Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 - 26 August 2012

Solar activity was very low until 25 and 26 August. The largest flare of the reporting period was a C1/Sf at 25/0236 UTC from Region 1554 (N16, L=215, class/area Dsi/170 on 25 August). No coronal mass ejections observed during the reporting period were Earth-directed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels from 21 - 24 August. Moderate levels were observed 20 August and again from 25 - 26 August.

Geomagnetic field activity was mostly quiet to unsettled with an isolated active period mid-day on 26 August. At the beginning of the period, solar wind speed, measured at the ACE spacecraft, indicated the presence of a coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Solar wind decreased steadily from approximately 600 km/s to 400 km/s by early on 22 August. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 20 - 21 August. By mid-day on 24 August, the phi angle changed from a positive to negative orientation indicating a solar sector boundary crossing. Solar wind speed began to increase early on 25 August from approximately 400 km/s to 610 km/s as another CH HSS moved into geoeffective position. Solar wind speed increased once
more mid-day on 26 August and ended the period around 700 km/s. Conditions were quiet on 22 August. Conditions remained at quiet to unsettled levels from 23 August until mid-day on 26 August as an isolated active period was observed.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 August - 22 September 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels with a slight chance for M-class activity through the forecast period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels on 29 - 30 August, 09 - 10 September, 16 - 17 September, and again on 22 September due to effects from coronal hole high speed streams.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be mostly quiet to unsettled until 15 September as a recurrent coronal hole high speed stream moves into a geoeffective position. Unsettled to active conditions are expected on 15 - 16 September. Conditions are expected to be mostly quiet to unsettled again from 17 September through 21 September. Another recurrent coronal hole high speed stream is expected to become geoeffective on 22 September causing unsettled to active conditions.

QSLing from the Most Wanted List

In amateur and shortwave radio circles, there are stations considered a snap to hear and verify. And there are those at the top of the heap for Most Wanted. Swains Island, north of Tutuila Island, America Samoa, is one of the most wanted islands to verify, and one whose opportunity occurs rarely.
Despite its small size and remote location, a multinational team will again activate Swains Island and operate on six fully functional stations for 14 days on 1.8-50 MHz, using SSB, CW and RTTY. They expect to arrive on the island and setup on September 4, and plan to begin operations as NH8S the following day.
Amateur radio operators and shortwave listeners can learn more about this historic event on the team website at www.nh8s.org Links include a log search, photos, bios, sponsorship, QSL information and much more.
The suggested frequencies are where the NH8S team will be transmitting, and most of the time they will likely not be listening on their transmitting frequency. Remember to listen for their complete instructions before calling them.
One of the features of the Club Log is the Geo Propagation tab, which gives you an idea of what time and what band listeners from your area are getting through to the DXpedition station. Logs for NH8S will be accessible via their website.
Plans are to cease operating on September 18, and return to Pago Pago on September 20. Questions should be sent to info@nh8s.org .
Don’t miss this chance to verify Swains Island from the Most Wanted List.

Papua New Guinea
3260, NBC Madang, 1159-1204.* For over a week had been hearing this with a good signal before 1200. When I checked again later they were always off the air. So they are actually now suddenly going off the air much earlier than their normal sign off time. Bird call and start of the NBC National news on weekdays, but Christian religious song. Station identification and frequencies in Tok Pisin on Sunday. Phone dedications, transmitter off in mid-news \\ NBC Sandaun on 3204.96 which continued on after 1204.

Clearly here is another Papua New Guinea station that must be on a timer that automatically ends their transmitting day; just the way NBC East New Britain (3385 kHz) formerly did when they were on the air. (Ron Howard-CA/DX Window 461)

3915, Radio Fly via Kiunga, 1357-1405. Eclectic selections of music to Stevie Wonder “A Place In The Sun.” Kenny G “Winter Wonderland” to Scottish bagpipe music (rare to hear this on shortwave). Philippines
17700, Radyo ng Bayan simulcast via Radio Pilipinas, 0235-0330.* Tuned in expecting the usual weekday programming in English, but instead found Tagalog, so I knew something different was going on. Numerous IDs for “Radyo ng Bayan, 738 kilohertz on the AM dial, Nationwide.” Signal of fair strength, but poor audio, and fairly garbled, but not enough to make it unintelligible. Observed 0328 the only ID heard for Radio Pilipinas, the Voice of the Philippines to national anthem and station off. Suspect was a special program regarding the death of Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, as his body had just been found at sea after looking for it for several days, after a plane crash. He had been a part of President Aquino's cabinet (Ron Howard,Asilomar State Beach, CA)

Tanzania/Zanzibar
6015 Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporporation, Zanzibar, 0358. Music clip, baby crying. Advertisements to male speaker with "ZBC Radio." Drums and wind instrument, time pips, news in Swahili. "ZBC Radio" again at 0405, followed by world news from Bamako, Abidjan, Tehran, Jeddah, headlines and another "ZBC Radio" followed by local song. Good signal. (Graham Bell-AFS/DX Window 461)

Argentina
6060 2222-2252. Radiodifusión Argentina al Exterior, Buenos Aires. Spanish via lady announcer with public talk and mentions of Buenos Aires and applause. Male's talk amid poor signal with interference from Sichuan PBS. Heterodyne and local noise, best in LSB, // http://radionacional.com.ar/vivo/1-am-870.html with some delay (Mikhail Timofeyev, Russia/HCDX)

Australia
5940, Radio Australia, 1345. English, “Feature Album of the Week” profiling the band Sasquatch. Good. (Harold Sellers, Canada)

Bangladesh
15105.0, Bangladesh Betar English service here with a very weak signal, 12:35 - 13:00*. Was able to ID them only by going to the webSDR at University of Twente in the Netherlands which had a very good signal. During musical selection, it was very clearly the same station I was hearing. Program consisted of male announcer with commentary (items on World Humanitarian Day and cockfighting). Occasional music. At 12:58, announcer promised music, but received two minutes of loud hum instead. At sign-off male announcer with postal and web addresses for Bangladesh Betar. (Arthur Delibert, Maryland/HCDX)

15520, Bangladesh Betar, 1344* and *1358. Test tone from 1344 to 1358. External Service interval signal to time pips. Reception poor, with interference. (Ron Howard, CA)

Bolivia
4699.34, Radio San Miguel Riberalta 0903-0915. Spanish announcements at tune-in and presumed sign-on. Male announcer with talk to Bolivian music. Signal poor though improved. (Scott Barbour, NH)

4809.5, Radio Logos, 0936. Spanish. Lively Latin American music - station audible by tune down from nominal 4810 to avoid co-channel utility, which dominates the frequency at my location. (Scott Barbour, NH)

China
7245, 7265 CNR2. 1443, Chinese. Pop music, announcements over music, sound effects. 7245 was a bit better than 7265. Fair. (Harold Sellers, Canada)

Clandestine
5985, Shiokaze Sea Breeze via Japan, 1340. English (Fridays only, 1330-1430). Man with ID “this is Shiokaze Sea Breeze, from Tokyo, Japan.” Story on a “Mr. A”, a North Korea escapee to China who has appealed for permission to go to South Korea. Good. (Harold Sellers, Canada)

17745, Sudan Radio Service via Woofferton, 1501. Vernacular language with the news about “S-P-L-A” (Sudan People's Liberation Army), “General Philip Aguer”, etc. Sound bits in English. Strong signal with good reception. MP3 audio at

Papua New Guinea
3260, NBC Madang, 1202-1204.* For over a week had been hearing this with a good
signal before 1200, but when I checked again later they were always off the air. So they are actually now suddenly going off the air much earlier than their normal sign off time. Bird call and start of the NBC National news. Transmitter off in mid-news. Noted on // NBC Sandaun 3204.96 which continued on after 1204.(Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)

Peru
4810.050, Radio Logos, 0227-0320.* Mix of popular songs without any annoucement until just before sign-off. At 0257, seven minutes of what seemed to be hymns, and then back to pop. ("Logos" in Christian theology is the creative word of God.) At 02:16, male announcer with clear mention of "Radio Logos" and "kilohertz." Then another song, and into anthem. Signal was good enough that utility station on USB was not a problem, but CODAR was enough to induce madness. (Albert Delibert, MD/HCDX)

Radio Logos, 4810kHz. Heard also here in the middle of Europe at 0245UTC until sign-off at 0300. Popular melodies, national anthem and a short piece of marimba music before the transmitter was switched off. Weak signal. (Karel Honzik/HCDX)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 - 19 August 2012

Solar activity has been at very low to high levels. Two active sunspot regions dominated the summary period. Region 1543 (N21, L=21, class/area Hhx/360 on 16 August) was the most active region from 13-16 August, producing multiple C-class solar flares. Many of these events were associated with discrete radio frequency bursts, Type II and Type IV radio sweeps, suggesting CME liftoff. Due to the location of Region 1543, many of the CME’s were Earth-directed but very little effects were forecast upon arrival at Earth. Region 1543 decayed from a beta-gamma to a simple beta group during the summary period. On 17 August, from around the east limb, multiple M-class solar flares were observed, including an M2.4 x-ray event at 17/1319 UTC as well as an M1 x-ray event at 17/1720 UTC. On18 August, five more M-class solar flares were observed, the largest being an M5/Sf x-ray flare at 18/0102 UTC with an associated 120 sfu Tenflare. As the day progressed, Region 1548 (N20, L=232, class/area Cso/120 on 18 August) was numbered and determined to be the active region responsible for all of the M-class events. From 16-18 August, multiple CME’s were observed in LASCO C2 imagery, all appeared to originate from Region 1548. Due to the location around the east limb, none of these CME’s were forecast to arrive at Earth.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels during the period

Geomagnetic field activity was at predominantly quiet to active levels throughout the summary period. Quiet to unsettled levels prevailed from 13-16 August as solar wind speeds, as measured by the ACE spacecraft, remained at nominal background levels. An increase to quiet to unsettled levels with isolated active periods were observed from 17-19 August. Weak CME effects were observed on 17 August and late on 18 August, measurements from the ACE spacecraft indicated a solar sector boundary (SSB) crossing. Following the SSB, coronal hole effects were observed on 19 August with solar wind speeds, increasing from below 400 km/s to almost 600 km/s

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 August - 15 September 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a slight chance for more M-class events from 20-31 August as Region 1548 continues to evolve and rotate across the disk. A return to predominantly low levels is expected to prevail from 01-15 September.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be normal levels from 20-21 August. An increase to high flux levels is expected from 22-26 August. A return to normal - background levels is expected to prevail for the remainder of the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at mostly quiet levels with a few brief periods of quiet to unsettled levels due to recurrent coronal hole high speed stream effects. From 20 - 22 August, 25-25 August, 08-09 September, and 15 September quiet to unsettled levels are expected. For the remainder of the forecast period, mostly quiet levels are expected to prevail.

Australia
9580 Radio Australia, 1240, English service with station ID as, "this is Radio Australia." Total Rugby program and information about the Olympics and rugby, followed by newscast at 1300. News covered on the Olympics, rebel fighting in the Philippines and more world news. Good signal with some fading, no noise. (Kincaid, MI/MARE 689)

2368.5, Radio Symban, 1138-1204.* Phenomenal reception! By far one of their best days. Greek music and songs to station sign off announcement with frequency. Edited

Bangladesh
Bangladesh Betar test transmission, 2010, 15520 (SINPO 55444). Empty carrier with a big hum stretching from 15510 to 15530. Around 2014, an apparently additional signal came on and was switched off again (same spectral range as the hum, but more homogeneously filled. Looked like DRM, but DREAM didn't detect any DRM). When checking again at 2025, subcontinental music, slightly overmodulated, ID at 2030. In silent periods between songs, the big hum returned into the audio feed. Some kind of "carrier" accompanied the music at +/- 4.5 kHz which was beyond the modulation range, so it could be filtered out easily. Listened to the music until 2045. At 2100 and 2110 still on, but silent carrier with the big hum. At 2136 and 2152 still empty carrier without the hum, still same signal strength.

7250, Bangladesh Betar. Better reception than yesterday at 1152, August 7 with subcontinent songs. Station ID and time pips at 1200. News in assumed Bengali till 1205 followed by male/female chatting. Ads at 1231, news 1235-1240. News in English (item about an auto accident, etc.) followed by “news commentary.” More subcontinent songs and a series of speeches in English till 1259, 1300* when they went to a test tone. (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)

15520, Bangladesh Betar, 1743-1859.* Poor reception and sounded like some white noise jamming. Was in English, but hard to make out a lot of what was said, just bits and pieces. Thanks again to Swopan Chakroborty for the tip about this frequency.

Highlights:
1743: External Service interval signal to time pips News in English, break in the news for ID: “this is Bangladesh Betar bringing you the news.” Weather (“thundershowers”) followed by “news commentary.”

1801: Reciting from the Qur’an.

1830: Seemed to be the Voice of Islam program in English. Clearly talking in English about the holy month of Ramadan and holy Qur’an. Not sure just when this program actually started, 1801?

1836: Interesting break in the program to play pop song by Sting, “I’ll Be Watching You”.

1845: End of program; played pop and rap songs (Celine Dion “If You Asked Me To”, etc.)

1859: sounded like sign off announcement and went to test tone.

5050, CNR1, randomly from 1134 to 1300/* What is this all about? Noted for the first time today! // 6125 (strong). In Chinese mixing with and underneath Beibu Bay Radio (BBR), after 1300 BBR in the clear with their usual fair reception in Vietnamese. Strange! At first I was thinking it might be the return of the Voice of Strait after many years of being off this frequency, but turned out to be parallel to CNR1. I listen here daily for about 10 to 15 minutes checking for the return of the low powered Australian station, Ozy Radio, but not heard yet (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA)

Bangladesh Betar - new transmitter built up on 7250 kHz, test transmissions of foreign service. Quite good reception this evening from Bangladesh Betar external service, resumed on 7250 kHz with a new transmitter.

Heard here from tune-in at 1630 UT when it was carrying Bengali until sign-off at 1730 UT. After a 15 minute pause, the English service commenced at 1745 UT with ID, program preview and news - currently in progress. English to Europe is scheduled to continue until 1900 UT. Announced as "Bangladesh Betar overseas service". Great to hear this back on shortwave, it must be at least three years since the old 7250 kHz transmitter failed.
(Dave Kenny-UK, BrDXC-UK Aug 7)

7250 Dhaka audio quality IS NOT CLEAN.

At 1414 UT Aug 7. Local Asian subcontinent lady singer performed. Around 1405 UT, seemingly news reading. But at 1340 to 1347 UT close-down heard 1020 Hertz test tone continously. Broadcasting pause after 1347 UT, switched off totally. From 1400 UT onwards heard accompanied by a 140 to 160 Hertz buzz hum tone also, also heard during pauses when music stopped and control level is high, at 1418 UT. !

[later] Re 7250 kHz co-channel, before Vatican Radio Rosario starts at 1840 UT, heard both Radio Bangladesh ahead with ID at 1818 UT on even 7250 kHz, here on S=9+25dB level,

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 30 July - 05 August 2012

Solar activity was at low to moderate levels. The summary period began at moderate levels due to an M1/Sn flare at 30/1548Z from Region 1536 (S22, L=173, class/area Eao/100 on 01 August). Later on 30 July, Region 1538 (S22, L=117, class/area Eso/220 on 04 August) produced a C6 x-ray event with Type II (730 km/s) and Type IV radio signatures and an associated non-Earth-directed CME. From 31 July through the remainder of the summary period, solar activity was at low levels. On 04 August, Region 1539 (S22, L=099, class/area Cro/030 on 02 August) produced a long duration event (LDE) that began at 04/1104Z, peaked at 04/1500Z and ended at 04/1649Z. Associated with this event was an Earth-directed, partial halo CME with an estimated velocity of 905 km/s. Other activity of note included an LDE from Region 1535 (N18, L=135, class/area Eai/150 on 01 August). At 31/1130Z, the region produced a C5/Sf with Type II (880 km/s) and Type IV radio signatures and an associated non-Earth-directed CME. Later in the day, Region 1536 produced a C4/Sf at 31/1727Z with a Type II (592 km/s) radio signature. On 02 August, a C1 x-ray event was recorded in the vicinity of old Region 1526 (S17, L=273) which rotated around the west limb on 01 August. Associated with this event was a non-Earth-directed CME. Region 1539 produced a C2/1f flare at 03/0600Z with a Type II (622 km/s) radio
signature and a non-Earth-directed CME.

A greater than 10 MeV proton enhancement at geosynchronous orbit was observed late on 02 August through midday on 03 August with a peak of 1 pfu at 02/1820Z. This enhancement was most likely associated with the 02 August limb event.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels throughout the summary period.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to minor storm conditions. The period began at quiet to unsettled levels with isolated active intervals due to a period of sustained southward IMF Bz to -8 nT from about 30/ 0600 - 1800Z. From 31 July to midday on 02 August, quiet levels were observed. At about 02/1000Z, the 28 July CME arrived at the ACE spacecraft producing active to minor storm periods from 02/1200 - 2100Z. During this time frame, IMF Bz was negative multiple times, peaking at about -12 nT at 02/1220Z while solar wind readings indicated a slight increase from near 450 km/s to about 500 km/s. For the remainder of the summary period, quiet to unsettled conditions prevailed.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 August - 01 September 2012

Solar activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels through 14 August as Regions 1539 and 1540 (S27, L=087, class/area Dso/110 on 05 August) rotate off the visible disk. From 15 - 20 August, mostly low levels are expected. A return to low to moderate levels is expected from 21 August - 01 September as Regions 1532 (S20, L=185, class/area Fho/510 on 28 July) and 1536 rotate back onto the visible disk.

A greater than 10 MeV proton event at geosynchronous orbit is possible through 14 August as Regions 1539 and 1540 traverse the visible disk and again from 21 August - 01 September as Regions 1532 and 1536 rotate back onto the visible disk.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at predominately quiet levels from 06 - 07 August. Quiet to unsettled conditions with isolated active intervals are expected on 08 - 09 August due to glancing blow effects from the 04 August CME. Predominately quiet conditions are expected from 10 - 18 August, 21 - 23 August, and 27 August - 01 September. Quiet to unsettled conditions with isolated active intervals are expected from 19 - 20 August and again from 24 - 26 August due to weak coronal hole high-speed stream effects.
