Then the broadcast speeds up to MFSK64 (240 wpm) for two VOA News stories with images, plus an image of me shoveling snow.

Tribute to WYFR: The Wartime Years and Beyond

On the previous occasion when we presented an episode in the historic backgrounds of shortwave station WYFR, we came to the year 1942.  At this stage, there were just three transmitters on the air at the newly developed shortwave station located at Hatherly Beach, near Scituate in coastal Massachusetts.  These transmitters were on the air with 20 kW as WRUL & WRUW, and WRUS at 5 kW.  Under construction and not yet fully completed at this time were two 50 kW transmitters that could be combined for a total output power of 100 kW.
Our story today covers the events that took place in the unfolding history of this large radio station and its service with the Voice of America during the wartime years, and into the first years of the new peace time back in the middle of last century.
Actually, even before the entry of the United States into World War II and the formation of the Voice of America, station WRUL was on the air with special programming on behalf of the United States government.  Back in September 1939, WRUL began transmitting programming beamed towards Europe in co-operation with the British Security Commission which had established an office in New York City.
Then, in April 1940, WRUL made a series of shortwave broadcasts on behalf of the western powers, urging all Norwegian ships still at sea to head towards neutral or allied ports.  Later in the same year, WRUL began programming in the Norwegian language on behalf of the Royal Norwegian Information Services in New York City.
Special programming in the Arabic language began on February 9, 1942.  Several of the regular programs produced and broadcast by WRUL, together with the other two transmitters WRUW & WRUS, were relayed by the BBC in London and by the Free French station in the Congo, Radio FZI in Brazzaville.  
When the United States government, under the newly formed OWI, Office of War Information, negotiated with the active shortwave stations on the air at the time for a takeover, Walter Lemmon at WRUL fiercely resisted.  It is stated that Walter Lemmon’s loyalty was not questioned; he just wished to retain his station as an independent unit.  During those years, station WRUL was on the air in 24 languages, beamed to Europe, Africa and Latin America.
All of the other shortwave stations in America were taken over on November 1, 1942, and under this agreement, they were still operated by their owners on behalf of the American government. Programming was still produced by many of these stations, though now under the purview of OWI.  
Three days later, at 3:30 pm on November 4, the FCC and the Board of War Communication signed an Order in Washington DC requiring the closure of WRUL and a takeover by the government.  At the same time next day, Thursday November 5, federal agents moved in, entered the station, and officially closed it down.  The program line from their new studios in New York City was cut, and the station went silent.
Next day, OWI programming was fed to WRUL, and the station became an effective part of the newly developing Voice of America network.  That was Friday November 6, 1942.
Then two days later, Sunday November 8, the United States navy carried out its initial invasion of North Africa.  The battle ship USS “Texas” was already off the Atlantic coast of Morocco near Rabat with a 5 kW mediumwave transmitter tuned to 601 kHz.
At 4:30 am local time, the untested ship board transmitter was activated and fed with live programming from its own studio, as well as with off air relays from the BBC London and OWI from the United States.  Shortwave WRUL at Hatherly Beach was now on the air with a co-operative relay of this concerted OWI programming.
That same evening, WRUL was on the air to Latin America with the news of the day, and the list of transmitters shows that the old 5 kW WRUS was now relicensed as WRUX.  The new 50 kW WRUS, still under installation, was now on the air for this broadcast to Latin America, though apparently only on a temporary basis.
In April of the next year, 1943, the FCC cancelled the license for the 5 kW callsign WRUS; and
on May 1, the new 50 kW WRUS was ready for programming.  The additional 50 kW WRUA was ready for programming in the middle of the month, May 15.  Both WRUS & WRUA were combined at times into a single 100 kW unit, usually under the single callsign WRUA.
The old 5 kW WRUS when reactivated as WRUX, was in use for the relay of news bulletins in Morse Code; and later, when a new power amplifier at 80 kW was added, it was noted with regular programming on behalf of the Voice of America.  During this era, the WRUL transmitters were on the air radiating from five rhombic antennas beamed towards Europe, Africa and Latin America.
  During the year 1947, Walter Lemmon gained the right to program his stations at 25% of the time, with VOA-AFRS programming at 75%.  In anticipation of the return of WRUL to its own programming, Walter Lemmon held a celebration at the Boston studios at 133 Commonwealth Avenue on February 7.  However, this matter was not fully settled until mid year as part of the Smith-Mundt Act before Congress.
A new set of callsigns appeared for the shortwave transmitters at Scituate in August 1950, and these were finally formalized by the FCC on January 1, 1951.  Instead of a different callsign for each transmitter, they were all bundled together under the one callsign WRUL, with a suffix number indicating each specific unit.  These are the details of the new consolidated callsigns:-

The date for the end of official service with the Voice of America and the Armed Forces Radio Service, VOA & AFRS, was set for June 30, 1953.  Beginning next day, WRUL was now back into full private ownership with only its own programming.  However, in spite of this declaration, station WRUL continued to relay some of the VOA and AFRS programming, for the next six years.
That’s where we pick up the story again next time.

VOA Radiogram Weekend Schedule


VOA Radiogram for the weekend of 18-19 January 2014 will include the MFSK32, MFSK64, and MFSK64L (long interleave version of MFSK64) modes.

Please note that MFSK64L text does not begin to display until a few seconds after the tones are heard.

The Flmsg 1.1.33AC alpha version works with the MFSK64L mode. Our experiment this weekend will try this combination, so please download Flmsg 1.1.33AC from http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/flmsg/ .  Also, in Fldigi: Configure > Misc > NBEMS  -- Under Reception of flmsg files, check both boxes, and under that indicate where your Flmsg.exe 1.1.33AC file is located.

One difference this weekend is that the program preview will be in MFSK32 (120 wpm) rather than MFSK16 (55 wpm). We will try MFSK32 for the preview during the next few weekends. MFSK16 is useful in very poor shortwave conditions, so we might want to bring this mode back in the future.

Ancient DX Report: 1906


During the year 1906, the ether was fairly buzzing with the Morse Code signals from wireless stations located on land all around the world, as well as on board ships in all seven of the world’s great oceans.  In fact, the first edition of a wireless directory was published by the United States Navy on October 1 of 1906 under the title Wireless Telegraph Stations of the World, and this directory is considered to be the very first comprehensive listing of official stations ever published.
            By taking a count from all available sources, it is estimated that there were more than 500 official wireless stations on land in more than 70 different countries, with well over 1,000 on board ships.  These listings are for official stations only, and there were an additional uncounted number of other stations on the air as well, including many amateur stations for which licensing was not required at that time.  Perhaps there was somewhere around 3,000 wireless stations on the air during this era.
            During the year 1906, three notable inventions altered the flow of wireless/radio development:-
                        * General Dunwoodie of the American army invented the crystal detector, know known                            widely as the cat’s whisker, which enabled tuned radio reception
                          * Lee de Forest patented a 3 element radio tube or valve, the audion as he called it, thus                         opening the way for a much wider usage of the vacuum tube in radio                                 development
                          * Archie Collins patented voice transmissions via an electric arc
     
            An important wireless conference took place in Berlin during the year, beginning October 2, with 100 delegates from 23 countries participating.  At this convention, the usage of a new emergency code was adopted, SOS, replacing the previous CQD.  The name radio was also adopted, replacing the earlier term wireless. 
            At this convention, a list of international callsign prefixes was drawn up, and letters of the alphabet were allocated to each country.  For example, wireless station callsigns beginning with the letter G indicated Great Britain, the letter J indicated Japan, the letters N & W indicated the United States.     
            We should note also that the Telefunken company established a wireless station near Nauen, in a swampland area some 25 miles north west of Berlin, during this year. 
            (This station at Nauen is still on the air today, with the programming of Adventist World Radio, including our DX program Wavescan which is heard from this station every Sunday at 1530 UTC on 11750 kHz at 250 kW.  In addition, our sister DX program in the Italian language is also heard from Nauen each Sunday at 1000 UTC on 9610 kHz at 100 kW.)
            The most intense usage of wireless anywhere in the world during the year 1906 took place in the United States, where its is recorded that more than 100 stations were on the air, operated by the navy and the army, and also by several different commercial organizations. 
            In order to establish a flow of communication after the devastating earthquake in San Francisco on April 18 and the massive fires that followed, the navy vessel USS “Chicago” handled an outward flow of messages in Morse Code from San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island thence to Mare Island and  onward to the nationwide system of landline connections.  The fires also destroyed the wireless station PH in the Palace Hotel and it was re-established at nearby Russian Hill. 
            Marconi engineers warned that their Atlantic coast wireless station was endangered by cliff erosion; and the  transmission towers operated by Pacific Wireless on Mt Tamalpais near San Francisco were felled by a jealous competitor.
            On January 1, the Canadian born Reginald Fessenden established wireless communication from his new station at Brant Rock, 2 kW on 100 kHz, with his equally new station at Micrahanish in Scotland; but, this Scottish station was destroyed in a storm in December.
            On December 21, 1906, Reginald Fessenden presented a public demonstration of his wireless equipment with an experimental broadcast before an invited group of local dignitaries.  This event is definitely and clearly chronicled in the verified details of history.
            In question though, are Fessenden’s touted Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve broadcasts from this same station a few days later.  Much evidence has been piled up, both for and against, the accuracy of Fessenden’s subsequent claims that he did indeed make these two intentional radio broadcasts, as historical firsts.
            However, several maritime historians provide an item of information that does not seem to get quoted by researchers delving into the Fessenden controversy.  These maritime historians state that the wireless operator aboard the new American passenger liner “Kroonland” heard Fessenden’s Christmas Eve broadcast while out in nearby Atlantic waters.  It is true, the ”Kroonland” report could be revisionist history, but further research might also reveal the veracity of this claim.
            A postcard dated June 14, 1906, shows the Lee De Forest wireless station at 42 Broadway in New York, and it contains the hand written message: “Aboard steamer on ocean we just received message about weather reports by wireless.”  This card might almost qualify as an early QSL. 
            On November 1, the Christchurch International Exhibition in New Zealand opened at Hagley Park, with 400 acres of international displays and exhibits from all around the world.  This Christchurch exhibition was visited by two million people, citizens and international visitors, before closure on April 15 of the following year 1907.  It should be remembered that the total population of New Zealand itself was only one million at the time.
            Two Marconi representatives, Captain Walker and Engineer Dowsett, established two wireless stations, one at the Christchurch exhibition in Hagley Park and the other at a distance several miles away.  Newspapers in both Australia and New Zealand announced in advance that a wireless exhibit would be staged at the Christchurch International Exhibition.
            Two early experimenters in Australia were Mr. C. P. Bartholomew and Mr. E. F. G. Jolley, both of whom constructed their own equipment.  Bartholomew lived in the Sydney suburb of Mossman; and Jolley set up two wireless stations in two houses one mile apart in the country town Marlborough, 100 miles north west of the state capital Melbourne. 
            There was also an experimental set of wireless equipment on board a local steamer at sea between Mt Nelson and Tasman Island, off the coast of Tasmania.
            The big wireless event in Australia during the year 1906 was the two way transmission of signals between Victoria and Tasmania, a distance of 150 miles across Bass Strait.  And that story is scheduled for presentation here in Wavescan a few weeks from now.

72nd Anniversary: International Encounter on the High Seas


The Radio Scene
In two previous editions of Wavescan, we have presented the story of the chance encounter on the high seas in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia between the German raider HSK “Kormoran” and the Australian light cruiser HMAS “Sydney”. This fire fight took place on Wednesday afternoon, November 19, 1941, just 72 years ago.  As a result of a fierce battle lasting just one hour, both ships sank with a total loss of life for the “Sydney”, and a little less than one hundred casualties for the “Kormoran”.
            Over the years, because of the poignancy of these tragic circumstances, several searches by sea and by air have been made in an attempt to locate the wrecks of both ships lying on the sea bottom.  During March 2008, both the “Kormoran” and the “Sydney” were located by David Mearns aboard the search vessel SV “Geosounder”.
            The wreckages of the two ships lie about twelve miles part, 130 miles off the Western Australian coastline out from Shark Bay and Carnarvon, at a depth of one and one-half miles.  The “Kormoran” broke apart, with two large pieces three-fourths miles apart and a large oval shaped debris field in between.  The bow of the “Sydney” broke off though the main hull sits on the seabed upright.
            Official inquiries into the fate of the “Sydney” and the “Kormoran” have brought to light many reports of radio messages from both ships on that tragic day in 1941.  More than a dozen radio messages have been reported, and some people claim to have heard voice messages, while others lay claim to having heard messages in Morse Code.  Some of these reports indicate that genuine radio transmissions were indeed heard, while the reports from others are considered to be spurious.
            For example, a group of five people in the Esplanade Hotel in Geraldton Western Australia heard a strong transmission in voice mode on 24.5 m (12245 kHz) with reference to a coming Morse message.  This message was heard on a standard radio receiver and research would suggest that this signal was actually a break through transmission from nearby Geraldton Radio, VIN, with subsequent information about the HMAS “Sydney” from Sydney Radio VIS, not the ship “Sydney” itself. 
            A similar report came from nearby Port Gregory where members of the Rob family heard a break through transmission.  Other voice reports came from Fremantle Radio, near Perth, also from Hobart in Tasmania, and from Singapore, and from continental Africa.
            Reports of Morse Code reception from the “Sydney” came from several different locations, including three different locations in Western Australia; and also from Singapore and from the British navy radio station at Kilindini in Kenya, Africa.  The most notable of these Morse Code reports came from Hetty Collings, a 16 year old English girl, serving as a cypher clerk with the British navy in Singapore.  She claimed to have translated a cypher signal that was sent from the “Sydney” in Morse Code.  However, the contents of the message and the timings indicate that her report is incorrect.
            A careful analysis of all of these already mentioned radio transmissions from the “Sydney” and the “Komoran” indicate that all of them seem to be inaccurate, due to timings and content. 
            It has been suggested that the German supply ship, “Kulmerland”, was in Morse Code contact with its compatriot “Kormoran” during the battle, though this is also totally unsubstantiated.
            It should be noted that the “Sydney” carried five radio transmitters; four on the ship and one in the Walrus plane, and all of them for Morse Code only.  It is clearly demonstrated that there was no voice transmitter aboard the “Sydney”.  The “Kormoran” carried two Morse Code transmitters and four receivers.
            So what are considered to be the genuine transmissions associated with these two armed and aggressive vessels?  We take all of these proven transmissions in chronological order, all of them in the year 1941, and all times in local time:-

1. November 11, Tuesday 1332:
            * Last wireless transmission from “Sydney”, just before leaving Fremantle on escort duty with                  the Australian transport ship SS “Zealandia”; “Sydney” maintained radio silence from this                    time onwards; no subsequent transmissions whatsoever.

2. November 19, Wednesday 1703:
            * “Kormoran” sent spurious message in Morse Code, QQQQ indicating suspected disguised                    raider, and gave its own false identity as the Dutch cargo vessel, “Straat Malakka”; 200                watt signal on 500 kHz.
3. November 19, Wednesday 1705:
            * Repeat of same message.  This message was heard by Perth Radio VIP Applecross, and also              by Geraldton Radio VIN, and also by the tug boat “Uco”.  VIN reception very poor and                       without full detail.  VIN asked for further information from other ships also, but no further                    messages received.  Tug boat ST “Uco”, Adelaide Steamship Co in Fremantle, also                 expressed similar poor and partial reception.  At the time it was more than 100 miles                 south west of the combat zone, en route from Darwin to Fremantle.
            * Captain Theodor Detmers aboard “Kormoran” expresses surprise that “Sydney” does not talk                with “Komoran” by radio (in Morse Code).  He was not aware that the “Sydney” was                 under radio silence.

4. November 19, Wednesday 1730:
            * Barrage from “Sydney” hit “Kormoran” radio shack

5. November 23, Sunday: 
            * Navy headquarters orders “Sydney” to break radio silence and give battle details; all                   shortwave communication stations ordered to attempt contact with “Sydney”.

6. November 24, Monday:
            * British tanker “Trocus” picks up some survivors, gives radio report regarding battle events.


            From this time onwards, it was progressively known throughout Australia, and thus throughout the world, the tragic events of the fierce conflict between HSK “Kormoran” and HMAS “Sydney”, a battle that was fought in radio silence on the high seas, and which both sides lost, and neither side won.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 - 12 January 2014

Solar activity ranged from low to high levels during the period. Low levels were observed on 06 January and again from 09-12 January with the majority of the solar flare activity originating from Regions 1944 (S09, L=101, class/area Fkc/1560 on 08 January), 1946 (N09, L=103, class/area Dkc/530 on 10 January), and 1947 (N11, L=180, class/area Cro/030 on 06 January). High levels were reached on 07 January due to an M1/1n flare at 07/0353 UTC from Region 1946, an M7/2b flare at 07/1013 UTC with an associated Tenflare (Castelli-U) radio burst (409 sfu) from Region 1944, and an X1/2n at 07/1832 UTC also from Region 1944. The X1 flare was associated with a Type II radio sweep (1064 km/s), a 8300 sfu Tenflare, and a partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) with an approximate speed ranging from 1800 km/s to 2100 km/s. Model output of the CME indicated an Earth-directed component; however the impact on the geomagnetic field was significantly less than expected (see geomagnetic field activity below). By 08 January, solar activity decreased to moderate levels due to an isolated M3/Sf flare from Region 1947 at 08/0347 UTC on the west limb. The M3 flare was accompanied by a Type II radio sweep (697 km/s) and a non-Earth directed CME. Region 1944 was one of the largest sunspot groups in solar cycle 24, maintained a Fkc spot class with a complex beta-gamma-delta magnetic classification for the majority of the period, as well as reaching an impressive 1,560 millionths of areal coverage. By 09 January and through the rest of the reporting period the sunspot group was in a slow decay phase. 

The period began with the greater than 10 MeV proton flux recovering from last weeks enhancement likely associated with an M4 flare from Region 1944 late on 04 January. At 06/0820 UTC, both the greater than 10 MeV and 100 MeV proton flux levels began to rise in response to flare activity beyond the west limb from old Region 1936 (S15, L=225) which rotated off the visible disk on 04 January. The greater than 10 MeV protons crossed the 10 pfu (S1 Minor) threshold at 06/0915 UTC and reached a maximum of 42 pfu at 06/1600 UTC before slowly declining to 10.1 pfu by 07/1930 UTC. The greater than 100 MeV protons crossed the 1 pfu threshold at 06/0830 UTC and reached a maximum of 4 pfu at 06/1005 UTC. 

The event ended at 06/1710 UTC. By 07/1935 UTC, another influx of energetic particles was observed by GOES 13 related to the X1 flare from Region 1944 at 07/1832 UTC. The 10 MeV proton flux levels were still above the 10 pfu threshold at this time and increased to a maximum of 1033 pfu (S3-Moderate) at 09/0340 UTC before slowly returning below the 10 pfu threshold by 11/2020 UTC. However, there were some fluctuations in the greater than 10 MeV protons early on 12 January with a couple readings above the 10 pfu threshold. The greater than 100 MeV proton event associated with the X-flare reached the 1 pfu threshold at 07/2030 UTC, reached a maximum of 4 pfu at 07/2240 UTC, and ended at 08/1225 UTC. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at mostly normal to moderate levels during the period with high levels (2690 pfu) briefly reached on 07 January before the instrument became contaminated due to high proton flux levels late on 07 January through 09 January. By 10 January, electron flux levels recovered and remained in the normal to moderate range for the rest of the period. 

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels during the period. The geomagnetic field began the period at quiet levels until after mid-day 07 January when a sudden increase in temperature, speed, density, and total field measurements were observed in ACE SWEPAM data indicating the arrival of the 04 January CME. Solar wind speed increased from approximately 350 km/s to 435 km/s with the total field increasing from 3 nT to 7 nT at 07/1428 UTC. This small shock and CME resulted in several periods of unsettled levels late on 07 January through early on 08 January.

Quiet to unsettled levels continued through 09 January. Late on 09 January, the anticipated arrival of the CME associated with the X1 flare on 07 January arrived at the ACE spacecraft at 09/1932 UTC with a less than expected solar wind increase of from approximately 400 km/s to near 527 km/s. Total field measurements increased from 6 nT to 16 nT with the Bz component mostly north between -4 nT and +10 nT. A small sudden impulse (12 nT) was observed in the Fresno magnetometer data at 09/2010 UTC. An isolated unsettled period was observed late on 09 January as a result of CME activity. Nominal solar wind condition continued through late on 12 January with mostly quiet conditions observed. By late on 12 January, a negative polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) began to impact the geomagnetic field. Solar wind speeds increased from approximately 480 km/s to near 680 km/s by the end of the period. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled to active levels by late on 12 January. 

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 January - 08 February 2014

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class flare activity until Region 1944 rotates off the west limb on 14 January. Very low to low levels are expected from 15-16 January. Low levels with a chance for M-class flare activity is expected from 17 January through 08 February as old Regions 1936 and 1944 return on 17 January and 26 January, respectively. 

There is a chance for a greater than 10 MeV proton event from 26 January through 08 February when Region 1944 returns on the visible disk assuming it retains its magnetic complexity. 

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels with high levels possible from 14-17 January, 29 January, and 03-05 February due to CH HSS activity and recurrence. 

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be mostly quiet with unsettled to active period possible on 13 January, 23-24 January, 28-30 January, and again on 07-08 February due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

This is a "set it and forget it" program. All content, include the program preview, will be in MFSK32, on the usual 1500 Hz center frequency. You won't have to worry about mode changes. And there won't be any Flmsg. You can tune in this program, set your software to MFSK32, make sure the first few line decode correctly, go do something else for a half hour, then look at the results later. The two images will be stored in the folder \fldigi.files\images somewhere on your hard drive.

Program 41 will consist of press releases from the Broadcasting Board of Governors, parent agency of the Voice of America:

At 0930:25 nice ID and mention of national radio and upcoming "Countdown" by live studio male DJ. Getting very fady after 0920. 5985.84, Myanma Radio, Yegu. Yangon, not on air at 1030. (Bueschel). But heard at *1129, Dec 27, open carrier at 1127. On with indigenous theme music in vernacular. Frequently changing transmitter here! On Dec 25 heard Naypyidaw on 5985.00. (Howard). Heard on remote unit in Sri Lanka at 1147, Dec 28, singer group on air. Strength only S=8-9. (Bueschel).

Also heard on 5985.87, 1527-1530, Dec 24. Traditional Burmese music, 1530 into English with ID, frequencies (announced 5985 kHz), and then news, 43343, somewhat muffled audio. (Sellers)

6164.99, Thazin Radio, Pyin U Lwin, 1022-1141, Dec 28. Nice girl singing, S=7-8 signal improving to S=9+20dB noted on SDR remote unit in Colombo. (Bueschel). Also heard at 1430, Dec 24 and Jan 04, English, introductory music and then woman with “good evening” greeting. Station ID, frequencies and English pop song. At 1435:30 woman back and into news and weather, 1442 song “Last Christmas” by George Michael and WHAM! SINPO 33433, QRM from CNR6. (Sellers)

7200.103, Myanma Radio, Yegu, Yangon, 1008, Dec 27. Quick check found them fair. (Howard). Also heard at 1026-1210, Dec 28, S=8-9 fluttery signal improving to S=9+15dB in Sri Lanka. At 1030 no ±15 kHz spurs either side this time ! But at 1210 also observed the two accompanied spurious on exact ±14249 Hertz away either side, stronger on 7185.854, but also on 7214.353 next to CRI Russian powerhouse. (Bueschel)

7345.0, Thazin Radio, Pyin U Lwin, 1025-1204, Dec 28. Local girl in scheduled Kachin language. S=9+15dB signal improving to S=9+20dB noted on remote receiver in Sri Lanka. (Bueschel)

9459.90, Thazin Radio, Pyin U Lwin, 0438, Dec 28. Burmese heard at proper S=9 signal level on remote unit on Sri Lanka. Modern pop music with local South Asian tone flavor.  (Bueschel)

9590.0, Thazin Radio, Pyin U Lwin, *0430, Dec 28. Strong carrier, start of typical Burmese national domestic program in Lhao, a lot of xylophone music. Signal S=8-9. Also noted a few seconds on air by probably technical check of the engineer at 1011, on remote receiver unit in Sri Lanka. (Bueschel)

9730.80v, Myanma Radio, Yegu, Yangon, 1010, Dec 27. Heard with slight drift. A check at 1103 found they had switched transmitter to Nay Pyi Taw on exactly 9730.00. Really in a state of flux! (Howard). Also heard on 9730.82 on remote post in Sri Lanka, at 0425, Dec 28. Dance music box and nice Burmese girl singer, fair level S=8-9. Also heard at 1005, Dec 28, with music phone-in program, S=9+10dB signal noted on SDR remote unit in Colombo. (Bueschel)
