Radio Serbia to discuss international radio on March 7

On 8 March International Radio Serbia marks its 75th anniversary. The importance of shortwaves will be a topic of the round-table discussion entitled “The future of world radio services and attitude of the state towards them”, to be held on 7 March in the Serbian Parliament.

Speaking at the round-table discussion will be national and foreign renowned experts, representatives of state institutions and radio broadcasting organizations. Among the participants are the President of the Voice of Russia, representatives of Radio Bulgaria, Voice of Croatia, ItalRadio etc. It is an opportunity to exchange the experience in the functioning of shortwave broadcasters, primarily those from the region, says the editor-in-chief of International Radio Serbia, Milorad Vujovic.

The idea is to have the participants present their experience in the functioning of these services that are aimed at the foreign listeners and diaspora. “For us, it is especially important in the situation when our status and legal framework should be resolved, and the position of the founder, i.e. the state, towards the functioning of the shortwaves regulated”, he notes.

Serbia signs new broadcasting contract

The Serbian Ministry of Culture and Radio Yugoslavia/International Radio Serbia have concluded the contract on the basis of which the station will continue to broadcast programs via satellite and the Internet and in 11 foreign languages in addition to Serbian.
The contract on the co-financing that will be valid by the end of this year was signed by representatives of the Ministry and the radio station. Representatives of International Radio Serbia said that during the next week talks will be held on the social programme for a certain number of radio employees.

Andy Sennitt comments: The only distribution platforms mentioned are satellite and the Internet, so it would appear that the station intends to drop shortwave distribution for at least some of the languages, which explains the planned discussions on the ’social programme’, another term for redundancy.
