The Radio Scene at the Sinking of the Graf Spee

Graf Spee
It was early morning on Friday September 1, 1939, that German forces invaded Poland in what is considered to be the beginning of World War 2.  At 11:15 am in London on Sunday September 3, (1939), the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced over BBC Radio that Great Britain was at war against Germany.
At the time, the German Battle Cruiser KMS Admiral Graf Spee was in rendezvous with its supply ship the Altmark in the Atlantic Ocean, southwest of the Canary Islands.  Under orders, both the Graf Spee and the Altmark fled at high speed southward.  A hunter group of 25 allied ships was ordered to find and to sink the German cruiser.
The KMS Admiral Graf Spee had been laid down as Construction Number 125 at the German navy shipyard at Wilhelmshaven on October 1, 1932, and it was launched nearly two years later on June 30, 1934.  With its eight nine-cylinder MAN diesel engines, the ship could travel at the fast water speed of 32 miles per hour.  This ship was christened by Huberta, the daughter of Admiral Maximilian von Spee, in honor of whom the ship was named.
During the month of October (1939), the Graf Spee sank or captured five ships in the South Atlantic before making into the Indian Ocean where there was an encounter with another two more ships.  On her return to the Atlantic, the Graf Spee sank three more ships before heading towards the coast of South America at Montevideo, Uruguay.  It should also be added that there was no loss of life in any of these naval encounters, and Captain Hans Langsdorff on the Graf Spee humanely ensured the safety of all personnel aboard all ships that were sunk or captured.
Around daylight on Wednesday December 13 (1939), a firefight began with Graf Spee versus three British warships; Exeter, Ajax and Achilles.  After a two hour fight all four ships disengaged, and that evening the damaged Graf Spee steamed into the port of Montevideo in neutral Uruguay for repairs which would take about two weeks to complete.
The German wounded were taken to the English Hospital in Montevideo, and the dead were buried with due honor.  Allied shipping personnel who had been captured by the Graf Spee before their ships were sunk, were released in Montevideo.  According to international laws involving a neutral country during a war, the government of Uruguay informed the Graf Spee that it would need to leave within 72 hours, (3 days) or face internment.
The British admiralty broadcast a series of radio signals in Morse Code on frequencies known to be intercepted by German intelligence and this information indicated that a large British naval force was awaiting the Graf Spee if it ventured out into international waters.  However in reality, the nearest British task force was still some 3,000 miles away.  So this was just a bluff.
The Graf Spee was still in disrepair and it was low in ammunition, and therefore incapable of winning a major attack out in the ocean.  If it remained in Montevideo, the Royal Navy would have access to the impounded ship.
Captain Langsdorff aboard the Graf Spee, callsign DGTS, communicated by radio with naval headquarters in Germany using German Morse Code, and two options were placed before him.  He could make a dash to Buenos Aires in Argentina, where the ship would be impounded though safe.  Or he could scuttle the ship, which was the option that he chose.
On Monday December 18 (1939), the Graf Spee with the captain and a maintenance crew of just 40 seamen moved away from Montevideo, and in the early evening, a planned massive series of internal explosions destroyed and sank the Graf Spee.  A small tug from Argentina had already carried the remaining seamen over to Buenos Aires in Argentina.  Another small German supply ship, the Tacoma, was impounded in Buenos Aires.
Two days later, Captain Hans Langsdorff committed suicide in his hotel room in Buenos Aires; all of the German seamen from both ships were taken to Argentina and interned for the remainder of the war; and the few rusted remains of the Graf Spee remain to this day in the shallow waters just five miles almost directly south of Montevideo.
Radio coverage of the dramatic events associated with the Graf Spee in Montevideo Harbour and in the River Plate estuary were presented by Talbot G. Bowen at the request of NBC in New York.  Bowen, an American citizen who was employed in Montevideo, had previously presented on local radio a few items of regional interest, as well as a couple of major radio events for NBC in the United States.
Bowen had been contracted by NBC to cover all local events associated with the Graf Spee, and he happened to be on the quayside at Montevideo when the Graf Spee moved out of the harbor at 5:55 pm on December 17 (1939).  He gave a live actuality report of the departure of the Graf Spee from Monevideo Harbor, and of its explosive sinking less than two hours later.  It is stated that several thousand people were on the wharf watching the dramatic events just five miles out to sea.
The live radio coverage from Montevideo in Uruguay was fed from the waterside wharf by underwater cable and phone line to the new Transradio Receiver Station at La Dora San Martin near Buenos Aires in Argentina, and from thence to the Monte Grande Transmitter Station LSX for coverage to the United States and beyond.  Nationwide American coverage was obtained via 175 mediumwave stations operated by the two NBC networks, Red and Blue, and international coverage was provided  via shortwave stations WGEA and WGEO in Schenectady New York.
We should also add that all three of the British warships survived the Battle of the River Plate, though HMS Exeter was subsequently sunk three years later in the Second Battle of the Java Sea north of Australia in 1942.  Both HMS Ajax and the British made New Zealand vessel HMNZS Achilles survived World War 2.

The change will be effective 23 May. This is being done in response to listener requests. Our other two DRM blocks were moved from weekday to weekend slots for the same reason. In both previous cases, the number of listener reports spiked. We believe that most SW listeners greatly prefer weekends, so we hope to expand our audience further with this move.

Zambia
Zambia NBC, Radio 1. After days inactive on its usual frequency on 5915 kHz, the station today was using 5995 kHz, heard via TWR SDR in Johannesburg, South Africa, 0505-0608 UT, 06 May. News in English. Station identification "Radio 1", "Zambia Broadcasting Corporation." African songs, vernacular comments, mentioned "Coronavirus, Zambia.” Also checked with ZBC website at: https://www.znbc.co.zm/online Radio 1 program, 5995 kHz and online program matches.

Here in Lugo, north west of Spain, eclipsed by Radio Mali, Bamako on the same frequency. Radio Mali, 5995 kHz, opened today, 0605 UT, earlier than other days, at 0453 UT on air with African songs and identifications: "Radio Mali", "Radio Mali ... FM". Fair to good signal

If Zambia changes its frequency from 5915 to 5995 kHz, it will be very difficult to heard it here in Europe because in the early morning, late afternoon and night Radio Mali is on air on the same 5995 kHz frequency. (Manuel Mendez)

DX Central launches to the world

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, May 11, 2020

New Web site devoted to AM/FM DX has launched
Longtime DXer and Monitoring Times writer, Loyd Van Horn, launches DX Central

With FM DX season now upon us, longtime DXer and Monitoring Times writer, Loyd Van Horn (W4LVH), announces the launch of his new Web site, DX Central www.dxcentralonline.com. The site, which specializes in AM and FM DX, launched  Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at 0000 UTC (8:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time)

DX Central is the culmination of both what I have learned as a DXer through the past 30 years, as well as helping me to flush out all of the things I still want to learn,” says Van Horn. “There are many sites out there for AM and FM DXers, but I have always wished there was a site that taught the art of DX and helped cultivate that skill, as well as provided information on equipment from the perspective of the DXer, airchecks of station IDs and other things that would help flatten the learning curve a bit.”

One of the main components of DX Central is the DX 101 section which provides a primer for getting started in DXing, a glossary of DX-related terms, an FAQ and commonly used abbreviations.  It also includes breakout sections specific to AM and FM DXing.

“I wanted this to be a site where someone that didn’t even know what DX meant could be provided enough information to get them started.  At the same time, I wanted to make sure there was enough information there for experienced DXers to still find the site useful.”

There is also a blog with DX tips and tricks, up-to-date news and information and logs from Van Horn’s own DX pursuits from his home in Charleston, South Carolina as well as his travels.

“I try to bring an SDR with a small loop antenna with me when I travel.  My goal is to get as many pristine airchecks as I can from various cities so that other DXers can use that to compare with what they are hearing through their own radios.”

There are plans to expand the site with what Van Horn calls “phase II” in the coming months.

“There are some additional sections I am working through that just will not be ready in time for our launch date and the heart of FM DX season.  Those are all being worked up for phase II.”

Van Horn began as a DXer at an early age after growing up in a radio family. His father, Larry Van Horn (N5FPW) and mother, Gayle Van Horn (W4GVH) are both widely known in the DX community for their work with Monitoring Times and later, their self-published Kindle books under the banner of their publishing company, Teak Publishing.

After graduating from college, Van Horn spent nearly a decade in the media industry as an on-air personality, news director, assistant program director, public service coordinator, talk show host, sportscaster and advertising executive.

Van Horn later wrote for Monitoring Times as well, penning the monthly GlobalNet column devoted to online streaming of radio and television.  Van Horn used his broadcast experience to bring an insiders’ look into the trends and strategies of station’s online presence.

After Monitoring Times ceased production, Van Horn took some time out of the spotlight to get back to spending time in front of a radio, catching up on recent advancements in AM and FM DX technology and techniques.

He resides in Charleston, South Carolina with his wife, Megan and their dog, Ace.  He is an extra class amateur radio operator, trained Skywarn storm spotter, ARRL VEC examiner, and member of the National Radio Club, International Radio Club of America and Worldwide TV-FM DX Association.  When not DXing, he is also a musician with three albums released to-date and performs a solo acoustic show around the Charleston area (additional information is available on his music site:  www.loydvanhorn.com)

Shortwave Radiogram's weekend schedule

Hello friends,

For some of the Shortwave Radiogram transmissions last weekend, propagation was difficult. On other transmissions, reception was great. We can declare success if 90% of the MFSK32 text decodes correctly. That will often happen even under very difficult reception conditions.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 150) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC), UR1002 SWL in California (Sunday 0800 UTC 7730 kHz, segments decoded vy TIVAR), and Ralf in Germany (Sunday 2330-2400 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with nine MFSK64 images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 151, 9-10 May 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:42  MFSK32: Program preview
2:48  Asteroid's close encounter with a geosynchronous satellite
7:17  MFSK64: Antarctica and Greenland's shrinking ice sheets*
14:04  This week's images*
28:17  MFSK32: Closing announcements

Sunday 2330-2400 UTC 7780 kHz WRMI Florida

The Mighty KBC transmits to North America Sundays at 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 EDT) on 9925 kHz, via Germany. (Reception on this summer frequency was difficult last weekend. Let's hope it improves this weekend. If not, the audio stream is at https://www.kbcradio.eu/ .) A minute of MFSK is at about 0130 UTC.  Reports to Eric: themightykbc@gmail.com . See also http://www.kbcradio.eu/ and https://www.facebook.com/TheMightyKbc/.

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . Also look for a waterfall ID at the beginning of the show. thisisamusicshow@gmail.com .  www.twitter.com/ThisIsAMusicSho/ @ThisIsAMusicSho

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!

Encore's usual broadcast on 6070 kHz at 19:00 UTC Friday will continue to be simulcast on 3955 kHz. (NB - at the time of writing - 18:30 UTC Friday 8th May) - this is already being broadcast - an hour early... Not sure why or if it will be repeated at 19:00 UTC
It is, of course,  the final repeat of the previous Saturday's show.
We are also trying 3955 at 21:00 UTC on Sundays - when it will be mostly dusk or dark and so good propagation is expected.
Channel 292 will be interested in reception reports for 3955 kHz - info@channel292.de

Our email is  encoretumbril@gmail.com. Informal reception reports as well as those requesting eQSL welcome.
The website is www.tumbril.co.uk where we show transmission times and frequencies, the playlist for the most recent programme, more information about Radio Tumbril, and the email link.

This week the programme has plenty of woodwind. The adagio for English horn by Mozart, a quartet featuring the English horn, and part of a wind quintet by Danzi - all gentle and soothing.
Also, there will be a motet by Leonel Power, a Bach solo piano piece, part of a Bloch String quartet and some more contemporary composition from Stefania de Kenessay. Let me know what you think.

The new playlist and the previous one are now on the website - www.tumbril.co.uk

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.
A very good site for online SDR receivers all over the world is: http://kiwisdr.com/public/  Click the 'Map' button in the top left of the screen.

In the meantime - thank you for spreading the word about Encore - Classical Music on Shortwave on Radio Tumbril.

Radio Pilipinas heard again on shortwave

Radyo Pilipinas QSL (Gayle Van Horn Collection)
You may have noticed in the Global Radio Guide (Summer 2020), that Radio Pilipinas was missing from the by-hour schedules. Just prior to last weeks publication, I received information that the station had left shortwave, and the entry was deleted from the database.

This morning, DX Bulgaria posted the following schedule, from May 1, and the station is being heard again. My apologies for any confusion.

Absolute Radio plans special programming for VE Anniversary on May 8

Absolute Radio is running a 24-hour pop up station next month on 08 May, playing jazz, swing and big band music from the 1940s to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The service will broadcast across the UK on 1215AM in place of the main Absolute Radio station for the day, and will also be on DAB in London.

Absolute Radio 40s is being paid for through the Audio Content Fund, which is supporting the initiative as part of its special funding to support audiences during the Coronavirus restrictions. Events around the UK to mark the anniversary of VE Day on 8th May have been postponed because of the current social distancing rules.

[Presumably this will be on all of Absolute Radio’s medium wave transmitters on 1197, 1215, 1233, 1242 and 1260 kHz

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 April - 03 May 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Four new-cycle sunspot groups were numbered this period, the most prominent of which was Region 2760 (S07, L=307, class/area=Cro/20 on 30 Apr). No significant solar flare activity was observed.

A filament eruption from the northern hemisphere midday on 27 Apr resulted in a very slow-moving CME. Modeling of the event suggested the CME may arrive at Earth on 02-03 May. A solar wind disturbance commensurate with the passage of a weak, slow-moving transient was detected on 03 May, however, the source of this disturbance is inconclusive at the time of this writing.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was generally quiet and quiet to unsettled this period under a largely nominal solar wind environment. Isolated unsettled activity late on 03 May is thought to be associated with the passage of the 27 Apr CME.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 04 May - 30 May 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very quiet throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be generally quiet or quiet-to-unsettled throughout the outlook period.

New Program: ALT UNIVERSE TOP 40 - WRMI 9455 kHz
Written and produced by Indie Rock veteran John McMullan of The Trend, Alt Universe Top 40 is a genre-hopping weekly radio countdown that combines real-life chart achievements with “good-hearted adjustments that time and taste demand.”

With each hour-long show, the listener learns a few tidbits about familiar songs, and is gently introduced to music that SHOULD be familiar. In John’s world, The Beatles are still the “toppermost of the poppermost,” but, not far behind the Fab Four are deserving underground rock acts such as Good Question, Fools Face, and a number of other bands that turned in amazing records that were not exactly commercially successful.

Each show begins with a song that, at some point, was perched at number forty on one of the three major American charts, or in England or Australia. As the countdown continues, the musical selections include a song that should have made the Top 20, but did not; a single that charted at #11 in real life; a “should have been” Top 10; a Number 9, number 9, number 9…; something that is “modern and great” and should have reached number 8; a Little Slice of Heaven at Number 7; and the rest of the countdown filled out with bonus hits, a 3 from “Way Downtown,” and a Hall of Perfection Track.

Having designed the program specifically for Shortwave, McMullan draws inspiration from a variety of sources. He composed the opening fanfare and vocal jingles throughout the show by changing the lyrics to the chorus of the Trend classic he wrote in 1982, “Mama Thought You Were a Nice Girl.”

The stories are usually trivia for chart nerds, but, with his music days never too far from his mind, McMullan throws in personal memories from time to time. There are AM hits, FM album hits, and jazz & blues selections that are only heard these days on public radio. Give Alt Universe Top 40 a listen, and you will certainly, as he says each week, “Keep on smiling through the static!”

You can hear Alt Universe Top 40 Saturdays at 10 pm Eastern Time (currently 0200 UTC Sunday) on 9455 kHz, and Sundays at 9 pm Eastern Time (currently 0100 UTC Monday) on 9395 kHz.
