different channels and technical ways, so that the greetings and messages can be guaranteed to be received on all seven seas.

The ship's crews have several options to receive the program "Greeting on Board". Also the shortwave belongs to it.  The live streams of the program (20.05 to 22 clock and 23.15 clock to 24 clock MEZ) can be found here: NDR Info and NDR Info Special.

In addition, there is the possibility to listen to the program via the NDR radio app. NDR Info can also be received via FM, DAB + and DVB-S radio, NDR Info special only via DAB + and DVB-S radio.

So that all crew members on board - on the seas or in the harbors can receive the traditional program, the NDR radio has also rented shortwave frequencies:

 From 19:00 - 21:00
Frequency target area
6080 kHz Atlantic - North

In this special festive edition of In The Studio, Glyn Tansley goes behind the facade of the Vatican to meet the members of the oldest choir in the world, as they prepare for the biggest night on their calendar.

The Sistine Chapel Choir has a history dating back 1500 years, but it’s still one of the most active cultural institutions at the very heart of the Vatican.

It also has the prestige of being the Pope’s personal choir, performing for him whenever he’s in St Peter’s Basilica. As the Holy Father’s personal choir, it is called upon to play an ecumenical role, contributing to bringing together in art what has been separated by history and politics.

In their rehearsal room we meet the men and boys who make up the choir, as they prepare for Christmas Mass, an event watched around the world by millions of worshiper's. We’ll come to understand why being in this choir so important to them, and the pressures of always being on display through the Vatican’s global TV and radio services.

This is a rare glimpse into the real lives at the heart of an ancient tradition.

Australia Calling: A look at 80 years of Radio Australia and ABC international broadcasting

By Michael Vincent and Michael Walsh
The history of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is a story of Australia's relationship with Asia and the Pacific.

But the ABC's international operations have come a long way from their origins in 1939.

Designed to compete as a propaganda service during World War II, radio programs were broadcast in the languages of both Australia's allies and its enemies: initially in French, Dutch, German and Spanish, and after 1942 in Japanese, Thai, Indonesian and Mandarin.

Brazilian Radio Station Antenna Destroyed in Arson Attack

HAVANA TIMES – Brazilian authorities must thoroughly investigate the arson attack against broadcaster radio Aliança FM and hold the perpetrators to account, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

In the early hours of December 3, unidentified assailants burned down the broadcast antenna of Brazilian community radio station Aliança FM in the city of Choró, in Ceará state, according to local news reports. No one was harmed in the attack, which destroyed the antenna, according to those reports.

“The arson attack on community radio station Aliança FM is deeply disturbing. The police in Ceara should thoroughly investigate the attack, bring those responsible to justice, and take all necessary measures to ensure that radio journalists can report safely,” said Natalie Southwick, CPJ’s Central and South America program coordinator, in New York. “The harassment and intimidation of community radio journalists directly affects people’s access to information, especially in remote areas.”

Marcolino Borges, the founder and editor-in-chief of Aliança FM, told CPJ via phone that he was at home when someone who lives near the antenna location called him, between 1 and 2 a.m. on December 3, saying the antenna was on fire. Borges said he arrived at the antenna soon after and found it destroyed, with its equipment shed on fire. He said he called the police, and that they arrived and opened an investigation into the attack.

The radio’s studio is located in a different area than the antenna, and was not attacked, Borges said.

Borges told CPJ that he co-founded Aliança FM–originally known as Pioneira FM—in 2005, and said it had received many threats for its broadcasts over the years in relation to its coverage of local news and politics.

Borges added that he has been in a long-running dispute with Otacio Dantas Filho, a former mayor of Choro, who was unhappy with the station’s coverage of local politics and had threatened to “end” radio Aliança FM.

Borges said that, since September 2018, Dantas Filho has tried to jam radio Aliança FM’s broadcasts by transmitting radio signals on the same frequency. Borges said he filed a complaint with the National Telecommunications Agency, which shut down Dantas Filho’s station last year, but added that Dantas Filho had recently resumed broadcasting on Aliança FM’s frequency.

In a phone interview with CPJ, Dantas Filho said that he had nothing to do with the attack on the antenna and that he had never interfered in Aliança FM’s broadcasts. Dantas Filho said that Borges stole radio equipment from him in the past, an accusation that Borges denied to CPJ.

Dantas Filho told CPJ that he believes radio stations should not cover local politics, and said he would give a statement to police if asked.

Tim Carlos, a representative of the Community Radios National Association, and Vanderlei Barbosa, a representative of the Radio Journalists Union in the Quixadá region, which includes Choró, confirmed in emails to CPJ that there had been an ongoing dispute over radio broadcast rights in the city.

The Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense sent a statement to CPJ via email saying that authorities’ initial findings indicated that someone cut the cables supporting the antenna and then set it on fire using a flammable liquid, and said that no explosive devices were found at the scene.

The statement also said that the Civil Police are interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence, but that no further details could be shared in order to avoid jeopardizing the investigation.

Since the beginning of 2018, Brazilian radio journalists have been subject to death threats, bombing attacks, a drive-by shooting, and threats from politicians, according to CPJ reporting. At least two radio reporters, Jairo Souza and Jefferson Pureza Lopes, have been killed in that time, according to CPJ research.

News and Frequency Updates

Australia
Jan Sorensen of Danish station Radio Oz Viola has announced new times for the station's weekend broadcasts to avoid interference from Radio Free Asia on 5820.

He writes on Facebook:
"Two radio stations have been started / moved to the frequency '5820 kHz.' (RFA and CNR1). Sometimes you can hear one, other times the other. RFA (Radio Free Asia from US) and CNR1 which is a Chinese government controlled transmitter. They start at 14:45 UTC and end again at 17:00 UTC. They produce some powerful side bands at our 5825 kHz frequency. Therefore, it is decided that we move our two hours forward starting at 12:00 UTC and ending at 14:00 UTC (13:00 to 15:00 CET)."

The RadioMondes Facebook thread carried this statement from Lagardere Active, the French media company who own Europe Number One last Friday (Google edited translation of French)

" I confirm that the broadcast of Europe 1 is not intended to become permanent on longwave
This broadcast consumes a lot of energy, which is not very green.
In addition, the population listening to our programs through this means decrease from year to year. Today, there are much more powerful ways to listen to our programs with much more comfort and quality regardless of the area in France or abroad (FM, smartphone app, website, connected speakers). To date, I confirm that no date is set for this stop, but the more we move forward in time, the closer the date.
Have a nice weekend."

Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32 (PA NBEMS is experimenting with Thor 50x1 for messages).

Encore-Classical Music on Radio Tumbril, weekend schedule update

This coming weekend Encore - Classical Music on Radio Tumbril will be broadcasting on a new and even better frequency via WWCR in Tennessee.* *Saturday 14th December 21:00 UTC 9350 kHz - this is the afternoon in US and Canada and the signal should carry to western Europe too.* This replaces the 01:00 Broadcast by WWCR on 6115 kHz.

Encore - Classical Music this weekend is - of course - being broadcast as usual by Channel 292 (Europe) on 6070 kHz at 15:00 UTC Sunday 15th December.
And by WBCQ on 7490 kHz at 01:00 UTC Monday 16th December.

There is a repeat on 6070 kHz on Friday 20th December at 19:00 UTC.

Do let us know how well you can pick up Encore at your location by emailing to encoretumbril@gmail.com . We try to reply to all emails and will send eQSL cards for full reports.

*This week's programme *starts with a Mozart piano trio, then a couple of absorbing contemporary works, followed by two songs about the cold from Schubert. Vaughan Williams next with The Banks of Green Willow. The second half of the show has some Rossini, Jennifer Higdon, Malcolm Arnold and finishes with O Let me Weep from Purcell's The Fairy Queen.
Tune in if you can.

Both Channel 292 and WBCQ as well as WWCR can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their sites with a google search.

*Help needed at Channel 292 in Germany.* 292 is struggling financially.
They are renting out airtime to the Overcomer Ministry to try and bring in funds. Revenue is dependent on feedback - please help them by sending a simple reception report to:

lasttime@overcomerministry.org       mail to:lasttime@overcomerministry.org

In the meantime - thank you for spreading the word about Encore - Classical Music on Shortwave. And thank you to everyone for letting us know how well the signal is received where you live.

Brice Avery - Encore - Radio Tumbril.

Regular Broadcast times are:
15:00 - 16:00 UTC Sunday, and repeated 19:00 - 20:00 UTC Friday on 6070 kHz Channel 292 (Germany).

Are Digital Radio Coverage Maps Useful?

Visual representation of digital radio implementation around the world can cause confusion unless properly represented

Ruxandra Obreja
The author is chairman of Digital Radio Mondiale.

A picture is worth a thousand words and a digital radio coverage map might be worth a million dollars or more in business.

We might stress in documents and presentations the undeniable benefits of digital radio: Better audio, extra data, more choice, emergency warning capability and less spectrum. For DRM specifically the list also includes, the capacity to offer improved audio and data for large or local coverage very often using the existing basic infrastructure.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

Hello friends,
Seasonal propagation – nearing the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere – has resulted in interesting reception in many parts of the world. The Sunday 0800-0830 broadcast is now almost routinely received in Europe, more likely on 5850 kHz which is beamed in that direction from WRMI Florida, rather than 7730 kHz which is directed more towards western North America and the Pacific. Reception of this broadcast is also now possible in Japan, with both 5850 and 7730 worth trying.
Even if the images are fuzzy or can’t be decoded at all, the text might be largely successful, especially the slower MFSK mode. It is helpful if you estimate what percentage of the text characters decoded correctly, in your reports via email and to the Twitter account @SWRadiogram .
Speaking of reports, during the past week, I received the first reception report to Shortwave Radiogram from a cruise ship. It was from Jake aboard Holland America’s MS Rotterdam, off the Pacific Coast of Central America. A few years ago I received and decoded VOA Radiogram on another Holland America ship, in the Caribbean, out on our stateroom’s balcony, in heavy seas, with occasional saltwater spray.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 128) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz), Jeff in Oklahoma and HFZone (location unknown) (both Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 129, 5-9 December 2019, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:44 MFSK32: Program preview
2:55 Canadian Coast Guard completes 2019 Arctic operations*
9:04 MFSK64: Satellite accidentally captures comet outburst*
13:18 Businesses need to rethink where they put cell towers*
17:49 This week's images
28:10 MFSK32: Closing announcements
