Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedules
Hello friends,
Here in North America, now that the transition to Daylight Savings (summer) Time is complete, there are some additional changes to the Shortwave Radiogram schedule. The schedule for WINB on 9265 kHz stays with Eastern local time, so Shortwave Radiogram on 9265 is now one hour earlier by UTC. But WINB on 13690 kHz DRM stays with UTC year-round, so local time will be an hour later by UTC. I suspect the 13690 frequency will change with the new shortwave broadcast frequency starting March 29; I will let you know.
As for WRMI, its schedule on frequencies used for Shortwave Radiogram stays with UTC throughout the year, so Shortwave Radiogram via WRMI will be one hour later by local time where Daylight Savings Time is observed. There will be no frequency changes at the end of March, but one of the 15770 kHz shows (I don't know which one yet) will be dropped because of a new WRMI client.
Spring (or fall depending on your Hemisphere) brings new shortwave propagation opportunities. For example, Last weekend I heard the Saturday 0330-0400 UTC broadcast on 9265 kHz from WINB Pennsylvania via an SDR in New Zealand. This weekend, the time for that transmission changes to 0230-0300 UTC, but the reception conditions should remain interesting. See also (links below) videos of amazing reception at 0800 UTC.
I often cannot stay awake for the Saturday 0230-0300 UTC transmission. For this reason, I've asked Mitch Plehn @Plano26 to moderate the @SWRadiogram Twitter account during this broadcast. Mitch lives in Arizona, where it is at the more civilized local (MDT) time of 8:30 pm. As moderator, Mitch will post a "warning" tweet at 0200 UTC, and retweet any interesting results during the broadcast. Throughout the weekend, tweet your results to @SWRadiogram. Follow @SWRadiogram to see other listeners' results. If you don't do Twitter, visit https://twitter.com/swradiogram and scroll down.
Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 142) are provided by Lolo sdr in Spain and Scott in Ontario (both Friday 1300 UTC), 2010DFS in Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 7730 plus image at 0823), kurama10goo in Japan (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz excerpt), Mark in Scotland (Sunday 0800 UTC on 7730 kHz), and Ralf in Germany (Sunday 2330-2400 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.
This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, with eight MFSK images.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 143, 12-15 March 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:
1:45 MFSK32: Program preview
2:49 Cargo mission brings interoperable radio system to ISS*
9:22 MFSK64: Supercapacitors could safely power devices*
17:29 This week's images*

“This is a Music Show” is the newest addition to digital modes via analog shortwave. Most of the show is a music show, but the host transmits some MFSK text and image near the end of the broadcast. It’s transmitted on WRMI, Thursdays at 0200-0300 UTC on 5850 kHz (Wednesday evening in the Americas) and a new time also on WRMI, Wednesdays at 2100-2200 UTC on 7780 kHz (aimed towards Europe) . New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.
Thanks for your reception reports!
