Radio Netherlands program preview Oct 7-13

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands' English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER
*** Weekend Connection ***
Every Saturday, the Newsline team brings you Weekend Connection, with thought-provoking reports on the issues making headlines in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond.
It's a lively mix of local colour and "the big picture". One week you might hear how Dutch farmers are doing their part to combat bird flu, the next week it's about the worldwide attempt to punish crimes against humanity. Big or small, Weekend Connection covers it all!
Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 10.00 (Australia/Asia/Far East), 12.00 (Eastern N America), 14.00 & 15.30(South Asia), 18.00, 19.30 & 20.30 (Africa), 00.00 (Eastern N America), 01.00 (Central N America), 05.00 (Western N America & New Zealand)
*** Vox Humana ***
For more than a decade, Radio Netherlands has been following the progress of Jagriti public school. During that time, the small school in a New Delhi slum has been transformed into a grand, beautiful building in the remote, rice-growing countryside of West Bengal.
Shabnam and Jugnu Ramaswamy dreamt that they could create a level playing field for the children of the poorest farmers in the country. In a country where a good education is the privilege of those who can pay for it, Dheera Sujan went to see if one couple's endeavours can actually make a difference.
Broadcast times on SW (UTC): 10.27 (Australia/Asia/Far East), 11.27 (Eastern N America), 14.30 (South Asia), 18.27 & 20.00 (Africa), 00.27 (Eastern N America), 01.27 (Central N America), 04.27 (Western N America), 06.27 (New Zealand), 07.27 (Australia)
Repeated: Sun 1430 (South Asia), Sun 1900 (N America, Africa)
SUNDAY 8 OCTOBER
*** Amsterdam Forum ***
Is it still safe to eat meat?
Intensive factory farming methods are making meat products cheaper and more abundant than ever before. But critics of these methods say they're to blame for the spread of animal-to-human diseases such as avian flu and Mad Cow Disease (BSE). They claim feeding antibiotics to the animals we eat has led to the rise of 'superbugs'. And they also argue that factory farming is inhumane, damaging to the environment and disastrous for the livelihoods of small-scale farmers.
So is it time to rethink the meat industry? Or is it time to give the meat industry a break?

The characteristic bar-code appearance of a genetic fingerprint is all too familiar these days, featuring in TV crime series and in law courts all around the world. But it's not so long since the discovery of this powerful tool - a life-changing moment for the scientist involved. In the Research File we get an insight into that experience and look to the future of this technology, now that its inventor has been awarded a prestigious Dutch prize.
We also catch up with some of the other winners of this year's Heineken Awards, who have made major contributions to ecology, breast cancer genetics and - unusually for the Research File - political economics.

The European Union has never been more unpopular - Euroquest asks why.

The building has a fascinating history. Built in 1913 with money donated by the world's richest man, the palace is filled with priceless treasures from around the world.

*** Dutch Horizons ***
This year marks the 400th anniversary of Dutch-Australian relations so Dutch Horizons heads Down Under this week.
You'll hear about the Fairbridge Farm School near Perth. After the Second World War, a group of skinny, half-starved Dutch children and their parents came from Indonesia to West-Australia.
The children would eventually enrol in a school on the grounds of a farm not far from Perth. Today, these children are grandparents who still treasure the photos and the memories of their time at the Fairbridge Farm School.
Dheera Sujan visited them to capture their extraordinary story for Dutch Horizons.

In Mauretania in north west Africa, this very versatile animal is the key to survival and even contributes to the local economy through sales of its milk.
