Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 - 16 August 2020

Solar activity was at very low levels on 10-14 and 16 Aug. Low levels were observed on 15 Aug due to a C2 flare from Region 2770 (N23, L=24, class/area Cso/70 on 07 Aug.

Coronal dimming near S30E30 was observed in GOES-16 SUVI 195 imagery around 16/1700 UTC. An associated CME signature was observed in LASCO C2 imagery at 16/1812 UTC and in the STEREO-A COR2 coronagraph imagery beginning at 16/1824 UTC. Analysis of this event remains underway at the time of this writing. No other Earth-directed CME activity was detected during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 10-11 Aug due to coronal hole high speed stream influence. The maximum flux of the period was 2,950 pfu and observed at 10/1550 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 12-16 Aug.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels throughout the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 August - 12 September 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 01-07 Sep due to recurrent coronal hole high speed stream influence. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be unsettled to active on 30 Aug, unsettled on 19-20 Aug and 29, 31 Aug-all due to recurrent coronal hole high speed stream influence. Quiet levels are also expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Four Radio Stations Knocked Silent by Midwest Derecho Storm

Iowa's Derecho Weather Map (WTHR.com)

The Midwest derecho storm that swept across Iowa this week with winds that topped 100mph has left at least four radio stations off the air according to an update from the Federal Communications Commission.

It activated its Disaster Information Reporting System or DIRS to get a fix on how bad things were. The response shows that as of Today three FM and one AM were still off the air. The list included Alpha Media’s hot AC “Energy 106.7” KRTI and soft AC KGRN (1410) in Grinnell, IA; Kirkwood Community College’s jazz KCCK-FM Cedar Rapids (88.3), and the low-power KRQC-LP (107.9) in the Quad Cites market. No television stations were off the air, according to the FCC.

Meantime, iHeartMedia “News Radio 600” WMT Cedar Rapids also lost one of its three towers in the storm but it is now operating with low power. In a filing with the FCC it said the loss of the tower means did not impact is daytime nondirectional signal, but it won’t be able to use its regular nighttime signal pattern.

The station asked the FCC to allow it to run with the daytime pattern at a 25% power cut after dark until it is able to make the repairs. WMT is the go-to news source in central Iowa and iHeart understated that telling the FCC that “the interests of the public will be served” by allowing the station to stay on the air during its repairs.

Radio is especially important right now in the region. The FCC reported on Thursday that 12.4% of the cell phone towers in central Iowa are not operational.

Shortwave Radiogram weekend schedule

Hello friends,

Apologies for the late start last weekend of the Friday 1300-1300 UTC broadcast on 15770 kHz. When it finally came on the air about halfway in to the half-hour, reception was great here in the mid-Atlantic USA. The Saturday 1330-1400 UTC show, also on 15770, was transmitted in its entirety, but reception in North America was not good. It did reach Europe, however. Such is the daily variability of shortwave.

We had fun last week with the two exotic modes. The Hell 80 was visible most places.  It's not very practical, but it interesting to try occasionally. The 32xPSK63R (1760 wpm!) failed to achieve a 100% decode in most places, as expected. There, however, some successes. Most were one hop from the transmitter. Some were as far as California and Europe (see this example from France).  The 32xPSK63R mode might be useful for reliable, short-hop circuits in which a large amount of content -- such as a formatted web page -- needs to be sent without taking too much time.

Videos of last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram (program 164) are provided by Scott in Ontario (Saturday 1330 UTC), Brijesh E.P using an SDR in Texas (Sunday 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz), and Ralf in Germany (Sunday 2330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is prepared by Roger in Germany.

This weekend's show is in the usual MFSK32 and MFSK64. with ten images (1 x MFSK32 and 9 x MFSK64).

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 165, 13-16 August 2020, in MFSK modes as noted:

 1:42  MFSK32: Program preview
2:47  Excerpt of Belarusian report from RFE/RL* **
 7:12  MFSK64: Telegram circumvents Belarus's blocked internet
12:32  This week's images*
28:25  MFSK32: Closing announcements

* with image(s)
** use UTF-8 character set (default in Fldigi and TIVAR) for the Cyrillic text

New York and Pennsylvania NBEMS nets. Most weekends, as KD9XB, I check in to the New York NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging Software) net Saturday at 1200 UTC on 3584 kHz USB, and the Pennsylvania NBEMS net Sunday at 1200 UTC on 3583 kHz USB (with out-of-state check-ins now starting at 1130 UTC). Check-ins are usually in Thor 22, and messages are in MFSK32. Messages generally use the Flmsg add-on to Fldigi. If you are a radio amateur in eastern North America, feel free to check in. Outside the region, use an SDR in the eastern USA to tune in and decode. You do not need Flmsg to check in, and most of the messages can be read without Flmsg. If you can decode the net, send me an email to radiogram@verizon.net , or tweet to @SWRadiogram , and I will let them know you are tuned in. USEast NBEMS Net: Please also note the USEast NBEMS Net, Wednesdays 2300 UTC (7 pm EDT) on 3536 kHz USB.

Radio Menschen and Geschichten special broadcast August 16

Armenia

Radio Menschen and Geschichten is planning a one-off broadcast (presumed in German) on Sunday 16 August, via Armenia relay, form 1800 UTC (assumed for one hour) on 7500 kHz using 300kW transmitter in Armenia with a directional antenna to Germany.

Topics include:
Almost 40 years ago, the legendary Radio Andorra was shut down by the authorities. Since 1981, the impressive station building in Encamp, just outside the capital of the Principality has been empty. Restoration and cleaning work started 6 years ago. Andorra National Archives and Private Companies tried to save what was still there. But then a setback: asbestos. Among other things, we talk to Mireia Garcia from RETOC restauració, who was instrumental in the work. Full story on Sunday on radio. People and stories.

August 15., 2020 Radio Liechtenstein turns 25. This makes Liechtenstein one of the countries that got their own broadcasting station very late. The idea of setting up your own program in the small spot of earth between Switzerland and Austria goes back to the 1930 s. We dug in the archives and tell the story of broadcasting in Liechtenstein from the first ideas, a short broadcasting period 1938/1939 to very ambitious projects in the 1970 s, all of which were doomed to fail until the country in 1995 finally got his national station. Listening in the upcoming issue of radio. People and stories August 16., 2020.

The website is www.tumbril.co.uk where we show transmission times and frequencies, the playlist for the most recent programme, more information about Radio Tumbril, and the email link.

This week's programme  starts with some classical guitar, then part of a string quartet by contemporary composer Kenneth Fuchs. Next, three songs about a wandering miller by Schubert, a piano trio and two very different pieces featuring the harpsichord.
The programme concludes with a couple of tarantellas and part of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.
The usual mix of old and newer works for a variety of instruments - including the human voice. Another gentle show this one - I hope folks enjoy it.

Channel 292 can be pulled live off the internet if the reception is poor in your location. Easy to find their site with a google search.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 - 09 August 2020

Solar activity was at very low levels on 03-07 and 09 Aug. Low levels were reached on 08 Aug as Region 2770 (N23, L=023, class/area Cso/070 on 06 Aug) produced an isolated C1/Sn flare at 08/0349 UTC. This was the first C-class flare observed since 29 May. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate to high levels. Moderate levels were observed on 03-04 Aug. High levels were observed on 05-09 Aug due to coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) influence. The maximum flux of the period was
2,815 pfu observed at 05/1630 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The period began with the onset of a positive polarity CH HSS. Total field reached 10 nT at the beginning of the period and the solar wind speed reached a maximum of 754 km/s at 04/0516 UTC. By early on 05 Aug, solar wind speed was in decline and nominal background levels returned by 07 Aug. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 03-04 Aug and quiet conditions on 05-09 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity
10 August - 05 September 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low levels with a slight chance for isolated C-class flares through 15 Aug. Very low levels are expected for the rest of the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 10-11 Aug and again on 01-05 Sep due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be reach unsettled levels on 29-31 Aug with active levels likely on 30 Aug due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 July - 02 August 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Three spotted  regions populated the disk at various times during the summary period. Region 2767 (S21, L=200, class/area Hsx/120 on 26 Jul) was then maintained an H-type configuration through the period and was quiet and stable. Region 2768 (N26, L=111, class/area Hsx/020 on 30 Jul) formed on the disk on 28 Jul and decayed to plage by 02 Aug. It was quiet and stable. Region 2769 (N26, L=059, class/area Axx/010 on 02 Aug) quietly rotated onto the disk.

An eruptive prominence was observed off the SE limb about midday on 31 Jul. A slow-moving CME was subsequently observed, but was determined to not have an Earth-directed component. No other CMEs or activity of note was observed during the summary period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels through the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels through midday on 02 Aug when unsettled activity was observed due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Solar wind observations indicated the nominal conditions through about 02/0600 UTC when a CIR, in advance of a positive polalarity CH HSS, which became evident in the data. Wind speeds increased from about 310 km/s to near 530 km/s, total field was increased to 12 nT and the Bz component reached -10 nT. The geomagnetic field reacted with mostly unsettled conditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 August - 29 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels through 03 Aug with a chance for G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Quiet to unsettled levels and are expected on 04 Aug as HSS effects persist. Unsettled levels are expected once again on 29 Aug.The Quiet levels are expected to prevail for the remainder of the period, 05-28 August, 2020.

Radio Free Asia QSL card through August 2020

RADIO FREE ASIA RELEASES USAGM BIBLIS QSL

Only a few weeks left to receive the USAGM Biblis QSL card. Don't forget to add this one to your collection. Check Shortwave Central for information on the new RFA QSL card, scheduled to begin in September 2020.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces our sixth QSL card in the series highlighting USAGM transmitter sites used for RFA radio programming. Our programs also broadcasts from these USAGM sites: Kuwait, Lampertheim, Saipan and Tinian. USAGM Biblis is one function of the USAGM’s Germany Station and is an integral part of USAGM’s global satellite interconnect system (SIS) carrying RFA programming where needed. This is RFA’s 73rd QSL and confirms all valid RFA reception reports to the end of August 2020.

Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Tibetan (including Uke, Amdo, and Kham dialects), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in our editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of our target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of our broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest.  More information
about RFA, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is always available at www.rfa.org.

RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports.  Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions.  RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener.  RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at http://techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DXers, but also from our general listening audience.

Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl@rfa.org and by mail to:
