Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 - 26 April 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Region 2760 (S07, L=305, class/area=Bxo/10 on 26 Apr) developed late in the week but remained quiet. No flare activity or earth-directed CMEs were
observed this period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal and normal to moderate levels this period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels on 20 Apr, with isolated active conditions observed on 21 Apr, due to the influence of a recurrent, negative polarity CH HSS. Generally quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions were registered throughout the remainder of the week.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 April - 23 May 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to persist at normal and normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 05 May in response to recurrent CH HSS influences. Generally quiet and quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the period.

SW Radiogram schedules, Friday-Sunday

Hello friends,

I hope this finds you well and avoiding the COVID-19 and any other viruses that might be lurking. With most of us spending most of our time at home, radio and the various radio-associated hobbies and pastimes are a good companion.

There were lots of interesting reports last weekend, via Twitter and email. Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 148) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Saturday 1330 UTC), 2010DFS in Japan, Sunday 0800 UTC on both 5850 and 7730 (very surprising reception for this far into spring!), Ralf in Germany and Jeff in Oklahoma (both Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eleven MFSK images.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 149,  23-26 April 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Thanks for your reception reports!

Monitoring North Korea during Kim Jong Un's Health Crisis

Kim Jong Un, the North Korean dictator, is recovering Tuesday from a cardiovascular procedure, according to a South Korean media reports.

The Daily NK, an online news periodical based in Seoul, which is run mostly by North Korean defectors, reported that Kim, 36, was recovering from his April 12 surgery at a resort county villa on the east coast. The report said Kim has been in bad health because of heavy smoking, obesity and overwork.

Sources told Fox News that the White House is aware of the reports of Kim's health, but there is no confirmation.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 - 19 April 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the reporting period. No sunspots were obseved on the visible disk and no Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the reporting period.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled. Unsettled levels were observed on 14-15 Apr in response to several periods of prolonged southward Bz. The remainder of the reporting period observed quiet conditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 April - 16 May 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at mostly normal to moderate levels. 29-30 April will likely observed high levels in response to coronal hole influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to active levels. Active levels are likely on 20 Apr, 27 Apr and 05 May; unsettled levels are likely on 21-23 Apr and 30 Apr. All enhancements in geomagnetic active are in response to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to observed quiet conditions.

World Music Radio back on shortwave

DENMARK

After having been silent on SW since September 2019, World Music Radio (WMR) is now back on 15805 kHz using a 3 element YAGI beamed south - every Saturday and Sunday at 07-20 UTC.

The transmitter power is 200 Watts and the signal is audible almost worldwide for dedicated DXers. Unless one is in Eastern Jutland, Denmark and can get the ground wave, having a good receiver, a good aerial and being at a site without man made interference - as well as having patience
- and listening at the right time of the day (when propagation is best) is needed in order to catch WMR on 15805 kHz.

Best reception usually is in Southern Europe, but it is also possible to receive 15805 kHz in the Eastern Europe, Middle East, all over Africa, in parts of South America and the Eastern part of North America. Also in Asia "on a good day".

Sometimes 15805 kHz suffer from some interference from a Chinese station on 15800 kHz.

Sometimes short skip propagation is providing excellent reception in Central Europe. But propagation is changing all the time and catching the low power signals from WMR on 15805 kHz is really a challenge for DXers in most places. It is not just switching on your receiver and tuning in -
as is often the case with big international broadcasters using 100,000 - 500,000 Watts of power.

Please note that the signals of WMR on 15805 kHz are only suitable for AM listening, so don't use SSB.

Reception reports are acknowledged by an eQSL for reports sent to  wmr@wmr.dk  or by a QSL card (as well as stickers and as long as stocks last:a pennant) for reports sent to

World Music Radio
P.O.Box 112
DK-8960 Randers S+, Denmark, Europe

(kindly enclose return postage: 2 IRCs, 5 Euro or equivalent. Sorry but one or two US dollars won't do) Please note that reception reports using remote receivers (such as remote Kiwi SDRs) are not QSLed.

There are two reasons for WMR being off air on SW for several months.

First the Danish Telecom agency refused to issue a new license to utilise "out of band frequencies on a non-interference basis". This issue was however settled. Second problem was a storm which damaged the Yagi aerial.

The aerial was repaired a few days ago and it now works very well again - from the transmitter site just north of Randers in Eastern Jutland, Denmark.

The second SW frequency of WMR, 5840 kHz, is expected to be back on the air from a new transmitter site by the end of April 2020.

All-Podcast Station Launched in London

Podcast Radio broadcasts on DAB; “podjocks” link content from around the world

BY WILL JACKSON
Published April 14, 2020

LONDON — The United Kingdom’s first radio station devoted exclusively to podcasts has launched in London. Podcast Radio broadcasts on DAB+ digital radio, showcasing podcast content from around the world.

The station’s CEO Gerry Edwards explains how the idea was born from his own radio and podcast experience. “Podcasting has intrigued me for years, and I found myself discussing it over and over in everyday conversation. After helping friends and colleagues produce their own individual series and seeing my own co-hosted seven-episode podcast reach the U.K. comedy top 10 on Apple, I felt podcasts needed to be heard over the airwaves.”

Russia Returns to DRM on Shortwave

Radio Purga targets Chukotka, the country’s northeasternmost region

BY HANS JOHNSON
PUBLISHED: APRIL 8, 2020

Russia has resumed Digital Radio Mondiale broadcasts on shortwave. The country originally aired the Voice of Russia via DRM a few years ago. The new service is tentatively called Radio Purga (“Radio Blizzard”). The target area is the Chukotka region of the Russian Far East. Analog shortwave transmissions once served the area, but those ended in the early 2000s when the broadcaster left analog shortwave.

Chukotka is vast and the target audience only numbers a few thousand. Thus, shortwave is the only practical way to reach the population. The transmitter site, Komsomolsk Amur, used to broadcast Voice of Russia’s analog programming and is now being used for the DRM program.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 March - 05 April 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Region 2759 (N28, L=263, class/area Hrx/030 on the 02 Apr) formed on the disk on 31 Mar and produced a few B-class events early on 04 Apr. The region decayed to plage on 05 Apr. No Earth-directed CMEs were detected.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 01-04 Apr and the moderate levels on 30-31 Mar and 04-05 Apr. A maximum flux of 1,690 pfu was observed on 02 Apr at 1750 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity was at unsettled to active levels on 30-31 Mar due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. The remainder of the period experienced quiet to unsettled levels with an isolated and active period observed late on 03 Apr.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 April - 02 May 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on the 19-22 Apr and 29-30 Apr. Normal to moderate levels are expected to prevail throughout the  remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to active levels on 10-11 Apr, 15-19 Apr and 26-27 Apr. This is due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Generally quiet or quiet to unsettled conditions are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Shortwave Radiogram schedules. April 3-5

Hello friends,

Last weekend's experiment with Olivia 16-1000 produced results that were definitely indefinitive. In the few cases where I could find a signal bad enough to give the mode a real test, the Olivia 16-1000 did not seem any better than the MFSK32, and not much better than the MFSK64. It reminds us why we like the MFSK modes on Shortwave Radiogram. However, there was one example of improbable reception in South Australia of the Sunday 2330-2400 UTC broadcast on 7780 kHz. Despite a nearly inaudible signal, the Olivia 16-1000 decoded well.

Shortwave Radiogram listeners have produced videos of last weekend's reception (program 145), which include examples of Olivia 16-1000 versus the MFSK modes: youngalientype in Ohio (I think) (Friday 1300 UTC Olivia 16-1000 excerpt, Ralf in Germany, Lolo sdr in Spain, and Scott in Ontario (all Saturday 1330 UTC), and, amazingly for this far into spring, reception in Europe, Sunday at 0800 UTC on 7730 kHz, captured by i0kte stafano in Italy (excerpt) and Lolo sdr in Spain. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

With most of us required to stay at home, this weekend we will try more experiments with modes designed for especially bad reception. So let's hope for at least some bad reception. We will try two approaches: 1) Olivia 64-2000, which spreads the data 2000 Hz wide, using most of the bandwidth we have in a shortwave broadcast channel. 2) MFSK16, which concentrates all the data in a narrow column of data 316 Hz wide. This will be in addition to our usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with six MFSK64 images this weekend.

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) .

Thanks for your reception reports and stay well!
