Manx Radio Turning Up the Wick 1970-1972

Following on from the post about Manx Radio's overnight closedown 6 months ago I bought second hand on the history of Manx Radio, A Nations Station by Derek Winterbottom published in 2014 for it's 40th anniversary. 223 pages and a balanced account  They'd been awarded a licence in July 1965 to broadcast with 2kw with a directional aerial. Chapter 3, Turning Up the Wick (1970-76) had some information I wasn't aware of, edited summary:

The station was barely profitable. When the Conservatives won the 1970 election they hoped to get permission to turn up the power and persuade Chris Chataway to nominate Manx Radio as the regional station for NW England. He refused as it would hit revenue for English commercial companies. Tynwald did vote to buy a more powerful transmitter. When the transmitter arrived in October 71 they planned to test it at its full power 10kw but it developed a fault. Post Office got to hear of this and warned them that transmitting at more than 2kw would be a breach of their licence. On January 20th 1972 without any announcement they transmitted at 10kw so were heard loud and clear in many parts of the UK. The BBC complained to the Home Office, Home Office complained to the Isle of Man Governor and on January 28th he told them to return to 2kw forthwith.

Their new strategy was to argue that if the UK refused to allow spillage from Manx Radio transmissions then they would complain about any interference from new commercial stations in Manchester and Liverpool. They requested a meeting with Chris Chataway which took place in March 1972. Just before the meeting Post Office technicians completed a survey and advised that they could achieve perfect coverage of the Isle of Man using low power relay stations. Chataway used this as his main argument at the meeting insisting that Manx Radio broadcasts should be restricted to the Isle of Man. He suggested as an alternative that the Isle of Man could join a new consortium which was applying for the Liverpool commercial licence. They put an advert in the Liverpool Daily Post on August 24 1972 saying they wished to apply for that licence and asking interested parties to contact them, clipping here.

There was a good response and links were established with Sir Max Entwhistle, former leader of the City Council, David Moores of Littlewoods, former Postmaster General Reginald Bevins and performers such as Ringo Starr, Cilla Black and Arthur Askey, They set up The Liverpool Broadcasting Company. Their hopes were dashed when the IBA concession was given to rival company Radio City.

IBA Technical Review 5 on Independent Local Radio Planning September 1974 states "By March 1972 there was substantial development of MF planning. A new factor was that because the Isle of Man commercial radio service was not permitted to provide coverage in England the IBA transmissions had to be restricted in a reciprocal manner." The Mb21 Transmission Gallery for the Piccadilly Radio MW transmitter site at Ashton Moss includes an article by E.T Ford on Directional MF arrays for IBA station  with detailed information on directional aerial.

The Radio City MW transmitter site at Rainford near St. Helens was directional to the South West. Manx Radio 1368 was granted permission in 1980 to use a 10kw transmitter on 1368 a directional aerial with nulls of 7-9 db towards 110-140 degrees and 300-330 degrees, effective radiated power 20kw.

DR Kalundborg station update

Denmark

DR Kalundborg 243kHz. Information and Program Schedule

The carrier is switched on some minutes before the start of the interval signal (IS) and stays on for some time after the end of each broadcast.
For a fine reception, you should use the very sensitive Danish SDR (Software Defined Radio) located near Skanderborg in Eastern Jutland: www.85.191.35.22:8073
Also, there is generally very good reception using the University Enschede Twente SDR receiver, and north German SDRs.

About the programs:
The interval signal (IS) at the start of the broadcasts is a recording of the mechanically played IS and is an old Danish song, “I dreamt a dream tonight about silk and rich clothes…“. It was used for the first time on August 28, 1931.
The other interval signal heard is composed for the long wave broadcasts.
Weather forecasts: They were broadcast directly from the Danish Meteorological Office. The forecasts terminated at 11.45 CET on november 1st, 2023 and were replaced by a short info program and
interval signal.
The News relays are taken from DR’s P4.
The Church Service is broadcast live from the Cathedral of Copenhagen, but remotely controlled. Also broadcast on DR P2 and DR TV channel 2.
The Excercises, “ Body and Movement“, are a number of old recordings, each lasting 10 minutes.
Marine Intelligence, broadcast from the Defence Operations Center, including gunnery practices at the end. The information is repeated.
The very last broadcast is on December 31, at 17.40-approx. 18.30 CET. Information in Danish about the closure of 243 kHz: www.dr.dk/am (use Google translate).

New Zealand begins work on transmitter

Radio New Zealand website November 28:

Work has started to decommission RNZ Pacific's shortwave transmitter 1 at its site on New Zealand's North Island.
This 100-kilo-watt transmitter was installed at Rangitaiki, Taupo in 1989.
In 2022, RNZ received funding to construct a new transmitter for RNZ  Pacific to ensure the services future.
Until the new transmitter project is completed, RNZ Pacific will continue to broadcast through its transmitter 2 at the Rangitaiki site.
The installation of the new Ampegon transmitter will begin in late January 2024.
RNZ Pacific apologizes for any inconvenience this transition may cause to our on-air listeners around the world.
The broadcaster will aim to minimize service disruptions to our on-air audiences, and partner stations in the Pacific region.
RNZ Pacific can still be heard via satellite, and its content will still be available to download or livestream through its website rnzi.com

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 - 26 November 2023

Solar activity ranged from low to moderate levels. Low levels were observed on 21-22 and 25-26 November. Moderate (R1-minor) levels were observed on 20 and 23-24 November. During the period, a total of 55 C-class and 4 M-class flares were observed from 13 different regions. Region 3492 (N19, L=345, class/area Ehi/380 on 24 Nov) was the most active region producing 23 C-class and 1 M-class flare.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at low to moderate levels during the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet to unsettled levels on 20 and 23-24 November. Active, minor storm (G1-minor) and moderate (G2-moderate) levels were observed on 21-22 and 25-26 November. Quiet to minor storm levels were observed on 21-22
November due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Minor to moderate storm levels were observed on 25 November due to CME and positive polarity CH HSS influence.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 November - 23 December 2023

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels on 02-12 December, with a chance for moderate (R1-minor) levels on 27-30 November, 01 December and 13-23 December.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate to high levels on 30 November, 01-04 December and 07-09 December due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels on 27-28 November, 05-07 and 12-13 December. Unsettled to G1 (minor) levels are possible on 18-20 and 22-23 December. All activity is due to a variety of positive or negative polarity CH HSS influence.

Shortwave Radiogram, Program 331

Hello friends

Our EasyDRF special last week was largely successful. Many thanks to Daz Man in Australia for producing the broadcast, and for the instructions.

If you were not able to receive or decode the EasyDRF, you have another chance by using the audio from the YouTube video provided by Scott in Ontario. Scott's reception allowed the decode of the html and six of the ten images.

Another opportunity is an IQ wav audio file provided by H0b0_Radio in Washington state. You will have to access this IQ wav file using an SDR such as HDSDR. Then you can play the EastDRF broadcast in USB, LSB, or ECSS, or more than one of these modes sequentially. This tweet from H0b0_Radio gives a good visualization of what the decoded EasyDRF looks like.

The web post for program 330 has the instructions for decoding EasyDRF, and the contact information for Daz Man if you have questions.

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 330) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Friday 1300 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany (with a link to the EasyDRF web page).

We return to our usual MFSK for program 331.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 331, 24-27 November 2023, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:45  MFSK32: Program preview (now)
2:54  MFSK32: Device keeps defunct satellites from tumbling*
 8:00  MFSK64: First commercial-scale ocean thermal energy ***
13:14  MFSK64: This week's images*
28:26  MFSK32: Closing announcements

*** No image follows this story. Ignore the asterisk in the program preview as broadcast.

Please send reception reports to radiogram@verizon.net

And visit http://swradiogram.net

(visit during the weekend to see listeners’ results)
Other Shortwave broadcast programs that include digital text and images include The Mighty KBC, Pop Shop Radio and Radio North Europe International (RNEI). Links to these fine broadcasts, with schedules, are posted here.

Thanks for your reception reports!

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 - 19 November 2023

Solar activity ranged from low to moderate levels. Low levels were observed on 13, 15-17 and 19 November. Moderate (R1-minor) levels were observed on 14 and 18 November. Region 3485 (S19, L=205, class/area Dai/080 on 12 Nov) produced an M1.0/Sn at 14/2305 UTC. New Region 3490 (N23, L=355, class/area Eac/150 on 19 Nov) produced three M-class flares; an M1.2 at 19/0542 UTC, and M1.1 at 19/1644 UTC and an M1.0 at 19/2233 UTC.

Early on 16 November, dimming was observed near N10W15. An associated CME was observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery off the WNW limb at 16/0336 UTC. Model analysis of this CME suggested likely Earth impact early on 20 November.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity was at mostly quiet to unsettled levels with isolated active and minor storm (G1-minor) levels early on 13 November. The isolated active and minor storm levels was due to waning CME influence. The remainder of 13 November through 15
November was at quiet to unsettled levels due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Mostly quiet levels were observed on 16-19 November.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 November - 16 December 2023

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels with a chance for moderate levels from 20 November to 01 December and again from 14 to 16 December.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 25 November through 09 December due to CH HSS influence.

Shortwave Radiogram program update

Shortwave Radiogram, Program 330

Hello friends

The next Shortwave Radiogram will be another EasyDRF special produced by Daz Man in Australia. EasyDRF is a Windows application program for sending files over the radio using HamDRM format. EasyDRF is somewhat complex and less tolerant of difficult reception conditions than our MFSK and other digital modes. But when it works, the results are dazzling.

Our previous EasyDRF special was 11-16 May 2023.

Daz Man's instructions for the EasyDRF are below. Please take the time to read them. Note that Daz provides a link to an audio file so that you can practice decoding EasyDRF before the actual broadcasts begin.

But first ...

A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 329) is provided by Scott in Ontario (who tuned in Saturday at 2300 UTC because of the missing Friday 1300 UTC broadcast). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. The analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.

Please send reception reports to radiogram@verizon.net

Bauer to turn off AM in Ireland, northern England and Scotland

Radio Today

By Roy Martin
11 November 2023

Medium-wave services carrying Greatest Hits Radio in Scotland will be turned off by the end of the year, RadioToday can reveal.

In addition, Bauer will turn off AM transmitters carrying the national brand in Newcastle and South Yorkshire, along with Downtown Radio in Northern Ireland.

Other northern frequencies for Greatest Hits Radio in Lancashire, Manchester, Leeds and Humberside closed down in 2021.

Messages are currently being broadcast after each top-of-hour news bulletin suggesting listeners need to retune to keep listening.

The move continues Bauer’s digital transformation after turning off other AM frequencies carrying Absolute Radio, despite landing a £25k fine.

All services will remain available via digital platforms.

The Greatest Hits Radio AM frequencies being turned off in the next six weeks are:

990 Doncaster, South Yorkshire (was Hallam)
1035 Ayr, Prestwick, Irvine & Kilmarnock, Ayrshire (was West Sound AM)
1107 Inverness, Highland (was MFR)
1152 Newcastle, Sunderland & County Durham (was Metro / GNR)
1152 Glasgow (was Raio Clyde)
1161 Dundee & North Fife (was Tay)
1305 Barnsley, South Yorkshire (was Hallam)
1548 Edinburgh, Lothians & South Fife (was Forth)
1548 Sheffield, South Yorkshire (was Hallam)
1584 Perth, Perth & Kinross (was Tay)
(data from jack-bromby.com)

Global is also in the process of turning off its AM services, whilst the BBC has been doing it for many years, including BBC Radio Scotland in 2020, and has plans to turn off 5 Live on AM and BBC Radio 4 on LW in the near future.

Finnish radio stations continue to broadcast in the border areas of the Leningrad and Pskov regions

This means that Finland can launch an anti-Russian broadcast. According to media reports, the Yule company is already offering vacancies to journalists and is resuming the work of the Russian-language editorial office. This is what I gave you to listen to, an ordinary Finnish radio station that broadcasts here, near Vyborg, and this is not towards the Finnish border, but closer to St. Petersburg. Now, as some of my colleagues told me, who still continue to work practically underground in Finland, supplying information from there, Yule is resuming recruitment of a Russian-language editorial staff, where it can invite, among other things, foreign agents who fled from Russia to Finland. In my opinion, the restoration of broadcasting of our radio stations to Finland takes place not in a musical format, but in a conversational one, so that Russian-speaking residents who live in Finland can receive our information, and not that which is imposed from the outside.

How Azerbaijan will broadcast in minority languages after the return of Karabakh

New details have emerged about how Azerbaijan will organize radio broadcasting in minority languages in the reclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh. Let us recall that, as reported, at the beginning of October, on three FM frequencies - 101.1, 103.5, and 97.7 MHz, through a transmitting center in Shusha, some Azerbaijani radio broadcasting in Nagorno-Karabakh in Armenian and Russian languages started in order to convey to residents' Armenian origin of the calls of the Azerbaijani authorities.

However, what specific radio stations began broadcasting on the above-mentioned frequencies was unknown. We then assumed that we were talking about regular channels of Azerbaijani radio from Baku. However the catch was that the 1st main radio channel of Azerbaijan Radio does not broadcast programs in the Armenian language. In addition to the Azerbaijani language, Channel I of Azerbaijani Radio broadcasts only in Russian (and then only one short five-minute news broadcast per day).

In Armenian, radio broadcasts in modern Azerbaijan are carried out only on the station "Voice of Azerbaijan", also known as "International Radio", and in Soviet times as foreign broadcasting "Radio Baku".

Details in Russian -

****
Nagorno-Karabakh is a region located in the South Caucasus, covering the southeastern stretch of the Lesser Caucasus mountain range. Part of the greater region of Karabakh, it spans the area between Lower Karabakh and Syunik. Its terrain mostly consists of mountains and forestland

The fate of the 700 MHz frequencies will be decided before March 1

By March 1 next year, (2024) the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation will have to decide on a model for releasing frequencies for the development of 5G. The head of  the department told Rossiyskaya Gazeta about this

As Maksut Shadayev clarified, the corresponding instruction was given by the head of the Government Mikhail Mishustin. First of all, we are talking about the 700 MHz band. The fact is that after the transition to digital, broadcasters still have not agreed on the transmission of these frequencies. At the moment, according to the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, two main options are being considered:
- holding an auction with fair compensation to broadcasters for refusing frequencies;
- transfer of frequencies to state-owned companies, which will ensure their joint use by telecom operators;
Let us recall that earlier "Cableman" wrote

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 - 12 November 2023

Solar activity ranged from low to moderate levels. Low levels were observed on 06-10 Nov and again on 12 Nov. Moderate levels (R1/Minor) were observed on 11 Nov due to an isolated M1.2/Sf flare at 11/1729 UTC from Region 3477 (S15, L=227, class/area Cko/350 on 05 Nov). Other activity included an eruption centered near S15W15 around 09/1115 UTC. An associated CME was first observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery at 09/1148 UTC as an asymmetric halo. Modeling of the CME had an arrival around 11/2000 UTC. Another CME was associated with an eruption near Region 3484 (S15, L=215, class/area Cai/080 on 12 Nov) occurring at 10/1900 UTC. The associated CME was observed off the WSW limb beginning at 10/2000 UTC. Modeling of the CME suggested a possible grazing influence late on 15 Nov.

A minor enhancement in the greater than 10 MeV proton flux was observed beginning at 09/1630 UTC, likely associated with the aforementioned eruption a 09/1115 UTC. The flux reached a peak of 2.73 pfu at 10/0015 UTC before returning to background levels late
on 11 Nov.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels on 06 Nov and reached high levels on 07-12 Nov in response to CME and coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) influences. A peak flux of 4,370 pfu was observed at 11/1710 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G2 (Moderate) storm levels. The period began under the influence of a combination of CME activity from 03 Nov and a negative polarity CH HSS. Early on 06 Nov, the total field was in the 17-20 nT range but slowly dissipated. The total field decayed to 5 nT by early on 07 Nov where a fluctuation in the Bz component was observed, indicating a transition into the HSS. Solar wind speed continued to increase to 720-740 km/s by 08 Nov before slowly returning to values near 440 km/s by early on 12 Nov.

Some discrepancies were observed in DSCOVR solar wind data, likely due to low densities. At 12/0531 UTC, a small shock was observed in solar wind data marking the arrival of the 09 Nov halo CME. The total field increased initially from 2 nT to 5 nT with a solar wind speed increase from 465 km/s to 524 km/s. Total field continued to increase to 11 nT by late on 12 Nov along with a rotation to a southward Bz component occurring after 12/2205 UTC. Solar wind speed reached a maximum of 600 km/s at 12/0729 UTC before steadily descending to end-of-period values near 420 km/s. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled to G2 storm levels on 06 Nov and quiet to G1 (Minor) storming on 07 Nov. Quiet to active levels were observed on 08, 10, and 12 Nov. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed on 09 Nov and quiet conditions prevailed on 11 Nov.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 November - 09 December 2023

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels with a chance for moderate levels (R1-R2/Minor-Moderate) on 13-15 Nov and again on 19 Nov-09 Dec.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 13-17 Nov due to a combination of CME and CH HSS influence. High levels are expected again on 25 Nov-09 Dec due to recurrent CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to G1 (Minor) levels on 13 Nov due to persistent CME activity. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 14-16 Nov due to a combination of positive polarity CH HSS activity and potential grazing from the 10 Nov CME late on 15 Nov. Unsettled to active periods are also expected on 22-28 Nov and 04-07 Dec, with G1 storming likely on 22 Nov, 24-25 Nov, and 05 Dec, due to recurrent CH HSS activity.

QSLing AWR

AWR QSL Cards
A special offer is currently available for DXers and international radio monitors throughout the world to receive a genuine AWR QSL card through the postal system.  This limited-time offer is available until the end of the year and listeners may respond with a current reception report or with an earlier version.
Each reception report will be verified with a postcard style QSL card in any of more than 200 designs of leftover stock.  Email reception reports are discouraged.  The only location for this special QSL offer is the current AWR address in Indiana, USA.

* AWR QSL Stamps
On two separate occasions in earlier years, AWR offered QSL stamps together with the QSL card.  A QSL stamp will accompany each QSL card that is sent out in this special offer in response to each listener's reception report.

* Heritage QSL Collection
Over the past many years, the AWR office in Indiana has accepted deposits of listener QSL cards and letters from international radio listeners who are seeking a permanent home for their valued QSL collection.  It is estimated that between 200 and 300 people have responded by sending their valued QSL collection to the AWR address in Indiana.  Arrangements are underway for shipping the entire Indiana Heritage Collection to Australia, where they will be scanned electronically and then deposited in the government archives in the national capital Canberra.   The scanned version of every QSL will be made available on the internet, and the archived versions will be available for examination by any interested person.  There is no similar venture available anywhere else in the world.  Anyone who is wanting a permanent home for their QSL collection is welcome to send it to the AWR address in Indiana, with arrival date no later than early in the New Year.  These subsequent QSL collections will then be included in the shipment to Australia.

FRS weekend broadcast

Dear FRS Friend!

In our previous message, we informed about our 29th October broadcast (last Sunday).
That went out on 7700//9345 kHz. 9945 was not communicated in our message. We didn't
expect that 9300 and 9335 were not clear and a move was the only solution.

Conditions last Sunday were not what we hoped for.
A new opportunity is next Sunday November 5th (hoping for the better).
We will be on air on 6185 kHz and once again 31 metres. We do hope to start on 9300 kHz but
realize it could be any other frequency in the 9290- 9345 range!
The start is 09:52 CET sharp, and close down 14:35 CET.

We are looking forward to having your company next Sunday!

73s, Peter V. on behalf of the FRS staff

Some Things to see on The Encore Website:

The Encore website is www.tumbril.co.uk where you will find:

Important information about funding of Encore - Radio Tumbril.

Up-to-date transmission times and frequencies.

The playlists for the most recent programs.

An email link.

Informal reception reports as well as those requesting eQSL cards are welcome.

ENCORE IS A ONE-MAN OPERATION -  PLEASE MAKE A PAYPAL DONATION OR 'BUY ME A COFFEE' AND HELP KEEP ENCORE ON THE AIR - Go to - www.tumbril.co.uk

WRMI and Channel 292 are very generous with their air-time but Encore still costs around 200 Dollars/Euros a month to broadcast.

If you can - please send a small contribution to help Encore keep going.

THE DONATION BUTTON AND 'BUY ME A COFFEE' BUTTON are on the homepage of the website - www.tumbril.co.uk - which folks can use if they would like to support Encore.

(Please don't be put off by the POWR security wall when using the PAYPAL button - it is a harmless requirement of WIX the website hosting service.)

THIS FORTNIGHT"S PROGRAMME - (First broadcast this FRIDAY (3rd Nov) by WRMI at 0200 UTC on 5850, (and 2000 UTC on 15770) and then Channel 292 on SATURDAY (Nov 4th) at 11:00 UTC on 9670 kHz):

Has a bit of a new-age feel to it. There is some electronica from Ani Williams - her invocation to Hathor, and Jessita Reyes playing native American flute in her composition Early Morning.

We have some slightly more conventional but very beautiful solo classical guitar from Jim Perkins and a duet for flute and cello by another contemporary composer, Yoel Reza Afhami.

There is also a string quartet by Haydn, a long piece by Dvorák, and two Scriabin piano preludes to balance things out.

A very good site for online SDR receivers all over the world is: http://kiwisdr.com/public/  Click the 'Map' button in the top left of the screen.

Thank you for spreading the word about Encore - Classical Music on Shortwave on Radio Tumbril - and thank you for your support.
