Questions Circulate on the Future of WBCQ

The National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters posted on Facebook:

10 October 2026

WBCQ is a commercial shortwave radio station in Maine, USA. The station is selling its 500-kilowatt Continental transmitter, its 360-degree rotatable antenna, a 2-megawatt generator, 3000 square foot transmitter and studio building, and 100 acres of land near Monticello, Maine -- all for US$2 million. The price includes these assets, but if the buyer would like to operate the station in this location, he/she would have to obtain a new license from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Or the buyer could take the equipment and move it to another location. WBCQ will continue to operate an adjacent lower-power shortwave facility under its license, and that portion of the station is not for sale.

WBCQ: A One-of-a-Kind Shortwave Radio Station

A brokered programming business model has kept the station on the air for 26 years

BY JAMES CARELESS
PUBLISHED: JULY 24, 2024

There are all kinds of shortwave radio stations in the world, but WBCQ seems unique.

Allan Weiner at the foot of the rotatable antenna installed in 2018.
Located in Monticello, Maine, WBCQ is an up-to-500,000 watt shortwave powerhouse that covers the world via 7.490 MHz, 9.330 MHz, 5.130 MHz, 3.265 MHz, and 6.160 MHz — depending on the time of day, to maximize signal propagation by bouncing off the ionosphere.

The same rural broadcasting center and antenna/transmitter site is also home to local stations WXME(AM) — carrying talk and rock music on 780 kHz with a translator on 98.3 MHz — and WBCQ(FM), airing classic country on 94.7.

“WBCQ is probably the only shortwave, AM and FM combination radio station in the United States,” said Allan Weiner, a lifelong radio broadcaster/engineer who has owned and operated it with his wife Angela since 1998. “It’s a ma-and-pa station. I’m Pa, and Ma is sitting next to me right now.”

WBCQ Relies on High-Power Shortwave Antenna

The rotatable structure in Maine carries religious programming on 9.330 MHz

BY PAUL MCLANE
PUBLISHED: JANUARY 8, 2024

One of the more unusual facilities featured in our recent Radio World ebook about interesting RF plants is at WBCQ. It uses what is believed to be the only rotatable shortwave antenna in North America.

The station operates from Monticello in northern Maine; it’s owned and operated by Allan and Angela Weiner, who also are licensees of WXME(AM) 780 kHz and WBCQ(FM) 94.7 MHz at the site.

Installed in 2018, the AHR 4/4/0.5 antenna was manufactured by the former Ampegon AG and can transmit signals up to 500 kW. It is used to broadcast “World’s Last Chance,” a ministry that believes “the return of Yahushua is only a few years away” according to Bible prophecy.

Special thanks to Bill Tilford and The SWLing Post blog, for the following information.

That’s not a typo, in addition to its flagship frequency 7490 kHz, WBCQ will be running staggered propagation tests of 4790 kHz during February for a new entertainment program block sponsored by Angela and Allan Weiner and curated by Uncle Bill Tilford.

When the regular schedule begins in March, it will be two hours per night of music and other entertainment from around the world. Several new programs under development will participate. The February tests will use archival episodes of From the Isle of Music, Uncle Bill’s Melting Pot, Marion’s Attic, Behavior Night, Rock Wave, Tom Call Theater, and Jetzt Geht’s Los!, a wonderful program from Germany of Weimar-era jazz. In March these programs will be joined by several new ones from around the world.

The first week’s tests will run from February 1-5 from 6-8pm EST (2300-0100 UTC).  Each following week will run an hour later to determine optimum transmission times.  An e-QSL will be available for reception reports sent to 4790info@gmail.com.
