HCJB Global Transmitter Installed at TWR's Site in Swaziland
Nov. 25, 2008
A new 100,000-watt shortwave transmitter built at the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart, Ind., is on the air at the Trans World Radio (TWR) site in Swaziland, broadcasting a message of hope across Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.

Through a cooperative effort between the two organizations, the HC100 transmitter began broadcasting about 12 hours a day on Oct. 23, replacing an outdated Continental unit and joining two other HC100s, also from Elkhart. "The results of the broadcasts from this transmitter are that people come to Christ and they are encouraged in their faith," said Ray Alary, TWR's director of operations in Africa. "For those with HIV/AIDS, we can encourage them in what seems a hopeless situation. Through Jesus we all have hope. The primary target areas are eastern and southern Africa, but our transmitters in Swaziland reach locations as far away as Pakistan. We broadcast in approximately 30 languages with our three HC100 transmitters."

Alary added that TWR's partnership with HCJB Global "goes back a long way and has taken many different forms over the years . . . it is a model of a well-functioning partnership where each party gains from our ability to work together." The artnership includes having a number of TWR missionaries serving at the Technology Center in Elkhart. Among those is veteran engineer Larry McGuire who lived in Swaziland for 16 years before moving to Elkhart in 1990. He helped build and install all three HC100s at the Swaziland site, spending 2½ weeks in Swaziland in October to put the new transmitter on the air. "The new transmitter is much more efficient and has a clearer, more understandable signal than the one it replaced," McGuire said. "The HC100 is also easier to maintain because it was designed by missionary engineers for that purpose."

Alary said that having "three identical transmitters at the same site makes our operation in Swaziland very efficient. In addition, we have purchased more than 20 suitcase transmitters through HCJB." Tom Lowell, chairman of TWR's board of irectors, said the new transmitter has many economic advantages. "For example, parts needed to keep the old equipment on the air were expensive. The Continental transmitter uses three large tubes, at $13,000 each, compared to the HC100's single tube. That's an immediate savings of $26,000 on parts alone! The HC100 also operates much more efficiently, saving us $12,000 per year on our electric bill in Swaziland."

McGuire added that the installation of the HC100 in Swaziland culminates years of work and planning dating back to about 2000. Construction of this transmitter, the ninth of its type, was completed in 2005. After TWR agreed to purchase the unit, it was modified to, and tested for, Swaziland requirements, then packed and loaded onto a truck in Elkhart on July 31. It then traveled across the Atlantic Ocean by ship, arriving in Durban, South Africa, on Sept. 9.

From there it went by train to Matsapha, Swaziland, where it cleared customs "almost immediately," he said. Finally it went by truck to TWR's transmitter site on a ranch 20 miles from Manzini along the White Mbuluzi River, arriving on Sept. 18.
"The day it arrived, there 'happened' to be a work crew from a church in Elkhart that had been renovating the building," McGuire continued. "They were way ahead of schedule, so they helped unload the transmitter from the container, got it in position and started putting up the heavy parts and then built the fascia-all before

I started working on the installation on Oct. 6. I was very amazed. That's never happened before!" When McGuire said the entire installation process went moothly. "The cooperation was great-very beneficial for both." David Russell, director of the HCJB Global Technology Center, calls it a "privilege to work closely with engineers of TWR Africa. During just the past year we have cooperated with TWR on projects in Benin, Kenya and Swaziland. We are presently refurbishing a used 50,000-watt AM transmitter that will be used at TWR's Swaziland broadcast facilities.
"It gives us a great sense of fulfillment to be able to support our fellow kingdom workers at TWR through the provision of technical consulting, equipment, installations and maintenance," Russell added. "By pooling our strengths we are able to be more effective in the Lord's harvest fields." (Press Release)

Sri Lanka destroys Tamil Tigers radio station

The leader of the Tamil Tigers has said Sri Lanka is “living in a dreamland of military victory”, moments after government jets for a second year running destroyed a rebel radio station broadcasting his annual address. Even with a Sri Lankan military offensive besieging the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) self-declared capital, leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran remained defiant in his yearly rallying cry.
“The Sinhala state has, as never before, placed its trust on its military strength,” he said, referring to Sri Lanka’s government. “It is living in a dreamland of military victory. It is a dream from which it will awake. That is certain.” Prabhakaran’s speech, usually recorded beforehand at one of his jungle hideouts, went out worldwide on the Internet despite the air raid.
Air force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said the strike completely destroyed a radio station close to Kilinochchi, the northern town the LTTE has declared as capital of the separate state it wants to create and calls Tamil Eelam.

It's a radio show, it's a website, it's a lifestyle. It's Curious Orange -
30 minutes of Dutchness on Radio Netherlands Worldwide

We'll hear about scientology in the Netherlands - whether it'll take hold... or be banned. And, with the government reviewing and re-evaluating euthanasia legislation, we hear a doctor's perspective on the right to die.

Of course, Perro de Jong will be in. He'll turn his "Critical Eye" to a 104-year-old Dutch singer who's not exactly being welcomed back to his home town in Holland. And we'll hear a "dodelijk" listener Lost in Translation story. To lighten things up, we'll feature music from Voicst - a Dutch indy band with an international following.

Test begin for BBC/DW DRM service to begin 2009

Media Network contributor Christopher Lewis reported this morning “0858 UTC. I am currently listening to BBC and Deutsche Welle Test (the text as appeared on the display) on 9610 kHz DRM. I am not sure where the transmission is being relayed from, but signal is steady, with stereo audio. Programming is featuring reports about the environment, agriculture, sciences etc. Test continues at 0900 on 9610 khz, opening with a bulletin of DW news in English.”
In fact, the transmission on 9610 was from Sines, Portugal. In the DRM Sofware Radio Forums, the complete schedule is given for the tests which will continue at 0500-2300 UTC today, tomorrow and Thursday. There are also tests scheduled on mediumwave 1296 kHz at 0500-0700 and 1700-2300 UTC. Visit http://www.drmrx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2033
for the full schedule.

Related story:
BBC World Service and Deutsche Welle have announced plans to launch a joint radio service to Europe on DRM shortwave. The new stream, which will be entirely in English, is expected to go live in early 2009. It will be available from early morning till late at night targeting Western and Central Europe and a potential audience of 170 million listeners with global news and current affairs and a rich mix of in-depth analysis, documentaries and cultural programs. The service will provide a multimedia offer of audio and text, the latter coming automatically from the BBC News website.
Erik Bettermann, Director General at Deutsche Welle, said: “It is great that two of the world’s most established broadcasters can work together on a project of this scale. This is an exciting venture that will offer European listeners top class content and provides the perfect opportunity to reintroduce listeners to DRM.”

Russia
Checking for Radio Rossii parallels, 0108-0118, Nov 24:5935 (poor under QRM), 7140 (poor), 7200 (very good), 7320 (fair),7345 (poor with QRM). Surprised to hear them doing so well this early. Too much QRM to hear 6075 at this time, but heard them at 0140.

6075, Radio Rossii Kamchatka (presumed ID) via Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka, checked again and found them well on top of the QRM, 0140-0200, Nov 24; surprised to find another time besides 0810-0900 that broadcasts their local programming (probably on from 0110-0200); many mentions of Kamchatka; gives phone numbers; at 0143: "This is Kamchatka"; Russian ballads and pop songs; 0200 strong DW sign-on; at 0200 clearly heard just the "Programa Radio Rossii" ID after the pips, was fair till 0200.

6085, Radio Rossii via Krasnoyarsk, at 0205, Nov 24, noted parallel to 5935 (poor-fair under QRM), 6075 (poor mixing with DW), 6140 (poor), 7200 (fair with QRM), 7320 (fair), 7345 (fair). Quick check at 0241 found them not in parallel with the other Radio Rossii stations (and of course not parallel to GTRK Magadan either), so assume this could be their local/regional programming, but needs more monitoring to know just what it is. Must be from 0210-0300.

7320, GTRK Magadan, 0224-0300, Nov 24; local/regional programming (assume from 0210-0300); BoH jingle and ID (could not make it out, but clearly no mention of "Rossii"); per helpful input from Mauno Ritola who listened to my audio clip, they gave telephone numbers and address to Magadan and Magadan oblast weather so clearly this was a local/regional program; folk song; fair-poor; parallel to 5935 (poor under QRM), after 0300 went back to "Programa Radio Rossii" IDs (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)

Sri Lanka
6045, IBC Tamil (tentative), 0007-0043, Nov 24, was checking for Mexico and heard this. English commentary about UN and cease fire, 0015 into assume Tamil, some pop music, seemed to sign-off around 0100, poor with a het (Mexico QRM?), first time I have ever noted them here (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)

Tibet
6200, "Holy Tibet" program via Xizang PBS - Lhasa, 1630- 1700, Nov 24, all in English, " ... will learn more about Tibet: the people and the culture, on Holy Tibet", talking about the money the government puts into Tibet to help it develop, mostly plays indigenous Tibetan music and chanting/singing, woman describes in detail the various features of the Potala Palace (White Palace, etc.), "Don't miss visiting the Potala Palace", says something like: "Holy Tibet is the window to the world for Tibet" (Ron Howard, Asilomar Beach, CA, Etón E1)

Radio a key player in Bhutan's democracy
Radio has been a key player in Bhutan's democratisation process, an ABUmeeting in Bali heard today.Jaganath Sharma of Bhutan's public broadcaster, BBS, said radio had played amajor role in the process that led to the country's first free elections inMarch this year.It had informed and educated the public in the run-up to the elections, including reporting from all 47 constituencies and holding a series of livedebates among the candidates.Mr Sharma was speaking in a discussion on radio's role in promoting goodgovernance, held as part of the annual meeting of the ABU Programme Committee."Radio stood its ground over time and with its advantageous reach, providedevery Bhutanese with much needed information before and after the historicelections," he said.Another speaker, Neil Curry of the BBC, said one of the greatest roles ofpublic service radio was to help bring about people's participation in the democratic process. It could also help build transparency andaccountability.Essential for achieving this was an adherence to journalistic values andeditorial guidelines, he said.Thursday 20 Nov 2008http://abu.org.my/public/dsp_page.cfm?articleid=4074&urlsectionid=715&specialsection=ART_FULL&pageid=247&PSID=2807----(Alokesh Gupta, New Delhi, India)

Thanks to Bruce Churchill's recent tips, heard long interview (woman asking briefquestions, followed by long answers by a man), BBS schedule indicatesa cultural program in Dzongkha, brief indigenous string instrumental music at start and end of interview, 0051 segment of indigenous chanting till 0100. Intermittent light QRM from Spanish speakingstation (assume Colombia), mostly poor, but almost certain it wasthem (their sunrise was 0026 and my local sunset was 0054).[Ron Howard, CA]

This program may only be broadcast on Sunday. I need toc heck about Saturday. Back in 2005, I often heard Gary and Jacqueline(Ms. Diao) with their "Focus on China" program, heard back then on Sat.& Sun. from 1430-1500, but then they changed the schedule to a time Icould not hear them, so hearing them today with their new schedule wasvery nice. In the coming weeks their reception should improve. (Ron Howard-CA)

Clandestine
3985, Echo of Hope (presumed), 1446, Nov 13, in Korean, heavy jamming,// 6003 (light-moderate jamming and QRM from Voice of Russia on 6005)and 6348 (also jammed). Have never been able to hear CNR-2/CBR whichis listed as being on 3985 (Ron Howard, CA)

Tuned in at 0109 to hear an open carrier with test tone, tone went off justbefore the start of the AIR interval signal, into subcontinent music and singing. At 0125 briefly played interval signal again, lost after that, very weak, best inUSB. Hope this will improve over the next month so I can get somedetails for a reception report. Their local sunrise was coming up at0138. [Ron Howard, CA]

7115 AIR heard at 1730 on 20 Nov. in Maldivian with male talk and no interval signal or sign on formalities just carrier and then right into programming. The audio was so distorted, I could barely make out what was being said. The spectral display looked sick and there was a very bad buzz on the audio. Sounds like a filter cap in the main supply or in the modulator section isabout to blow its oats. This is one sick transmitter and someone in mastercontrol should be called on the carpet for allowing this to get on the air, and their engineer should be hung up by his/her thumbs! (Al Muick, Kabul, AFG)

Liberian Broadcasting System goes nation wide

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has handed over to the Liberian Government newly renovated and expanded facilities of the Liberia Broadcasting System. Wednesday’s ceremony also marked the formal launch of the China/LBS Radio Project, under which the Chinese Government has provided a 10-thousand kilowatt [sic] FM transmitter to boost the station’s radio transmission throughout the country. A second transmitter has also been provided by the Chinese to relay English programs produced by China Radio International throughout Liberia. The transmission will also provide 3 hours of radio programming in Chinese.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, lauded the growing partnership between the Governments of China and Liberia. The President acknowledged the constructive role China continues to play in all areas of government’s development under the country’s Poverty Reduction Strategy.
China’s decision to expand the broadcast facilities of the country, an Executive Mansion release quotes the President as saying, could not have come at a better time, given the ever increasing need to adequately inform Liberians of the progress taking place in the country. The President also lauded the management of the Liberia Broadcasting system for its leadership role and partnership with Chinese experts in ensuring the completion of the project.
The President reminded the management of the Liberia Broadcasting System to ensure that the station remains objective, neutral, and apolitical in the dissemination of information to the Liberia people, adding, ‘concentrate on development.’
LBS Director Charles Snetter praised the President and the Governments of Liberia and China for supporting the development of the nation’s broadcasting sector. He spoke of the many challenges facing the station, but noted that LBS remains prepared to play a pivotal role in government’s recovery drive. Mr Snetter expressed the hope that government will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure that the station continues to play its role in the reconstruction of the country.
The cost of the LBS-China Aided FM Radio Expansion Project is put at US $4 million. The station is now well placed to cover the entire country with relay stations in six counties, including Lofa, Bong, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh, Bomi, and Maryland. The facilities are also equipped with a microwave satellite link, to boost transmitted signals from the System’s headquarters in Monrovia to its outstations around the country.
Under terms of an Understanding between China and Liberia, the Government of China will provide maintenance for the facilities for one year, after which Radio China International will contract a Chinese Firm to provide maintenance for an additional four years.

Puntland authorities reopen Radio Gaalkacyo

Text of report by Somali independent Radio Gaalkacyo on 17 November

Radio Gaalkacyo [in Gaalkacyo, the provincial town of Mudug Region, central Somalia] has resumed operations following a brief closure by police in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, but the radio director, Hassan Muhammad Jama (Jid-hun) remains in custody.
The decision to reopen the radio station was announced by Mudug regional commissioner Abdirizaq Darwish. He said the presidential decree issued recently was only instructing the arrest of the radio director and not the closure of the station.
Mr Darwish said Radio Gaalkacyo can resume its operations and has issued an apology to the radio’s staff over the misunderstanding of the president’s decree.
Somali Professional Journalists Association [SOPJA] based in Gaalkacyo has accused the Puntland regional administration of violating the freedom of the media and demanding that the media operate under an unsatisfactory system.
However, local residents have expressed concern over the arrest of the Radio Gaalkacyo director.

Somalia: Radio Gaalkacyo closed down
Text report of report by Somali opposition Radio Voice of Mudug on 16 November The police of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland have closed down Radio Gaalkacyo, an independent radio station that operates in Gaalkacyo [HQ of Mudug Region], and arrested its director Hasan Muhammad Jama. Sources say the radio was closed down after airing programmes and reports about the forthcoming Puntland presidential elections and having special interviews with candidates. Reports also say Radio Gaalkacyo’s highlighting of the Puntland electoral commission could have led to the closure.
The closure of Radio Gaalkacyo and the arrest of its director have coincided with the arrival of the Puntland president Mahmud Muse [Gen Adde] and his entourage in Gaalkacyo town. The president will be overnight there campaigning. The Puntland regional administration has been accused of pressurizing and violating media freedom in the region.

Andy Sennitt adds: This station, formerly known as Radio Free Somalia, was for a time also on shortwave. Its website also appears to have been closed.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
10 - 16 November 2008

Solar activity was very low through the period. New-cycle polarity Region 1008 (N33, L = 121, class/area Dso/080 on 11 November) produced isolated low-level B-class flares on 10 and 12 November.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit increased to high levels during 10 - 15 November.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels during 10 - 15 November. Activity increased to active levels during 16/0000 - 0600 UTC, then decreased to quiet levels for the rest of the period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated the 16 November active levels were
associated with a coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The HSS began late on 15 November, reached a peak velocity of 528 km/sec at 16/1216 UTC, then gradually decreased during the rest of the period. Interplanetary magnetic field changes associated with the CH HSS
included an increase in Bt (peak 14 nT at 15/2021 UTC) and intermittent periods of southward Bz (minimum -13 nT at 15/2225 UTC).

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
19 November - 15 December 2008

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 26 November - 03 December and 06 - 12 December.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels during 19 - 24 November. Activity is expected to increase to mostly unsettled levels during 25 - 26 November due to a recurrent CH HSS. Quiet levels are expected during 27 November - 03 December followed by an increase to unsettled to active levels during 04 - 06 December due to another recurrent CH HSS. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 07 - 15 December.

Madagascar
Update on World Christian Broadcasting -Madagascar Project. KNLS broadcasts from Alaska 20 hours per day in Chinese, Russian and English. Soon we will be broadcasting an additional 30-35 hours from our new station in Madagascar in at least three additional languages of Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese. With these additions, we will broadcast a total of as many as 50-55 hours daily in six of the eight most spoken languages on earth. The other two languages in the top eight are Hindi and Bengali. Both are Indian languages. Our plan is to use English in our broadcasts to that nation.
The construction in Madagascar is on schedule. The guardhouse and staff home are built and painted. As of September 12, the floors of the transmitter building were being poured and the walls were expected to go up shortly. Jeff Jaworski of the KNLS staff in Alaska has joined Kevin and Nancy Chambers in Madagascar to help with the construction. Two members of the Malagasy staff visited the U.S. this past summer to learn to dismantle and assemble the new transmitters. This experience will enable them to assemble and install the transmitters when they arrive in Madagascar.
Hurricane Ike has delayed the shipment of two 40-foot containers from Houston, although the containers were not damaged in the storm. (Nov. NASB)

Moldova
[Pridnestrovye] Tiraspol. Official radio in Moldova's rebel region in dire situation - paper.
The state-run radio Pridnestrovye in Moldova's breakaway Dniester region has cut its broadcasts from 23 to a bit more than three hours a day due to the lack of proper office space, the eponymous Dniester official daily reported on 5 November.
The paper said that because of the last summer's floods the station's radio equipment and personnel were evacuated from its premises in central Tiraspol, but no new office place has been allocated to it so far. The radio channel's equipment is stored in a garage, and journalists work at a canteen of the breakaway region's information ministry.
While information minister Vladimir Belyayev is still in the process of making a decision whether to repair the station's old premises or to find a new office for it, 100 out of the station's 146 staff members have been sent on an open-ended leave, with their wages cut by 30 per cent.
Commenting on the radio station's critical situation, the Russkiy Proryv! weekly said on 5 November that the situation was aggravated by disagreements between the Dniester parliament and the information ministry. According to the law on the state-run media in the Dniester region, all official radio and TV channels should list parliament and the president as founders, but the ministry took upon itself all managerial functions over the Pridnestrovye radio channel, the weekly said.
It recalled that in 2007, parliament initiated a probe into the ministry's activities linked to the radio station and unveiled numerous violations, including money-laundering. Members of the Dniester parliament tabled a proposal then that the radio station sign a separate agreement with president Igor Smirnov and radio Pridnestrovye become answerable to parliament, the paper said.

CVC International set to launch online station

International broadcaster CVC is set to launch its new online radio station at www.cvcradio.in, on Monday, Novemver 24, 2008.

The independent radio station will offer the best music from around the globe, including all the latest international chart music as well as Hindi hits,

The company that boasts of state of the art studios in Karnataka and Australia and correspondents in 26 countries around the world, says it will have integrated live programming functioning from two different corners of the globe. Listeners will be able to respond to programmes by contacting radio jockeys by SMS or email to request songs, express views on topics and shout out to their friends. "All our programs are interactive and focus on getting the listeners involved and even sharing their opinions on air," says company spokesperson Aimee Pearce.

“CVC’s unique, hybrid sound reflects the melting pot of urban India,” says CVC’s Director Mike Edmiston. “When I have coffee at a café in Mumbai, I can drink beans from Kenya, from a cup made in China, while listening to music from the US and reading the news from all over India. The world is a fusion of cultures now and CVC mirrors that reality.”

CVC claims to have six years broadcast experience in the Asia Pacific region and believes the internet represents the future of radio. "CVC is a not-for-profit organization which is fantastic because it means we don’t have to compromise our sound with advertisements. This means that the listener gets more time to listen to their favourite RJs, express their views, hear their favourite music and get all the latest Indian and international news," says the company.

The station would also be eager to involve talented emerging artists and give them a platform to showcase their music. "We would encourage bands and musicians to get in contact with us so we can feature their music on some of our programs," says Pearce. "We take pride in being a radio station that is for all Indian youth. We wholeheartedly believe that living in a small town, does not constitute having a small mind and we provide a platform for all Indian youth to get involved and share their views in ways that they may not have had the opportunity to do before. That’s why we play a wide range of music genres and talk about a variety of different topics that affect all Indians."

CVC also hopes to raise its online profile with advertising on music sites and social networking sites that speak to young people where they are at. "We are also keen to expand our promotional strategy in the future by taking our name to the streets in a variety of different ways including the possibility of doing Outside Broadcasts," she adds.

“We’re living in a digital world. The next logical step for radio is to go beyond offering a one-way monologue and engage in an interactive conversation with listeners. The internet is the best medium to facilitate that” says Edmiston.

"CVC wants to at the forefront of internet radio. As India expands rapidly technologically, we want to make sure we have the services available to cater for the increasing number of technology-hungry young people. We want to move away from niche markets and establish ourselves as a station that is targeted and accessible to all young Indians," he concludes.

We look at the right to die with 'dignity' with a Dutch nurse who has assisted numerous suicides, and a campaigner who is opposed to the practice.

Then, we look at how walls and fences influence how we treat each other. We hear about a Palestinian village surrounded by a wall, meet Texans who don't want a border fence with Mexico, and learn how Greenland has a prison system without walls.

'The Simple Life' - by Naema Tahir

This season Radio Books highlights work from the diverse immigrant community of the Netherlands and Belgium. Naema Tahir was born in Great Britain but moved to the Netherlands with her Pakistani parents when she was ten years old. She studied law at Leiden University.

Her Radio Books story is a retelling of the classic 'Romeo and Juliet' set in 16th-century Lahore. A Hindu boy and a Muslim girl fall in love despite the division between their two families.

We look at the toxic mess that stems from a toxic waste case. In 2006 the ship Probo Koala tried to unload a cargo of waste at Amsterdam's port. Dock workers noticed a dangerous chemical cloud coming from the liquid waste. They declared it toxic and refused to process it. So the Probo Koala took its toxic cargo to Ivory Coast where it was dumped on land, killing 17 Ivorians and causing skin and breathing problems for thousands more.

Two years on, and the fallout continues as individuals, companies and even governments attempt to pass the buck. Find out more on Earthbeat.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
03 - 09 November 2008

Solar activity was very low to low through the period. New-cycle polarity Region 1007 (N35, L = 252, class/area Dso/080 on 03 November) produced isolated low-level C-class flares on 03 and 04 November.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit increased to high levels on 06 and 09 November.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels during 03 - 06 November. Activity increased to unsettled to active levels from early on 07 November to midday on 09 November, During this same period, high latitudes observed active to minor storm levels with an isolated major storm period midday on 08 November. Activity decreased to quiet levels midday on 9 November through the end of the summary period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated a
recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) commenced on 07 November. Solar wind velocities increased from a low of 279 km/sec at 06/1704 UTC to a high of 601 km/sec at 08/2003 UTC. Velocities began to gradually decrease early on 09 November as the HSS
subsided. Interplanetary magnetic field changes associated with the onset of the CH HSS included increased Bt (peak 12 nT at 07/2007 UTC) and intermittent periods of southward Bz (minimum -10 nT at 07/2057 UTC).

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
12 November - 08 December 2008

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels. However, there will be a slight chance for low activity (isolated low-level C-class flares) during 20 November - 03 December with the return of (old) Region 1007 (N35, L=252) to the visible disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 12 - 15 November, 26 November - 03 December, and again during 06 - 08 December.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels during 12 - 23 November. Activity is expected to increase to mostly unsettled levels during 24 - 28 November due to a recurrent CH HSS. Quiet levels are expected during 29 November - 02 December followed by an increase to unsettled to isolated active levels during 03 - 06 December due to another recurrent CH HSS. Activity is expected to be mostly quiet during 07 - 08 December as the HSS subsides.

Voice of Russia begins broadcasting in Iraqi Kurdistan

Text of report in English by heavyweight liberal Russian newspaper Kommersant website on 12 November

The Voice of Russia radio station began broadcasting in Kurdish in Iraqi Kurdistan yesterday. Station spokesmen say the new project is non-political and its goal is to bring the Russian and Kurdish people closer together. Analysts say that the project has an obvious political nature and that it is a means of advancing Russian interests in Kurdistan and throughout the Middle East.
The Voice of Russia had considered a Kurdish service for several years, but funding restriction had prevented its implementation until now. The station’s director of regional broadcasts Mikhail Baryshev told Kommersant that a daily one-hour shortwave broadcast in Kurdish premiered in May of this year. Yesterday [11 November] was the first broadcast on the FM band. Broadcasts originate in Erbil, Sulaimaniya, Kirkuk and Dohuk, Iraq. The broadcasts will be two hours long and will air in the mornings and evenings.
Baryshev said each broadcast will consist of news, a discussion of Russian foreign policy, especially in the Middle East, and informational programmes about Russia. “Unfortunately, in many regions, and particularly in Iraqi Kurdistan, people do not find out about Russia’s policies first hand,” Baryshev said. “Frequently that information is distorted. We will try to correct that situation.” The organizers of the project deny any underlying political goals, however. “We are mostly carrying out a humanitarian mission,” deputy general director of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Corp. Andrey Bystritsky told Kommersant in reference to the new broadcasts.
Observers say the broadcasts are part of a political project launched by the Russian consul in Erbil a year ago to raise Russia’s role in the region. Kurdistan is Iraq’s only stable region. It is rich in oil and has attracted many foreign companies. Baghdad has given the region considerable autonomy, and the region, which is at the crossroads of the Iraqi, Iranian, Turkish and Syrian borders is of great strategic importance.

BBC World Service temporarily broadcasting via RNW Malagascar relay

Serious flooding in Thailand has forced the BBC’s relay station at Nakhon Sawan off the air. It’s expected that the station will be silent until next Tuesday at the earliest. VT Communications has arranged temporary broadcasts from other sites. Until Nakhon Sawan is back in normal operation, the RNW Madagascar relay station is broadcasting BBC World Service programming towards India as follows:

English 0100-0200 UTC on 11955 kHz 250kW beam 050 degrees
Hindi 0230-0300 UTC on 15405 kHz 250 kW beam 050 degrees

Nigeria Cross River State plans new statewide broadcasting system

Nigeria’s Cross River State Government has awarded the contract for the supply and installation of complete UHF television/radio full transmission system for Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC). The Commissioner for Information and Orientataon, Ntufam Edet Okon Asim, who briefed newsmen at the end of the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, said the contract which will be undertaken in phases will cost about N958 million (US$8,317,416).
Asim disclosed that the contract is to be handled by a reputable contractor that has an impeccable track record in the electronic media industry, adding that it is intended to replace the epileptic [sic] transmission of the station whose services do not go beyond the shores of the state. He said with new 20 kW transmitters for both the radio and television, signals from the stations will cover the whole state.
(Source: This Day Online)
Andy Sennitt adds: Presumably this means that the mediumwave transmitter at Ogoja on 1134 kHz, currently listed as 10 kW, is to be replaced with a 20 kW transmitter.

Radio St. Helena broadcast set for Nov. 15

Radio St. Helena Day 2008 will be broadcast on 11092.5 KHz in USB on Saturday, 15. November 2008 as follows:

All times UTC Target areas

20:00 - 21:00 Japan
21:00 - 22:30 Europe
22:30 - 23:30 North America

Because of the very long "Revival" and "Double-Anniversary" transmissions in 2006 and 2007 and the especially heavy workload at Radio St. Helena during the entire second half of 2008, it was decided that RSD 2008 would be reduced to the above schedule. It is hoped that the times have been chosen so that reception in all areas will be acceptable.

The QSL procedure is the same as in 2006 and 2007, and the QSL address is :
Radio St. Helena , P.O. Box 93
Jamestown , St. Helena

Radio St. Helena: new alternate postal route for all letters to RSH

Dear Friends of Radio St. Helena,
In an attempt to avoid the well-known and unfortunate problems with the reception reports sent to Radio St. Helena for the Radio St. Helena Day shortwave broadcasts in the past years since 1998, an alternate postal route has been sought. With the considerable help of and excellent suggestions by the Postmistress , Mrs. Henry, and her assistant, Mrs. Benjamin, of the Ascension Island Post Office, an alternate postal address and path has been found .

Therefore, ALL LETTERS to Radio St. Helena may be sent to the following
address.

Radio St. Helena
P.O.Box 93
Jamestown
St. Helena Island
STHL 1ZZ

--- Via AIRMAIL ----
Via United Kingdom and Ascension

VERY IMPORTANT:
The "new" part of this address is the last few lines, and it is
"essential" that this address be written exactly this way.

IMPORTANT :
Be certain to use enough postage on the letter, as if you were sending
the letter to the remotest part of the world. This is even true for
listeners in the UK.
With best greetings,
Robert Kipp 11. November 2008

Veterans Day 2008

Since 1919, Americans have observed November 11 as a day to honor the sacrifices of those who have fought to protect our freedom. Originally called Armistice Day, November 11 was declared by President Wilson, as a day of remembrance following the end of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I on November 11, 1918.

This Veterans Day, we honor those men and women of all services that are serving throughout the world, those veterans that have served and those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We thank and honor you for the sacrifices you have made for us.

Azerbaijan to end VOA and other local broadcasters
Authorities in Azerbaijan say they plan to halt local broadcasts by foreign stations by the end of the year. The chairman of Azerbaijan's National Television and Radio Council, Nushiravan Maharramli, says his country is not interested in granting local frequencies to foreign broadcasters. He says the change will affect the BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, U.S. financed Voice of America and Radio Liberty.www.voanews.com/english/2008-10-31-voa54.cfm (Alokesh Gupta, India)

Netherlands
For those of you who don't subscribe to the Media Network Newsletter, the following may be of interest. Several members of ODXA contacted me earlier this year to express interest, but of course that was before we decided to discontinue of shortwave service in English to North America. But if you are still interested, here's the information:

Do you have strong opinions on world events and issues? Radio Netherlands Worldwide is looking for people to join its Global Panel in English. When you join the Global Panel, you will regularly be invited to give us your opinion about current topics. The results of the surveys will be published on our website (www.radionetherlands.nl) and will be used in the programmes
of Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

We are also interested in learning more about how people around the world access and use what we produce. Your answers will assist us in planning our programmes and Web features.

If you want your opinion to count, we invite you to sign up. You can unsubscribe at any time. All information you send us will be treated in confidence and not passed to third parties.

Archive Hour set for November 22 program

One to make an advance note of:

Archive Hour – Here's Kenny
Saturday 22 November
8.00-9.00pm BBC RADIO 4

On the 40th anniversary of Kenny Everett's first BBC Radio 1 show, music journalist Mark Paytress reassesses the pioneering audio work of the DJ and looks at his place in broadcasting history.

Through interviews and an unprecedented collection of extremely rare archive material, Here's Kenny explores Everett's colourful presenting style and lifts the lid on the broadcaster's true private passion.

Everyone remembers Kenny Everett as a funny-man of the airwaves and television, whose confused private life took a tragic turn when he was diagnosed with Aids in 1993. He died two years later. Few know him as the extraordinary radio pioneer who would spend days at home creating wonderfully original jingles and trailers using techniques that were familiar only to avant-garde musicians and, much later, sampler fiends and hip-hop producers. His extraordinary approach to his work also came to the attention of The Beatles, who later invited him to "produce" two of the most avant-garde (and little heard) records in their catalogue.

Interviewees featured in the programme include Tony Blackburn, Keith Skues, pirate radio fans Chris Dannatt, Chris Baird, Stuart Russell and Jon Myer, and Beatles expert Richard Porter.

Shortwave program notes

Australia
Program Notes. Sunday Night, on November 9 had a very thoughtful focus on the role of the religious right in the US Presidential election. This was a breath of fresh air as far as a serious look at this issue without the shouting matches that have come to dominate such issues covered on American TV (especially FOX, CNN, and a bit less so on MSNBC), and talk radio as well (a major exception being most NPR / PRI programs). Reception was poor enough that I did not catch the names of those interviewed, though one had written a book on how James Dobson / Focus on the Family has dominated and is winning the cultural wars. The tone of the show seemed to indicate that this segment of Republicans is likely to remain a minority if they continue to focus almost exclusively on abortion and homosexuality. This all bodes poorly for Republicans over the next several presidential election cycles. Perhaps coming from Australia, at a distance where unreasoning passions do not dominate so strongly, it was possible to present a more even handed and thoughtful discussion of the future of the religious right and the Republican Party than is possible within this country.

Russia
Tough to hear in recent months, but now seems to be settled in on 6240 kHz English sign-on at 0200 UTC, reception generally fair-poor, largely readable but not great.

Moscow Mailbag on November 9th with Carl Watts, host, and answering the questions, Yuri ________. Yuri answered a rather strident anti-Russian letter on Russia’s conflict with Georgia. He suggested that the letter writer should go to BBC on-line to get more information on the background of that conflict. Further on in the program, Yuri spoke of his impressions on his visits to the United States, including in the late 1980s to Atlanta, Georgia. He thought they were friendly, polite, curious about other places, but woefully uninformed / misinformed on world affairs.

With the same quirky theme music, and a format very similar to that first heard by me in the mid 1960s with Joe Adamov, this is one program that is still around all these years. Here’s hoping that I can hear it (on short wave) for many years to come, though VOR is in the past few years generally tough to hear with limited hours and frequencies. This, like other broadcasters (now gone), a far cry from the 1960s when they came booming in on 10 (or 15, or 20) different frequencies.

Argentina
11710.81v, RAE, 0013-0105, Nov 4. Tango music, "R-A-E" IDs spelled out, plus "RAE Buenos Aires" in Japanese till 0100, then English, fair-poor, best in USB (R. Howard, CA)

Bolivia
6075, Radio Kausauki Coca, (presumed) 0950-1040. It's getting tough to hear this station here. The freq is occupied with others and has back ground noise inhibiting reception. Anyway, noted a male in Spanish language comments at 0950 for a minute or two, then the signal faded out. At 1002, copy returned with a female talking which was followed with fading again. At 1011, signal returned for a few brief moments then faded again. At 1029 music was heard, but believe that was coming from Radio Rossii which is on the freq and which took over by 1035. Bolivia was poor to nil during the period. (C.Bolland, FL)

6134.83, Radio Santa Cruz, 1040-1100. I can always count on RSC to be audible around this time. At tune in, noted a male in Spanish language comments. He is joined by a female at 1044. Signal remained poor however. (C. Bolland, FL)

6134.80, Radio Santa Cruz, 0100-0114*, Nov 1, Spanish talk. Ads. Spanish ballads. Local music. Many IDs. Sign off with local ranchero-style tune with many mentions of Santa Cruz in the lyrics. Poor to fair with adjacent channel splatter. (B. Alexander, PA)

6134.81, Radio Santa Cruz, 0011-0020. Noted an ID being given as I was tuning by, so t hought I'd log this then with a canned ID by a male, "... transmite Radio Santa Cruz ..." Then a female comments briefly and music follows. Signal was good. (C. Bolland, FL November 2, 2008

6155.23, Radio Fides, 2350-0015. Prior to the hour, noted a male in Spanish language comments over and with music. On the hour, time ticks while comments continue. At 0002, a second male talks briefly and gives ID as, "...Radio Fides...". Following this, the program becomes call in production with music and telephone calls all contributing to the confusion. Signal however, was good. (Chuck Bolland, FL November 1, 2008)

Brazil
11780, Radio Nacional do Amazonia, 0205-0210, Nov 1. Portuguese talk. IDs. Lite instrumental music. Good. No //s heard.(B. Alexander, PA)

Canada
6030, Calgary - CFVP relaying CKMX (AM 1060), 1412-1421 + 1603-1612, Nov 2. All infomercials (omega 3 super pills, etc.), fair-poor (R. Howard, CA)

Chad
6165, RNT, 2210-2231*, Oct 30, French talk. African hi-life music. Sign off with national anthem. Poor with some co-channel QRM and adjacent channel splatter. (B. Alexander)

China
Firedrake: Nov 2 & 3 on 6105 // 9000 // 9530. At 1510 + 1516 (earlier had caused QRM for Voice of Indonesia on 9525.90); Nov 2 on 9000 noted the usual 1600* - *1605 (R. Howard, CA)

6185, China Huayi Broadcasting,(pres) 1050-1100 Noted a female in Chinese language omments with only a brief interruption from a male at 1054. At 1056, I loose continuity when either a second station on the freq begins broadcasting or China turns to music which is mixing with the second station also in music. At 1100 nothing is certain since the freq becomes a tangle of signals twisted togather making listening impossible. At 1103 it is evident that the "top gun" in this mess is Mexico which either faded in all of the sudden or came on the air with music. I can hear China way down under Mexico with a threshold signal by 1105.(C. Bolland, FL)

Croatia
(non). via Germany, 7375, Voice of Croatia, 0300-0320,Oct 31, English “Croatia Today” news & current affairs program with news, sports & weather. Local pop music at 0314. Very good. Very weak on // 3984.97 - via Croatia. (B. Alexander, PA)

6165, Voice of Croatia, 0700-0704, Oct 31. Three minute English news bulletin. IDs. Lite instrumental music at 0704. Very good. Weak // 9470, 11690 - both via Germany. (B. Alexander, PA)

Eritrea
7100, VOBME, *0354-0400, Nov 1. Interval signal to talk at 0400. Covered by noise jammer at 0400. (Brian Alexander, PA)

7175, VOBME, *0354-0415, Nov 1. Interval signal to talk at 0400. Horn of Africa music. Poor to fair. (B. Alexander, PA)

Equatorial Guinea
15190, Radio Africa, 2205-2228, Nov 3. Sounded like Tony Alamo preaching, fair, no QRM (R. Howard, CA)

6250, Radio Nacional, Malabo, 0505-0600,Oct 31. Variety of African choral music, folk music, Afro-pop music. Spanish announcements. Radio Malabo ID. Fair. (B. Alexander, PA)

France
15605 Radio France International 1605-1630. English to East and Central Africa. News by lady until 1618 followed by two sports programs in succession. At 1630 announcer gave time check "It is 1630 UTC or 5:30 p-m in Paris. This is Radio France International." Tuned out. Beat the band signal. (B. Barker, PA)

Greenland
(Via Global Tuners in UK) Kalaalit Nunaata Radioa via OZL Radio Tasiilaq on 3815U hrd from 2041 to 2114 abrupt sign off after news bulletin and music. Best signal ever heard from any receiver location, almost like a power increase - SINPO 44544 with no "foghorn" ute QRM typical of 2007/2006 receptions. Could be a possible catch on ECNA as night condx get earlier. Woman announcer 2041 to 2050.5 (sounded like reading numbers at times), program tones 2050.5, woman announcer to 2051 then pop music tunes to 2100. Canned OZL announcement by woman (tent.) at 2100 followed by program interval isgnal and into news bulletin by woman (with remote reports) at 2100.5 to 2109. Progfram interval signal again and then instrumnetal music to 2110. Woman announcer 2110-2110.5 fol by two accordion inst pieces to abrupt off at 2113:50. Also heard on Global Tuner Sweden from 2021 to 2041 but much weaker and with high background noise and long-term fading. What sounded like choral music from tune in to 2030 with a long fade followed by a woman announcer fading in again 2038 until switched to the UK site. (B Churchill, CA)

India
4760 All India Radio-Leh, heard at 15.07 on 19 Oct. with good quality signals, but deep fading. Heard several telephone interviews, some traditional music and caught a full station ID at 15.30. I was SO hoping this was Port Blair on the same freq, but I guess that will take some more hard core DXing! (A. Muick, AFG)

4895 AIR Kurseong, heard at 13.38 on Oct. 19th with strong signals but deep and fluttery fading with station IDs, news and commentary and subcontinental music. (A. Muick, AFG)

4950 AIR Srinagar, heard at 13.26 on Oct. 19th, with surprisingly weak signals for 50kW and the closeness compared to other AIR stations being heard. Possible antenna orientation or terrain issues. Heard with IDs, excited talk, call-in show and pieces of music in between features. Signal became entirely useless at 13.44. (A. Muick, AFG)

Iran
6120, Voice of Justice, 0131-0203, Nov 4, in English, reciting from Qur'an, short promo for Islam, news (much about the anniversary of the 1979 capture of hostages at the US embassy, etc), commentary about Iran-India cooperation agreement, "Join us tomorrow for a detailed analysis" of the US elections, started out poor, fair by tune-out (R. Howard, CA)

Indonesia
9525.9, Voice of Indonesia, 1255-1315+, Nov 1. Tune-in to choral music. Talk in unidentified language. English ID at 1305 & into English programming with news at 1307. Poor. Weak but better than usual with a somewhat readable signal. Only a threshold signal when checked at 1350. (B. Alexander, PA)

9525.92, Voice of Indonesia, 1100-1115. I was nonchalantly listening to VOI here when their signal dropped of the air at 1104. It stayed off for about a minute and then came back with a female already into the news. So I thought I'd report it for prosperity or whatever. Eventhough the signal was fair, I couldn't make out the language being used? (C. Bolland, FL November 4, 2008)

9680, RRI Jakarta, 1113-1120. At tune in here, noted a male and female in Indonesian comments for a minute or two, then a short promo break and back to live comments between two males. Signal was fair.(Chuck Bolland, FL November 4, 2008)

Japan
12045 NHK World Radio Japan. Heard 16.40 on 25 Oct. in Japanese with a Karaoke game show. Rather interesting program and S5 signals all the way. (A Muick, AFG)

Mexico
6185, Radio Educacion, 1103-1110. As mentioned, this came on the air with music until 1105 when National Anthem is presented. Following that, ID and a series of canned promos. At 1109 more ID's along with time. "... Radio "Educacion?" ... Nacional Radio ...". At 1110 Mexican music presented. Signal was fair. (C. Bolland, FL)

6184.95, Radio Educacion, Mexico City, 0050-0105, Nov 1. Spanish talk. Lite instrumental music. Spanish ballads. IDs. Fair but some adjacent channel splatter. // 1060 - weak under KYW- Philadelphia. (B. Alexander, PA)

North Korea
[non]. 5910, Shiokaze/Sea Breeze, *1400-1430*, Nov 2, 3 and 4, (1357 sign-off of R. Nederland) clearly heard even with moderate noise (jamming?) which is on well before and after Shiokaze. After Shiokaze signed-off heard Anthem, reciting from the Qur'an, into Arabic (Iran?) (R. Howard, CA)

Malaysia
7270, Wai FM and Limbang FM via RTM(tentative). November-02 0833-0842 Male/female announcers with talk to romantic music. QRM from, presumed, PBS Nei Menggu. 22322 (lob-B).

Pakistan
6140 Radio Pakistan World Service. Sign-on at 13.30 in Urdu on 26 Oct. Not even listed on their new B08 sked on their website, yet there they were. S4 sigs until beat down by PBS Xizang on 6130. Stumbled across this while looking for Radio Gloria Intl. via Wertachtal. Tuned in at 1315 and there was nothing but a 1 kHz test tone (nice sidebands!) at about S3/S4, so I hung out, waiting for something to happen. 13.27 Radio Pakistan World service signed on. Not even so much as a carrier or a heterodyne from Gloria was detectable. (A Muick, AFG)

Papua New Guinea
3905, Radio New Ireland, Kavieng. November-02 0750-0802. Local music (female choir), 0752 lady announcer talks returning to a local music (like a ballad), 0757 lady talks, 0758 male talks with reverbed voice like an ads, 0800 local music. 34233 (lob-B).

Philippines
9615, Radio Veritas Asia, 1118-1130. Noted a female person in Mandarin comments over background music. At 1121 a second female joins in. This is probably a recorded segment since it seems like they are reading a script simular to what we see and hear with our local TV news. So assume it would have been prepared earlier. Signal was fair. (C. Bolland, FL November 4, 2008)

Russia
7200,Radio Rossi(presumed), Yakutsk. November-02 Russian scheduled 0822-0831. Male/female annoucners with talk to instrumnetal music. Weak signal SINPO 23322 (lob-B).

Tajikistan
4765.05, Tajik Radio 1, Yangiyul, Dushanbe, 1450-2001* and *2300-0100, Oct 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28, Tajik programmes of talk and local music, closed at 2001 with no formality. Opened again at 2300 with something like "Sikobordoran" (probably meaning "Good Morning") said several times by man and woman and they played a heavy rock record the Tajikian style to wake up listeners! Then followed poetry and "normal" folksongs. At 0100 ID: "In jo Dushanbe...." and national hymn by choir, 45333 with transmitter hum, ex 4635 which was no longer heard. Listen to recording: www.ratzer.at/audio.php , click mp3 Audiodatei, 2,8 MB. (DX Window/Bueschel, Petersen, Ratzer and Savolainen)Best wishes from Björn Franssopn, Gotland, Sweden

Thailand
15275, Radio Thailand, *0200-0230, Nov 3. English service on with bell/chimes, local news, history of the royal family, business news, several promos (Bangkok Airway, etc.), announced for WNAm, as usual gives wrong time ("10:00-10:30" their local time and "0300-0330 GMT"), fair (R. Howard, CA)

7255, Radio Thailand, 1108-1130 Noted a male in Thai language news and comments until 1114. At that time a series of ID's both in English and Thai. "This is HSK9, Radio Thailand's World Service, Broadcasting from the public relations department, Bangkok." Following this, more comments in Thai language. Signal was good. Referring to the callsign mentioned in the ID, more than once I've heard a station ID using a callsign and each time they just say the letters. It would be much easier for the older listeners like myself, if they pronounced the callsign using the Phonetic Alphabet. For example the above would be given as "Hotel Sierra Kilo 9". At 1130, the VOA starts broadcasting in Oriental language from Thailand. (C. Bolland, November 2, 2008)

Tunisia
12005 RTT Tunis, heard 17.01 on 25 Oct. I Arabic with a call-in show with female host then male giving some PSAs and IDs with guitar music backdrop. Very slick production. Many mentions of Tunis all with a very nice S4 signal.(A Muick, AFG)

Zambia
13650 CVC 1630-1700. English with usual soft rock gospel music with Top-40 style DJ mixed with station promos. Audio lost at 1637 and returned in three minuntes. At 1645 gave phone # as +277-8278-5300 followed by ID as: " No. 1 Africa - CVC. One Life, One Way, One Africa." Music until 1657 then abruptly off without mentioning new frequency. Should have switched freqs to 9420 at 1700, but a check showed no signal. (Barker-Broomall, PA)

Zimbabwe
(non). via United Kingdom, 11745 NF, SW Radio Africa,1715-1730, Oct 31, “Newsreel” program with talk about human rights violations in Zimbabwe. Talk about cholera outbreak. IDs. New Frequency. ex-12035. Very good. (B. Alexander, PA)

27 October - 02 November 2008

Solar activity was very low through the period. New-cycle polarity Region 1007 (N35, L = 250, class/area Bxi/060 on 02 November) produced isolated B-class flares on 02 November.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit increased to high levels during 30 October - 02 November.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels during 27 - 28 October. Activity increased to active levels during 29 - 30 October. Activity decreased to quiet to unsettled levels on 31 October.
Activity decreased to quiet levels during the remainder of the period. ACE solar wind measurements indicated a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) commenced on 28 October. Solar wind velocities increased from a low of 287 km/sec at 28/0056 UTC to a
high of 741 km/sec at 29/1648 UTC. Velocities began to gradually decrease on 31 October as the HSS subsided. Interplanetary magnetic field changes associated with the onset of the CH HSS included increased Bt (peak 14 nT at 28/1841 UTC) and intermittent periods of
southward Bz (minimum -10 nT at 29/0447 UTC).

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
05 November - 01 December 2008
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels. However, there will be a chance for low activity (isolated low-level C-class flares) during 20 November - 01 December with the return of (old) Region 1007 to the visible disk.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 05 - 15 November and 26 November - 01 December.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels on 05 November. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels on 06 November. A further increase to active to major storm levels is expected during 07 - 08 November due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). Activity is expected to decrease to unsettled levels on 09 November as the HSS subsides. Quiet conditions are expected during 10 - 24 November. Field activity is expected to increase to unsettled to active levels during 25 - 27 November due to a recurrent CH HSS. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 28 November - 01 December as the HSS
subsides.

A look back at crystal radios
GORDON REEVE, Northampton
As I remember it. My first experience of a crystal set was when my pals and I were on our way to school one morning when behold we found a nice foot square box placed on a dustbin ready for the weeks refuse collection. Not knowing what it was we decided to take it and explore. I was then ten years old which make it 1941. There were knobs set into the lid and the lid was hinged. On opening we found a large coil and wires, also a glass file which contained a small knob and shaft which touched a stone, this was the crystal I remember, Coming out of school and showing it to my granddad who said what it could do, he gave us a pair of large headphones so we went down to the local field connected one long wire to a tree and the earth wire we stuck in the ground. Then we fiddled and after awhile we heard faint music. It worked! What ever happened to it I can't remember, perhaps it was swapped for something else, alas. Now it would self for £££'s (GR 1919) (Source: Contact-Radio Topics/Nov 2008 via Alan Roe)

Greenland weekend log on 3815

Greenland: 3815USB Ammasalik Radio 2010 with kids singing and accordian music at 2020. They played music right through 2030. I am starting to wonder if this is weekends only now. The initial log was during the week, but all the subsequent logs are from the weekends [see below.] I keep trying during the week without success, but they always seems to
have a nice signal on the weekend. Has anyone heard them during the week recently? Does anyone have contacts at the stationthat can provide us with their current schedule? (Hans Johnson Nov 1/Cumbre DX)

Query on voice recording software
Dear DX-friends,
I have AR7030 Plus receiver and Dell Inspiron 1720 portable computer with Vista Home Premium software. I was quite active in DX-ing until my retirement in 2000. Afterwards I was busy on other matters and I did not do any DX-ing for some years. Now I plan to start again and would like to use my computer for recording. My old casette recorder decided not to work any more after 34 years. Mauno Ritola helped me to connect my receiver to my computer. He has been using RecAll Pro program and I decided to try it.

I installed RecAll Pro some days ago for trying it before bying. After the installation it worked beautifully until next day, when I tried to use it. When starting it, my computer was completely blocked. I had to reboot my computer, uninstall RecAll Pro, reinstall it and it worked again until I restarted my computer. I like the program, but it is too painful to uninstall and reinstall the program every time I want to use it. I know that there are a lot of other similar kind of programs available in the market doing the same thing. However, I would like to have opinions of the users of those software programs before committing myself
Please reply directly to me that we do not waste space and time of the other
Hard-Core-DX users.
Best regards to everyone.

Recent QSL from VOA
I stopped collecting QSL's back sometime in the 70's but decided to start again recently because there are so many new countries to verify and because I have so much more time on my hands after retiring from Voice of America.
The first new QSL received came from, of all places, VOA, verifying the Sao Tome relay station. While it confirmed the site, the rest of the data was wrong. Frequency was wrong, date was incorrect, time was wrong. I'm not certain if I should return it--along with the original letter -- asking for a correct card or keep it as is. Someone somewhere probably has my correct version, and I have theirs. And they're wondering, too.(Bruce Barker-PA, NRD-535D, Alpha Delta DX Sloper)

Sudan Radio Peace confirms they're on the air
I had a query as to whether 5895 is actually on the air, the station just confirmed for me that it is indeed on. original message:
Hi All - I got a message from these guys that they are back on the air. They used to make it to ECNA and Europe at 0300 on 4750. (Johnson Oct 29)
Radio Peace was briefly back on the air, but is now off again. They are working to get back on 4750 and 5895 (Johnson Oct 8)
On a really good day for E-W African propagation, can be heard on WCNA...but
would be marginal at best 0245 to 0315. (Bruce Churchill/Cumbre DX)

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
20 - 26 October 2008

Solar activity was very low. No flares were observed. The visible disk was spotless. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels during 20 - 21 October. Activity increased to unsettled levels on 22 October. Activity returned to quiet levels during 23 - 26 October. ACE solar wind measurements indicated minor variations during the period. Velocities ranged from approximately 290 - 450 km/sec. IMF Bt ranged from 01 - 10 nT. IMF Bz ranged from +09 to -07 nT. The increase to unsettled levels observed on 22 October was associated with increased velocities coupled with intermittent periods of southward IMF Bz.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
29 October - 24 November 2008

Solar activity is expected to be very low. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 30 October - 06 November and 08 - 15 November.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels during 29 - 31 October with a chance for minor storm conditions on 30 October due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Activity is expected to decrease to mostly quiet levels during 01 - 06 November as the high-speed stream subsides. Activity is expected to increase to minor storm levels with a chance for major storm conditions on 07 November due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream. Activity is expected to decrease to unsettled to active levels during 08 - 09 November as the high-speed stream subsides. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels
during 10 - 23 November. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels on 24 November.
