'Who Drank Hector Hernandez?' - by Dimitri Verhust

Our series of Dutch and Flemish short stories in English translations returns after a short break. We begin with a reprise of the first story broadcast almost two years ago.

The reason is to celebrate author Dimitri Verhulst who just won the highest Dutch literary honour - the Libris Prize - for his latest novel. A sardonic history of the world, the book was praised for its unparalleled use of language and ironic sense of humour.

Both qualities are abundant in his story "Who Drank Hector Hernandez?" It's about a Belgian man who wins a holiday in Cuba where he is faced with a most unusual request.

*** The State We're In - Midweek Edition ***

Jonathan talks with Nirmala Rajasingam, a Sri Lankan woman living in London. Nirmala joined the Tamil Tigers over 20 years ago to protect the rights of her Tamil community, but became disillusioned with the organisation and its brutal repression. She tells Jonathan about her life as a Tiger, the murder of her sister by Tamils, and her hopes for the future of Sri Lanka.

Dr Neva Bartholomew was doing the job she loved, working as a primary care physician, serving families she knew personally - until the red tape of US health insurance companies forced her out of the field.

Commentary: When Kannan Arunasalam learned his statue of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, was likely taken from a temple in the war-ravaged north of Sri Lanka, he vowed to return it. But now that the war is over conditions are still too fragile so the statue sits in his apartment, for now.

Jonathan Groubert and his team look at current events from an unexpected perspective

This week in TSWI, we ask what it means to be stateless. We talk to the lawyer for a prisoner in Guantánamo Bay.
And did you know that everyone has the legal right to a name? In some countries, like Somalia or Afghanistan, only a small percentage of births is registered. We look at why so many children officially don't exist, and what this means for their future.
Finally, bicycles: are they a two-wheel test of the human condition? Bicycling couriers tell how they often meet with danger and aggression on the road. That's this week, on The State We're In.

During the summer months we take a break from RadioBooks to present our annual Global Perspective series. Eight national and international broadcasters give their local perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is Escape.

Notable for its geographical isolation and clean environment New Zealand has long been a refuge for those wishing to escape the more populated parts of the planet and seeking a life that is less affected by the effects of global warming and the impact of global pollution. "Escape to New Zealand" is presented by Halina Ogonowska Coates of Radio New Zealand.

Radio Netherlands - Program Preview June 30-July 4

27 MONDAY 30 JUNE
Curious Orange [primary programme]
It's a radio show, it's a website, it's a lifestyle. It's Curious Orange -
30 minutes of Dutchness on Radio Netherlands Worldwide

This week on Curious Orange... it's the second part of our series on classical music, the Dutch way.
The host of our Live from the Concertgebouw series Hans Haffmans will, once again, tell us all about the classical music tradition here in Holland. This week we'll hear about contemporary classical music and the festival tradition here in the Netherlands.

That's this week on Curious Orange.

27 MONDAY 30 JUNE
Earthbeat (repeat programme)
Dheera Sujan looks at the footprint we're leaving on our planet

Earthbeat this week looks at why there's a desperate need for naval escorts to take food into Somalia. We hear of a technology that sucks up oil seepage from shipwrecks. We look at the deadly cost of malaria and discover why medicines for this disease that claims millions of lives every year have been so slow to come on the market, and we hear of the treatment of malaria in Myanmar.

27 TUESDAY 1 JULY
The State We're In, Midweek Report
Jonathan Groubert and his team look at current events from an unexpected perspective

This week in TSWI, reporter Jonah Engle tells host Jonathan Groubert about how African American victims of crime in Newark, New Jersey have so little faith in law enforcement and so great a fear of retribution, that they have simply stopped reporting crimes, even murders, to the police.

We look at the right to clean air. Scientists from the Dutch National Institute of Public Health and the Environment tell Jonathan exactly what clean air is and why, when and how it gets polluted. A denizen of Bankok tells us that she loves walks walking so much, she's willing to ignore the pollution, as well as the furrowed brows of the middle classes. And a Dutch SUV owner explains why he feels he has the right to pollute the air if he wants to.

Finally, there's peace in Northern Uganda after decades of war, but not all of the fighters, most of the children, have returned home, often for fear of retribution. But as Journalist Pieternel Gruppen tells Jonathan, radio is now being used to convince them to come out of the bush and home to their communties.

27 TUESDAY 1 JULY
Bridges with Africa [repeat programme]
Lively discussion and thought-provoking reports about and from the African continent.

In this week's program: there's one topic we cannot afford to let go: Zimbabwe. What has happened between the first round of elections in March and today? What's life like in the country? And is there a way out? Or are there no answers to Zimbabwe's depening crisis?
And in stark contrast, we have a celebration. 40 years of the Radio Netherlands Training Centre. To mark the occasion, we brought together three formidable journalists, from Uganda, Nigeria and Mozambique. They go head to head in our Big Round Table on media and development.

And to cap it all, we have new music from one of Mali's most talented singer/songwriters.

27 WEDNESDAY 2 JULY
Global Perspective (primary programme)

'Living with the Water Wolf' - by Vivien Jones

During the summer months we take a break from RadioBooks to present our annual Global Perspective series. Eight national and international broadcasters give their local perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is Escape.

Over two thousand years ago the Dutch began digging simple ditches to drain water from their boggy ground. With this small act they embarked on millennia of attempting to escape what the 17th century Dutch poet Vondel called "the water wolf." Dutch efforts to escape the threat posed by water on land which is mainly below sea level continue today. "Living with the Water Wolf" is presented by Michele Ernsting.

Radio Netherlands - Program Preview May 24-30

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programs coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 24 MAY
*** The State We're In ***
This week on the show that looks at how we treat each other we're focusing on the growing trend in corporate philanthropy - companies, or rich individuals, giving money to help others. And we're not talking bake sales - we're talking canapés, cocktails and celebrities. So we go to the Global Philanthropy Forum to meet some of the charities vying for the billions at stake. Plus we speak with the GPF's head Jane Wales, who tells us why giving has become de rigueur for, in particular, the IT jet set.

We look at the right to sex and talk to the Dutch organisation that arranges 'sex care givers' for the disabled and learn that the word 'gig' in Thai means 'friendship with benefits'.

And getting back to philanthropy, but on a smaller scale, we talk about Kiva.org, the site where you can loan as little as 25 US dollars to a perspective entrepreneur in the developing world. We meet an American lender and the Ugandan woman who took the money, started a clothing retail business and, in contrast to the system of charity and grants, is now paying the cash back so it can be loaned to someone else.

'Two women'

Host Dheera Sujan replays interviews with two of the most inspiring women she's met - they live in separate parts of the world, yet they have much in common. Both have given up their middle class lives of relative luxury to live in rural areas to help the children most in need. Every day, they look starvation and misery in the face and dedicate their lives to helping people combat them. Both have an endless capacity for love and despite daily proof of the contrary, both continue to believe that it is love that will in the end, conquer all.

Radio Netherlands - Program Preview May 17-23

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 17 MAY
*** The State We're In ***
This week we ask if the military government in Myanmar has the right to prevent the international community from delivering aid to victims of Cyclone Nargis? Or do the victims have a right to international aid? We ask an international law expert as well as aid workers on the Thai-Burma border who are taking great risks to bring supplies into the country.

Can or should some books be banned? A German writer tells us why he feels Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' should stay banned in Germany. It has been almost 20 years since writer Salman Rushdie was forced to go into hiding after the Iranian authorities threatened to have him assassinated for writing 'The Satanic Verses'. But what is it like to be a banned writer from Iran itself? We speak with a best-selling author who has been in prison four times.

We finish with two stories of the mafia: Misha Glenny, the author of 'McMafia', tells us about his investigation into the spread of transnational crime since the break-up of the Soviet bloc.

And we meet Silvana Fucito who first made national headlines in Italy when she decided to break the traditional wall of silence and take a public stand against the local mob. As a result, Silvana has become a figurehead for the fight against 'la cosa nostra' and was even named one of Time Magazine's European heroes of 2005.

Radio Netherlands - Program Preview May 10 - 16

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 10 MAY
*** The State We're In ***
In the next edition of The State We're In we'll look at the anniversary of the creation of the state of Israel by talking with two residents of Wahat al-Salam/Neve Shalom a small village where Israeli Jews and Arabs have chosen to live together.

This week's theme is girl power. Getting behind the pop cliché of girl power we take a look at three stories from around the world where women are doing their bit to make their lives better.

In India, one group of HIV positive women are coming out of the shadows and singing about their status in a band.

In certain African countries, like Uganda, it's a male environment and considered something that 'nice' girls just don't do. The group Right to Play are doing something about this. Jonathan Groubert spoke to Alice Kansime [kahn-SEE-may], one of their training officers, from a line in Kampala.

The phrase girl power suggests being tough, independent, aggressive, all the qualities you need to be a successful RollerDerby girl. Ashleigh Elson tells us her story.

And in the last part of the show we look at gang culture through the eyes of an American high-school student at a school dominated by 'crews' and an ex-gang member from El Salvador. What advice can they offer each other?

*** The State We're In - Midweek Edition ***

'Legacy' by Joseph Pearce

'Legacy' by Joseph Pearce is a hard-hitting short story about the importance of remembrance. It's set in the future and what's described as simply 'The Event' has already taken place. An old man, in his mid-eighties, has been forced to give up his job as a guide at a museum that commemorates a genocide, but despite his age, he doesn't want to leave. He sees himself as a witness to the past and an essential link. If he's gone then remembrance will become even less relevant in a world where everyone looks to the future and ignores the past.

Radio Netherlands Program Preview - April 19-25

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 19 April
*** The State We're In ***

The Olympic Torch's torturous route through the world has us asking if athletes have a right to compete. A former American swimmer who was locked out of the 1980 Olympics tells us he feels the American boycott was neither justified nor effective. And we ask our Radio Netherlands China section colleague how the Chinese are reacting to all the fuss.

Plus we ask if the victims of terrorist attacks should be treated differently from the victims of other crimes, or of natural disasters? If so, how? We speak with an Israeli terrorism victim researcher, a Canadian 9/11 widow, and Jo Berry, who befriended the IRA terrorist who murdered her father.

In our series on the rising price of food around the world, we go to Venezuela, the fifth-largest oil producer in the world, where milk is nowhere to be found. And in his second instalment on life in a war zone, conflict researcher and lawyer Kannan Arunasalam explains, from a tuk tuk, how people can not only get used to the fighting, they even learn to like it.

Two fascinating stories about fatherhood and what it means.

One story is about a man who changed his career and life after he rescued an abused ape and felt like a father protecting a child.

And we visit the home of Ad and Ron - a gay couple who over the last 25 years, have opened their home and their hearts to more than 100 severely abused children in Holland.
