Celtic Music AM awarded community radio license in Glasgow

UK communications regulator Ofcom has awarded a five-year community radio licence to Celtic Music AM. Earlier this year, Celtic Music Radio completed its second Restricted Service Licence operation for Celtic Connections 2007 with broadcasts on 106.6 FM to parts of Glasgow.

Ofcom announced that there no available fulltime FM frequencies in the Glasgow area, so Celtic Music Radio applied to operate on mediumwave. That application has now been granted, though the frequency to be used hasn’t been announced yet.

Celtic Music Radio intends to be a strong cultural voice for contemporary and traditional Scottish music and song, pioneering new frontiers in communication and broadcasting by including people that do not have access to mainstream media; to minority organisations which promote Gaelic arts and culture in Glasgow.

The service aims to advance education, in particular by promoting the performance, learning and appreciation of a broad spectrum of Celtic music; to enhance the understanding of this genre of music and be pro-active in the development of the rich heritage of Celtic music.
