Notre-Dame reopening to air on Radio France International

Reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris Event Programming on RFI, France 24 And MCD in French

After more than five years of complex construction following the fire that partially destroyed the Cathedral in 2019, the doors of Notre-Dame de Paris will reopen on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December, the dates of the reopening to the public and the first Sunday mass.

To bring this global event to life for its listeners, viewers and Internet users, France Médias Monde channels are covering the event in special programs in French and 21 other languages.

Journalists from RFI, France 24 and Monte Carlo Doualiya have followed the progress of the work over the past five years and have met with the major players in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame. The channels are offering series of documentaries, reports, as well as interviews and analyses to understand the scope, particularly internationally, of this historic and religious monument.

Radio France International on strike

RFI staff stage strike over controversial public media merger

Employees across France’s massive public broadcasting sector, including RFI, are striking for two days to protest a proposed public media merger put forward by Culture Minister Rachida Dati.

As well as cancellations to regular broadcasts, rallies were held Thursday near the National Assembly and the Ministry of Culture in Paris.

Dati has defended the "ambitious" and "long-awaited" reform – saying it would strengthen the public media industry, which is facing stiff competition from private companies.

The first step would be a transitional phase, with a common holding company for public broadcasting as of 1 January 2025. A merger would follow a year later.

Radio France confirms language service cuts

Radio France International (RFI) has confirmed that radio broadcasts in four languages - German, Polish, Laotian and Albanian - will end on 19 December. These services will continue to be available on Internet only until a definite date is fixed for their closure. Broadcasts in Turkish, which have been Internet-only for the past two years, will cease completely on 31 December. Programmes in Serbo-Croat, which were origionally earmarked for closure, will continue via the station Beta-RFI, which is 49% owned by RFI.

RFI says it intends to maintain its FM relay stations in Berlin, Vientiane and Albania, which will continue to carry programmes in French.

Radio France International strike suspended for summer

The strike at Radio France Internationale (RFI) was suspended on Friday at a mass meeting of journalists, technical and other staff. Unions leading the action say they will relaunch industrial action in September in their efforts to fight a management plan to axe 206 jobs. if a settlement is not reached before then.
At nine weeks the strike has been the longest in the history of broadcasting in France since the 1968 general strike. Not all unions supported the strike but those that did proposed to a mass meeting on Friday to suspend the action until September.
Representatives of the striking unions, along with management, met officials from the Ministry of Culture on Friday afternoon. They hailed this as “a kind of negotiation” of the sort they say they have been demanding for weeks.
The action has been selective. Key workers have taken action to disrupt broadcasts, with their earnings made up from collections by supporters of the strike who were still working. Strike leaders stressed that they have not accepted management’s plan to axe over 200 jobs and describe the suspension as a “summer truce”. They say that they do not want to “penalise” freelance journalists and workers on short-term contracts, who become more numerous in summer.
A management communiqué welcomed the move, calling the strike a “danger for the radio station”.
