Monitoring Syria on shortwave

Re your post "Monitoring Radio Damascus on Shortwave", I listened to the initial ten or fifteen minutes of the station's German and English broadcasts on 9330 kHz last night GMT (August 1, 18:05 and 21:10 GMT respectively). Both broadcasts seem to begin somewhat earlier - closer to the full hour - than scheduled. The German broadcast was affected by complete signal failings many times (appeared to be power failures, but that's just my personal guess), and spoken lines were otherwise only occasionally intelligible. English came in with a stronger signal - constantly O=3, except when the signal disappeared completely, too. But that happened less frequently than with the German broadcast three hours earlier.

Radio Damascus, Adra, 9330.00 at 2150-2235 UTC, (July 28). English with Arab string music in background. News summary, but the modulation was so poor, that only a few words could be caught.

Hymn at 2200 to station ID and schedule in Spanish. Additional station identification as, ”Radio Dimasque de la Republica de Syria,” mentions about Syria and Palestine.

Transmitter fade out for three minutes and returned as mention of ”boletin de información.” Obviously the same old transmitter with a very strong signal (S 9+30 dB), but severe transmitter hum and poor modulation. SINPO 53242.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 23 - 29 July 2012

Solar activity was at very low to high levels through the period. The summary period began at very low to low levels from 23 - 26 July, with multiple low level C-class events observed. An increase to moderate levels was observed on 27 July, as Region 1532 (S22, L= 183, class/area Fho/510 on 28 July) produced an M2/Sf x-ray event at 1726 UTC. Associated with this event were distinct radio frequency bursts as well as a Type II (estimated shock speed of 2099 km/s) and Type IV Radio sweeps, as well as a coronal mass ejection (CME). After careful analysis, the associated CME was determined to not be Earth directed. On 28 July, and increase to high levels was observed as Region 1532 produced an M6/2n x-ray flare at 28/2056 UTC.

Associated with this event were both Type II (estimated shock speed of 1387 km/s) and Type IV radio sweeps, discrete radio frequency spikes, and a 370 sfu Tenflare. Imagery supported a CME liftoff with this event, however due to the location of Region 1532, very little effects are expected at Earth. On the last day of the forecast period, 29 July, a return to moderate levels was observed, as Region 1532 produced an M2/1n x-ray event at 29/0622 UTC.

A greater than 10 MeV proton event at geosynchronous orbit began at 23/1545 UTC, reached a maximum flux of 12 pfu at 23/2145 UTC, and ended at 24/1800 UTC. This event was due to flare activity from old Region 1520 (S16, L=086) which was almost 40 degrees beyond the west limb.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels from 23 - 28 July. A decrease to moderate levels was observed on 29 July.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet to unsettled levels throughout the summary period with isolated periods of minor storm levels observed at high latitudes on 23, 24, and 28 July. Activity on 23 July was at quiet to unsettled levels with solar wind speeds, as measured by the ACE spacecraft, hovering around 450 km/s. On 24 July, solar wind speeds increased to almost 600 km/s, as a coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS), became geoeffective. With these elevated solar winds, quiet to unsettled levels were observed with an isolated period at minor storm levels observed at high latitudes. As effects of the CH HSS waned, solar wind speeds declined and remained between 380 and 500 km/s for the remainder of the period. With solar wind speeds around nominal levels, mostly quiet to unsettled levels also prevailed through 29 July.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 July - 25 August 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels from 30 July - 15 August as Region 1532 and old Region 1520 (S16, L=086) rotate across the visible disk. A decrease to mostly low levels is expected from 16 - 23 August. As Region 1532 rotates back onto the visible disk on 23 August, an increase to low to moderate levels is expected for the remainder of the forecast period.

A greater than 10 MeV proton event at geosynchronous orbit is possible from 30 July - 18 August as Region 1532 and old Region 1520 traverse the visible disk.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the period since most of the coronal hole structures have dissipated.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at predominantly quiet levels from 30 July - 19 August and 22 - 23 August. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected from 20 - 21 August and 24 - 25 August as weak CH HSS become geoeffective.

We would like our former listeners clubs to recover, because the East German state and its people's property has been resolved, but not its people.

A few words about us:
RBI Radio Berlin International was founded in 1959 as an international voice of the workers 'and peasants' government of the German Democratic Republic. On 10.02.1990 there was 24-hour long broadcast.
After several years of preparations, are former employees of RBI Radio Berlin International in July 2012 24-hour test started broadcasting programs which can be heard worldwide at:

Radio Free Asia's Olympic Panda QSL

RFA Offers the Olympic Panda
To commemorate the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, Radio Free Asia is offering a special Panda bear QSL card.
The card is a reproduction of the Olympic pin that two RFA reporters will carry to London during coverage of the Olympics. This is also the third panda pin and QSL design, that began in 2008 with the Bejing Olympics. All valid reception reports will be confirmed from July 1-August 31, 2012. Tropical Reefs on the Brink: 85 percent of the world’s coral reefs are under threat, which means thousands of fish species could lose their habitat. One of the biggest threats is cyanide fishing; it catches large numbers of fish but kills the coral. Indonesia exports more fish caught by cyanide fishing than any other country. It’s part of the Coral Triangle, which covers six countries and includes the world’s most diverse reefs and it is crucial to stop the destruction. Experts say action is needed fast. Last week they came together at the International Coral Reef Symposium in Australia to look for solutions. Doddy Rosadi joined them in the northern city of Cairns.

Korea’s Iron Lady for President: South Korea’s Park Geun-hye says she’ll run to become the nation’s first female president in next December’s election, but is this a step forward for the country or a step back? She’s the daughter of the late military dictator President Park Chung-hee. Many credit him with kick-starting Korea’s economic growth in the 1960s, but he also cracked down on civil rights and democratic freedoms. Park still has to win her party’s nomination next month but polling on likely presidential candidates show she’s in the lead. However, some say she’s going to have a tough time winning over progressive voters, and especially young women. Jason Strother reports from Seoul.

Indian Kids on a Tightrope: India has the highest number of child workers in the world, and 60 million of them don’t go to school. India’s Constitution prohibits employing children under 14 years old but many of these kids earn desperately needed income for their families; and almost no child is too young. Jasvinder Sehgal meets 4-year old Arjun Ram, the breadwinner for his family.

Dealing with the Dead in Malaysia: Malaysia’s Malacca state has been a cultural crossroads for centuries. Its strategic location along one of the world’s busiest shipping routes made it a prize for merchants and colonists alike. Cultures from across the world mixed here and remain along with local rituals which include customs and religious beliefs around death. Clarence Chua finds out just how Malaccans deal with their dead.

This week's show is featuring a novelist Colson Whitehead. His novel, "Zone One", is now out in paperback. It's a post-apocalyptic tale of Manhattan crippled by a plague and overrun with zombies. His previous novels include "The Intuitionist" about intrigue in the Department of Elevator Inspectors, and "John Henry Days" about the American folklore figure. It was a finalist for the national Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
