RADIO FREE ASIA ANNOUNCES QSL CARD #83
SEPTEMBER 2023
Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces its latest QSL card commemorating 27 years of bringing news to a weekly audience of nearly 60 million people in Asia living under oppressive regimes or in media environments vulnerable to authoritarian propaganda. Through journalism grounded in accuracy, accountability and trust, RFA brings to light consequential developments in China, North Korea, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as the Pacific Island region and Oceania. This is RFA’s 83rd QSL design and will be used to confirm all valid RFA reception reports from September – December 2023.
Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Tibetan (including Uke, Amdo, and Kham dialects), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in our editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of our target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of our broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest. More information about RFA, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is always available at www.rfa.org.
RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports. Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions. Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 21 - 27 August 2023
Solar activity ranged from low to moderate. Region 3415 (S09, L=79, class/area=Dko/350 on 24 Aug) produced the strongest flare of the period, a long-duration M1.4/1n at 25/0109 UTC. Lower M-class X-ray flares (R1 - Minor) were observed from Region 3405 (N10, L=183, class/area=Eso/180 on 16 Aug) and an area around the E limb. The remaining active regions were relatively simple.
Other activity included a Type II radio sweep on 26 Aug which was associated with activity just past the Sun's visible disk. None of the CMEs observed in available coronagraph imagery appeared to on the Sun-Earth line.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was low to moderate levels over the reporting period.
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active conditions. A single period of active conditions were observed 27 Aug due to a period of sustained Bz south that reached -7 nT. Only quiet to unsettled conditions were observed for the remainder of the reporting period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 28 August - 23 September 2023
Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a slight chance for M-class (R1-R2 Minor-Moderate) activity throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 07-10 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS influence. The remaining days are likely to be at background to moderate levels.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active levels. Active conditions are likely on 14 Sep, with unsettled conditions likely on 28-19 Aug, 06-08 Sep, 15-17 Sep and 23 Sep. All elevations in geomagnetic activity are anticipated due to recurrent CH HSS features. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 - 20 August 2023
Solar activity was at low levels with only C-class flares. The largest of these C-class flares was a C8.9 that occurred on 15 Aug at 2110 UTC from Region 3405 (N10, L=181, Dso/Beta as on 16 Aug). Other notable activity included a type II radio sweep on 20 Aug at 0626 UTC with an estimated speed of 488 Km/s. This event was associated with a C3.7/SF flare at 20/0626 UTC from Region 3409 (N22, L=252, Bxo/Beta on 21 Aug).
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit, as measured by the GOES-16 satellite, reached high levels on 14 Aug with a peak flux of 1,250 pfu observed at 1330 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed 15-20 Aug.
Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels 14-15 and 17-18 Aug. Unsettled levels were reached on 16 Aug likely in response to weak transient influence coupled with a CIR. Unsettled levels were reached again 19-20 Aug due to negative polarity CH HSS effects.

Solar activity is expected to be low with a slight chance for M-class flare activity through the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels 21 Aug - 06 Sep and 11-16 Sep. High levels are expected 07-10 Sep in response to recurrent CH HSS influence.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet 26 Aug - 05 Sep and 09-13 Sep. Unsettled levels are expected 21-25 Aug, 06-08 Sep and 15-16 Sep due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Active conditions are expected 14 Sep due to a recurrent CIR ahead of CH HSS onset.

Shortwave Radiogram, Program 318
Hello friends
We've had two frustrating weeks with out Friday 1300-1330 UTC broadcast, 15770 kHz from WRMI Florida -- which is usually the transmission that reaches the farthest in world. Last week, Shortwave Radiogram was missing, with the Overcomer Ministry in its place, due to an error in the WRMI automated playout system. The previous week, Shortwave Radiogram from the week before was heard because of an uploading error on my part. This week, let's hope for a return to normalcy.
Shortwave Radiogram listeners have noticed the absence of WINB DRM transmissions, Friday 1400-1430 UTC on 15735 kHz from WINB Pennsylvania. In my weekly email to WINB (to let them know that SWRG has been uploaded), I asked about this. "DRM is not on the air anymore," was the reply. No further details.
The WINB DRM transmission did not have much of an audience because the signal usually did not reach the threshold for a successful DRM decode. Few listeners have the devices needed to decode DRM (although the KiwiSDRs have a DRM mode, which works if the signal is very good). The 8.28 kbps bitrate resulted in grainy MFSK images, but it was fine for MFSK text if the signal was good enough.
That low bitrate may have been due to the fact that WINB was only using half of the 10 kHz bandwidth of a typical DRM broadcast signal for its voice content, and for our MFSK tones. The other half -- sometimes the lower half, sometimes the upper half -- was for some unspecified data. I suspect no content was actually being transmitted on the data half
Canadian Content Radio to return in August
Back by popular demand, starting Thursday, August 24th 2023 at 8:00 PM Eastern Time (North America) and every third Thursday of the month thereafter, Canadian Content Radio returns to the shortwave airwaves via WRMI, Radio Miami International on 9395 kHz in the 31-meter band.
The one-hour, monthly program was first aired as part of the Radio Angela experiment on WBCQ in 2022 and gained a worldwide following as one of RA's more popular programs. During its hiatus, Canadian Content Radio host and producer Sean Welsh has been retooling to the program to offer a more eclectic mix of Canadian music, songs with a Canadian connection, commentary, insights, and an expansion of the "WILT" feature (What I'm Listening To) featuring different styles of music from around the world.

Uncle Bill's Melting Pot Returns To The Airwaves
Dear radio friends, we are coming back after a brief hiatus on August 20 as a monthly on the third Sunday of each month on WBCQ The Planet 7490 kHz on the shortwave bands from 6pm-7pm ET (currently 2200-2300 UTC).
This is a time share with our other program, From The Isle of Music (on the first Sunday of each month) and Julio Cesar Pereira's Ginga Brasil! (on the second and fourth Sunday). When there is a fifth Sunday it will be Doug's Comedy Favorites.
We will have two special guests on the 20th. Storms will be with us from India in the first half hour to present his new South Indian devotional music-jazz-fusion album by The Indica Project, Aum. Irina Sarbu will be with us from Romania in the second half hour to present her new jazz album At the End of July.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 - 13 August 2023
Solar activity reached high levels on 07 Aug with three M-class flares (R1/Minor) observed in addition to an X1.5 flare (R3/Strong) at 07/2046 UTC from Region 3386 (N11, L=096, class/area=Dki/250 on 06 Aug); the largest event of the period. Moderate activity levels were observed on 08 Aug with an M3.6/Sf flare observed from Region 3387 (N20, L=069, class/area=Dsi/140 on 06 Aug). Low levels of activity were observed throughout the remainder of the week, with the bulk of C-class activity originating from Regions 3394 (S22, L=342, class/area=Dho/270 on 09 Aug) and 3395 (N13, L=331, class/area=Dai/180 on 12 Aug) over 09-13 Aug.
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux exceeded 10 pfu (S1/Minor) following west limb flare activity on 07 Aug. The S1 event began at 08/0115 UTC, reached a peak of 47 pfu at 09/0025 UTC, and ended at 10/0950 UTC. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux slowly decayed
following the end of S1 levels and returned to background levels on 13 Aug.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 09-13 Aug, with normal to moderate levels observed on 07-08 Aug.
Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels late 07 Aug and early 08 Aug due to an enhanced solar wind environment associated with the arrival of a CME from 04 Aug. Quiet and unsettled levels were observed on 09 Aug due to residual CME effects, and again on 10 and 12 Aug due to negative polarity CH HSS influences. Quiet levels were observed on 11 and 13 Aug under nominal solar wind conditions.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 14 August - 09 September 2023
Solar activity is likely to reach moderate to high levels over 17 Aug-03 Sep due to the expected return of multiple regions which produced event-level flares on their previous rotations. Low levels of solar activity are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 17-22, 27-28 Aug, and 07-09 Sep. Normal to moderate levels are expected throughout the remainder of the period.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be reach active levels on 16-18, and 26 Aug due to recurrent CH HSS influences. Quiet and quiet to unsettled levels are expected to prevail throughout the remainder of the period.

A group of high-frequency trading firms is asking the Federal Communications Commission to open shortwave frequencies to greater commercial use, so they can use radio to zip financial data around the
world in milliseconds.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 31 July - 06 August 2023
Solar activity ranged from moderate to high levels. 20 events above the M-class threshold (R1-Minor) were observed during the summary period. High solar activity levels were observed on 01 Aug due to eight M-class (R1-Minor) events from Region 3380 (S10, L=125, class/area=Dkc/430 on 02 Aug) and again on 02 Aug due to four M-class (R1) flares from the same region and a fifth M-class flare from Region 3386 (N12, L=092, class/area=Dki/360 on 28 Jul). Region 3386 also caused high levels over 05 Aug, with an X1.6/2b flare (R3-Strong) at 05/2221 UTC, the strongest during the week, and an over 06 Aug with an M5.5/Sn flare (R2-Moderate) at 06/1840 UTC. Type II and Type IV radio sweeps were observed with CME activity on 02 Aug from flare activity from Region 3386. Additional Type II radio sweeps were produced by the same region twice on 05 Aug. Solar activity for the remainder of the summary period was at moderate levels.
Activity associated with Region 3386 produced significant eruptions that resulted in CMEs thought to contain Earth-directed components occurred over 01-02 Aug and 05-06 Aug. An M1.3/1f flare at 02/0812 UTC was associated with a CME first seen in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery beginning 02/0936 UTC; an M1.6/1n flare at 05/0718 UTC, which also resulted in the elevation of high energy proton flux levels (>10 MeV) with CME first seen in C2 imagery at 05/0700 UTC, and an X1.6/2b flare at 05/2221 UTC, which produced additional enhancements to high energy proton flux levels and associated CME first seen in C2 at 05/2236 UTC.
An S1 (Minor) proton event was observed over 05-06 Aug a long-duration M1.6/1n flare from Region 3386. The GOES-16 greater than 10 MeV proton flux exceeded S1 threshold at 05/115 UTC. The event reached peaked of 18.5 pfu at 05/1745 UTC. Flux levels dropped below the S1 threshold near the end of the 05 Aug UT day; however, an additional rise above the S1 threshold was observed following the X1.6/2b flare at 05/2221 UTC from Region 3386. The S1 then event continued until 06/0455 UTC.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels through the summary period.
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storm conditions. Quiet conditions on 31 Jul increased to unsettled levels on 01 Aug and further to active levels on 02 Aug in response to transient influence from a CME that left the Sun on 28 Jul. Total magnetic field strength increased to a peak of 12 nT and the Bz component reached as far south as -9 nT. Solar wind speeds were ~400 km/s during the transient. Geomagnetic activity decreased to unsettled levels over 03 Aug before another increase to active levels was observed 04 Aug in response to the onset of more transient influence from activity on the Sun over 01-02 Aug. A peak in geomagnetic activity of G3 conditions was observed on 07 Aug following an interplanetary shock, observed at L1 at 05/0207 UTC. Total magnetic field strength increased from 10 nT to 25 nT and Bz reached as far south as -21 nT. Geomagnetic activity decreased rapidly after 05/1200 UTC as the Bz component of the IMF rotated far north resulting in mostly quiet conditions through the remainder of the reporting period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 07 August - 02 September 2023
Solar activity is likely to reach moderate levels on 07 Aug, primarily due to the remaining flare potential of Region 3386 as it continues to rotate just beyond the W limb. Mostly low solar activity is expected for the rest of the outlook period, with a chance for M-class (R1-R2/Minor-Moderate) activity after 17 Aug as multiple active regions that have produced significant flare activity are expected to return to the visible disk from the Sun's farside.
There is a chance for proton events (S1-Minor) at geosynchronous orbit over the next three days due to potential activity from Region 3386 just beyond the Sun's W limb.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at mostly moderate levels with the exception of high levels on 27-28 Aug due to anticipated positive polarity CH HSS activity.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 07 Aug due to CME influence from activity on the Sun over 04 Aug. An increase to G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels is likely on 08 Aug from eruptive activity on the Sun over 05 Aug. A decrease to active levels is expected on 09 Aug with waning transient influence transitioning to influence from a weak, positive polarity CH HSS. Active conditions are again likely on 26 Aug due to a recurrent CH HSS. The remainder of the outlook period is likely to be at mostly quiet levels.

From the Isle of Music - returns !
From The Isle of Music, the best Cuban music program produced outside of Cuba, returns as a monthly Sunday, August 6 on WBCQ The Planet, 7490 kHz from 6pm-7pm EDT (2200-2300 UTC). It will air the first Sunday of each month, sharing the day/time with Julio Cesar Pereira's Ginga Brasil!, which will air the second and fourth weeks, and Uncle BIll's Melting Pot, which will air the third week. When there is a fifth Sunday in a month, that will feature Doug Feldmann's Comedy Favorites.
This return episode of From The Isle of Music will feature selections from new recordings recognized in Cubadisco 2023.

Update on Music Programs on Shortwave

Announcement on This is a Music Show

The beloved ThisIsAMusicShow has ceased broadcasting for the foreseeable future, but you can rest assured, as the broadcast slot that was previously used by TIAMS (Thursdays between 0200-0300 UTC on WRMI 5850 kHz) is now in good hands.
In the first 30 minutes, starting at 0200 UTC, you will hear a monthly episode of Radio Carpathia, presented by myself, featuring the best music from Eastern Europe and sometimes beyond, as well as some digital text and sometimes an image in MFSK64. New shows air on the Thursday that follows the third Sunday of every month (it's not always the same), and will be repeated throughout the month.
In the other half of the hour, you will get to hear a special program from Radio Northern Europe International (whose normal program airs at 0100 UTC on the same day and frequency), called RNEIxtra, which introduces listeners to new genres, presenters, and music outside of the normal RNEI remit. Previous RNEIxtra shows have been DJ mixes, video game jazz, data experiments, and Rose's favorite: Japanese music specials! We love getting new presenters on air on RNEIxtra so look out for exciting new shows and contact us if you want to give shortwave a try! New shows come out on the Thursday that follows the second Sunday of every month.

Shortwave Radiogram, Program 316
Hello friends
Listeners have noticed that our transmission Tuesday at 1430-1500 UTC on 9955 kHz from WRMI Florida -- usually difficult to receive during the summer -- has been replaced by other content. Today I received confirmation from WRMI that the French service of RAE Argentina al Mundo has taken over the time slot Monday through Friday. However, WRMI says that Shortwave Radiogram will get 9955 kHz Sundays at 1430-1500 UTC, eventually.
Also today, Your Host (YH) informed us that This Is A Music Show (TIAMS) will discontinue its run on WRMI. TIAMS was a pioneer in the use of MFSK text and images on an analog shortwave carrier. Listeners are expressing sadness that the show will end.
A video of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 315) is provided by Scott in Ontario. The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. An archive of received images is maintained by John in California. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.

Radio Igloo (Sweden) Salutes Swedish Pirate Radio Syd
First, at 0000 UTC on 5950 kHz is Radio Igloo’s tribute to Swedish FM pirate station Radio Syd. Radio Igloo’s programs have long been a favorite of NAm listeners, and this one won’t disappoint, primarily since NAm listeners have never heard R. Syd. Igloo’s offering a nice QSL for correct reception reports to radioigloo@gmail.com.
2023 Wildflower Arts & Music Festival - Week 1 (Greetings to Finnish DX Assn. Summer Meeting)
Second, at 0100 on 5950 kHz and 1200 UTC on 15770 kHz, is our program greeting the Finnish DX Association’s summer meeting in Savo, Finland, on August 4th, 5th, and 6th. The show includes a message from the meeting. The QSL for the program displays the SDXL logo and the dates. The verification’s available for a correct detailed reception report to our usual email, texasradiosw@gmail.com.
