What do you do if you hear your neighbours fighting and screaming? In India, the ‘Bel Bajao’ campaign asks people to simply ring the neighbour’s doorbell. Not just to interrupt the fighting, but also to show the neighbours that someone is listening and that people know what’s going on. It helps tackle domestic violence, the campaigners say. But does it really?

Also on the programme, an interview with Heera, an American-Indian hip hop and rap artist who came to India to help street kids find a better future, using breakdancing and rapping to achieve his goal.

Naming, shaming and jailing: undercover in Africa Anas Aremeyaw Anas is a man whose aim is to name, shame and jail people. He does his work wearing elaborate disguises, and uses tiny hidden cameras to expose all kinds of abuses.

At great personal risk, he has gone undercover as a psychiatric patient, a pastor, a student, a labourer, a pimp, a woman, and even a tribal king. As a result of his work, corrupt officials have been arrested and measures have been taken to protect vulnerable citizens.

And a report from The Hague where hundreds of Tamils from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and France gathered to demand arrest warrants for Sri Lanka's President Fonseka, his ministers and army generals, following the end of the Tamil war in 2009.

Is there a right to sell small arms? Mick Ranger, a British gun merchant says his work is perfectly legal and necessary. While Irish nun Sister Barbara Raftery says legality means nothing since she conducted a classroom experiment that had her students import and export lethal, legal weapons.

Is there a right to migrate? Reporter Shannon Young visits an illegal migrants centre in Mexico and meets people prepared to stop at nothing to reach the US. We report on how the global economic downtown is affecting the 200 million Chinese migrants who moved from the countryside to work in factories. And we meet Joyce, a Nigerian woman who came to Europe when she was promised a job as a waitress but ended up in one brothel after another.

Now that President Obama has lifted restrictions on travel to Cuba, we speak again with Marlene, who told us three months ago how much she missed her family. Now she can go home whenever she wants.

And did Allah make them funny? Azhar Usman and Preacher Moss are Americans, lecturers, community activists and, oh yeah, stand up comedians. Together they travel the world raising smiles and consciousness while confronting fear of Islam in the West with their own unique brand of inclusive comedy.

Fair Isle is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the British Isles. At times in the last century Fair Isle's population became so low that there was talk of evacuation. In 2005 the Fair Isle community of around 65 people advertised for a family to join them. After interest from all over the world, a hat-maker from upstate New York, his wife and their young son were the successful applicants.

Nick Rankin of the BBC World Service travelled across the water to talk to them and other incomers of different generations about creating a life on Fair island.

During the summer months we take a break from RadioBooks to present our annual Global Perspective series. Eight national and international broadcasters give their local perspective on a topic of global interest. This year the theme is Escape.

Hong Kong is well known as a community made from refugees, expatriates and people looking to escape their lives back home and build new ones. It may come as a surprise to learn that this densely populated place appeals not only to foreign humans but certain non-native animals as well.

In "Where the Buffalo Roam" Sarah Passmore from RTHK looks at how creatures from birds to bovines, reptiles to rhesus monkeys have become unlikely but permanent residents.

Who defends the defenders?

Amnesty International recently lamented that many of those targeted for human rights abuse around the are often the people trying to bring about change in their communities against the wishes of the ruling governments. So we meet the people of Peace Brigades International, volunteers who accompany activists under threat in the hope that their presence will discourages attacks. And we speak with Amnesty about the job of defending Human Rights defenders.

In this week's focus we look at the right to be Muslim and gay. Mazin, a gay Egyptian man, tells the story of how he was arrested and imprisoned in Cairo for "debauchery or offences against public morality and sensitivities". Despite his treatment, he remains a faithful Muslim. We compare his experience to that of Emrecan, who lives in Istanbul, a city known for its relative tolerance of homosexuality. And we meet Muhsin Hendricks, who is gay and an Imam, about how his sexuality affects his work.

"The Scorpion Wore Pink Shoes" by Janice Levy

The first runner-up in our Radio Books 2008 competition comes from author and writing teacher Janice Levy from Merrick, New York. Her stories have appeared in numerous literary journals. She has published children's books in both English and Spanish.

Her winning story "The Scorpion Wore Pink Shoes" is about an illegal immigrant from Costa Rica who works in a hotel in the United States. The jury was impressed with her rich use of language and the finely observed central character.
