QSL Report: December 2014

Countdown of the Season
The Christmas countdown is upon us. Amid the last-minute mad dash of shopping and decorating your abode, take some time to enjoy seasonal programming from shortwave radio.
Choral music, dramas, religious services, and old time radio shows dominate the bands during this season. This is also a time of nostalgia for me.
Favorite stations have said goodbye to shortwave, while others, despite the odds, are going strong. Shortwave has not breathed his last breath. Far from it. There is still much to hear and enjoy.

The holidays also present an added bonus for QSLing. While you listen to your favorite programs, consider preserving them with a reception report to the station. This is an excellent opportunity to remember your favorite stations during this most blessed of seasons.

Thank you ...
Special thanks this month to Artur Fernández Llorella for his extensive contribution of European free radio email contacts, and copies of his colorful QSL cards. Do you have QSL information or scanned QSL cards you'd like to share with our world blog readers ? Contributions are always welcomed at w4gvh at frontier .com

Several QSL cards are available for Adventist World Radio Wavescan program. Send your AWR and KSDA reception reports for Wavescan to: Box 29235, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229 USA or send your program details to; wavescan@AWR.org

Weekend VOA Radiogram schedule

Hello friends,

The International Broadcasting Bureau transmitting station in North Carolina is evaluating a new Orban 9300 Digital Optimod-AM audio processor on its transmitter GB-5.

The engineers in North Carolina "would be very interested in any listener comments regarding fidelity and the ability to overcome less than ideal propagation while using the new audio processor."

Here is the schedule:

UTC           kHz      Content
0400-0700     7405     Radio Martí
1230-1300     9610     Vatican Radio
1400-2000    13820     Radio Martí

These are normal voice broadcasts, with some music, not digital text modes! You may notice co-channel noise from Cuba on the Radio Martí frequencies.

Send reception reports to our usual address, radiogram@voanews.com, and I will forward them to North Carolina.

VOA Radiogram this weekend includes news about a new report on world Internet freedom.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 88, 6-7 November 2014, all in MFSK32 except where indicated:

 1:38  Program preview

 6:51  Internet freedom report*
14:45  Mineral, mostly inaccessible, is named*
18:57  Exhibition of Navajo jewelry*
26:43  Closing announcements*
28:29  Bonus mode: QPSK31

*with image

Please send reception reports to radiogram@voanews.com.

VOA Radiogram transmission schedule
(all days and times UTC):
Sat 0930-1000 5910 kHz
Sat 1600-1630 17860 kHz
Sun 0230-0300 5745 kHz

All via the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in North Carolina.

The Mighty KBC will not transmit the usual minute of MFSK64 this weekend. The MFSK64 will return next weekend.

Thank you for your reception reports from last weekend, especially from those of you writing in for the first time. I will prepare either a QSL or an image gallery and try to answer all of the reports before the end of this weekend.

Please tune in and write in.

AWR Europe QSL (Gayle Van Horn Collection)
Austria
17605 AWR Europe via Moosbrunn, 1440. Good signal with local Horn of Africa string and percussion music and vocals 1440-1445. Male announcer in presumed Afar service at 1445. Musical interlude to possible station interval signal (?). Lady announcer's chat 1446-1447. Lenghty religious text 1447-53. Interval signal again with string/percussion music vocals 1454-1458. Instrumental music interval signal (?) 1458-59.Abruptly off the air at 1459. (David Ross, Ontario, Canada/MARE 810) Website: www.awr.org

Australia
4835, NT VL8A Alice Springs. Signal showing up at 2010. Announcer briefly at 2018 at recheck. Sounded like English at 2022. Lady announcer at 2024, followed by promos as usual at just before 2030, then unmistakable ABC news fanfare, and news script. If not for the CODAR, it would have been much much easier. (Dave Valko, PA/Cumbre DX) Website: www.abc.net.au/radio/

Bolivia
5952.43, Radio Pio Doce. Morning music at 1013 from DJ host with mentions of Potosi. Remote reporter's soundbites. Ad break at 1015 beginning with quick station ID. Phone ringing and whistle SFX during ads. Mentions of Potosi. Back to news at 1019 and almost immediately into sound bits. Best heard in quite a while. Fairly good signal at start but fading by 1020. Interference noted from China's CRI on 5995  (Valko)

Brazil
4965, Radio Alvorada. Just missed getting an ID recorded at 0903 tune-in. A lot of talk (Portuguese) by male DJ with an occasional song. Rooster crowing SFX. Many "Bom Dias." Long ad/promo block at 0929-0935 with full ID and frequencies from male announcer at 0934:50 at the end. Rooster SFX again with studio DJ, then into a song. Not bad, and modulation seemed a little higher today. Website: www.radioalvorada.am.br/  Two additional Brazilian's - 5939.76 Voz Missionaria with nice brief station ID at 2349:20. Very disturbed conditions making it weaker than usual and sounding watery and choppy. Radio Verdes Florestas on 4865.015 in Portuguese with soft vocal music tune at 1035 tune-in. Full station ID at 1036 with frequencies from announcer over music, then into what sounded like a morning religious program. Just good enough to copy (Valko)

Bulgaria
9465, Global 24 Radio via Kostinbrod transmitter. The Rock Pile Oldies show including songs like Roxanne, Magic Carpet Ride and Buffalo Springfield’s For What It's Worth song (lyrics-"everybody look what's going down"...) English announcements. SINPO 3+44+3+3+  0150-0230 (Zichi MI/MARE)

China
9520 Nei Menggu PBS, Hohhot. Have been trying for this one for several mornings, and after hearing Myanmar, checked this frequency..and whoa..a really nice signal coming in with long talks and language lesson of some sort, with musical breaks. Despite the very strong presence of China's CRI on 9525, best in LSB with 2.4 filter helped to bring a nice recording. I checked their parallel but a unstable signal and could not confirm if in parallel. Again nice s2-s4 and faded out by 1551. Very unusual propagation conditions to say the least. (Edward Kusalik, Alberta, Canada) Website: www.nmrb.cn

Clandestine
15557, Voice of Tibet (via Tajikistan) Sign-on at 1230 with usual routine after 15548 finished. Frequency 15548 was interfered by China's  CNR1 jammer on 15550. This frequency had a little interference from 15555 VOA until the signal went off shortly after 15557 started, then it was clear and very nice. One of the strongest if not the strongest I've ever heard V.O. Tibet. http://youtu.be/37_JTUDyPR8 (Valko) Website: www.vot.org/

17605, Radio Inyabutatu via Issoudun, France relay. Vernaculars broadcast to West Africa 1628-1759.* Program of commentaries and interviews with guest speakers, closing announcements and closing trumpet ballad with singers to sign-off. Very nice signal at s7 to s9. Some utility interference on lower side of 17605, best in USB Mode. (Kusalik)

Congo (Dem Republic)
5066.34, Radio Tele-Candip, 1743, about the strongest I have ever heard them with lengthy talk by French man and local references. In the clear.  6115 Congo Republic, Radio Congo, Brazzaville, 1745, fair with lengthy talk by French man, hi life, low audio. (David Sharp NSW Australia/playdx)

Egypt
15800, Radio Cairo to Africa. Arabic service muddled audio with presumed news from tune-in at 1445. Arabic vocal music - abruptly off at 1454. Did not sign-on at 1500 in Arabic as scheduled. No sign of Persian service on 15790. Presumed Uzbek service with Qu'ran  on 13770 to the Middle East at 1505 check. Announcer's text from 1507, followed by Arabic instrumental music. Additional talk and text SIO 323 (Gayle Van Horn W4GVH/NC)

France
15275 Deutsche Welle relay via Issoudun. French service to West Africa. Monitored *1700-1732. Sign-on in mid-programming with information and website, followed with newscast, with focus on African News (Nigeria, Mali, Central Africa Republic and Rwanda) Commentary on WTO and
security issues in Nigeria, noted to tune out with a really good signal at this time period.  (Kusalik) Website: www.dw.de

Voice of Greece QSL (Gayle Van Horn Collection)
Greece
9420, Greece, ERT/VO Greece. Spent the day (02 December) monitoring Greece while working on several radio projects. Monitored from 1200 (to 0000) on 9420, 9935 and 15630; with 9935 having constant audio hum throughout the day. Greek programming consisted of Greek music programs, newscast, conversations, interviews and time tips/to station ID routine on each hour. Frequency 9415 was not heard at 1700-1800, as reported earlier in DX newsletters; nor was 9450 heard from 1800-1900. During 1800-1900, there were only intermittent audio problems on 9420. At 1900-2200 15630 was dropped, broadcasting only on 9420 and 9935. At 2130, both frequencies went off the air. Only signal heard from 2200-0000 was the constant audio hum on 9935-but no discernable  programming observed on this or other frequencies. No programming was heard on earlier reported 11645 or 15650 kHz. Recheck 03 Dec. 1700-1900 only broadcasting on 9420 - no sign of 9935 (Gayle Van Horn W4GVH/NC)

India
9870, All India Radio/Vivdh Bharati. Lady announcer's Hindi programming presentation from 1530 tune-in. Announcements to Indian vocals on sitar and tambla.  Male joined program at 1552 (SIO 434) Tentative logging of AIR/Thiruvananthapuram, 1608-1615 on 5010 from NLD SDR.  Languages listed as Bengali/English/Hindi and Indian vernaculars. Announcer's conversations in presumed Hindi (SIO 222). Far too weak even for an SDR. Presumed AIR/National Channel on 9425, 1515-1530. AIR's External Service in English 1900 on 13695 (to Africa) with sign-on ID and national and Asian nations newscast to segment on past disasters in India. Information on national conference. Indigenous Indian vocals. Parallels 9445 or 17670 not heard. Brother Stair dominates 11580 (Van Horn) Website: http://allindiaradio.gov.in/

4880, AIR Lucknow. Carrier with tone from at least 1208-1213, then AIR internval signal to 1215 when lady came on with apparent opening announcement. Nice to hear Indians on 60 meters again. 5040, AIR Jeypore Quite audible at 1213 with subcontient music and announcer's item. One of many Indians heard this morning (Valko)

V.O.I.R.I. QSL (Gayle Van Horn Collection)
Iran
6135, V.O.I.R.I. Announcer's talk at 1843 tune-in with fanfare and a few musical bridges mixed with announcer's items and talk. Long remote report soundbite by male in French. Then realized this was Iran, not Yemen. As long as Iran is here at this time, Yemen will be impossible. Too much pulsing utility interference from just below signal (Valko)  Website: www.irib.ir  Arabic service heard on 13570 to Asia // 9870 (SIO 232) at 1535. Lady announcer's script segment.  Albanian service 1820-1900 on two frequencies targeted to Europe - 5925 and 9420. The later heard at 1945 with heavy interference. French service heard on 9850 at 1845 (Van Horn).

Liberia
4760, ELWA (Eternal Love Winning Africa). Close of pleasant religious choral music at 2100. Lady announcer followed with English inspirational religious talk, to mentions of "ELWA." Programming still on at 2106. Signal noted as strong quiet and clear (Valko) 3/Dec/2014 Website: www.elwaministries.org

Myanmar
5985.30, Myanmar Radio 1500-1533. One of the best mornings (29 Nov) to actual hear this station. Noted Burmese newscast at 1500, followed with program of indigenous Burmese music, interspersed by announcements from lady announcer. Noted to 1530 with clear ID in english as  "this is Myanmar radio..now the news".... and by 1533 the station faded out. Heard best on my Inverted V cut for 31/19 meter band (3/4 wavelength) but strong signal with local power line noise on the 40-meter long wire. (Kusalik)

Radio Oman (Gayle Van Horn Collection)
Sultanate of Oman
15140, Radio Sultanate of Oman 1835. Very weak signal almost covering two male's Arabic conversation. SIO 232.  Recheck 1910, signal hasn't improved...but intermittent Arabic vocals between talk segments. Station is scheduled to broadcast this frequency to 0000 (Van Horn). Website: http://part.gov.om/part/

Philippines
15190, Radio Pilipinas/PBS. Usual canned full ID by announcer in English about 1820 tune-in (unfortunately I wasn't recording). Ended the feature at 1839 w ith lady shouting "bye", followed by "Radio Pilipinas" station Identification, including another ID at 1839:55 with laser SFX. Additional ID in song introduction. Nice long canned ID again. Asian pop music ballad abruptly stopped for full English ID and jingle to signal off. (Valko) Website: www.pbs.gov.ph/

Tanzania/Zanzibar
11735, ZBC Radio. Dead air at 1822, 1841 and 1858 rechecks. So they must have been having problems. Finally found with Arabic pop music at 1950. Very good signal. (Valko) Audible from 1745 on 11735. Announcer's Swahili text to 1800. Lady's reference to station and clear identification, followed by her reading a brief news script to 1806. Focus on Asia: The Philippine Radio Story

General Douglas MacArthur Returns to the Philippines: The Radio Story

In May 1944, American personnel on service in Australia commandeered an American ship, the Apache, that was under modification in Sydney Harbor and it was fitted out with two transmitters and associated equipment, including two power generators.  An AWA shortwave communication transmitter in storage in Brisbane was modified for voice capability, and two American made International Harvester power generators, each at 50 kW, were taken from American army stores already in Australia and these items were all installed in the Apache.
Back at that time, the construction of a 10 kW medium wave transmitter was nearing completion at a radio factory near Melbourne in Victoria.  This transmitter was originally intended for installation by the PMG Department for use as an ABC medium wave station on 880 kHz at an unstated location.
It is possible that this 10 kW unit was originally intended for installation at 6GN at Geraldton in Western Australia on 880 kHz.  A few months later, a 2 kW transmitter was indeed inaugurated as 6GN in Geraldton, though on 820 kHz.
Traveling alone along the east coast of Australia, the Apache arrived on schedule at the edge of Humboldt Bay on the northern coast of New Guinea, on October 11, 1944.  However, at this stage, the Apache broke down and it had to be towed into the bay area at Hollandia, where repairs were quickly carried out.
For the first time, test broadcasts were made from the two transmitters.  Just before noon on
Friday October 13, 1944, power was applied successfully to the medium wave transmitter.  This unit was then powered down, and then power was successfully applied to the shortwave transmitter.  Next in this sequence, power was applied to both transmitters simultaneously, and then there was a loud pop, and the system closed down automatically.
Following the quick replacement of a blown large capacitor, the system was again activated, and voice contact was made on shortwave with San Francisco.  Radio silence was imposed at 3:00 pm that afternoon on all ships in the flotilla that were bound for the Philippines.  The Apache went silent now for a whole week.
Another innovative radio ship that joined the flotilla that was bound for the Philippines was the little ship that was identified as FP47.  This ship, just 125 feet long, was also built in the United States originally for freight and passenger traffic with Alaska.
The FP47 was also taken to Sydney in New South Wales Australia, where it was completely rebuilt and re-outfitted with radio equipment that included two American army Morse Code transmitters at 500 watts each and two power generators.  The FP47 also sailed alone from Sydney to Hollandia in readiness for the return invasion of the Philippines.
The Hollandia contingent of ships set sail at 4:00 pm on October 12 and they were joined by many additional ships from several American bases along the northern coast of New Guinea.  The total invasion force numbered more than 750 ships that made the week long journey of 1400 miles from New Guinea to the Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.
Included in this massive flotilla were several radio ships, most of which were fitted out with radio equipment in Sydney or Brisbane.  There were five major radio ships in the invasion fleet, in addition to a fleet of smaller and temporary radio communication ships.
The Apache was intended mainly for the transfer of press and radio information to the United States, as well as for the transmission of American radio programming to listeners in the Philippines.  The FP47 was used occasionally for the transmission of news and information back to the United States in Morse Code, though its main purpose was for the communication and the coordination of invasion information and tactics.
Three radio communication ships that were in use for tactical invasion information were identified as PCER848, PCER849 and PCER850.  These American ships had each been taken to Australia where AWA transmission equipment was installed before they were deployed up north.  We could also mention that there were as many as a dozen additional small radio ships, some American and some Australian, that were in temporary usage for invasion events and activities.
            The massive fleet arrived in Leyte Gulf, Philippines during the evening of October 20, 1944;
the Apache made a series of radio broadcasts on shortwave on October 21; and MacArthur announced to the world on October 22, his famous I have returned speech.
At the time of this broadcast, MacArthur was ashore at Red Beach, north of Palo on Samar Island.  An American army vehicle, a weapons carrier, had been fitted up as a mobile communication station, and MacArthur made his speech from this location.
This mobile broadcast was picked up on a navy vessel off shore, the light cruiser USS Nashville, which was the command ship under General Douglas MacArthur for the return invasion of the Philippines.  From the Nashville, MacArthurs famous words were flashed on shortwave to the Apache nearby, and thence across the Pacific to New Guinea, Australia, Hawaii and the United States.

A location map giving the radio circuits in use for this historic broadcast shows that the radio signals from the two ships, Nashville & Apache were received and retransmitted by MacArthurs radio stations at Hollandia in New Guinea and Brisbane in Australia, and thence by RCA and army radio in Honolulu, to RCA and AT&T San Francisco.  In addition, shortwave station KGEI at San Francisco in California relayed the MacArthur speech for shortwave listeners throughout the Pacific.

Two German stations to close

via georgsdorf.com

Deutschelandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur

1 December 2014

The German national public broadcasters Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur will disappear from longwave at the end of this year. Wasteful channels are going off the air due to cost considerations. The money saved will be invested in digital terrestrial radio (DAB+). At the end of 2015 the mediumwave transmitters of Deutschlandfunk will also close.

Deutschlandfunk currently still broadcasts through longwave 153 and 207 kHz and seven mediumwave frequencies including 1269 and 549 kHz. Deutschlandradio Kultur broadcasts by means of the longwave frequency 177 kHz. The mediumwave frequency 990 kHz went off last year.

Keeping these transmitters on the air costs Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur millions of euros a year in electricity costs. All these stations transmit with a fairly high power. The three longwave transmitters are each 500 kW, and the mediumwave transmitters range between 100 and 400 kW.

Meanwhile Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio Kultur can be received on FM and DAB+ in large parts of the country. Further expansion of this network is proceeding rapidly. Earlier this year Deutschlandradio Kultur switched from the obsolete MP2 DAB standard to the modern DAB+, which is also used in the Netherlands.

In 2010 it was agreed that the public broadcasters will only get funding for the rollout of DAB+ if they cut down on other distribution methods. It therefore simply means that the medium- and longwave transmitters must be switched off. Meanwhile, several regional broadcasters have already turned off their AM stations. For example, MDR did so in March 2013.

In the Netherlands, the NPO will scrap the broadcast of Radio 5 via medium wave in September 2015. Again listeners are advised to switch to DAB+.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 - 30 November 2014

Solar activity was at low levels through the period. Both Regions 2222 (S20, L=083, class/area Ekc/680 on 30 November) and 2219 (N04, L=160, class/area Dko/300 on 30 November) produced the majority of the C-class flare activity. The largest flares of the period were a C8/1f at 27/0047 UTC and a C7/Sf at 28/0040 UTC, both from Region 2222. Region 2219 emerged on the visible disk on 24 November and continued to show growth in area and magnetic complexity until the
latter half of 30 November. Region 2222 rotated onto the SE limb on 26 November and showed slight to moderate growth throughout the period. No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet to unsettled levels. Quiet conditions were observed on 25-26 November and again on 29 November. Isolated unsettled conditions were observed on 24 and 27-28
November. Solar wind parameters were at nominal levels through 27 November with solar wind speeds in decline from approximately 400 km/s to a low near 290 km/s. A solar sector boundary crossing from a positive (away) into a negative (towards) sector was observed at approximately 27/0241 UTC. Total field increased thereafter to a maximum of 13 nT after midday on 28 November while solar wind speed showed a steady increase from 29 November through the end of the period. Solar wind speeds ended the period slightly enhanced around 430 km/s. The geomagnetic field responded with unsettled levels to end the period on 30 November.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 December - 27 December 2014

Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a chance for M-class flaring (R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) and a slight chance for an X-class flare (R3-Strong or greater) for the forecast period as
Region 2222 rotates across the visible disk as well as the return of old Region 2209 (S13, L=251) on 08 December.

A slight chance for a greater than 10 MeV proton event above the S1 (Minor) threshold exists from 04-10 December due to potential significant flare activity from Region 2222 as it rotates into a
better connected location.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 02-04 and again on 13-22 December due to coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled levels with active periods possible on 01-02, 11-15, and again from 17-20 December due to recurrent CH HSS activity.
