Voice of Korea announces new focus on Letterbox program

The first issue of the Mailbox program on Voice of Korea in the first year announced that, at the request of the listeners, programming will cover about the history and culture, tourism in the DPRK, and familiarize with the recipes of traditional Korean dishes.

"Last year, our office received a lot of requests from listeners who asked us to tell a lot about the history and culture of the Korean nation, to introduce in detail the traditional Korean dishes and tourism in the DPRK."

In the new year in our programs we will widely cover all this",the presenter said. Today the Voice of Korea hour program consists of a national anthem, patriotic songs, news, short notes or essays, music, announcements of broadcasting frequencies. Sometimes on the air there are small headings
dedicated to the listeners' feedback on programs, songs from friendly countries, etc.

According to the directory Radio Broadcasting in Russian, broadcasting in Russian from Pyongyang began June 15, 1963. This year, the Russian edition of the radio Voice of Korea will turn 55 years old.

DAB+ gets a boost in France: CSA announces a clear and detailed plan

Just after Christmas French regulator, the CSA, announced its plan for the acceleration of DAB+ rollouts in France. In this blog, Jean-Marc Dubreuil, Country Manager, France, at WorldDAB, explains the key points from the consultation and the CSA’s proposals.
The new strategy is titled “nodes and arcs.” Metropolitan coverage will be the nodes of the strategy, while highways and main road are the arcs. The plan was shaped throughout 2017, gathering input from the industry, and spoilers were revealed during the WorldDAB General Assembly in November 2017 in Paris.

What can France expect from this ambitious plan? By 2020, the 47 most populated area of France (70%+ of the population) will be covered by a regional DAB+ multiplex and 47% by a local multiplex. If the national call for application is successful, highways and main roads will offer the continuity of radio listening for the drivers from north to south and east to west. By 2021, DAB+ will have brought a significant improvement to the radio industry, giving French radio a chance to compete in the digital age.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 - 07 January 2018 Solar activity was very low throughout the reporting period. Region 2693 (N18, L=333, class/area=Cro/20 on 04 Jan) was the only numbered sunspot region on the visible disk but it was inactive and absent of significant flare activity. No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed during the period. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached moderate levels on 01 January with normal levels observed throughout the remainder of the period (02-07 Jan). Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 01 January due to the influence of a positive polarity coronal hole high-speed stream. Quiet conditions were observed throughout the rest of the period (02-07 Jan).

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 08 January - 03 February 2018
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 14-19, 23, and 25 January in response to recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream influence. Normal to moderate levels are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.  Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 08, 15, and 20 January due to the anticipated effects of recurrent coronal hole high-speed streams. Quiet to unsettled geomagnetic field activity is expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

World Music Radio back on shortwave

On January 8th 2005 a hurricane force storm knocked down the transmitter aerial of World Music Radio (WMR) at the transmitter site near Karup in western Denmark, and silenced WMR broadcasting on 5815 kHz (7 kW).

 After a short break of 13 years - WMR is now back on short wave. Broadcasting on the new frequency of 5840 kHz commenced today January 7th at 0000. This time using low power only - 100 W only - into an Inverted V aerial at the new transmitter site near Randers, Denmark. Later 927 and 15805 kHz will be added.

 The music format is tropical world music, and WMR can also be heard via online streaming at www.wmr.radio

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules

Hello friends,
Shortwave Radiogram last weekend was scheduled for 2.5 transmitter hours: four half-hour broadcasts, with the fourth on two frequencies, for 2.5 hours. Only 1.5 of those transmitter hours were actually transmitted, for a transmission fulfillment rate of 60%. The first broadcast, Saturday at 1600-1630 UTC on 9400 kHz, was not on the air because of a power failure in Bulgaria. The show Monday at 0800-0830 UTC was broadcast on 5850 kHz but not on scheduled 7730 kHz because of an error in the WRMI automation system. Klaus in Germany reported that the signal there on 7730 kHz was S9 when it abruptly went off the air at 0800 UTC. The signal on 5850 kHz was not so good in Germany.

Let’s hope for better luck for the first broadcast of 2018.

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram is mostly in MFSK32. With Iran in the news, the first news item will be about smartphones in Iran. This will be followed by some text in Persian. You will need the UTF-8 character set (default in Fldigi, I think, and the only character set in TIVAR) for the Persian to display correctly. To check your character set in Fldigi: Configure > UI > Colors & Fonts > Rx/Tx.

Part of the show will be in Thor Micro, an exotic and very slow mode. It might work if reception is difficult. Thor Micro does not have an RSID. I will provide thirty seconds for you to change the mode manually: Op Mode > THOR > THOR Micro. Sorry, TIVAR and AndFlmsg do not yet have this mode, but the Thor Micro segment occupies only about five minutes of the program.

The mystery of fast radio burst

It's been ten years since the first 'fast radio burst' (FRB) was discovered, and scientist have realized that FRB's are very real, and one of the greatest new discoveries in astronomy in decades.

Astronomy's February 2018 issue, includes an interesting feature, Cosmic Firecracker, on the mystery of fast radio burst. These bright but fleeting explosions unleash more energy than the Sun produces in a day - and yet scientist don't know what causes them.

Yvette Cendes has a great feature, delving into the mysterious signals, and notes the rapid release of energy, produces a burst of radio energy - a fast radio burst. Plenty to ponder too for the radio listener, and how FRB may affect reception.

The writer notes, "we are at the dawn of the fast radio burst era. For now, we will have to wait to see where this new cosmic mystery takes us."

SIBC Honiara battles to stay on the air

The national broadcaster, SIBC, is taking drastic and desperate measures to stay on air. This comes after Solomon Power's recent disconnection of SIBC's power supply due to a $65,000 outstanding bill.

The national broadcaster, which has the furthest reach and relied on by the rural populace, currently runs on generators, which are expensive to maintain. Chief Executive Officer Ashley Wickham told the Sunday Star they are taking every possible measure available to keep the station on air. "We've already shutdown the medium wave (MW) transmitter because of the situation," Wickham said. "Only the short wave transmitter is still being maintained because it reaches the whole country," he added. Our streamed overnight service listened to internationally had to be switched off at 11pm so the generators could rest."

Wickham said their poor financial situation came about as a result of the government's critical cash flow problem. The government is SIBC's main source of revenue. Wickham said they will review the situation in the New Year. "But our outlook is not so clear.We have not been told when Parliament is likely to sit to look at the budget. If our finances don't improve, we will reduce the transmission hours of the shortwave transmitter so that they are only heard in the early mornings and evenings to close down at 11pm.Then we start a process of lay-off of staff."

The situation is also affecting SIBC's proposed television service. Wickham said earlier, due to the government's cash flow problems, they cancelled a contract payment of $2.5 million which SIBC were to use to set up the early part of the TV service. "We have submissions for capitalization of the TV Project and for equipment upgrades for radio equipment, studios, administration, provincial studios, provincial FM stations etc. "These total $23 million. "Since the government changed we have not heard how the new administration views our SIBC prospects," Wickham stated. He said SIBC had also complained to the Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of Finance that Solomon Power did not seem to know the essential services act and did not seem to know or care about the cash-flow situation everyone reliant on government is affected by.

Solomon Power earlier insisted their action applies to every customer that has outstanding bills with them.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 26 Dec due to the influence of a negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet and quiet to unsettled levels were observed throughout the rest of the week.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 January - 27 January 2018

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 02-06, 14-19, and 23-24 Jan. Moderate flux levels are expected through the rest of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is likely to reach G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 01 and 13 Jan, with active periods likely on 02, 08, 14, 20 and 27 Jan, due to the effects of multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Quiet and quiet to unsettled geomagnetic field activity is expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Iran warns protestors will 'pay the price' as unrest turns deadly

Tehran (AFP) - Iran warned on Sunday that protesters will "pay the price" after a third night of unrest saw mass demonstrations across the country, two people killed and dozens arrested.

Videos on social media showed thousands marching across the country overnight in the biggest test for the Islamic republic since mass protests in 2009.

They showed demonstrations in Mashhad, Isfahan and many smaller cities but travel restrictions and limited coverage by official media made it difficult to confirm reports.
